My sister and I had an amazing experience at Makulu camping. Surprisingly the tent is very comfortable and has nothing missing. We slept very well and cheered the moment in the nature. The location is peaceful and quiet, a perfect time to relax, read a book and recharge. The chef, Ayon, is a great chef. The food was amazing! A very good chance to taste original local food. We have tried a local panna cotta made with buffalo milk and caramel on top. The safari proposed by Makulu is also excellent, since the drivers are very good and highly experienced so there is no need to get a guide. We will definitely recommend the accommodation to our friends and family!

So fun camping by the river surrounded by trees, wildlife and paddy fields, but in what felt like a remote place. So much nature. Tents were great with comfortable beds, en-suite bathrooms, and there was electricity for a fan, lights and charging phones! The meal they cooked for us was delicious, as was breakfast. Very friendly and helpful hosts, and we loved the evening jungle walk and canoe ride in the morning too.
Nothing, but this is camping so obviously you have to accept nature is there too!

Camping along the river was very appealing. The very strong rains made using the river impossible and it was quite damp for tenting, but that was not the fault of the proprietors. They arranged safari vehicles and guides and gave us very good advice about the length of the safari that would be best for our group.

Amazing location in the middle of the jungle, extremely friendly and caring staff. Diner was great, boat trip as well. Only three tents so setting is very intimate. Also went on safari, Pathum was a great guide!

Great staff. Helped to organise everything for us including the safari. The location is quite fun too as you are located essentially next to a little river and in sugar cane fields.
Tents are spacious and have a connected bathroom at the back separated by a zipped area to the bedroom.
The chef cooks a lot of food for meal times which is both great but can also leave you feeling bad as a lot goes to waste.
The tents are getting a bit run down. I think we were expecting a bit more of a ‘glamping experience’ but there was no hot water and the tents have a fair bit of wear and tear (nothing too major but something to note).

Our stay at Makulu was one of the highlights of our trip to Sri Lanka. A magical setting on the banks of a river next to the National Park. We loved the little boat trip, on which we saw a herd of water buffalo crossing the river. The home-cooked dinner was delicious and followed by a moonlit walk into the sugarcane fields discovering the local wildlife, from fireflies to cinnamon trees. Hosts were lovely.

We loved EVERYthing here. I do not have enough words to express how wonderful this place is; the service, the peace and tranquility, the environment, the delicious food, the attention to detail is 100% perfect. The boat ride was so peaceful and beautiful, waking up to nature, watching the monkeys, birds etc. Our hosts Danesh and Ranjen (I hope these are correct) were so attentive, showing us different birds and sharing interesting information. They surprised is with a moonlit dinner that was divine, cooked by Ranjen whilst Danesh took us on a boat ride.
The Wi-Fi is a bit temperamental but it works enough of the time and there are charging ports in the tent. Our regret is not staying longer. Thank you Danesh and Ranjen Bev and Paul

We loved the setting, the tent, the unique dining experience, the cruise in the river next to the camp, the night tour and the great team! Wonderful hospitality with a lot of interesting explanation about the wildlife, flora, agriculture and culture. Very much recommend!!!

The location was really special, felt like our own little private retreat in the jungle by the river. Dinner was delicious and lit by fire torches, campfire and magical fireflies! Staff were so very friendly and helpful. Safari was amazing too! We really enjoyed our stay and would recommend to anyone keen for a nights escape :)
We didn’t mind but be prepared that the tents have a beautiful aspect and verandah, but are fairly basic.

What a hidden gem ! We were so comfortable staying in this riverside camping spot whilst being looked after like kings in true Sri Lankan hospitality. perfect location to uduwalawa and lots of space for our 3 boys to play cricket while not on safari. staff were exceptional.

We were delighted with our stay in Makulu Safari Camp. You are in the middle of nature and you can fully immerse in the camping experience and the nature's sounds of crickets, birds and peacocks while at the same time having a very comfortable tent with a good bed and mosquito net and a nice bathroom.
Danush showed us the surroundings of the camp in a boat trip included in the booking and he explained us the local flora and fauna in an excellent way, he showed is the different birds types, bees hives hangig at trees, mimosa plants and other plants growing along the river and we finished the boat trip with a nice sunset.
We also did a tour also included in the booking through the sugar cane fields and tasted the sugar canes, as well as other plants growing in the camp and nearby (pepper, cinammon, curry leaves,...). It is far better than in a spice garden.
We also recommend to book the dinner with them. Sami cooked for us an incredible dinner and they prepared a table close to the river surrounded with fire torches and set up a bonfire, so it is the perfect setup for a romantic dinner. The way from the tent to the dinner is lit by many oil candles, which enhances even more the romantic nature experience.
On the way to the dinner you can see a lot of fireflies on the trees. Some trees look like Christmas trees at night with all the fireflies. Very nice place to relax and enjoy nature.

The food and the hospitality was exceptional. I forgot something there and they shipped it to me in Sri Lanka without a charge.
don’t forget it’s tents so there are insects and it does not meet the same cleanliness standards as a hotel. but they got mosquito nets. additionally it’s a little bit hard to find.

Great camping/glamping experience staffed by an amazing team. Staff organised pickup from the main road in a jeep (our vehicle couldn’t enter on the dirt road to the campsite), tents had two comfortable beds, solar powered lighting and an excellent shower / toilet. Rooms were super clean especially considering the tents are erected right by the riverside on the sandy ground. Highly recommend the dinner and bonfire experience, food was great. The river safari experience was also really fun, although the water level was very low that day so we were not able to go far.
We were in Sri Lanka in the middle of a fuel / diesel crisis. The power outlets and fans run off a generator, and staff tried to minimize the number of hours the generator was running (for good reason). We were told that lines to get fuel could be up to 24 hours long… so I understand the need to conserve fuel. Despite this we were able to have great WiFi, charge our phones, and fall asleep with cool breeze from a fan.
The safari guide arranged by the hotel was incredibly knowledgeable and gave us a fantastic safari experience.

