This hotel was excellent - fantastic and helpful service, very clean both in the rooms and in the common areas, great food, serene atmosphere, and generously sized rooms. Our room had a balcony with a private onsen, which was absolutely worth the splurge. The view was beautiful. I was pleasantly surprised by how comfy the futons were when we slept. The location was convenient to the bus lines but still so peaceful and quiet. 10/10 stars, without hesitation. I would love to come back!

The breakfast and dinner was very delicious. The meals were made freshly with quality ingredients. The room was nice, the private onsen on the balcony was nice.

I liked the breakfast and dinner. The staff was very helpful. I did not like the charges for every lil thing. Seems like they nickel and dime their guests. The rooms were very worn. At one point I had to kill a big spider and water bugs. The pjs provided were heavily worked and so were the yucatas. Many of the room appliances were rusty or not working. Did not meet the expectations for a close 600 a night rate.

Excellent room & view. Private onsen was great and the room was a unique experience. Didn’t enjoy the food & they served the exact same meal for breakfast every morning.
Also, it felt a bit disingenuous to advertise breakfast as “private room meal”. The evening meal is not included, which costs 6,600 yen per person.

Quiet, private, traditional feel. Private onsen and dining options were nice. Beds very comfortable as well as other amenities that

Property was beautiful. Staff great. Food was only ok-must be an adventurous eater. Room was fine but not the cleanest. Cost is very high for what you get.

Wonderful stay. It was special occasion for my 40th bday and my boyfriend actually proposed in the room.it was magical. The room with the private onsen was like something out of a luxury magazine.

The setting of the property and the general idea is very nice indeed and a good introduction to a traditional Japanese stay. That said the property is looking quite dated and the rooms can certainly be cleaner, for the price paid this was not the complete first class experience I had hoped for. Overall the stay was good, but I was expecting something much more up market for the costs involved.

Had a great stay at Hakone Airu, the service was quick and polite, and the rooms were great. They also gave a lot of food for dinner and breakfast. the ryokan itself was quiet, clean, and we'll maintained. I would recommend this place to anyone. The only thing I would say could use improvement is that the wifi is very weak.

A very beautiful Ryokan in Hakone! When we first arrived, we were welcomed warmly by the employees. It is a very traditional Ryokan with Indonesian-inspired decor. We had to leave our shoes at the front of the hotel and didn't receive them back until we left the hotel. Check in was quick and seamless, and we were welcomed with a complimentary drink.
The room is spectacular. Large room with a balcony that hosts a private onsen/hot pool. Amenities were plentiful but we wished they had a smart TV with streaming services available. The beds were mats on the floor that the staff help set up while we were at dinner. They were very comfortable with big comfy comforters.
Dinner was delicious. We received the King Crab dinner but it was coursed out with other appetizers and dessert. They also offer complimentary Western or Japanese breakfast but we skipped out on that.
All in all, great experience and would love to stay longer for our next stay!

Atmosphere was unique and staffs were very kind. I wish they have the transportation service.

We LOVED our two-night stay here. It was the perfect way to end a 2-week Japan trip. We stayed on the 4th floor with a family of 4 (10- and 11-year-old children). Staff were so friendly. We loved our private balcony onsen, and there was a wonderful range of skincare products in our room for our use. Loved the private dining room (kids appreciated having a kids' menu option) and they'll accommodate food needs (e.g., I don't eat meat or raw fish and they gladly made substitutions). Kids loved their in-room massages. Easy 10-min walk to the train station, and while there is a (short) steep hill it really was quite walkable (for us, even with a suitcase). Would absolutely recommend this place to friends/family and would stay again.

This morning we were supposed to take the taxi to the train station and the hotel said they had reserved two taxi for us. But the hotel told us both taxis couldn’t come right before we had to leave, we had to walk to the station in the rain. We almost miss the train.

Excellent service and attentive staff who spoke rather good English. Food was not quite to our tastes, but the experience was great.

This property is dated and the room is small. Quality of foods for breakfast and dinner were below average and does not represent typical Rykan standard. I was misled by social media recommendation and the experience was really bad.

Amazing experience & excellent service from friendly staff. Would have liked a bit more choices in the food menu selection. This has been a very pleasant stay. Thank-you for your excellent service!

The room was beautiful and the private onsen was the cherry on the cake. Be sure to take advantage of the massage that is offered (additional $) but it had me snoring and in a very relaxed state of mind. The Kaiseki dinner was flawless too. This was a perfect break in the middle of our trip to rest our weary limbs.

