The pool was lovely, the rooms were clean. The resort itself was lovely and clean.
I chose the Shangri-La Hambanthota because it advertised to have a lot of leisure activities. I was really disappointed that most of the activities were an additional price to the rates that we paid to stay at the hotel. The rates for the hotel were higher than a lot of other places we stayed at in Sri Lanka and when booking I was happy to pay that as I thought all the activities were included. So I was very disappointed to find out that there were extra charges for the leisure activities. The hotel also lacked atmosphere. The pool was lovely but there wasn’t any music by the pool. We go to Bali quite often and the management at this hotel would learn a lot from the hotel hideous in Bali. There were about 4 pool attendants that didn’t have a lot to do. These attendants could be facilitating games by the pool and creating a fun atmosphere. There is a nice yoga deck outside, but no yoga. We needed up taking our phones and doing yoga online up there. Again quite disappointing. The tree top walk and rope swing were also extra on top of the room rates. The facilities were run down and there were no guests using them.
I would suggest to this hotel to liven up the activities, up date the facilities for the activities. Have things like cultural shows at night for the guests, kandian dancing lessons etc. The resort is such a nice place with so much potential, it’s such a shame that the leisure facilities bring it down.

We’ve stayed at other hotels recently for less money but the rooms service and food were all excellent. We felt that the Shangri-La was double the price but lacking in all of these areas!

Location is the only thing that made us come here
Check in was a disaster that we almost canceled our whole vacation with 3 children and after a 12 hour trip. Duty manager incompetent, unapologetic and simply rude. This was already conveyed to the property in emails, and not surprised that I received no response. Shameless service that is inconsistent with the brand.

location was superb and there were many activities for all
1) Service at the front desk was substandard for the amount of money paid. They were inexperienced and did not give any information on restaurant opening times, check out times, location of lifts etc
2) Some of the Restaurant staff were inefficient.
3) Room decor was basic for the price we paid
4) Mini fridge in both rooms were not working

excellent staff and they took very good care of us…the food is delicious and the pool was amazing. sameera and nadun took extra care in making our stay comfortable…overall we had a wonderful experience and we will come back to hambantota

Great for families with kids: kids club, kids pools and splash pads make kids day
Rooms are big.
Overall you can tell the staff is not trained across various departments - just based on your interactions with the front desk, concierge, bar, poolside service staff. (e.g., check in and check out collectively took 2 hours as the team cannot problem solve, at the poolside you need to chase the towelguy who is never around, same for the pool bar - there is noone to get your drinks order..unacceptable for a 5star hotel..and many other things)
Food is very average if not bad for a five star hotel.

The hotel is beautiful, food is great and service is fantastic. My kids also loved the trapeze.
It’s quite a long way from everything - so that day trips involve a lot of travel time. Also - while we were there it was not possible to go in the sea as too rough (early April).

the property is more a golf resort with a very beautiful outdoor area and pools which is good for relaxation for someone who doesn’t want to go out of the resort.
the food was terrible beside one of the restaurants which was just working for dinner time. some of the staffs were not welcoming and sometimes rude but the rest was very kind. the location is in some area that there is nothing around to do and you should just stay at resort. the price of the transportation and safari tours we asked from hotel was so high and unreasonable.
