This lovely boutique hotel exceeded our expectations. The staff is fantastic- so easy to talk to. And Chef Indika’s curry dinner was THE BEST WEVE EVER HAD. Don’t miss staying here and make sure you have enough time to enjoy being here. Two nights minimum!

It has the feel of a private house, lovely views from the top of the hill, above all a fantastic chef - the best food we have had in Sri Lanka

Beautiful house, looking down on the hub bub of Kandy. Close enough to be part of it, but out of the way to enjoy the stunning scenery and garden.
Very relaxed and welcoming, talented chef, experienced and friendly front of house team.
We loved our stay at The Elephant Stables.

OMG! What a placeOur regret is that we had only one night here. This property is simply stunning, perched on the hillside with its views overlooking Kandy. Checkin was smooth and welcoming. We were in the Citronella Suite which was spacious, clean and extremely well appointed. The bar fridge had free snacks to enjoy and nonalcoholic drinks also free of charge. Charging points (USB) for your various devices was also supplied in the room. The bathroom was also excellent and fully stocked with all requirements. As we only had a short stay we elected to dine at the property. We had the Sri Lankan set menu which was a banquet in itself. It would have to be one of the best Sri Lankan meals we have had since arriving two weeks ago to the country. The staff are also exceptional, from the chef that comes out to ask about the meal and the service staff that will do anything for you with a smile. Nihal who is barman and head waiter is also a gem. Must be one of the happiest and friendliest people in Sri Lanka. We also liked the in room information that provides you with where to go and what to see. Even restaurants close by are reviewed in their handy guide book. Could not recommend staying here enough and will be on our must stay places should we return (hopefully July next year).

Wow!! What a beautiful place to stay where everything was top class - the staff were so friendly and helpful and the food was lovely. Our room (pepper) was one of the nicer rooms we stayed in overlooking the valley and pool. Can’t fault this property! Just to note, it’s in a high position over Kandy with limited options in the immediate vicinity.

Lovely setting, high up and on the edge of town, so that you feel worlds apart from the bustle of Kandy, but still close enough to experience major attractions. No restaurants to walk to, but food at hotel is really excellent and reasonably priced.

The hotel was great, we initially rented the Sir David suite but chose to change to one of the cottages in the main hotel due to better facilities.
The staff were amazing! The kids had a blast playing with the resident turtles and running around the garden.
Food was one of the best we had during our trip.

The hotel was incredibly charming. It had a Victorian feeling, but the rooms and amenities were very modern. The hotel is on a hill overlooking the surrounding area. Get the breakfast! The food was excellent, service was incredible and the dining room is beautiful. The staff was incredibly friendly and attentive. The bathroom in the Lemongrass room featured double sinks and a GIANT walk in shower. I want to make a trip back to Kandy just to spend more time at Elephant Stables.

We stayed at the Sir David Lean Bungalow, which is about 15 minutes in a tuk tuk from the main Elephant Stables hotel. Although they offer a free shuttle to and from the hotel so you can use the pool facilities etc., we didn’t actually spend any time at the hotel so our review is just of the bungalow. We were greeted by Manjula and the very sweet chef (sorry, never got his name!) who spent the next 2 days making sure we were well fed and looked after. They were always around to help plan our days, arrange transport, suggest outings and then arm us with a mobile so we could call back at any time. They really made our time special and helped us get the most from Kandy. The bungalow itself is a stunning position, overlooking the river valley - it’s set a bit outside the main town but we enjoyed this. Beautiful (if not a bit dated) decor and a comfy bed - quiet evenings on the veranda were definitely a highlight of our trip.

We had the privilege of staying at the Riverside bungalow, placed about 10-15 minutes away from the main hotel. The calm and peace provided by this place cannot be surpassed. The ambience and attention of staff are second to none and the views to die for. I could have sat on the veranda all day! However, the bustle of Kandy is nearby and well worth the effort of taking a trip outside. A tuk-tuk driver was organised for us from the property for two outings (both of which were very successful and enjoyable, but it was a true delight to get back to our calm oasis away from the bustling town.

We stayed in the David Lean bungalow which sits a top a peak overlooking the river and the distant hills toward the North. Its quite location is just wonderful after the hussel of being in downtown Kandy. We had dinner in one night which good quality and the chief worked around our allergies without problems.
I would definitely recommend this place to others.

High above Kandy, a true oasis! Would have no hesitation recommending here for a short stay.
Attention to detail is lovely, only couldn’t understand why a beautiful colonial style house needed such an out of keeping extension?
Couldn’t fault the housekeeping or food. Beds & linen a dream. 4 of use stayed in The Cottage & had no problems - as long as you don’t mind walking through twin bedded area to shared bathroom. Definitely for a family.
Only criticism; need to rethink the pool area - loungers in short supply.

We were disappointed with the price. We couldnt check in even till 4pm due to room not ready because of previous late check out. We were hoping we can go in to wash up for 1 hr before heading out but we cant. When we are back from day activity, it was ready but tent was full of mosquitoes and other bugs. We were surprised that they didnt provide any insect repellent or use essential oil like citronella to repel them. I have mozzies around my ears at night. I was hoping the stay in tent will give my family and I different experience but it didnt. If you are light sleeper, dont take this room type as I can hear the train at 4+am local time.

While a bit tricky to find, it is a very special accommodation atop a ridge over looking the mountains south of Kandy. The dinner was truly gourmet and one of the best meals in recent memory. Breakfast was also top notch for a morning start. Will definitely be back.

Two night stay in Kandy made very pleasant by the Elephant Stables. The hotel is perfectly situated outside of the hustle and bustle of the city. Lovely rooms, great friendly service and food was also very good quality.

By far the best service we received in Sri Lanka, from the manager to the waiters and bartenders, all of whom went out of their way to make our stay as enjoyable as possible. Sri Lankan dinner option is extensive and delicious - highly recommended. Pool is fresh and clean, and perfect for an afternoon cocktail. Rooms and bathrooms are beautifully finished and feature several nice touches.

Great location in Kanye, an otherwise busy and fairly third-world city. ES staff were fantastic, and the hotel is gorgeous with a unique modern take on 60s/70s styling with a bit of colonial in there for good measure. The pool area is really lovely, and the food was brilliant.

I really loved how quiet and lovely this hotel was with such few rooms and quaint touches like suntan oil, lawn turtles and books on Sri Lanka to read while having a drink. There was a sitting room on the second floor that was nice for working. It was in the hills and nice contrast to be away from the crowds, noise and heat.

I would really recommend the Elephant Stables. It was great from start to finish. It's a small boutique type hotel, stylishly furnished with personal and excellent service. The view from the pool were great. The food was also really very good, as was the breakfast. The manager and staff were incredibly helpful as was the driver they arranged to collect us from the airport and who then took us to the various sites.
In short, we loved the Elephant Stables.
