About this cabin rental
This rustic wooden mountain cabin is situated next to a forest, in a secluded spot away from the main house, on a 3.5 acre farm. At an elevation of 2,100 feet, it avoids the summer heat at sea level ('Cool and peaceful..' - Teri), yet is close to Kealakekua Bay (5 miles), kayaking, horse-riding, the Captain Cook Monument, Place of Refuge, and wonderful snorkeling. Ten minutes south is a small shopping center, with supermarket, Chinese restaurant, sandwich shop, bagel shop, pizza restaurant, etc. Three miles north is Kainaliu Town, with theater/cinema, Blue Ginger Gallery, clothing stores and other quaint places. One of the finest restaurants in West Hawaii (Keei Café) is less than 15 minutes away, and there are other lovely breakfast, lunch, dinner places and coffee shops nearby. From the cabin, a short walk across the property and along private paths through coffee fields leads you down a road that takes you through natural Hawaiian flora.
The 760 square feet cabin consists of a living-room, sleeping loft, bathroom, and well-equipped Hawaiian-style lanai kitchen with screens that look into the forest ('The forest is full of birdsong' - Claudia & Chan). A redwood deck is situated under the kukui and macadamia nut trees, and has a Polynesian gazebo. A charcoal barbecue ('An evening barbeque and wine on the deck - perfect' - Barbara & John) stands nearby. The cabin itself is a single wall structure built from exterior plywood. It does not have sheet rock and, like other Hawaiian-built cabins and coffee shacks, the plywood constitutes the inner and outer walls. Windows are aluminum and glass. The kitchen windows are wood, glass and screen, allowing for excellent ventilation.
The farm has three beloved and gentle dogs, three cats, sheep, and chickens. The farm critters are kept in an area at the upper south end of the farm, and the cabin is at the lower north end, some distance from them.
Guests will find fresh farm eggs, homemade bread, a fruit basket, Kona coffee, and other goodies to get them started.
Also worth noting - Jeffrey is an enthusiastic table tennis player. There are four clubs on the Big Island so if you play, bring your equipment!
Generally our guests' feedback is that the cabin is a comfortable place to hang out, read, watch movies and just unwind, or a cool base to return to after swimming, snorkeling and exploring the warmer locations elsewhere.
The proximity of the cabin to the forest means that there are a variety of forest sounds that can be heard - lots of birds in the morning, and tree frogs at night (especially in the wet summer months). As in any woodland setting, nature makes itself known!

A wonderful experience in the "back country" of the Big Island! Our hosts Jeff and Heide were very accommodating, providing us with just-baked bread, eggs, fruit and lilikoi jelly. There are two friendly pups who visit occasionally and a myriad of different birds to watch and flowers and trees to explore on the grounds. The cabin itself is cozy, well-appointed, with everything you would need for a getaway. Although we were lucky with dry conditions, you will need a 4-wheel drive as roads are steep and can be slippery in wet. We were thoroughly enchanted with this area - away from the Kona hustle and bustle, but close enough to visit beaches and restaurants. Special shoutout to the amazing hospitality provided by our hosts Heide and Jeff - we hope to return soon!

The property is like a botanical garden. It’s beautiful and beautifully maintained.
The rental is down a small hill from the main house. 4x4 recommended to get up the hill, especially when it rains.
This is exactly the type of property that my wife and I enjoy the most.

We have rented many VRBOs but this was the first time we took our hosts to dinner. Jeffery and Heida are awesome and so thoughtful. We loved our stay and loved our hosts.

We feel so lucky to have discovered Jeffrey and Heide’s cabin. It exceeded our expectations in every way. The setting is so peaceful— the plants and animals really added to our enjoyment, not to mention the cabin itself which is unique, cozy, thoughtfully designed and well stocked. We appreciated having everything we needed— including snorkel gear, beach towels, and even water bottles. We have stayed closer to Kona on previous trips to the big island but have decided that we prefer this part of the island. It is cooler and was a bit rainy at times, but we were close to everything we wanted to do and away from the more tourist-heavy spots. A short drive took us to the sun and we liked being able to escape to cooler temps. The coqui frogs serenaded us every night— they didn’t bother us at all, but there is a white noise machine and ear plugs available if you need them! Our favorite part was probably Jeffrey and Heide who are the loveliest rental hosts we’ve met! It was a joy to stay here and we hope to return!

