What an amazing and unique home. Enjoyed our stay, Jan was a fantastic hostess, very happy to share her knowledge of the area and cooks great scrambled eggs on toast.

Totally delightful! Lovely staff, great breakfast, modern amenities in an eclectic 117 year old house. Fascinating decor of antique and funk. You'll talk about it for days after. Good value

The property is unique. Classic villa with plenty of fascinating objects to admire. We loved our room with its quality carpet, beautiful lamps and most importantly a comfortable bed. Most importantly the warm welcome by the owner plus the timely offer of ' a cuppa' on arrival.

Such a cool place to stay, lovely people, old worldly charm, log fire, comfy bed and good breakfast. Just one small thing- pillows need replacing they have seen better days and weren’t very comfortable. Yes I would definitely stay again. Thanks

Stayed one night but would have liked to stay longer. Mark was fab, gave us ideas of where to visit and made us a great breakfast If you like bland hotels this might not be your cup of tea but if you like interesting and welcoming book here

The Shady Rest is a period B&B, which is full of character and has a friendly welcoming host.There comes a point where period and quality cross over, I felt that Shady Rest is reaching that point. I found the bed in my room very soft and uncomfortable, which affected my nights sleep and stay.So for character 10/10, but for comfort, 4/10.

I enjoyed a relaxing stay at the Shady Rest. Mark, the owner is very welcoming and friendly. He is helpful in providing a good deal of activities that can be found around the Takaka and Golden Bay areas. He provided me with a map of the Golden Bay area, and describe the many points of interest/activities to explore. The 100+ year old home has been nicely restored, and has modern comforts. The are numerous types of artwork throughout the property, and a wonderful common area in the back which has a bbq, plenty of shade, and a gorgeous wood table for guests to enjoy. The property is located on the main street through Takaka, and the main business area with restaurants, shops, and a Fresh Choice market is an easy 8-15 min. walk. The bed was comfortable, and the room was quiet at night. There are several nice areas of the home to relax, including an elevated front porch/balcony for reading or taking in the fine Tasman weather. The breakfast was nicely presented, and filling. A great fruit salad, cereal, eggs cooked to order with toast, and tea, coffee, and orange juice were offered. This is all served around a beautiful large wooden table in the dining room of the home, or outside in the common area if you prefer. I would not hesitate recommending a stay at this wonderful B&B.

Beautifully restored and charmingly decorated space, large, gorgeous rooms, excellent service and hospitality and delicious breakfasts. The host gave us great tips and advice for exploring the area and enabled the perfect experience in Takaka. Highly recommend!

Nice old building, welcome was great, had tea served and Mark talked us through the area. Room was nice and bathroom was clean, but there were a lot of dead flies on the carpets. It seemed to be run as a B&B in the main house and then a hostel or something in an outhouse in the back and they cleaned the main house (there was a rota hanging on the fridge for chores). The main reason I wasn’t that impressed was because I hung two dresses out on a hanger (one worn and one brand new) and the brand new one mysteriously went missing when we were out one day...

Mark was an excellent host and gave us helpful sightseeing advice and map. Best night’s sleep on our trip

The owner wasnt there when we arrived. The property is run down and smells old. No heating in the bathroom. breakfast was simple with no attention by a staff member. located right by the main road - noisey.