Superb location in the jungle by the edge of a river, surrounded by Sugar Cane & Lotus fields. The guys were wonderful, very chilled and helpful, Sami’s an amazing cook, all the meals were delicious, definitely go for the local option too, at night the trees were hung with lanterns, the Sri Lankan curry lit by flaming torches & a bonfire was out of this world, made even more magical with the twinkling fireflies, every dish amazing… we were spoilt rotten. They organised a great guide for our early morning safari, very knowledgeable and friendly. definitely recommend, the kayak ride along the river at dusk was beautiful too…

The hosts were exceptionals, they were really friendly and nice :) . The campsite is amazing, you are surrounded by palmtrees while seeing the river. The tents have all the comfort inside so this was more of a glamping experience which was nice.
You can see many animals there, like varans, peacocks, birds and fireflies. We did the boat tour at sunset, it was really nice to be surrounded by lotus fields and hundreds of birds. At night, we had diner there, the set up was enchanting as you eat around a bonfire and the camp is only lighten up by torches. The breakfast and diner were really yummy and huge, highly recommended to eat on site. If you are doing a safari at Udawalawe National Park this is really nearby and a driver will comme pick you up on the campsite. Amazing experience :)

Beautiful place to stay in nature with many birds in front of the tents. The two guys who run the place are absolutely lovely and very polite. They make the most delicious dinners and lunch with many dishes (8 or 9 at a time all very fresh and tasty) with herbs from the surrounding area. They can tell you a lot about the plants and herbs. The bonfire diner they set up for you is absolutely special and unique so make sure you have diner at the camp. Fireflies in the trees all around :). The tent itself is very comfortable with a nice toilet and shower. Yes there are many mosquitos and bugs but with the net and a lot repellant you will be fine. Even if you don’t want to visit Udawalawe this place is worth visiting, including a nice boattrip at the river right in front of the tent. Thank you!
The place is hard to find, call them when you are at the main road parallel to the park, don’t follow google maps from there. There is no sign at the main road where to turn off but it it somewhere around Master Campers in google maps. When you are there they can pick you up.

everything! it’s such a special place. the setting is amazing, on the side of the river surrounded by birds, monkeys and peacocks, and at night there are fireflies in the trees. the tents are very comfortable and good quality, everything worked and there was even good wifi, which we weren’t expecting. every evening we had excellent food by the river with a fire. the staff were wonderful, so friendly and helpful. they took us in a small boat down the river to the lily fields, which was great. they also organised the safari to Udawalawe which was unbelievable. its worth doing the 6 hour safari, 3-4 hours isn’t enough as it’s such a huge park with so much to see. makulu made a packed breakfast to have in the park by the lake. after the safari, Maluku is a very relaxing place to spend the afternoon.
Maluku camping really is fantastic.

One of the most incredible experiences of our lives! The owner got in touch with the day before to help us organise our trip perfectly! we opted to book the safari through them which we didn’t regret! we had a fantastic driver and tour guide. we did the 6 hour 6am start and loved it!
The staff were so friendly and kind. taking us on a sunset boat tour where we saw so many birds. The dinner was such an experience. Sat by a campfire watching the fireflies!

Makulu is indeed a hidden gem nestled amidst banana and sugarcane plantation. We were in awe of the whole experience right when we transferred from our taxi to a safari car to get to the campsite. This campsite gave us the most magical experiences such as boat ride through lotus pond, fireflies at night, safari. The food is exceptional. Last but not the least the pillars of this place danish and samitha were the best staff we came across on our trip in sri lanka. These boys went above and beyond to make your stay joyous.
The lack of stable generator for fans. Iwe felt bad for the staff to have to go in the middle of the night to fgetthe generator fixed. But the boys did it without any hesitation. It would be great if the owner could provide them with sturdy facilities like that so tbey dont have to face such embarassment in front ofthe guests.

Secluded spot in an oasis of palm trees in the middle of farm land. Friendly host and nice safari guide. The dinner by fire light is special and all of it is great value for money.
A sign post on the road would be helpful

Staying in this gem of the place was the best highlight of our trip. Everything from getting picked up from our previous destination to when we were dropped off to our next destination was truly an experience we'll remember for a long time. The setting is absolutely beautiful, peaceful and serene- lush surroundings combined with the sight and sounds of the animals around. The host and staff are absolutely fantastic and this review will not give justice to how they actually were. Food was absolutely delicious and were of great portions and to have it out in the open air was so special (breakfast and lunch underneath a canopy of trees and dinner with the torched lights and bonfire). And of course, afternoon tea with cookies just before sunset...they've thought of everything!
Chilli, Sami, and Dhanoushka are great individuals who absolutely honed in on great hospitality and service - connecting with them was part of the experience...definitely go for a walk with Chilli for great conversations about Sri Lanka and about the immediate environment! Also, trust them with planning your safari trek as well because they connect you with great drivers. We also want to say a huge thank you to Dhanoushka for transporting us to and from the campsite - the ride with him was one of the best we've experience and converstations during our whole trip.
This stay could not be raved enough. One of the best experince through and through!
Maintenance or upgrade with the physical aspect of the tent itself...but that said, you are "camping" so this whole place was actually quite luxurious for camping standards.