Jeffrey and Heidi are good hosts and sweet people. The cabin is behind their house but very private. The elevation makes it cooler in the evenings which we really liked, plus it’s far enough away from everything that it feels remote but also close enough to all the greatest spots on the Kona coast. The cat and dogs are friendly and the cabin is so cozy that we spent a few evenings just relaxing, stargazing and listening to all the sounds of the rainforest. The kitchen is very well equipped for making meals and in general the cabin had everything we needed. The frogs can be loud after it rains so definitely bring earplugs just in case. They make a really cute sound but they can be a lot. There are a couple of boogie boards, snorkel gear, coolers, beach towels plus the hosts stocked the fridge with some basics like milk and butter and fresh eggs from their chickens. Kona coffee, fresh fruits, freshly baked bread and home made mango jam was also waiting for us when we arrived! We will definitely stay again when we come back to big island.

This romantic, cozy cottage was absolutely a dream for me and my husband on our honeymoon. It was the perfect size, had everything we needed, plenty in the kitchen to work with, and the most BEAUTIFUL view in all directions. Jeffrey and Heide were very kind when they greeted us, available whenever we needed them, and also had fresh fruit, macadamia nuts, bread, and jam ready for us when we arrived. We stayed 10 days and it felt like we were locals living on the island during that time. We have no complaints. To us, the frogs at night was a pleasant sound. Nights were chilly but nothing an extra blanket couldn’t fix. We are so grateful we found this place at such an incredible price, it really was a luxurious experience for us and an unforgettable stay. Highly recommended!!!

We had a few days on the big island and wanted to split our time between the Kona area and the Hilo area. This place was PERFECT for us as we wanted to avoid the hustle and bustle of Kona but be close enough to do all the snorkeling we could pack in and hit as many different places as we could. We loved the location of the cabin as it suited our needs and wants to a T. It was easy to get where we wanted to go and do all the things we had planned. Jeffrey and Heide were amazing hosts and the cabin is very lovely. The yard is a dream! A truly amazing gem of a place to stay. Well appointed with everything you could need or want. The fresh bread, fruit and amazing passionfruit jelly were such lovely touches. Cute friendly dogs too! 100% recommend this place if you are looking to stay somewhere a bit remote but accessible to the area.

This cabin is in a perfect location 2,000 feet upslope of Kealakekua Bay. Surrounded by trees and woods, with daily visits by Cardinals, Kalij Pheasants, Saffron Finches, a mongoose and a chorus of Coqui frogs, you are in nature, not at all a resort or beach feeling. That works well for me. Hosts are lovely people, and make sure your stay is perfect. This was my second time staying in this cabin.

This cosy cabin in the forest was the ideal spot for us; Jeffrey and Heide were wonderful hosts and thought of every little thing to make us welcome! Thank you!

My wife and I were looking for a quiet place to spend time away from the people and traffic of the west side of the island. This was the perfect place with a lush tropical yard and comfortable house. Jeffery and Heide we’re excellent hosts and provided us with a freshly baked loaf of bread and a bowl of fruit when we arrived. Everything you need to be comfortable is there, including a hammock which I really appreciated. If your looking for a peaceful place that’s not far from everything, this is it.

What a jewel of a place! Heidi and Jeffrey are fabulous, friendly and their menagerie of pets make their little cottage feel instantly welcoming. All the little touches (including fresh bread, fruit, and flowers) make up for the slightly hairy road to get to it. While paved, it is narrow and steep in places but takes you up into a quiet, cool forested garden away from traffic. Thank you again for a lovely stay. We'll be back as soon as we can.

