The bus arrived on time to fetch us from the station. When we arrived at the Annex it was like we had stepped into another world. It was so peaceful and quiet. Staff were friendly and efficient. Dinner and breakfast were exceptional. The room was comfortable and we loved having our own private hot tub.
Check-in and check-out times were quite restrictive. We had hoped to go on some of the walks and enjoy the surroundings but didn't have enough time because of the late check-in and early check-out and shuttle to the station. The check-in form said that there would be entertainment during dinner, however, this did not take place. It was other guests and not staff that told us that there was nothing else on because it was a weekday.

It was everything as pictured! The private outdoor bath was ready for us when we checked in and we went straight in as we checked in! The staff were lovely and while we had dinner they set up our tatami beds for us and when we had breakfast, the beds were all packed up when we got back! They provided beautiful yukatas for us to wear which were very handy for some picturesque shots. The shuttle buses were also very convenient for us to get to and from the station!
The bedroom itself had no windows (the toilet and bathroom did) so it was quite dark all day. The room we stayed at had a separate shower that faces the garden, which was amazing but when we checked in there were bugs and spiders inside the shower so that was a little annoying to deal with. The menus didn't have English translations so it would have been better if I could understand a little more about each of the intricate dishes served!

A wonderful escape up in the forest outside of Kyoto at this Ryokan. The staff took such good care of us, Ryokan and the surroundings was beautiful and we got to have the Kaiseki dinner by the river in the most stunning location. Icing on the cake was the private Onsen at the porch, all alone with only the forest outside.
Maybe it is how the tradition is, but we felt that the dinner was stressed through.

This was hands-down the most remarkable accommodation and dining experience of the entire trip. The room itself was small and modest, but well thought out and considered, and most of all warm and comfortable. The bath outside while there was still some snow around was an amazing experience. The meals that were served was the entire reason that I booked here, and it blew our minds - in ideal Japanese fashion, all the courses were meticulously crafted and presented, and were delicious. The location was remote, but has full wi-fi and mobile reception, and the walks in the mountains and to the nearby shrines were remarkable memories. I cannot talk about this experience highly enough.
Nothing. This is a must-do experience.

private onsen tub and the food were the only positives for me.
too expensive for what you get. feels as though the staff, although polite, not friendly, polite, want to get you in and out as quickly as possible. felt very rushed. property is old and dated, which I understand it’s more traditional just not my taste. room was dirty and stained. no attempt to communicate in English, which is understandable, but most reviews said that staff tried to explain atleast the meals in English which I would have appreciated an attempt. Horrible communication prior to arriving at the hotel, did not know about shuttle bus until two days prior, did not know where it would pick us up, took MANY attempts at messaging just to receive a general and unhelpful reply. would not stay again, waste of money for what was provided.

Excellent Ryokan experience, amazing and authentic dinner and breakfast, incredible staff. Private and public bath - beautiful premises, incredible fall colors.
It's pricy, but worth the money. Only one shuttle to go and come back - can use a Taxi to check in earlier, is worth it, especially to take a bath and explore the surrounding area (brief hike)

- The location was excellent, the scenery was breathe-taking. Such an isolated beautiful place in the mountain, giving off Miyazaki vibes.
- Best service I could have ever imagined, the staff were so nice and helpful. Huge thanks to each of them!
- Authentic Kaiseiki dinner and breakfast, so delicious and fresh. Plus we were dining on the Kawadoko, it was so amazing to experience.
- The Japanese-style tatami room was equipped with a private bathtub in a Japanese garden, so cozy to take a hot bath whenever you want. Couldn’t imagine how this could be possible in an urban area.
None, everything was beyond my expectation.

Amazing breakfast and dinner, wonderful view. You get a little private bath in your room. Just the walls of the rooms could of with a bit of repainting / refreshing. It was hard to get to the place though, we got lost but lucky there construction worker that gave us a lift in the middle of Takao. Japanese people are very friendly, helpful and so polite. The staff there were very nice. Their English isn’t the best but lucky I managed to converse with them in Japanese (I’m not very good at Japanese either as I only learnt it in high school 13-14 years ago 😂) so they were able to explain the dishes from dinner and additional information on the ryokan to me in Japanese. Therefore, if you can’t speak Japanese make sure you get a translator handy! Honestly I loved the view and the vibes at Takao, I feel the rich history behind this little town. Will definitely be back!!!
Walls in the room recommended to be repainted/ refreshed. Would look even cleaner if the walls of the bedroom were repainted. Maybe provide shuttle service from kyoto station directly to the ryokan so non locals won’t get lost (I’m sure guests wouldn’t mind paying for this either) But other than that, I loved everything else!

The location was beautiful, our stay was perfect. We were only there for one night but we felt completely relaxed and refreshed, the food was delicious and we felt really taken care of. Everything was clean and beautiful. Would definitely recommend and book again. The private outdoor tub soaked all of our troubles away~
N/A there was nothing we didn't like.

Very modern and clean
No directions in English on how to use the washer and the hot water heater. The first night was cold showers because we were to tired to spend the half hour it took to figure it out

Exotic ryokan in a beautiful location next to a river which has a an amazingly clear water. The views are really breathtaking, very serene and beautiful. Great hospitality from the staffs, very responsive (via email) and they helped us arrange a shuttle service to and from the properties.
