Lovely hotel great staff but didn’t like the unexpected charge for parking on site another £10 a night makes it an expensive trip

This property has mice. We saw them and left. The entrance hall was dirty and stank. The attendant there was not in the least bit helpfull.

BE WARNED! I accidentally left my phone charger behind in my room, after calling the hotel daily for assistance I kept getting fobbed off that they will investigate. I was told nobody else has been in the room since so it must have been stolen by who ever serviced the room. I do not recommend this hotel, if you do decide to stay watch your belongings as it is clearly operated by bandits.

Bit of a walk from the centre of York but for the price it was very good

Jamie was most helpful, close to York racecourse and plenty of shops close by. Nice pub, The Volunteer 2 minutes round the corner. Only downside was the shower, nothing wrong with the shower itself but the floor was slippy and could do with a mat as I did slip over, luckily no damage but someone could have a nasty accident.

Service was nice. Shower room and shower were fresh and good. Bedroom was shabby; walls and paintwork peeling, carpet stained, mattress needs replacing. Window was very difficult to open and room at front of the house became very hot from sun. Not a quiet room with window open because of traffic. Dining room was clean, fresh and pleasant for a very nice breakfast with good choice of food.

We enjoyed our stay for one night. The room was clean but the bed and pillows were a bit lumpy! Bathroom was clean and adequate. Breakfast was very good and parking was easy at the back of the hotel. Would definitely visit again.

The first time I have stayed in York and this guest house is conveniently situated, not too far from the city centre. If I plan another visit to York, I will contact Holmwood House first, and consider other hotels only if necessary.

Great stay at holmewood house! Staff was very helpful and friendly. The room was very clean and extremely comfortable. Walking distance into York centre too. Would love to stay again!

It was our first stay at Holmwood. The staff were very friendly and helpful, especially Jamie who was on reception when we arrived. Our room was a twin bed and the bed was so comfortable I wanted to take it home with me. We were on the road side of the hotel but the traffic after eleven was hardly noticeable. It was only a short bus ride to the centre of York and there were several places to eat a evening meal very near the hotel. The breakfast was excellent and the chef and waitresses were again very friendly. I would definitely recommend Holmwood House , especially as the price per night was very good.

Room was very clean and staff was very helpful. The room is very dated and cold. Breakfast doesnt start until 8.15!

Heating in room wasn’t working. We mentioned it at reception and were told it would be nice and warm when we returned later. It wasn’t. It finally came on in the morning but even then it was barely luke warm. The mattress on the bed was hard and lumpy. No mention of the £10 parking charge upon booking either

Very cosy house (older hence less eco-friendly compared to newer buildings), with a lot of charm. Great location to head into the city centre. Very comfortable rooms, with a good shower provided. Friends other room was comfortable too according to them. Paid for breakfast on booking the room - served a delicious English breakfast, with very good cold options too. Good value meal too. Very friendly staff.

Bed basic breakfast in a cellar instead of frontroom would have been better for older people and people who have walking difficulties

Matress was very uncomfortable. Dried blood splatters in bathroom.

Two nights Reasonably easy walk to everything in the city ( we’re one disabled and the other recovering from a broken ankle, so really can’t be that long. Great room with comfortable bed. Lovely bathroom. Parking round the back does have a reasonable charge. What was best and will mean many return visits, was the amazing staff. Especially the two lads running breakfast. Great for a chat, fantastic food and couldn’t do enough for you. Thanks everyone

Staff very friendly & helpful. Had problem with no light outside room, pitch dark & awkward trying find keyhole, did mention it once checked in, but not rectified. Shower was mixer tap which was a nightmare not to burn or freeze yourself. Apart from that very comfy.

Everything was excellent. A little bit expensive though but apart from that nothing else to complain. Comfy, cosy, free parking, it's near the city centre, there is a bus stop in front of it or 15 mins walking. Definitely recommended.

We had a very comfortable stay. Pros - lovely room. Comfortable bed. Service at breakfast was quick and the staff were all very helpful and pleasant. Breakfast was excellent. There was a very comfortable lounge where my husband and I sat and had a bottle of wine we had brought in. The accommodation is very close to the city centre, easily walkable. Cons - the hotel is rated as 4 star but I would dispute this. Apart from when we checked in (bearing mind I had called just prior to arriving as we got a bit lost), there was never anyone on reception. There is no bar in the accommodation so I think that alone brings the rating down. We knew there was no bar when we booked so it wasn't an issue as such - I'm pointing it out before of the rating. There were wine stains on our bedding - the bedding was perfectly clean hence we didn't mention the stains - however this is not indicative of a 4 star hotel. Overall we had a very pleasant, comfortable stay.

Excellent stay, I was at the top of the townhouse, great views of York Minster and condition of the room was good. Service was excellent.

Lovely stay, staff very friendly and room had everything we need. Easy to check in and onsite parking behind the hotel easy enough to find. Close enough to the city to be a nice walk, we did it every day, the one tome the weather was bad it was only £8 in a black cab. Only niggle would be parking was £10 per night for a car park the hotel seemed to own which seemed expensive.