First of all: we hope to come back one day!
Heide & Jeffrey are fantastic hosts and provided an excellent communication beginning with our booking to saying goodbye!
The location is appr 40min away from Kona airport and easy to find. We loved that the house is not in the busy beach area, but at a more quiet area where locals live. We were greeted by lovely dogs and home made bread, fresh fruits and vegetables and got tons of information how to best spend our days on big island!
We loved the sounds of the coqui frogs that start at 5pm and continue throughout the night :-)! If you are sensitive to noise you should consider this before booking! If you caught too much sun at the beach you will love that it gets really cold during the night and we never used the aircondition.
Every window is covered with mosquito/fly screens so you just need to worry about them when being outside of the house (but mosquitoes are what you get when staying in the jungle ;-)) …
Heide did a wonderful job with the house and it was the best equipped Appartement we ever stayed at - you really don’t need to bring anything. The kitchen is fantastic, you will find snorkeling gear and even a laundry machine and dryer :-)
You need a car to drive around the island no matter where you stay, but be aware that there aren’t that much street lights and it will be a 5min drive up the road to the house!
It will take you appr. 10min to the next Supermarkt, 20min to the beach, 30min to a shopping and dining area and 2hrs to the volcano national park but the roads are in very good condition and it is easy to find your way around the area!
Heide and Jeffrey will help you to
figure out where to go and you will find lots of things to do in and around captain cook!!
We had such a wonderful time on big island and the “colorful jungle cabin” played a huge role in that!
Thank you for providing such a gem to your guests!!

Fabulous oasis in the trees
We loved our stay at this cabin on the Big Island. Heidi & Jeffrey were just the most welcoming and friendly hosts I have ever dealt with. We were greeted late night in the dark for them to show us around and leave us fresh bread, jam and fruit ! The place was comfortable and perfect for relaxing after our Big Island activities. The kitchen was lovely to work in and well stocked with condiments. The bed was so comfortable. We slept so well listening to the lull of the coqui frogs. Even though it was a little tricky to get to Jeffrey's directions made it easy and we had no problems. The location was good for sightseeing north or south of us and there are some good snorkeling locations close by. Would love to go back in the coming years!! Do not miss the Captain Cook Farmer's Market on Sunday!

The Perfect Getaway
Jeff & Heidi were the perfect hosts! They waited up to show us around the property and even had a fruit plate and fresh made bread waiting for us. The cabin itself was perfect and much larger then we had thought! We went to sleep with the sounds of the jungle each night and woke up to beautiful bird song in the morning. A perfect location to explore all of the island - we went from Kona all the way to Hilo! We can’t wait to come back again soon! (:

A peaceful cabin in the lush Hawaiian Hills
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this cabin in the hills. Our hosts, Jeffery and Heidi, are a sweet and engaging couple. We were there for over a week to see and experience the Kona side of the island. This cabin is secluded, secure and peaceful – there are the frogs and birds to serenade the visitor. We picked this cabin because of its location, eclectic interior and price. We were very pleased with the décor and first-class photographs and art on the walls.
The cabin has character and reminded us of a Minnesota north-woods cabin crossed with a rainforest tree house. Ventilation and lighting are great. Though the cabin is quipped with a nice TV with full viewing services, we did not find the desire or need to use the TV but simply enjoyed our setting.
Two things we adapted to were first the drive up the hill on a one lane road – mind the speed bumps. We got to see how many residents live, several small farms, and learned to give the traditional Hawaiian wave. The second is where to take an evening walk – the access road hill is steep. There is a nice multiuse park within a ten minute drive and it has a nice flat field to walk the perimeter or even the nearby residential zone.
We would certainly stay here again and recommend that visitors to this side of the island consider this location – specially those that want to avoid the resort crowds, noise, and prices.

Thoughtful attention to detail
Jeffrey and Heide have clearly made attention to detail and making their guests feel welcome and comfortable a top priority. The cabin is very well equipped and cozy. They have anticipated their guests every need from a welcome local fresh fruit/bread/eggs basket to travel coolers, to boogie boards, to snorkel equipment, to slippers, to beach mats and towels, and more. Without being intrusive, they are always available to help or suggest activities, restaurants, and more. This was our second visit to Koa Cabin and it was just as wonderful as we remembered from our visit a few years ago. We look forward to the next time.

Great stay
We spent a week at Heide and Jeffrey Cumes' Koa Cabin on the Big Island and cannot recommend it highly enough. It is a funky art-laden space surrounded by green (and those weird little frogs whose chirping actually becomes comforting). A very private location but still close to the highways and byways necessary to get to anywhere in and around Kona.
Heide and Jeffrey were exemplary hosts and provided everything we needed for breakfast waiting when we arrived (fresh fruit, eggs, Kona coffee, and homemade bread); extremely delicious and very much appreciated. They also shared Cupcake, their Jack Russell Terrier with us; his visits were delightful and broke the cuteness scale. Overall, nothing but good memories will be attached to our stay at Koa Cabin. Again, we cannot recommend it highly enough.
One start off for the road up the hill--really not bad but one lane and slow but always new things to see.

