Fantastic location close to the church and with great restaurants and shops nearby. Quiet in my room despite restaurant below and was able to sleep.
Room I was originally offered was not cleaned when I arrived, though I was offered a new one which was.
Stairs were extremely steep and hard to navigate with heavy bags, or for those with difficulties with stairs generally.
7.0
The room was cheap and cheerful, with clean towels, a tv and a washstand, a clean toilet and shower outside. There was no one to bother me as well.
No breakfast was provided but you can always grab something at the many, local eateries and supermarkets. The room was a bit spartan. It must be said, the stairs were very narrow and poky, so, take great care not to trip over. The hotel is clearly understaffed. It was a bit jarring that even for the checking out, there was no one at the reception to say you goodbye : I stood literally in front of a closed door.

Location was good and friendly staff
The room was not great. The single bed was underneath a low lying wall as it was under window. The window I couldn’t shut properly. There were stains on the wall. And the bed had marks on jt

Good location but be aware if you call a no local taxi early morning they cannot get outside the hotel as the square has barriers overnight and you'll need to walk to meet your taxi.
Non English speaking host made things difficult

I've been here before, so I know what to expect. Simple. Steep stairs etc. I come back because for me it's all okay regarding the price. I am always in one of the rooms in front of the house, top flour. I love the view of the big church!
The older I grow (now 76) the more the staircases become a problem. Still I hope to stay her for a few nights for many years to come.

Room too hot - rad on and 20 degrees outside

good location
arrived and room we were allocated wasn’t cleaned and we had to wait for another hour before we were given a new room which was the most difficult to get to and facilities were very basic… No shower curtain no door on shower
3.0
Positive Aspects: The bed was very comfortable. The location is very central Haarlem and for our stay very convenient. There is also a left luggage facility in the bar under the hotel.
Negative Aspects: The shower temperature was completely uncontrollable, you could either have scalding hot or freezing cold with no possibility of finding an intermediate temperature. The property next door had a very noisy dance event with an insistent musical beat which didn't finish till after 3 a.m., rendering sleep impossible. The stair is extremely steep and would be almost impossible with any suitcase larger than cabin baggage, the stair would also be very challenging to a heavier customer. We didn't work how how to operate TV until 30 minutes before checking out due to invisible control markings on the TV and mostly disconnected cables for power and signal.

Small but comfortable bedroom in the centre

It is a nice place right in front of the old church, with a cozy cafeteria and terrace, with a giant screen to watch football matches from anywhere, I loved the party atmosphere
I have no complaint

The only positive thing is the super central location - restaurants, bakery, supermarket etc is really close. WIFI also worked well.
I've been to many hostels in the past..good ones and not so good ones but i rarely saw an accomodation that was so uncharitable. Felt more like a prison cell. I would not even call it a hostel and least of all a hotel. Did not feel comfortable. At least the bed linen seemed to be clean. But somehow everything else in the room felt run-down and stinky. There's not even a bathroom - could you please mention that in your description?! - it's only a shower cabin on the corridor, where literally is no space to put your stuff, so I had to run across the corridor only with my towel and shower gel. The staircase is life threatening, don't even think of bringing a suitcase with you, as it is so tiny and narrow that i nearly lost my nerves bringing the suitcase up on the 3rd floor. Anyway totally overpriced for what you get - hurts to spend so much money on this bad quality.

It was cheap and right in the centre of town overlooking the cathedral.
There was a fietsenstalling around the corner for me to store my expensive bicycle for only €0.50.
The bin at the end of the bed had not been emptied, from the position of the duvet, I am not sure the sheets had been laundered. As usual the Dutch staircase was not easy to climb after a long day on my bike.
The reception (bar) was still closed at 0930 the next morning. I left my key card on the stairs.

It was fine for our needs, beds were comfy. Food downstairs in bar was very good & staff were excellent
Stairs way too steep! Shower room very poor

Nothing.
The hallways stinked of sigarette smoke, the shower was broken, the window was broken. A lot of noise from outside until 4 am. They tried to charge me city tax for an extra person. The whole building badly needs an upgrade.

