About this villa rental
Travel back into old world Italy in this private villa overlooking the Mediterranean. Set on the idyllic island of Ischia, where the Talented Mr. Ripley was filmed, Villa Beatrice offers an authentic Italian experience with all the benefits of modernity including wifi.
Villa Beatrice was constructed in the traditional Mediterranean style: thick stone walls and red terracotta tiled roof. It was designed, built and furnished by a career diplomat whose various posts and extensive travels enabled him to gather an eclectic collection of statues, tapestries, rugs, furniture, and ornamentals which now decorate the house. The paintings are largely European, with a well-rounded collection of Mediterranean gouaches forming the nucleus. Many are of the mountain Vesuvius, destroyer and preserver of Pompeii and Herculeum. The villa combines the beauty of antiquity with modern convenience.
The villa is uniquely built into the side of a hill, so that all three floors have access to private, sun drenched terraces, shaded areas, and the surrounding land. The 4,500-square-meter gardens afford privacy, freedom of movement and views of the Mediterranean, including the island of Procida, (setting of the beautiful film Il Postino) the ancient island castle Argonese guarding the port of Ischia (as seen in the film The Talented Mr. Ripley), and the great volcano Vesuvius, dominating the bay of Naples.
The library of approximately 2800 volumes is on the third floor, and has an extensive assortment of books on art, history, exploration, literature, religion, and philosophy, as well as guides to Ischia, the sister islands of Capri and Procida, and such nearby mainland attractions as Pompeii, Herculeum, Naples, the Amalfi Coast, and Paestum. The library at Villa Beatrice is an excellent center from which to study Italian culture from north to south, in all its variety. Most volumes are in English, with many in Italian, German, and French. There is a study area at one end with a view of islands in the ever present Mediterranean.
The living room is the largest room, with antique tiles, two circles of chairs and couches, a desk at one end, other antiques dispersed throughout, and an open marble fireplace. There is also a CD stereo and a television. The living room exits onto the central terrace and outdoor dining area by way of a jasmine-covered loggia. The adjoining dining room also exits onto the central terrace where the temperate climate and garden enhance the pleasure of outdoor dining.
The kitchen, separated from the dining room by a service alcove, has been completely renovated, refurbished and enlarged in 2007. It is equipped with 2 modern refrigerator-freezers, five-burner grill, oven and broiler stove, microwave, dishwasher, and two sinks, all recessed in or arranged around a black granite counter top with wall tiles and cherry wood cabinets. Everything needed to prepare and serve sumptuous Italian repasts is provided in an efficient and pleasant environment.
The third floor bedroom, with adjoining bathroom and study has a private loggia with views of the garden below. There is also another small terrace outside an independent exterior door that leads directly to the gardens and then to the pool. The bed is queen-size. The en-suite bathroom has separate shower and two person tub. One of the second floor bedrooms has a queen-size bed, en-suite bathroom with separate shower and bathtub, and its own outdoor garden loggia. The other second floor bedroom has a queen bed, private arched porch overlooking gardens, and an en-suite bathroom with combined tub and shower.
The three ground floor bedrooms are configured as follows: one with two single joinable beds which has an en-suite bathroom with tub and shower, one with two single joinable beds that shares a shower bathroom with another smaller bedroom that has a single bed. All six bedrooms are elegantly decorated with tapestries, paintings, and furniture. All have bedside reading lights, ample closet space, and new orthopedic mattresses. The five bathrooms were all completely renovated and refurbished from 1998-2001.
In the gardens, a stone walkway meanders amidst secluded stone benches, flower beds, a shaded hammock area, four terraces conveniently dispersed at different altitudes, with sit-down and lie-down chairs, tables, and a large wood and canvas umbrella on the pool terrace. The swimming pool is one of the most beautiful ever made and has a fountain of Poseidon and three hydro-massage jets and is open from mid-May to mid-October. There is a large stone barbecue and countless plantings of beauty and variety - the pride of the villa. The sea, a five-minute car or short bus drive away, is visible from most parts of the property.
Over the late fall, winter and early spring of 2022-2023 the villa had a complete solar system installed. The entire house now has zoned AC. The house was also super insulated with an exterior re-do. The house is now Mediterranean yellow. We elected to keep some of the old photos showing the grey stucco as they are harder to reproduce but the yellow ones are the most current. We also now have an EV charging station in the garage. We hope you enjoy these improvements.
The rental fee includes all utilities. DSL line, computer and sat TV is included in the price. There is a washing machine, drier (line drying is nicer though) and weekly change of linen is provided by the staff. Guests have full use of the library. Garden and pool maintenance and immaculate daily housekeeping are also provided at no additional charge. A cook, babysitter, and driver with or without car are made available for an additional charge on an as-needed basis. The villa is available year-round as it is equipped with central heating and three woodburning terracotta heaters along with the open central fireplace. The minimum stay is one week.
Some Additional Information:
-- Look for Villa Beatrice Ischia on line.
-- The custodian has been affiliated with the place since 1970. He is a delightful and completely responsible man, non intrusive yet maintaining the place in top notch condition. He also is the latest in many generations of wine makers responsible for the family vineyards. His delicious, light, dry, earthy wine is available for a song. He lives right down the road from the villa. Give him a call on his cellular and he will pick you up on the docks.