Great!
Jeffery and Heidi were wonderful hosts. They were very friendly, welcoming and helpful, and their cabin was even more spacious and nice than it looked online. The property is a bit of a drive up a small road from the highway but the privacy and unique setting make up for it.

It’s paradise
We feel so fortunate to have found this incredibly beautiful and peaceful place to stay. Jeffrey greeted us when we arrived with Heide’s fresh bread and her lillikoi jam, eggs from their chickens and a bountiful fruit basket. Jeffrey showed us around the cabin and highlighted everything we needed to know (including the boogie boards, snorkeling gear, beach gear) available for use The cabin is situated past the main house at the end of the property, in a perfectly private (botanical) park-like setting. At night, the coqui frogs sang us to sleep and we we woke to birdsongs. This is small piece of paradise.
It was by far the best vacation rental experience we've had. The cabin is amazing, warm and comfortable, and has all the amenities one could wish for. It is in a really great location, easy access to any place you might want to visit on the island. And Heide and Jeffrey were wonderful hosts – warm, interesting, generous, caring, and respectful of our privacy. We had such a great time getting to know them. Jeffrey is a serious table tennis player and has quite the setup in his house. He gave us several lessons and was a great coach – patient, encouraging and fun. We had a great time learning to play with Jeffrey.
Heide and Jeffrey were the most wonderful hosts, as were the dogs, Leo and Cupcake, and the cats, Cheesewiz and Cockroach.
We HIGHLY recommend Heide, Jeffrey, their animals, and their beautiful cottage!
We will be back again! Until then, thank you Heide and Jeffrey for making our stay so perfect and for creating such a lovely place.

Private Paradise!
We have visited the Big Island a number of times, and have stayed everywhere from nice hotels to rented condo's, but this vacation rental beats them all. If you travel to the Big Island to experience some of the real Hawaiian life, look no further. Jeff and Heide have created this home away from home where we happily stayed for 10 days. When you first drive up the one-lane road to their property it seems daunting, but keep going and you'll be rewarded with the most serene enclave carved out of the tropical forest. As soon as you arrive, you'll understand all the great reviews. The grounds around the cabin are surrounded by a large pristine lawn of your own, isolated from the road and main house by a couple of small groves of fruit trees- you will have your own PRIVATE paradise. The cabin is traditional single-wall construction, like most of the homes on the island, providing a wonderful place to fall asleep to the sound of rain and the music of the coqui frogs. We loved the views from all the windows- thoughtfully placed to let in the tropical forest around you- like living in a secluded tree-house. The smooth koa wood floors throughout the cabin felt wonderful on our bare feet. It comes equipped with all your needs and includes all the comforts of home. Beach towels and blankets? Boogie boards, fins, and snorkels? Beach chairs, hammocks, umbrellas? They have it all there for you to use. All the beach equipment, appliances, fixtures, furniture, electronics, are very clean and well-maintained. A welcome basket of freshly picked fruit (most from their garden), fresh eggs from their hens, and even a lovely loaf of freshly baked bread and home-made jelly made from tropical fruit gets you started. The refrigerator and pantry had every condiment we needed, and Jeff brought us a sampling of cheeses. We didn't even have to go to the store for supplies for a couple of days! Jeff and Heide are wonderful and thoughtful hosts, and as long-time locals to the Big Island, will fill you in with spots to do your thing- snorkeling, shopping, farmer's marketing, dining- where you won't find the normal touristy items or crowds. We had absolutely no problems during our long stay, and only wish we could have stayed longer. We are already talking about our next visit, and we will certainly choose to stay here again.

WOW!!!
The property was so incredibly beautiful and well taken care of and it had so many amenities. It was really more than what we asked for or ever wanted. Our hosts, Jeffrey and Heide, were incredibly caring and generous, and their communication with us was great. In addition, our famil loved visiting the baby chicks, Horsey & Ducky, and we will especially miss Cupcake and Leo. The whole place really has a lot of life and it is so tranquil. Ideal for a loving couple, or a small family, or someone seeking privacy. The location was also close to snorkeling, surfing, hiking, or quick visits to the Volcano or Hilo. I am sure there is so much that I am forgetting. This was truly a dream!

