The uniqueness
The internet service was very bad

The staff is incredible! super clean and magical. The breakfast was delicious and very well portioned. This is a historical place and you can feel how well it’s taken care of. It’s conveniently located to the plaza and you can purchase private tours for the Edward James garden directly through them.

the history was amazing
there was a free breakfast and we got a tour to the garden of sir Edward James. they literally shoved us out to not give us breakfast. had to beg for a cup of coffee at 830am. Her husband was doing the tour that we paid a lot for. so if you go there demand your FREE BREAKFAST!! they had the fresh bread out and didn’t even offer knowing we were going on a tour THEY SOLD US! we are very respectful and didn’t appreciate that!! come on a freaking cup of coffee we begged for at 830 am🤣

The hotel was full of history and art, such a nice complement to our visit to the Edward James surrealist Gardens.
It would’ve been great to have Wi-Fi in the rooms, but it was clearly stated that there was only Wi-Fi in the common areas and since it’s an older unusual house it was totally understandable.

The property is beautiful, really gives you some insight on how the artist Edward James lived and designed. Breakfast was superb, tasty and diverse. The game room made down time so entertaining
Because of the age of the building, some amentities need retrofitting, like electrical outlets. However, that was so negligible.

Breakfast was outta sight — this place is actual pure magic in form. The people who work there are amazing and I will definitely be back.

Ok. Not exceptional.
No mirror in bathroom. Pretty bare bedroom.

Exceptional staff, yummy breakfast, secret passage to neighboring restaurant and tons, literally, of art and history in the building! Convenient to the main square and museums.

The house was beautiful and we were given a tour by the owner explaining its history.
The town was very raucous and noisy at night.
Possibly because it was the weekend but it felt like the music was in my room.

Interesting building with history and charm.
Breakfast was fine and the staff was kind.
Plenty of hot water!
In the same building as the hotel there is a "restaurant" called Plutarcos, where they have VERY noisy parties until 4am, not only on weekends but also on weekdays. Could not sleep any of the 3 nights I stayed in the hotel and had to go to Plutarcos in the middle of the night and ask them to turn down the volume of music and microphone ("singing", shouting, grunting...)
The room was cold and dump. I was ask not to use the Aircon, but they gave me a little gas oven, that only helped a bit. For sure it is hard to keep a place like this going, but it should not be on the cost of the visitors paying too much for what they get.

glorious place to stay and Louisa and team could not have been more helpful

An incredible unique hotel in the old house of Edward James. Beautiful, romantic, strange, beguiling. Real Leonora Carrington frescos, concrete moulds for Las Posas, and delicious breakfasts.

We are so happy we chose to stay at the former home of Edward James, his partner & his extended family. After spending the day at the Surrealist sculpture garden, it extended the transcendent experience of the garden & provided a whole lot more - the hotel is filled with the work of James & his many Surrealist friends who visited James. Do not let the outer rusted look of the midcentury, Gaudy like structures keep you away - this is an elegant & cosmopolitan boutique hotel that is beautifully furnished with extraordinary & whimsical Surrealist art work. The rooms were spacious, charming & comfortable, w/ lovely views of the Sierra Gorda mountains & a HUGE bathroom. Yes, it was a lot of stairs to get up to our room & we are not young - but it was worth every step. The complimentary breakfast was generous & very good, the staff attentive & welcoming. Added bonus: Xilitla has few choices for dining, but we highly recommend El Castillo's restaurant/bar - the food was good, the service excellent, & the decor fabulous - moldings from Jame's sculptures decorate the walls.
We had a hard time finding the entrance to the hotel & drove around it a few times before discovering where to park & enter - directive signs are needed.

Friendly staff, always willing to help; beautiful view from terrace; warm welcome; clean rooms; AC; pool; it has a restaurant (Plutarco’s) within the premisses with a delicious menu (nice dishes presentation); hotel is located right at Xilitla downtown, near to the main plaza, restaurants, bars, convenience stores and ATM.

Stunning architecture inside and outside, it was like being in a beautiful surrealist dream

The breakfast was actually pretty good and when you add that to the rather cozy and quaint ambiance of the dining area it made having it a really neat experience. You really feel you're a part of the history of the place most everywhere you go inside of the building. The location of La Posada El Castillo is also pretty ideal! True, it could be a bit of a challenge getting up the hill to the square for some people. But, once you do you are right on the main plaza directly in the heart of the little town of Xilitla.
I was in the Mariposa room and being from the southern part of the US having air conditioning was important for me. Unfortunately, the mini split unit in my room did not work and my best effort making it blow as a fan did nothing to cool the room, even when combined with the two ceiling fans in the rather high ceilings it didn't help. Ultimately, I ended up opening many of the smallish windows to get some relief. With that I gave up privacy and noise relief from the traffic. Worst part though was the lip service, "oh, I'm so sorry", response from the property manager when I expressed my frustration.

The history and ambiance of the building were really cool, and the kindness of the working staff added to the experience of the stay.
The A/C, which was a critical amenity when considering our choice to stay at this facility, did not work. Even worse, the hotel administrator seemed to only feign concern and offered nothing more than a disingenuous "sorry" when told of our frustration.

It was wonderful to stay in the family home of Plutarco with all the history with Edward James. It felt like a home rather than a hotel. The staff were helpful and booked tours for me. The views are incredible. I felt the spirit of Don Eduardo still visits here.

Excellent
Hard for small children and older people to navigate around the property

the posada is a living museam with actually artifacts from the garden and it is the house where Edward James stayed when he was in Xilitla. Luisa Plutarco’s granddaughter showed us around and explained
everything. includes and incredible breakfast.
the shower could have been stronger and the curtains let in a lot of light early.

The staff was friendly and responsive. They gave us a wonderful tour and helped us appreciate this historic home as well as telling us about the wonderful video about Edward James. Breakfast was delicious and satisfying with plenty of coffee. The hotel is close to the centro and restaurants and Carrington Museum and an easy 30 minute walk to Las Pozas. Beds were comfortable and there was plenty of hot water.
Our room was up a narrow staircase and because of the weather our room was cold even with the heater. (probably fine in warm weather) I would request a room on the main floor which I think would be warmer and quieter.
