Overall a little disappointed with our stay. I like the "vibe" of the hotel but it's a bit run down. For example, the front of the hotel is not well cared for and does not show well. At a bare minimum put some plants in the flower boxes. The pool area and hot tub are really nice. The pool was warm. Our only complaint here is the small thin tools that they provided. They were horrible - get new (better) towels. The room was fine and the bed was comfortable. We went to the game room which was a fun to have but about the half of the games we tried to play were not working. Again, this is why I am saying the place needs some TLC. It has a lot of potential but it's not well cared for.

Room smelled of chlorine. Pool lights and music on until 10pm. Not good for traveler looking for rest.

The hotel was great. The pool and hot tub looked great although we didn't use them. The bed was comfortable. We liked the large arcade area near the bar. Coffee in the room would have been nice

The hallways are just a bit noisy when you’re in the room. Otherwise a great hotel!
3.0
Do not get a mezzanine room if you want any sort of quiet. Kids will be screaming from 9am to 9pm in the pool area. There is a big gap under the door onto the deck and zero sound proofing.

The hot tub was out of order. There were no microwaves, coffee maker, ice bucket or cups provided for the room. We told the front desk clerk that when we booked , we asked if the hot tub was working and told yes. He told us there was too much chlorine and to just use the pool. It was our anniversary and it was ruined because of this below average establishment that we used to love in the past

Awesome pool area. Both the pool and hot tub could have been warmer

Spacious rooms with patios overlooking the pool. Some low key live music, lots of games and a fun bar. About 10 min from downtown. Overpriced in my opinion.

Our daughters fourth year in Iowa City and we only now just discovered this fun hotel. Spacious, funky and loads of things to do and areas to wonder. A great place to bring a large crew for a game weekend, graduation, family reunion, etc.

The Highlander feels more like a home than a hotel. Beds are soft and cozy. Facilities very well kept. We were so pleased to get a handicap accessible room which was perfect for our needs. A quiet and peaceful spot!

Sheets were stained. Bed was kinda low to the ground. Otherwise enjoyed our stay.

This place has everything you need. Food, drinks, an arcade, outdoor seating, a nice pool area and lots of lounge space. The staff are very helpful and friendly. We were there on a busy weekend but I never would have known. It never felt over crowded or noisy. I will definitely be a return customer!

Unique look. Nice cleansing products (soap etc) in room. Nice fire pit outside. Didn’t use gaming room in back but looked like fun.

We are proud parents of a Hawkeye football player who reside in Chicago and hail from NYC and NJ. We also enjoy international travel and have been blessed to be exposed to wonderful hotel accommodations. We especially appreciate the beauty of a great boutique hotel which The Highlander certainly is. We are so fortunate to be staying here for all our home games this year!

We loved it so much, we stayed again on our way back through. Pool and hot tub were very clean and well maintained. Kids are not allowed in hot tubs, which is extremely appealing. Adult-only swim begins at 9:00, but was not strictly enforced. The only downfall: traveling with visually impaired person and the hotel did not ask if accommodations were needed nor did they give warning about lacking an elevator. The steps are all black, making it very difficult to see the differentiation between steps. Some thought into simple accommodations would be wonderful.

No coffee makers in the room. Breakfast available for a charge but doesn’t start until 8 am which is late for a weekend. We needed to leave by 7 am so couldn’t eat. Staff was friendly. Bar served great drinks and had good music.

When we pulled into the parking lot, we were a little nervous. The outside looked run down & landscaping needing improvement.
However, the inside was just as the pictures showed.

Great, unique hotel that’s been fully renovated. First time staying but coming back for an Iowa game and likely for other events.

Easily THE coolest place Ive stayed on my cross-country journey. Hip, funky (ask to see Arnold Palmers autograph on the wall!) Comfortable place with EVERYTHING. You gotta see the pool. Bring your suit. Its amazing. Female designed and owned and every detailid just amazing. Get there.

We loved that this hotel was not a chain and owned by a woman! Nice touches and updated features.
Came up short in a few areas (pool area seemed a bit chaotic, bar seemed understaffed, and our sheets seemed worn).

There’s so much potential with this property! Someone obviously put a lot of effort into renovating this old hotel. The good: tasteful decor, beautiful pool area, many places to gather around the property- indoors and out. The Bad and OK - the staff - nothing great, nothing bad, just average. Mostly young, apathetic seeming employees, probably not noticeable except I’m a frequent traveler and it sort of stands out when staff is mediocre. Cleanliness - bathroom was likely cleaned but some hair was left on the sink and there was a scum ring around the sink drain, not great. Pool area - had a poolside room and we immediately could smell cigarette smoke coming from the pool area. While smoking isn’t allowed, it didn’t stop a guest from sitting just outside the garage doors and blow city smoke inside the pool area. Seemed acceptable to staff as no one intervened. Sorta like the old non-smoking areas of restaurants back in the day. From afar the pool area is gorgeous- decor, flooring, all great. Up close - clumps of hair in the pool, very dirty tile grout, tables not bussed, crumbs on the floor, no towels, hot tub closed, and cigarette smell lingered. Beds- not comfortable. Linens - ratty and worn. Exterior landscaping could use some work. Seems like they ran out of money making the inside pretty and the outside was an afterthought. I get the feeling it started great but it could definitely use some fine tuning.

Understaffed. The hot tub had a sign that it was closed but it did not look like it was broken. The pool area is fantastic with a convenient attached beverage/bar area.
Shower had water pressure and soap/conditioner/lotion etc.

Such a nice surprise and better than expected. The hotel has a cool vibey feel with modern touches as well as some amazing historical perspective. The customer service was excellent and the staff were delightful. I will return for sure.

Pool staff couldn’t wait to shut down on a Friday night. Went in for adult swim 9-10 pm, but she was already cleaning floors, pushing all the dirty floor water back into the pool! Grossed me out and we got out even thought there was supposed to be an hour left. Hot tub was not open during our stay.
We then went down to the supper club bar to check out the live music, but it seemed a local crowd and the bartender literally would not acknowledge us or take a drink order. Also, the arcade games were half broken and ate the tokens. So we retreated back to the room, ordered Mr. Beast burgers on door dash and left at 9 am.
This was our 2nd stay, but will not be returning.

Our poolside balcony suite was wonderful and incredibly spacious. The pool area is beautiful and the kids and adults all really enjoyed it. Dinner at the supper club was delicious and our server/bartender Doug was awesome! The arcade was a hit with the kids, and we even got to make smores on the fire pit after which was fun! The front desk staff were also great and so accommodating. Excellent stay!