Highlight of Our 3 Island Ten Day Hawaii Vacation!
Jeffrey & Heidi are the best! They, and their lovely secluded cottage, lived up to all the wonderful 5-star reviews we read about! Would have given them and their cabin an extra 6-star rating if it was possible! We felt genuinely welcome and cared about from the moment we arrived. The setting is very private, and the owners will respect your privacy if you just want to enjoy the perfect romantic hide-away. However, Jeffrey & Heidi are very interesting & wonderful people, and make themselves available for help, visiting and almost anything else that might make your stay more enjoyable. Our 4-day stay during a full moon couldn't have been better! After previously spending 3 days each on Oahu & Maui, we agreed that this beautiful place and its wonderful hosts were definitely the highlight of our 10 day Hawaii vacation!

Our favorite place on the big island to stay!
This is our second time staying here. I cannot say anything bad. Heide and Jeffrey are the sweetest people and will make you feel at home your entire visit. Very relaxing and tranquil. If you are looking for somewhere away from all the foot traffic this is the perfect place. I wish we never had to leave. I’m sure there will be many more visits in the future! Thank you again for your hospitality and I loved all our conversations.

They thought of everything!
I really enjoyed my stay at the Koa Cabin. As another reviewer noted, the cabin was much nicer than the photos show. It is well built, well stocked and clean.
There was fresh loaf (still warm) of bread waiting for me when I arrived, along with fresh jam. There was also a huge platter of fruit and fresh eggs. The kitchen is mostly glass windows with views of the forest and gazebo and sounds of the rain, birds, crickets and coqui frogs.
The appliances were new/newer. Everything worked. The loft/bedroom was cozy and the staircase had motion lights which were great to have at night. The bed was really comfortable.
I spent time in the gazebo in the morning and evening. It was so nice to sit out there and enjoy the greenery and forest sounds.
The market, Longs, bank, food etc. was a short drive away- the location of the cabin is convenient.
The cabin was private, comfortable and I felt safe. I would stay there again.
Thanks Jeffrey and Heide!

Wonderful Stay
What a wonderful cabin in nature! Beautiful area! Jeffrey was great with getting me specific directions. I showed up and Heide baked a loaf of fresh bread and home made jam for me that was delicious. There was also plenty of nice fruit in the kitchen. At night, there were frogs that made some sound, but it didn’t bother me. I wish I had more time to meet with Jeffrey and play table tennis, but will try for next time. Overall, a wonderful experience!

Relaxing country bungalow
Thank you for sharing your piece of island paradise with us. A private rural setting, minutes from premier snorkeling beaches, or art gallery strolls was just the ticket for us. Some days we would wander a bit further to famous swimming beaches, the volcano, or the largest cattle ranch, or perhaps a coffee farm or two. Evening was spent in the gazebo stargazing. The owners are available for suggestions or anything you might need. Did I mention the home made bread and jam, fruit basket, fresh eggs...heaven.

Beautiful Rustic Oasis in Paradise
Jeffrey and Heide are amazing hosts! This is a beautiful cabin in paradise, clean, spacious with everything you need. Close to local beaches and 30 min from Kona. When we arrived Jeffrey and Heide provided us with fresh fruit, eggs and Kona coffee from their properly, amazing touch and greatly appreciated! It was our birthdays and they even gave us a card!
I've been to Hawaii ten times and stayed in both resorts and condo's on all the islands. I would definitely recommend this place to friends and family and would stay here again.
Thank you for an amazing stay in your piece of paradise!

Beautiful cozy cabin
Everything you read about Jeffrey and Heide being amazingly welcoming hosts is true. They make this gem of a place even more special. The entire place is very well-stocked, even the kitchen. The place is so thoughtfully put together, from the construction with beautiful natural light to the furnishings. We found everything super comfortable. Bonus that there are beach supplies to use too. We even loved the coquis at night, they're like a natural sound machine. We would highly recommend to anyone looking for a relaxing get away on the Big Island.

