I ended up not staying! On arrival (after a long journey, feeling wet and tired), I spent half an hour standing outside the front door, constantly ringing the phone number on the piece of paper stuck to the door! There was never any answer, and no answer machine, and I could hear the phone ringing inside the hotel, but could see no one. Eventually, a resident at the hotel kindly let me in the front door, and suggested I ring the emergency number, which was displayed on a wall inside. Again, there was no answer, and I left a message on the answer service. I also rang the contact number for the hotel given by hotels.com but again there was no answer, and I left a message. Just as I was about to leave, a cleaner turned up and kindly booked me in and took me to my room. The heating was not on so she said she would turn it on. By this point, I was late for a meeting, so had to leave quickly. I returned later in the evening to find the heating was not on, and knowing it would be impossible to find anyone to sort it out, as well as feeling very uncomfortable and unwelcome in the hotel, I decided to leave and stay elsewhere. If they are going to have a system where you are going to have a phone number on the door to come in, they need to make sure the number works. The cleaner knew that the phone wasn't diverting to the correct number, so why wasn't an alternative number given? Not impressed. Waste of money.

Please avoid unless you are absolutley desperate and then only use for 1 night.
There is no reception - you have to ring the owner on his number and he will have left key in door for you
There is parking over the road in a Clinic car park but its Council run so you need lots of change (reasonably priced) but you will be up at 8 every morning to pay for until you leave. At least passed 1800hrs is free until 08am.
Short of pillows, blankets and towels until met up with service lady next AM
No heating - she had to get filthy electric heater
Black mould
Stains of unknown origin everywhere - carpet, ceilings, walls, window blind even inside the picture hanging on the wall.
No breakfast or bar but wouldn't eat or drink here anyway - "bar" area smells mouldy
Stinks of skunk and cig. smoke breaking fire laws
Taps in B/room sink broken and loose
The OOHs mobile number given not answered and Owner doesnt answer phone. The maids are freindly but are not given list of whos who so will knock you up each morning to see if you are leaving before 1030.
No power to room and no hot water from 10am on last morning. Maid said its not cut off prior to check out so must've been a power cut. Could not shower. Ablutions in the dark on last morning.
The only 3 positives were TV working (back missing off remote tho') the Bed was comfy and the shower water was hot when working.

Overall I suppose you get what you pay for, check in ok involved phone call, room ok, next morning going to get showered, no towels, so tried hot tap on sink for wash no hot water, couldn't get TV to work but only minor problem wasn't sat in room long

A very basic and poorly maintained hotel.
Upon arrival 7pm(ish) I was greated with a locked front door and a note on it saying to call the main hotel phone number.
A man answered and directed my attention to a key pad on the wall, to type in a code for access and directed to my room.
My room was a fair size but very basic. The whole place needs a lot of TLC.
Taps were loose, other fixtures and fittings broken. Spot mould on walls and ceiling in bathroom. Signs of water damage on the walls around the window. There wasn't even a spoon with the tea and coffee set. Stiring my tea with my car key had to do.
I managed to trip both the sockets and lights breakers when attempting to turn on the towel rail. An hour wait for the breakers to turned back on wasn't great. Especially, when I was told someone would be there in around 15-20mins.
And to top things off, I got woken by drunken couple, in a neighbouring room, arguing and slamming doors at around 1:15am, which went on till gone 3am.
So, all I can say is stay well away

I didn't want to post a negative review but this is several times that I've been chased up.
For the price the place is fine but unfortunately the rooms aren't closed after cleaning. On entering the room the toilet was full and the flush wasn't working, not a great problem as a bucket nearby.
Otherwise no problems.

Room was clean and comfortable but a cold shower is unacceptable

Great stay and good prices, good amenities nearby as well.

Hotel was easy enough to find from the train station.
Upon arrival, reception un-manned and a phone number to call to gain access.
Restuarant, bar and other facilites not open and seemingly untouched for years, all seemed very un-secure.
Room was open with key on bed, not hoovered and hald eaten condiments. No tea or coffee facilites and masking tap round he floor in bathroom where decoration had taken place? Overall very grimey and dirty albeit bedding seemed clean enough.
Does anyone actually manage this property? No staff present at all and seemed like no care or attention given to this hotel for many many years.
Speaking with locals, their response when mentioning where we were staying was somewhat to be desired.
Honest review, do not book this hotel until it has been closed, refurbished and rightly cared about.

The hotel was good value for money .
I had visited this hotel about 10 years and I remember having bed and breakfast ,a full English breakfast in the restaurant.
However on my latest visit that all closed .
In fact when I got to the door a notice gave me a telephone number to ring so as to.gain entry .
It was however adaquate for my two day stay in the town.

The hotel was filthy, stain on the pillow case, stained bedside furniture and table. There was an old dirty fridge with a half bottle of water inside. We left straight away. Looking for a refund frim Hotels.com

Very basic hotel (which was expected considering the price) and the room was VERY tired looking with what looked like a repaired (but not painted) ceiling and the worst view of any hotel I've ever stayed in.
I do have an issue with the parking, It is listed as having parking, which I queried to be told that it was residential on street parking, which would be a problem if I checked in before 6pm or out after 8am, as outside of those times, the parking is permit only.

