About this house rental
Welcome to the Horizon! This home was featured in Mn Monthly, Arch Magazine, Midwest Home, among others, and has won awards around the globe. Other than her sister properties the
skyHouse, and the smaller Aurora, there is nothing like this anywhere on Earth. These are unique, and are a limited design intended to inspire, not just provide a roof over your head. Enjoy the unique beauty of Grand Marais and the harbor from the panoramic window views of this beautiful home. Designed by celebrated Minnesota architect David Salmela to capture all the needs and dreams of a visitor to Grand Marias. Come enjoy this cool cabin in America's "Coolest Small Town". By design, the Sky House provides for all the needs of a vacationing party of up to 6 people in a 1264 Sq. Ft. home but 4 people are ideal. In addition, the Horizon provides an inspiring modern space that allows for privacy among those sharing the lodging, and also provides a breathtaking great room area on the top floor with fantastic views of the Grand Marais harbor, the neighborhood, and the town. Everything is in short walking distance from our little micro community in the heart of Grand Marais. Every restaurant, bar, coffee shop, gallery and Grand Marais' famous beach are all within a very short stroll from your private residence. The home is designed in modern Nordic fashion based on the original Stabur design- a work building commonly seen in Northern Europe. This design culminates a timeline of Scandinavian and Nordic design that the owners began on the property next door that also honored northern work buildings in the roots of their designs. There is off street parking under a sod roofed carport. There is also an electric car charging station in the car port. Walk up to the entry area and pass under the nordic arch to the first of 3 decks where there is room to store bikes in summer, and once inside, there is plenty of room to shake off the snow, hang the coats and set down the skis or snowshoes. Each bedroom is very private is separated from the other by a soundproofed floor and ceiling for maximum privacy. Each bedroom also has its own restroom with shower, work station, free standing closet, queen bed, and balcony or patio with great views for getting away from the group. Continuing up the inspiring staircase leads you to the primary gathering area on the top floor. This area is breathtaking with its expansive windows, view of the town and harbor, Lake Superior and the grounds. There is a fully modern and capable kitchen, an architect designed built in sofa for single sleepers, and a contemporary gas fireplace. The sofa can sleep one adult or two children as is, or it can be modified to sleep one adult above and one adult on floor cushions. Note the unique skylight with modern light treatments and the push button electronic pop up television that you can leave hidden if you wish. There is also a wrap around deck on this top level with fantastic view of the rooftops and harbor and the town and of course Lake Superior. There is a utility room with full size washer and dryer. Everything about the Horizon is designed with environmental sustainability in mind. These homes have an incredibly small footprint both structurally and environmentally. The foundations were designed to take up as little of the yard as possible- by being small at the start and increasing as you go up just like the old Stabur upon which this design is based. No cost has been spared to make the Horizon the highest quality, most significant architectural addition to Grand Marais' beautiful landscape. We hope you will find it warm, welcoming, and a once in a lifetime experience in one of the world's most magical places. Awesome house in a great location
Loved this Salmela house right in Grand Marais. The house is well appointed with everything needed to cook and eat in. The beds are comfortable, the living space cozy and the views of Lake Superior are wonderful. Lots of light and a great layout makes the place feel spacious in a small footprint. We hope to return to use the multiple decks during warmer! Wonderful communication with hosts. All in all, a truly lovely stay, in Grand Marais.

Perfect!
This property was ideal for our long work weekend. We each had our own private bed and bath and the upstairs served as a perfect meeting space for eating and working together. The sunrises over the lake were amazing, the kitchen was well equipped and the hosts were very responsive! Thank you for an amazing stay! We will be back.

This place was perfect for a small family gathering. Beautifully designed house with thoughtful touches and everything you need to feel at home while on vacation. Unbeatable view and location. Todd and Susan were great hosts, even bringing over some ingredients I needed on short notice to bake a chocolate cake! Can't wait to stay here again.

