We stayed in the cabins at the back of the motel. They were lovely and clean. The bed was massive and so comfortable. Would definitely recommend these cabins.

The car parks are very tight but apart from that very neat stay.

Location couldn't be better. Just a short walk to town centre and to local attractions. I could stroll up and down the waterfront, all along the town centre, and return to the hotel with ease, refreshed, every day. I loved the fish and chip shop over the road. The best experience I had was a calling onto the Mataatua Marae and guided tour. It's a must-see-must-do and was just a block away. I cannot recommend it highly enough. It's Whakatane's best experience imho and this hotel puts you right there for it. Whakaari White Island and the marina were easy to see almost as soon as I exited my room. The bed was the best bed I've slept in for years. The sheets were luxurious. I was grateful to be given a late check out when I requested one. Shaun/Sean was very pleasant and friendly.

The building looks a little tired. I can see that it would have been stunning in it's heyday. The floor length net curtains at the entrance to my room were mouldy from the floor up to about a foot. It was off putting every time I came and went from my room. I felt better when I could shut the drapes to put a barrier between me and the mould. I was in room 9. A quick check of the surrounding rooms on the second floor suggested that my room was probably the worst offender so I guess I was just unlucky. I was struggling with a sore knee for a few days around my arrival. I had a large suitcase. I asked if there was a lift to transport it up to the second level. I was told it wasn't that sort of hotel. We all laughed as that was clear and I appreciated the humour in the moment. I appreciated much less that neither of the two reception staff offered to help me carry it up the stairs. Health and safety rules I guess. C'est la vie.
