About this cabin rental
Reserve your Nature Sabbatical! This vintage and charming cabin is the perfect place to unplug from the craziness of the world and reconnect with yourself, your loved ones, and the life you were meant to live. Science now confirms what the "Ancients" have always known, time in nature is essential to our health and well being. Take a break from screens and devices as part of your renewal time. Wander our many trails which offer both seclusion and stunning views.
University of Earth is a "Sanctuary of Sobriety" and intoxicants of any kind are not allowed on the land. At the Lost Sierra Retreat Center nature is the intoxicant, come drink in the "moonshine." Leave the cannabis, psychedelics and alcohol spirits at home. Come imbibe on the Spirits of Nature, you will be amazed at the clarity this can offer.
This delightful cabin was built in the 1920’s and has a peaceful nostalgic ambiance; truly a taste of a bygone era! We have named this cabin "Mt. Elwell" after one of the local peaks, and is one of a cluster of five cabins that were part of the Penman Peak Lumber Company established in 1925, which was a small working lumber mill until the mid 1940’s.
The cabins are part of University of Earth and the Lost Sierra Retreat Center. All the cabins are within walking distance of the National Wild and Scenic Middle Fork of the Feather River, which winds through our 40 acres. Stellar views of the Feather River, along with Sierra sunsets and moonlit nights, can be seen from the private back deck and riverside bedroom, along with many wonderful places to view the mountain peaks, Feather River and the local wildlife.
Located along scenic Highway 70, the Retreat Center and land is surrounded by U.S. Forest Service land and to add a nostalgic reminder of our industrial age in transition, and to the delight of many of our guests, the Western Pacific railway snakes along the river the length of the property.
Wander our many trails which offer both seclusion and stunning views. Swim in the healing waters of the "Medicine River." Our enchanting riverside sitting areas and hammocks make our retreat center just what the doctor ordered.
Our Nature Sabbaticals offer a unique opportunity in a truly magical setting for our guests to unplug and let nature become the healer and teacher. If you can, our suggested stay is three nights or longer in order to truly allow nature to have its way with you. For those so inclined, each of the cabins have suggested nature immersion activities and ecotherapy practices scientifically validated to promote healing, wholeness and enhanced creativity. Examples are walking barefoot on the delightful riverside sands and enjoying the health benefits of grounding while forest bathing.
Make this your base for exploring the Lakes Basin Recreation Area, Plumas Eureka State Park, and the surrounding areas. The Lost Sierra is a wonderland for hiking, swimming, and personal retreat.
The Lost Sierra Retreat Center offers indoor lodging for up to 30 in our charming and delightfully appointed historic cabins. Our two "Glamping" Yurts provide additional indoor lodging for up to 4. Our serene riverside primitive campsites offer an opportunity for deep nature connection and privacy. Host your workshop here!
Guests have access to most of the 40 acres, river sites and common areas. The river sites have Adirondack chairs and hammocks, and one site has a firepit (used as season/fire restrictions allow). The river may be accessed by an intermediate trail from the cabin area, or unpaved road (seasonally).
There can be an occasional train; there is no set schedule. Most guests enjoy it!
We have a "No Shoe" rule at the cabins. So, rock your sox - or slippers!!
We live on the property so are available to assist if needed during your stay, along with our staff.
Also to Note: Cell service can be spotty at our rural location. High Speed internet, if needed, is just a short drive away.

We stayed here for a long weekend with our family. The place was clean and stayed cool - even with the heatwave that affected much of the state this past weekend. We could not have been more impressed. The description of the grounds does not do it justice - just amazing. The trail to the river and seating areas (with hammocks!) was an added treat. We would definitely come back!

The cabin was so homey & warm we when arrived. Everyone was so excited about their rooms. The views were so beautiful & drew us outside to explore. Hiking trails lead to the river which always held opportunities to explore and enjoy our surroundings. We particularly loved watching the trains pass through. The overall experience was filled with family fun & memories to last a lifetime. Thank you so much for sharing your cabin with us.

Great Stay
The cabin was WELL stocked with linens, towels, basic necessities, blankets, heaters, comfortable pillows, etc. It was clean, Janet was amazing at responding to questions, we didn’t have to drive to play in the snow and it was an incredibly spacious living area. The kiddos thought it was amazing that all the rooms led to one another. I was pleased to see an abundance of dishes, mugs, silverware, etc. Many places we’ve been only give you 1 towel set & 1 dish set per person but Janet provided ample supply of both. The space heaters worked great, the wood stove was in good condition, and overall we had a wonderful trip. We would definitely go again!

Very accommodating beautiful property
Aside from the smoke of the wildfires was a great stay. Back deck is a wonderful place for morning coffee and chats. River down the hill is awesome place to walk down to and cool off in.