We stayed here in November 2023 in a room on the 4th floor. Right from the get go, the staff were attentive, bringing a refreshing welcome drink ahead of checking us into the room. The room was lovely, with the tatami floors and beautifully decorated screen. The star of the show was the private onsen on the terrace overlooking the mountains. We would definitely recommend the 4th floor for the views, it was spectacular! The food was also delicious, with the kaiseki course for dinner in a private room, more and more food kept coming out and the variety of different japanese dishes was great to learn about traditional foods. Breakfast was also lovely, with the option to go with either a japanese or western style meal, again served in the private room. We found out stay here relaxing and rejuvenating and have already booked a return trip in 2025!

We were really looking forward to this healing resort experience but we were disappointed. In a place where we were looking to relax and rest after a week of walking 30k steps a day in Tokyo we were a bit disappointed in how stuffy it felt.
We knew this was a Balinese place so we weren't even looking for the traditional experience but from the moment we entered we felt really awkward, almost like we were inconveniencing them. The place just didn't seem very relaxing, more like a rigid schedule at a boarding school vibe. When we arrived we requested a late checkout but on the day of checkout they kept calling us... 1st to say we need to check out (when we already said late checkout), 2nd to tell us they will charge us for each other, 3rd time to tell us to leave. We requested 11 am checkout and we were in the lobby at 11:05.
The food was not good and if you want to change, good luck, cause you need 3 days advanced notice to change anything. It was so bad we went out the final night and I told them we wouldn't be there but they still called us about the dinner. They call you to make sure you arrive on time... Even after I said we won't be there. Maybe communication issue. I felt like we were getting punished for missing that horrible raw fish dinner.
Beds were not very comfortable.
For the money I paid there should have been a bit more flexibility to make it a relaxing resort. Next time we go to hakone we will not reserve here again.

This is an absolutely amazing hotel. If you want to experience traditional japanese hotel and onsen you cannot miss this!! We were here in our honeymoon and they made us a present even. Super friendly staff, super clean hotel. We loved it here and will come back for sure! :-)

Staff friendly but served by a trainee and is ok . Japanese cuisine good but will appreciate a little larger portion as I am ok but men may need some more

Very serene environment. The bedding and night wear was a bit musky smelling though.

A decent hotel, but priced at a level with truly traditional Japanese onsen . It is not that. It feels more like a chain hotel. The service is polite and good. The food is ok, not great.

This hotel has a standard 10 am checkout time. Because I booked with Expedia, I had a 9 am check out time.

Full disclosure, all we wanted was the private onsen. We didn't really care about having a traditional ryokan experience, so that may influence my opinion.
Pros:
* Large room
* Beautiful patio with private onsen
* Friendly staff and good service
* Fun to wear the traditional Japanese clothing provided
* Everything looked clean to the naked eye
* The TV in our room had Plex installed which was very nice for downtime and not something you find at many Japanese hotels
Cons:
* The Japanese food wasn't very good; Western food was fine
* Shortly after checking out, we broke into itchy bumps that look potentially like bedbug bites. We didn't see bedbugs, so I'm not stating as a fact that they were there. Just explaining what we experienced.
* After riding in a crowded bus then hiking 15 minutes uphill in the rain with heavy luggage to reach the hotel, I just wanted to get into our room. But we had to sit through a 15 minute checkin/welcome process including information intake that should have been collected online at the time of booking. I really did not have any spoons left to deal with that.

The room with private onsen is amazing , the dinner was the best in japan and service is the best of the best..

We totally enjoyed our stay at Hakone Airu! The property and rooms were beautiful and the private onset although a little too hot was very enjoyable! The meals were very generous. Be prepared for a lot of fish though. Even if you order the shabu shabu, you will get fish appetizers. The meals are definitely for those with adventurous tastes and we enjoyed the experience. The only thing I can say I didn’t like was that for breakfast we had to pay extra if we wanted a second coffee- that didn’t seem right. We recommend this ryokan.

I really enjoyed my stay, although I do feel the price was quite high for what I got. Check in was quick and I enjoyed the private room for meals along with my room. I ordered the beef meal because I’m not a fan of fish, but all of the appetizers were fish and I felt awful wasting food. Beef was incredible, way too much for one but alas enjoyed it. Private bath was really nice with pretty view as well, was nice spending time outside

We had an amazing experience staying at Hakone Airu. It is totally worth it, the staff is very friendly and helpful. An excellent choice if you want to relax and rest. The only thing we regret is staying only for one night, we would have loved to spend at least two or three. We enjoyed the food and drinks too, great way to live a full traditional Japanese experience!

Room is nice but the food was really bad.