Dan,
We had a wonderful time and your house is exceptional. Petro and his family could not have been nicer or more responsive. The property views are incredible. Sipping coffee and staring at the Bay of Naples is something we will never forget.
Thanks again,
Ed

We took our girls to Italy to celebrate their graduations and it was wonderful! It’s so peaceful, the view of the castle is amazing, and relaxing by the pool was a highlight. We enjoyed finding different things to eat at the grocery store close by (you can walk) and eating at the restaurant on the hill. They even came to pick us up. There is a bus stop by the store, but if you don’t feel adventurous, I would suggest hiring a driver (there is one who services the villa). Thank you to Pietro and Maria for taking good care of us and Daniel for sharing your home!

We had an amazing stay at Villa Beatrice. The property manager, Pietro, was kind, attentive, helpful, and such a sweetheart. There is so much pride put into maintaining the property, and it shows. Stay here! You won’t be sorry.

Villa Beatrice is an exquisite combination of old world charm and modern amenities. Spacious (there were 10 of us), comfortable and elegant, the Villa was perfect. The outdoor space, from the outdoor, spotless infinity pool to the stone patios & flower laden lanai, to the spectacular view of the sea -- simply magical. The multi-level floor plan made the space seem even larger and afforded a great deal of privacy. The Villa exuded warmth, as did its caretaker, who appeared each morning with pastries, just picked fruit and homemade wine. The website does not do justice to this Villa. JKL from Manhattan.

In July 2016, our extended family stayed at Villa Beatrice for the fifth time since 2002. The villa’s beauty and pleasures, and the island of Ischia itself, have never disappointed!
I agree with all the positive comments of other reviewers and the description on the Villa’s website. None of it is overstated. Villa Beatrice is fabulous. Ischia is a dream.
The villa is spacious and well tended, and was very comfortable for our group of 10. It is dramatically nestled into the mountain on four levels, with spectacular views of the nearby islands and the mainland from the rooms, patio, terrace, and pool. The stunning view from my bedroom and bathroom would almost overwhelm me. We all found that the building architecture, its period furnishings, authentic artwork and fascinating library allowed us to step back and relax and enjoy the riches of Italy in an earlier era - but with all the modern conveniences!
The beautiful infinity pool is perfectly set in a private, serene spot on an upper level surrounded by lush trees, foliage and flowers. From the pool and its area, you have gorgeous views of the castle nearby, the sea, and islands of Capri and Procida, and Naples beyond. We picked the fragrant lemons on the property and made lemon mousse. Our little one learned how to forage for pine nuts and pick the ripe figs.
Pietro, the caretaker, is warm and welcoming – he’s a gem. Never obtrusive, yet he’s always available to help. He provided excellent wine that he made and he often left us fresh eggs, fruit and baked goodies from nearby. He helped us with travel arrangements and saw that we got to Borghetta, a superb restaurant nearby.
We went to different spas on the island (our favorite is Poseidon) as well as the public beach (Maronti), and it was all fantastic. The food everywhere was wonderful, including at the spas and right off the sand of the public beach.
Through the years we have been to Villa Beatrice with teens, young children and seniors and all of us had a great time at this villa and on the gorgeous island of Ischia.
If you go, I know you will enjoy!

Stephen and I have only been back in the notably cooler Uk for a week after our amazing wedding and honeymoon in Italy. We have been reflecting on the amazing time we have had and in particular at Villa Beatrice.
The villa is exquisite and exceeds the expectations in every way. We had the most wonderful time there, and one that we will all remember for a very long time indeed! The wedding was perfect at sunset by thr floodlit pool, Tina and the young lady that came with her to do the makeup were fantastic and all of us had a wonderful experience having them make us all “beautiful” for the event.
The dinner at restaurant Borghetta was too amazing to describe!! it could not have been better, we got to dine in the private Chapel, , service perfect, food was superb, delicious and so beautifully presented. We could not have had a better wedding meal!
We cannot talk about Villa Beatrice without recognising the incredible Pietro, what a gem. There are not enough wonderful words to describe this man. He was like a guardian angel, and we know that he in the background was making sure that everything was perfect for us, including the transport to the restaurant Borghetta, which we will never forget. It seems that Pietro was like some magician who just appeared at the perfect moment, and he just knew what was needed and when.
Daniel, thanks again so much for the opportunity to enjoy what will be one of the most special and memorable times of our lives at your villa. Thank you also for all your help and guidance with the contacts for the hairdressing, restaurant etc, so appreciated.
We absolutely loved Ischia, what a beautiful slice of heaven it was. We very much hope to return to Ischia and we would love to come back to villa Beatrice.
Thanks again for everything Daniel
regards,
Kim and Stephen