Relaxed stay in Lakes Basin
The cabins are very cool vintage cabins from the 1920's, making them somewhat rustic but with really nice touches and modern additions (new sharp knives! microwave, space heaters, well-stocked kitchen implements, quality eco-friendly soap and shampoo, comfy beds).
We loved the quick walk to the river and spent a glorious afternoon there, enjoying the chairs provided.
This was a great place for our family, using 2 cabins, allowing us to attend a nearby wedding. We immediately felt at home.
Great binder provides valuable information and hosts are in contact for anything you might need.

A Beauty on the Feather
This is an absolutely beautiful spot. The cabins are rustic in an aesthetic sense but provide all the amenities you'd need to be comfortable. The property comes with just a short walk down to the Feather River that provides an idyllic retreat for swimming, fishing or a meditative moment ...or all three!
Janet was a joy to talk with, we'll be headed back soon without a doubt!

Great place for a relaxing vacation in the mountains
Really enjoyed our stay here. The cabin was spacious and well appointed. We could see the river from the deck at the back and it was easily accessible via a short walk. Chairs and a hammock placed at different locations along the river bank was a nice touch. Overall I would highly recommend it.

Peaceful charming cabin
Our family loved the cabin, it was extremely clean and well-supplied with charming antique furniture. The location is very peaceful being bordered on most sides by tall trees with a river running nearby. We found several really nice hikes nearby. Our host, Janet, was incredibly helpful, friendly, and accommodating. Really a great experience all around!

Weekend getaway with historic appeal
Cozy, craftsman cottage reminiscent of grandma's house. The river and railroad tracks made for the perfect playground for our kids who generally need more dirt, sunshine, bugs and unstructured play in their lives, especially during Covid. Beds could use new mattresses but otherwise we were very comfortable and happy. Very nice people running the place. Excellent service.

Two Dog Ladies!
Thank you for having us on your delightful property. I loved the cabin's furnishings, cleanliness and the charm of an era gone by, kitchen was well equipped as well...Very much enjoyed the chairs placed around the property for viewing the river. My only issue is that you may wish to make it clear that while the cabins are on 40 acres- they are quite close together so that would not be my ideal situation when the property was all rented out, and the path to the river is VERY steep- so not really ideal for walking around the property- I had anticpated more walking trails- but still very lovely overall.

We love this house!
This house was perfect! Very spacious which was great with four grandkids staying with us! Loved the old style, cleanliness and how nicely each room was decorated. Beds were comfortable too! Only wished we had more time to see the surrounding area, we definitely will go back! The owner Janet was very helpful through our entire booking process and we actually had the pleasure of meeting her before our departure.

Great cabin in Graeagle
The cabin was very clean and attractive. The furniture was of good quality and very comfortable. Overall, the decor was nicer than any other VRBO we've rented. The location was great, right above the train tracks and the Feather River, close to many hiking spots. The owner Janet was helpful and friendly. We definitely want to stay there again.

The perfect getaway!
We loved everything about our stay at Mt Elwell. The home is very clean, decorated so cute, stocked with everything you would expect and more. The walk down to the river is easy and my husband fished the entire time. The back porch is the perfect hangout spot. We will definitely be back!

Mountain Property
Very nice location and views. The house was very clean and Janet was very responsive. I would only caution future renters that the space heater in the master bedroom isn't sufficient to keep the room warm so you need to leave the door open to the living room for warmth. You also can't access a bathroom without going through a bedroom which isn't ideal for people wanting to rest in two of the three bedrooms. The entry sign isn't visable at night because the light over it doesn't work so you should arrive before dark.

Treasure Of The Sierra Madre!
This property is a treasure in the Sierra mountains. It has a unique historical background of rivers, forests and trains.
Janet couldn't be a more wonderful hostess and creator of this precious jewel of a getaway. The cabin has all the qualities of a handbuilt home from the olden days and overlooks the beautiful Feather River. It is filled with antiques and all the supplies one needs for cooking and enjoying the peacefulness of the mountain life.

Lovely Classic Cabin
We loved this home on the Feather River. We were 2 families staying in the area prior to dropping off our kids at sleep away camp. We cooked breakfast in the well-stocked kitchen, enjoyed sitting on the back deck, had a fire in the fire pit, and fished in the river. We also did the Round Lake/Bear Lakes loop hike and enjoyed the brewery and pizza place in Blairsden. It was a wonderful wknd and great place to stay before camp drop off. Definitely a gem. Thank you!

This cabin was in the perfect location. Walk to the river right in front of our cabin for fishing and secluded riverside seating areas with hammocks, fire pits and chairs. Close to town for dinner out and close to 100's of hiking trails. Janet was a super host!
