Great stay in historical hotel. Very clean and close to everything

Came here for our anniversary and absolutely loved the hotel. It’s historic and located in the middle of everything. We were easily able to walk to the restaurants, bars and convenient stores and loved being able to pop by our room when we needed to. It’s a stunning and charming hotel and we loved the rooftop during sunset. Everyone was kind and we would love to come back. The only thing that was difficult was the historic elevators, that while cool took a very long time to wait for which was a bummer as we had luggage and were on the 8th floor so we often took it to go up. Also the room had no view which we were bummed about as it’s located in such a stunning area. Despite this we plan to come back and stay again as we loved the hotel.

Lobby is nice. Service is as expected. Rooms are terribly tiny. Bathroom worse. Worse than Tokyo or NYC. No closet. Elevator horror show. Vintage which means one out of service. Original doors impossible to operate. Dangerous. Very slow. Even smaller. Ten minute wait each time. We will not stay at a Pali hotel after this.

Snarky service. Old hotel. Tiny rooms. Loud neighborhood. Generally unpleasant and not a good value

Hotel is nice but old (historic) but not up kept. The lobby and restaurant downstairs were remodeled nicely with a nautical theme but that’s about it.
The elevator is old school, with the steel cage that you have to pull back to go in and only one was working this weekend so we opted for stairs.
The rooms are small, noise insulation is minimal - you can hear the loud music/voices from the Gaslamp district, when people shower, and the hum of the motor from the mini fridge is annoying too.
Service at the front desk was slow. When we first got there we were ignored for a good 5 minutes - so we’re just standing around awkwardly until one of the three front desk people (who were “busy” typing away in the empty lobby) looked up.
Overall not impressed with the hotel. Only good thing was right next door to the American Comedy Co (came to town for a show).

The staff was very friendly and helpful. I enjoyed the brief conversation with a staff member’s about the history of the building. I will be staying here again on my next visit to San Diego.

The elevator system is hard to deal with

This is a charming historic hotel. With original elevator's dating to 1913. It was very clean, the restaurant was good, the staff was excellent. My only complaint is the window air conditioning unit. It was noisy when cycling on and off. I was in town for business and had early morning meetings, which is not fun when you don't sleep well.

Loved the super charming, historic Pali Hotel!!. Decorated beautifully with no small detail left overlooked, it transcended me into a much earlier era. I will definitely be back for the hotel and diner. I look forward to the rooftop as I did not experience this time around.

Rude staff - didn’t help with luggage (they shared they would put my luggage in my room for me), I could hear music and the bass from outside of my room and was told I would get a new room but didn’t - I probably would have been more comfortable in a holiday inn :(

The good: Beautiful hotel, great decor, comfortable bedding, great food.
The Bad: parking fee of $60 a night as a hotel guest is a rip off and the restaurant staff was beyond unfriendly, they looked so annoyed every time someone walked in the door, took forever to acknowledge us, the female worker would completely ignore us whenever we tried to get her attention. Took our order and never made our drinks. Elevator gate is very heavy, they need someone to help guest get in when they have luggage

An “historic” building so quirky rooms that are not for business travelers or for anyone that likes quiet or daylight. AC units very noisy and don’t get room very cool. Saw three rooms and all face interior air shafts. So stuffy. No desks and one little garbage can is bathroom for a suite and a one bedroom, which was odd.

We only stayed for 1 night, but very much enjoyed our time at the hotel. The staff is very friendly and accommodating. The Saint James bar and restaurant is fabulous!

One elevator was not working which was a nuissance. Room refridgerator was fully stocked with items for purchase, but we had items we needed to put in there so that was also a pain. Would be nice if the bar was open later and if you could spend time on the roof when the bar is closed. All the patio furniture gets covered and we were told we couldnt stay. I just didn't understand that. Otherwise it was a good place to stay.

Great vibe!We were in town for a concert at Petco Park. Easy walk to the stadium. The staff was very helpful and friendly. Great location. Easy access to the rest of the area. Definitely would stay here again.

I will say the rooms were quite small, but the location could not be better if you want to stay in the gaslamp district. This is the place to be at a reasonable rate.

Great hotel! The location is great and right near all the restaurants and nightlife. Enjoyed the uniqueness and history of the property. Rooms are a bit on the small side but very clean and nicely decorated. Loved their bath products.Enjoyed the rooftop bar and restaurant. Service was great. I would stay again and recommend.

Nice staff. Small room. Clean. Room service was prompt.
Might go back.

Hotel is very clean, but the rooms are very, very small. I was also hot all night, the AC didn't seem to cool the tiny room at all

Highly recommended. Rooms are small, and at the front of the hotel are noisy. Ask for a high floor at the back. All-in-all, excellent value and great staff.

Staff was amazing, thoughtful and accommodating,. Restaurant on site was excellent. Roof top bar was fun. Room was quaint and classic. Very old school hotel with original fixtures and decor, so not super modern but has everything you need. Old school elevator can be a wait at times when it’s busy. Great character to the whole building,

Beautiful and clean. Loved it.

Perfect spot for a quick night in SD. The hours of stuff at the hotel/restaurant (happy hour, rooftop access) were all so confusing and seemingly ended an hour before stated times / or were happening when posted times said not.
Building is old and rooms are noisy, the AC especially. One in my room turned into a freight train at 4:30am and I struggled to get it unplugged to stop the noise.

The decor was so quaint it had its original design.

Do not stay here if you are in a wheelchair. They still use the original elevator from 1903. It’s historic, so they have two cages. If you do go and you have a wheelchair it is accessible, but you need help with two ppl opening the gate.

We loved the hotel, the room was stylish, comfortable and clean. The French diner was excellent and the original hotel elevators were charming. The only downside was the noise from outside, being in The nightclub region Saturday night was impossible to sleep until after 3am. Sunday through Tuesday nights we didn’t have any problem. As much as I loved it I wouldn’t stay on a Friday or Saturday night again. The hotel does provide earplugs but we didn’t find these until the following day.

The lady that checked me in was very kind. The room was nicely decorated but the more time I spent in it, I realized how dirty and lazy the cleaning staff were. The sheets had black dirt all inside them, the lotion and soap bar provided by the sink were previously used, and the cage that kept the air conditioner housed was unlocked and not locked properly so it made terrible noises the entire night. Overall it was a pretty terrible experience and I don’t plan on returning to this hotel.