Our group of close friends, "The Ischia 8" as we nicknamed ourselves just returned from a week on Ischia nestled in the warmth, the charm, the unparalleled beauty of the island AND Villa Beatrice itself! Warning: Stop reading now if you just want a villa to sleep in and nothing more. Because Villa Beatrice is a memorable Holiday all its own. The pictures on the website are just a "tease" a precursor as to the what Beatrice is in person. You will fall in love at first sight with the architecture of its exterior, the Neapolitan style and grandeur of its interior, the almost angelic glow that surrounds the whole villa at every turn. You'll want to unpack and just stay forever. Especially when Villa Beatrice's caretaker for 40 years gently knocks on your door with his warm smile and graciousness and some "home made" vino in one hand and fresh figs and oranges in the other right off Beatrice's trees. With eight people spread over six roomy and oh so comfortable bedrooms we had time to all be together in the oversized living room and adjacent outdoor area or to "get lost" on any number of verandas, terraces or loggias. And that pool...that POOL. An infinity pool nestled amongst magnolias, palms and bougainvillea with an infinite view to match. Take a dip and take a panoramic look at neighboring islands Procida and Capri in the Bay of Naples as well as the mainland itself. On a clear day--every day--you could see forever. Oh yeah, turn on the jacuzzi jets in the glorious forty foot pool and treat yourself to aquatic massage therapy. It's all "on the house". I could go on and on but you know what--just "GO"! And one more thing--since you WILL want to explore this piece of Paradise called Ischia, do contact a great English speaking gent named Dion. Check him out at Ischia Review--he's got great suggestions for boat excursions car and drivers and the BEST massage therapist (Pierrre Angelo) I have ever had in the privacy of my room at Villa Beatrice. I have to stop now--the urge to return is too strong. But the Ischia 8 will return sooner than later, that's a promise. Ciao for now!

We had a spectacular time and the weather could not have cooperated better. We thoroughly enjoyed the villa and everything that it had to offer. Pietro was a dear and the pool and lemons right off the trees were a real treat. We loved the restaurant up the hill as well as cooking in and dining al fresco. We rented two cars and explored the island in great detail throughout the week. We also explored by foot with many hikes. We spent a day in Capri meeting up with friends who were there for the week with a beautiful lunch and boat ride. We all agreed through that Ischia is the far better island! I love how it has not been ruined by development and over run by tourists. A day spent on the water boating around the island with swimming at perfect locations and stopping for a delicious lunch on our last day was divine, especially as it turned out to be the hottest day reaching 94 degrees. We were all sad to leave. We are all still talking about it and look forward to one day returning to a truly special island with truly special people.
Thank You!

"I recently returned from my third visit to Villa Beatrice with family and friends. The first trip was over ten years ago and over the years the experience has only gotten better. We've rented several villas in different parts of Italy but we are always drawn back to Ischia and the special hospitality at Villa Beatrice provided by its housekeeper, Pietro. He has a wonderful disposition, is extremely attentive to our needs, and he provides us with his own wine, which is very good and very inexpensive! The home is private, the view of the bay of Naples mesmerizing and the experience, unforgettable!"

We had a wonderful two weeks and I wanted to thank you for sharing your home with us, a thoroughly enjoyable & memorable stay. Pietro was a true gentleman and deserves special mention. Make sure you visit Franco's restaurant Borghetta, a delight to the tastebuds.

There are many positive comments on this site about Villa Beatrice and I can only smile in agreement. They are all true. Our family has visited Ischia and Villa Beatrice 4 times beginning in 2002, and we are planning to go again next year. There are 10 of us from different households, and we’ve found Villa Beatrice a perfect setting for the family to relax, reconnect, and relish in the beauty of the island and the villa. The villa, with its different levels, rooms, alcoves, terraces, and balconies provides so many options for places to just be. I was often drawn to the main terrace early in the morning with its view of the bay and the castle. Usually Pietro is around, always unobtrusive, doing chores or caring for the grounds quietly, until he appears with fresh ripe figs, or other fruit from nearby, or warm pastries from a local bakery. He is a gem. Warm, kind, and helpful in every way one could imagine. Once he contacted a cousin of his to help us retrieve a suit we had left in a hotel in Naples! He shares his delicious home made wine, helps with information about Ischia and dinner arrangements, and in his welcoming way always makes everyone feel completely at home. We love the island, especially days spent at the Negombo spa, and exploring, shopping, and eating in many of the towns that hug the coasts. But some of our best memories are of being at the villa. The pool is state-of-the-art and the grounds and view are just stunning. Pietro can arrange dinner at the villa, and coming home from the beach to find dinner set up on the terrace is a dream. The many courses are always superb and Pietro serves them graciously. We sit there for hours, long after the sun goes down, enjoying Pietro’s wine and special desserts. I can assure you, you will not be disappointed with a visit to Villa Beatrice and Ischia.