Only ever talked to the owner by phone, who sent me a text with a room number, to find someone else in that room. Rang up again and he sent a second text for a different room. No towels or cups in the room, rang up again, and we found them left outside our door on our return but only 1 large towel and 1small, and cardboard cups. No hot water at all, in sink or shower for the 2 days we were there. TV remote not working. Other people in other rooms had the same problems - see photo

Tiny room, small bed, no staff around, two of four light fittings broken, only extremely limited choice of TV (only two channels working), very hot room (no AC or fan), more like a hostel than a hotel - not a welcoming place...

I guess you get what you pay for! Could not login to connect to wifi. Spoke to someone on the phone and met no-one.

On arrival windows wide open. Freezing cold. This was to try and get rid of the smell of damp. Black mould on the walls. No cover on the light. Door handles snapped off. Unable to lock window. No hot water pressure. Lates of dust on bed head. Seat threadbare. No one on reception no staff available on phone. I left. Has to be the worst hotel I’ve ever been in.

The hotel was halfway through a much needed refurbishment, however this meant duvets filled corridors, wet paint on multiple walls and there were still electrical fittings hanging off the walls (including, rather disconcertingly the shower fan switch dangling over the bath). That said, the room was a good size and the staff were friendly.

I got there, knowone to greet us, they couldnt find our booking, so we had to find another hotel last minute, paying extra money we did not budget for. At 2am the hotel emailed, stated they could not facilate a room, and now after 6 days I am still trying to get our money back.

Room not clean, fire alarm went off at 5.30am, everyone standing outside for half an hour, tried calling both numbers for the hotel and out of hours, no one answered or called back, after an hour standing in the rain with obviously no staff on site we re entered the building potentially risking our lives and got our bags and left, we continued our sleep in the vans… I’m presuming they’re housing homeless as young kids were partying till around 3am in one of the rooms, very noisy - absolutely no good when you need to sleep and have work the next day

There was exposed wires and screws sticking out of the wall. Silver fish in the shower and toilet. We refused to use the sink in case there as well. The beds had sheets with stains and the bed was broken. Absolutely awful stay. Wouldn’t recommend

Oops. I lived in Hartlepool as kid and passed the Douglas everyday, nicknaming it the 'Doglas.' Had people stay there years ago who really liked it. Sadly, , my mother got mugged outside in 1999. Haven't heard of any similar incidents.
Working in the area last weekend, with near tragic closure of the lovely Grand Hotel I decided to give the Doglas a go for a two night stay.
NOT A GOOD START
Arrived, shattered at 8.45 were was no-one from the hotel to be seen, only a customer pacing the floor complaining about (someone else's) sock in their room. Normally you just get tea and coffee.
The Douglas employs a policy whereby you ring a number on arrival and receive a pass code to get into the building, along with your room number. The key is sitting on the bed. I bounded optimistically upstairs.
In the room was indeed something on the bed - the occupant who had been allocated the room earlier, Thankfully he was very nice about it.
I rang the main number.... no response. Emergency number, No response, Any advice from free sock recipient? No. Finally a ringback, and room 18.
Ah well. A hearty breakfast would set me up for a busy Saturday. Nope, no breakfast or explanation, either day.
The owner did apologise and I enjoyed the Sunday carvery (40 min wait). The room was acceptably clean and bed comfortable. Wasn't expecting Claridges!
Feel bad about chatting amicably then sending a downer review, but incidents like this could surely impact the future of any hotel.

Disappointing visit. When I arrived they had no record of my booking even though I had the booking confirmation from them. I had to book another room and pay cash. I am still awaiting a refund from Douglas Hotel / Expedia. The website does not indicate that they are not currently serving breakfast. Room wasn't cleaned the next morning.

We were only there for one night and had booked a superior double, dread to think what a normal double is like? It did not bother us that there were no staff on site as after calling, someone arrived pretty quickly, the room although spacious and the bed very comfortable, detail was overlooked, only one cup, so had to share a coffee and repairs required, TV did not work, the hotel in general is very worn looking and basic, on check out we attempted to call the proprietor several times, but no response and in the end had to leave without settling our bill, which now means we have to chase people to make payment, no way to run a business....

My room was cancelled at 2pm so nearly ruined the trip but the hotel owner redeemed himself by finding a hotel in Middlesbrough and paying travel not ideal but I think he did his best so as I say he redeemed himself

Booked a single room for 2 nights but decided to leave after 1. Here's the list of issues I sent to the owner/manager whose card I found at the unmanned reception...
Toilet seat missing
Bulb missing in over-bed light
Evidence of toiletries left from a previous occupant
TV had fallen off the wall and was propped up on the desk
Toilet roll holder missing
Basin shelf missing
Hot water tap on sink was a dribble so never went hot
Shower was barely usable
Skid marks inside toilet
Window catch in bathroom broken
Shower door off rails
The rest of the hotel was littered with items just dumped in shared spaces and corridors. Bins had not been emptied, etc, etc. The restaurant was closed and the promised bar/lounge too.