A Perfect Fit
Such a unique and comfortable place to stay in an amazing place and location. We had so much fun. The hosts give great recommendations on hikes etc. and we did almost all of them! The area is someplace we would like to retire so it was fun to be right in town and walk everywhere. Once the new roads/city design is complete it will be even more amazing! Highly recommend.

We all raved about the brightness, the view, and the comfort of Horizon the moment we entered the building. I missed that light and the view this morning when I got up at home and made coffee!

Perfect Spot
Todd and Susan have a lovely property AND they maintain it beautifully! Very clean, updated, and fully stocked in the kitchen, bath and bedding (including extra blankets for cool fall evenings) as well as a few board games. They did a terrific job preparing us for our stay at their lovely place- complete with where to visit, hike, and how to easily check in. They made it SO easy to stay with them! Thank you both for a lovely "home away from home!"

Gorgeous home in the perfect location!
We love GM and visit annually. We've been wanting to stay at this newly constructed property in the heart of town and were excited to secure a reservation. The space is lovely, it's well-appointed and the views are spectacular. Every detail is considered. The singular downside is that for a family of 4 it's tricky, as the 2 bedrooms are small with only room for a queen bed, so one of our 2 teens ended up sleeping in the main living area, which is never ideal for us. The space is perfect for 2 couples or a couple with a single child, but not great for a family of 4 with children who are teens and don't want to share a bed. We spent all of our time while at the home on the highest level balcony overlooking the bay--idyllic.

Wonderful Grand Marais Property
We stayed for 3 nights with our 9 month old baby. Loved the views from the balcony and the central location to lots of area attractions. Everything at the rental is as-advertised: simple but elegant design. An easy space to spend time in with plenty of privacy. Easy checkin and checkout. Grand Marais is not as pedestrian-friendly as we had hoped. Not always easy to cross Hwy 61 on foot, lots of traffic in town and not always good sidewalk options (if you have a stroller). But no complaints about this beautiful property. If we return to Grand Marais, will definitely stay again!

Clean, Modern, and Great Location
Fun modern place. Everything was clean and as described. The owner was always quick to answer any of our questions. Easy check in and check out process. Parking was not an issue, we have a bigger SUV and we parked just fine in the carport. Has a great view! It's only 1 -2 blocks from restaurants and shopping. We actually got snowed in until the plows came by so we all just put boots on and walked to coffee and breakfast. We would definitely stay there again. Thank you!

Simply Amazing!
Super simple. Super clean. Super convenient. We enjoyed a memorable, non-traditional Christmas at the Horizon. The architecture and design are so impressive as were the local art works hanging in the property. Everything we needed was provided from cutlery to games! We would love to return to enjoy this property and the Great Lake Superior to enjoy a different season. This site is withing easy walking distance to the shoreline, coffee house, pharmacy and restaurants/brewery. Thank you for the time and love you've put into this property and the attention to detail!

We look forward to returning to The Horizon house overlooking the lake
This was nearly perfect for our two couples spending a long weekend in Grand Marais. The views were spectacular, the location was very convenient and the house was more stunning than the pictures gave credit. You can tell the owners knew what they were doing and put a lot of thought into the details.

Great place to stay in Grand Marais
The property was in great shape: a beautiful, very modern design. Feels very new, which I think it is. The only departure from perfection was that I didn't get info on how to get into the property until I contacted the owners on the day we were driving up -- as there was a lot to do before leaving I could have done without one more thing on my list. That said, the owners responded promptly (within 5 minutes) to email, and there was no problem. Nice views, nice balcony, great proximity to The Angry Trout and the Fish Market. We'd happily stay there again.

Perfect Home Base
The Horizon served as the perfect home base for our trip to Grand Marais. The location does not get much more perfect meaning that even in the midst of winter you can walk to local businesses and restaurants without issue.
The house is impeccable from top to bottom and the entire design is perfect for two couples visiting the area. Both bedrooms and bathrooms are identically equipped with everything you might need as well as extra features to make your stay more comfortable.
The community spaces have everything you need to cook at the home or to relax in whatever way suits you.
We highly recommend this entire property (for a group of 12) or one of the buildings for a smaller group.