In agreement with all the other posts here, we very much enjoyed our stay on Ischia. The house and the island were both lovely. Our young children spent hours entertaining themselves in the gardens. There were more bedrooms and space than our group of four adults and four children ever needed. The house is loaded with charm, including art and old books galore, and comes with Pietro, the house manager, a true treasure. Pietro's warmth, help and fabulous white wine were important parts of our time at the villa. We did not rent a car, but used the island buses extensively with an occasional taxi. The bus stop is just a few houses away. We left the island to visit Herculeum and Paestum, but otherwise hiked and explored Ischia, eating our way from one end of the island to the other very happily.

My journey to Ischia began with a well-timed connecting flight from Paris to Naples. The bus to the port picks up passengers at the airport and makes 2 stops, first at Piazza Garibaldi and finally at the port. Within 30 minutes of leaving the airport I had found the next ferry to Ischia . For a first-timer like myself the trip was practically seamless.
My stay at Villa Beatrice was beyond extraordinary. Imagine waking up every morning with fresh air and cool breezes coming through the open doors of the private terrace just outside the bedroom.
Fresh pastries, still warm from the baker’s over, and home-made espresso accompanied me on the patio for my morning inhalation of the visual eclipse created by sitting in solitude on an island praised by Homer and still inhabited by the mythological Typhoon.
Villa Bea, as she sits in complete privacy perched atop a mountainous flank in the region of Fiaiano, facilitates breathtaking views of the ocean, the surrounding islands, the bay of Naples and Mt. Vesuvius, which still puffs clouds of white smoke like a Union Pacific steam locomotive.
Upon first arriving to the Villa I felt as though I were a wealthy Roman escaping the pressure and stress of the busy urban world.
Each bedroom remains with a generous dose of old-world charm, while strategically incorporating new-world amenities. Each room is uniquely decorated with original furnishings, decorative items and artwork. The kitchen is fully modernized and suited for inventing your own Italian feast. Since a large supermarket is located a short three-minute walk from the Villa, I had the joy of being able to cook dishes with local and fresh meat and produce.
Each level of the Villa has access to the beautiful gardens and lounging areas that comprise the property. Many of the bedrooms have outdoor access or private balconies. Adjoining the Master Suite on the third level is a marvelous outdoor terrace that leads to the luxurious in-ground pool adorned with its own mystical Fountain of Poseidon. On a still afternoon the water appears to be nothing more than a giant mirror imbedded in the land and reflecting the plush surroundings further exemplifying the intense serenity the Villa upholds.
Pietro, who is the Villa’s groundskeeper, is also her defacto Mayor. Though his English is limited he has had many years of experience in practical communication. On my first night I arrived later in the evening and he still took the time to welcome me, give a tour of the premises and provide excellent recommendations for a late-night supper at a nearby restaurant. In addition, he surprised me with daily deliveries of astounding white wine from his personal vineyard; a warm-hearted gesture that exemplified Italian hospitality.
After my stay at Villa Beatrice I couldn’t help to believe and further insist that I should not leave, for I felt truly at home.

We were guests at Villa Beatrice in late September 2002 with a group of friends. We had one of the best holidays we’ve ever had and are returning again in June 2006. Villa Beatrice never failed to captivate us with its special qualities: whether its private and peaceful hillside site with a sweeping view of the Bay of Naples and Mount Vesuvius, the elegant and tasteful rooms, the pool (I understand now re-built with ample proportions), the library fit for an Oxford don, the gardens, and of course the addictive food and wine. Pietro was a charming host having picked us up from the ferry for the ten minute ride to the villa and prepared many memorable meals. Neighbors invited us to help harvest grapes for their wine which we happily accepted and enjoyed. Since it was our first visit to Ischia we had many new places to explore. We discovered Ischia to be ideally sized and offered many varied villages and landscapes. We particularly liked the hike up to the top of the ancient volcano Mount Epomeo to be rewarded with a cafe at the summit, and others enjoyed mud baths at several of the thermal spas. The late British composer William Walton’s “La Mortella” gardens are exceptional, especially after lunch at a waterfront restaurant in picturesque Lacco Ameno. Ischia and Villa Beatrice are rare places. We can’t wait to return.