A lovely retreat nestled in the lush countryside yet close to so many amazing sights!
My husband and I just celebrated our 20th anniversary with a trip to the big island and stay at this absolutely lovely little home away from it all. Surrounded by gorgeous tropical greenery, all kinds of fruit and macadamia nut trees to sample from, bird and frog song, cool mountain air and all the comforts of home in this perfect little getaway. We just loved the location, privacy, and how Heide and Jeffrey have thought of every detail to include in their cabin. Heide and Jeffrey not only welcomed us with a plethora of fresh fruit, homemade bread and jam, farm fresh eggs and local coffee but gave us local insight and many fabulous ideas on where to start exploring! We loved our little home base after spending our days out sightseeing, snorkeling, and enjoying fantastic meals in the nearest towns (our favorite was the Strawberry Patch suggested by Heide). Being lulled to sleep by the frog song and cool night air after a night relaxing in the beautiful gazebo right outside was heavenly. Our only regret was that we only booked 4 nights here and moved to Kailua-Kona for the last half of our trip. After staying here we missed it and wished we had skipped a different location when planning! The Sunday market in town, nearby Place of Refuge and Two-Step were hightlights to visit. We found many hidden treasures so close to the cabin, and just loved having a peaceful escape and friendly welcome by Heide and the chickens and dogs every night when we came home. The memory foam bed is super comfy, and the kitchen has everything you need to cook up all the tasty local produce. We found ourselves cooking meals and heading outside to enjoy the lovely scenery and sounds everyday. I can't recommend this lovely cabin highly enough! Staying with Heide and Jeffrey who are so delightful and thoughtful was so nice. We will definitely be back!

Perfect Getaway!
Many thanks, Heide and Jeffrey! We had such a wonderful time at your lovely cabin and were so pleased to find it. We both spend a fair amount of time in hotels while traveling for work so something quiet and off the beaten path was exactly what we were looking for. It was the perfect spot for us. Thank you again for the wonderful fresh bread, fruit, jelly and mac nuts...above and beyond. It was a pleasure to meet you both, as well as your menagerie of fur and feathered friends, and we look forward to sharing your location with others.

Magical cabin
We loved the cabin and its secluded situation in what felt like it’s own garden. The eggs, bread and other provisions left were delicious and most welcome. The cabin was very cosy and comfortable and going to sleep to the accompaniment of the coqui frogs very restful.
Both Jeffrey and Heide were marvellous hosts and we loved the dogs too!

Exactly what we wanted
The Koa cabin is the perfect get-away for those who are seeking relaxation, solitude and beauty. We were lucky to be able to stay in this very comfortable, clean cabin for 8 days. Heidi and Jeffrey have obviously put a lot of love and consideration into this place, making it feel like home. They have thought of everything to make it comfortable. Upon arrival we were greeted with enthusiasm, a big bowl of fruit, delicious loaf of bread with a jar of homemade jam. There is a macadamia nut opener in the kitchen and more nuts on the ground than anyone could eat although I gave it a good try. They answered all our questions, gave us helpful tips about the area and made us feel so welcome.
The lanai was our favorite place to spend our evenings. Every night after one of our adventures, my husband and I looked forward to sitting in the lanai, relaxing and staying warm and dry, even if was raining.
If you are looking for a comfortable, private place to stay, look no further. This is a slice of paradise.
I could write more about the delicious avocados and papayas that are yours for the picking but in order to appreciate the bounties this place offers, consider staying there. It is so worth it!

Your pictures do not do this place justice. Your cabin is beautiful and so are the surroundings. Jeffrey and Heidi are the best hosts too. They provide coffee, fruit, bread and so much more. We loved every minute here!! If you are looking for tranquility this is the place to be. We will definitely stay here again just for the wonderful feel of a home away from home. Don’t change a thing!!

We loved our week at the Koa Cabin. It was spacious but cozy and spotlessly clean. Just a few highlights:
Afternoons sitting on the manicured lawn
The birds (too many to mention but favourites were the pair of saffron finches that visited the picture window every morning and the flock of waxbills that bathed in the eavestrough every afternoon)
The brilliant starry night skies
The cool evening breezes
Being greeted by the dogs and Cheez Whiz the cat
The incredible welcome plate of fresh fruit (and home baked bread with lillikoi jam)
Our hosts, Jeffrey and Heide, who have the hospitality gene in spades
Trips to Hookane beach
If we ever return to the Big Island we would love to stay at the Koa Cabin again.