Room 15 - 1st floor.
Extremely clean! I've been in rooms with wooden or laminate flooring before and they've always had a gritty feel if you're barefoot. Not so here. The toilet and tiling in the ensuite were dated but there wasn't any discolouration of the grout in the shower or the rest of the ensuite. It was spotless.
The beds (2 singles pushed together) were very nicely made.
It wasn't possible to check in early but the chap at reception (well, the end of the bar in the restaurant downstairs) was happy to hold luggage at the back of the restaurant. It was the same on leaving too.
The chap who dealt with the check in was friendly and very helpful. He filled water bottles on request from the bar (twice on arrival day and following morning too).
Plenty of hot water, even if it wasn't the most powerful of showers. 2 x complementary hair & body wash (travel sized).
Later check-out time than most at 11am.
Excellent location right in the Grote Markt, directly opposite the entrance to St Bavo's Church. Plus, there's a Jumbo supermarket only 2 minutes' walk away.
This hotel is not suitable for anyone with mobility or respiratory impairments. There are very steep stairs to the first floor and no lift. The steps are narrow in depth, and there's a gap in hand rail at top where the stairs change direction. Laundry bags are stacked at bottom of stairs in the morning, making going up or down more tricky still
The room could do with a refresh. There were splodges of emulsion on the wall-mounted tissue dispenser. The walls and paintwork look tired. There were burn marks or rust stains on the top of the toilet cistern.
The wall lights above the beds didn't work and were rather wobbly. The wall-mounted handwash dispenser was loose. Both issues were reported on departure.
The room wasn't cleaned during the 5-day stay but that wasn't a problem. Slightly more of an issue was the towels. 4 were provided which was great but all were hand towels, which hardly covered anything after a shower.
The biggest issues by far, though, were:
1) that there was no breakfast despite Booking.com saying it was included in the booking confirmation. The owner (via waiter) said that the hotel didn't have enough staff to be able to offer it and that's why price was so low, that Booking.com had been told and should have changed the information online (but hadn't).
2) that an explicit request was made for a quiet room at the point of booking. And it was quiet for the first 2 nights. But on the Friday and Saturday nights, sleep was impossible between midnight and 3.15am. It sounded like the room was in a nightclub. The music/song choices weren't bad (90s, early noughties mostly) but the volume was so loud that three of the walls of the room were vibrating. Presumably, the music was coming from the adjacent building and, so, was outside the control of Hotel Carillion but there was absolutely no warning. Ear plugs did nothing to reduce the sound level.

Basic room, just what we expected. Bathroom was fine, beds were comfy. The restaurant looked good although we didn't eat there.
There was a lot of partying going on in another room close by until late. Not the fault of the hotel I know but the rooms are really close together. Closing the window didn't help.

Location
Overall bad cleanliness. My staff complaint about heat, broken toilet, blood in their room, mold in the first room after complaining my staffmember got an other room. Overall experience very bad. My other staffmember repaired the toilet of his room. Bad price/quality! Will never book this hotel in the future after the feedback from my staff, they were in Haarlem to cover due to staff shortage in one of our stores. There was no other availability in this area for the dates. With check out there was no one at the reception. Eventually dropped the room keys off in the mailbox. Was sad to hear that they didn't have the best of experiences. Hopefully they will take the feedback to heart and makes some changes. Because they could make it work as the location is fantastic.

The location. And a reasonably good bed.
If you stay in this hotel, make sure to bring earplugs and an eye patch! I agree with most of the negative comments here. For such a rudimentary accommodation, I am only willing to pay a maximum of 25-30 euros (and then I wouldn't be too critical). I paid 55 euros for a single room, but I do understand that sometimes they ask up to 100 euros for it, that is really pure scam! I was here during a heat wave and the whole hotel from top to bottom was suffocating (probably not ventilated for a week!). Luckingly enough, I was able to sleep reasonably well because I had opened the window early enough and slept with it open all night. There was a (small) stain on the sheets - unimportant in itself, but it says everything about the mentality of the people in this place... Similar story: when I wanted to check in at 5.30 p.m., my room was not ready. After 10 minutes it was, but then the barman gave me the keys of the wrong room...

Breakfast was excellent. Could not ask for better. Good service. Location was ok
Going up.the stairs. They were very steep. The bed was uncomfortable too soft.
