1828 Vermont Cottage Feet From The Famous Battenkill River
About this cottage rental
WELCOME TO THE HISTORIC SAMUEL BENEDICT HOMESTEAD Located on the southern bank of the picturesque Battenkill River in West Arlington, Vermont, the historic 3 bedroom cottage, built in 1828, offers the perfect setting for a genuine Vermont getaway. It sleeps up to 5 guests, has a full kitchen, 1.5 bathrooms, and more than its share of rustic charm. Skiing and shopping are nearby, and there is fly fishing, kayaking, swimming and tubing just steps away. Additional amenities include an outdoor patio, modest WiFi, Bluetooth audio, Smart TV, record player, books, games, and more. The cottage has sat at the edge of the Battenkill since the John Quincy Adams administration. Originally part of a much larger family-owned parcel, Samuel Benedict was its builder and original owner. He’s buried just 3 miles away in the St. James Episcopal Cemetery. While many guests enjoy jumping into the river's swimming hole from the single lane bridge, others choose to join local artists to paint landscapes from it. In fact, American artist Ogden Pleissner (1905-1983), in addition to painting western landscapes, images of the New England maritimes, and serving as a WWII war correspondent in the Aleutian Islands, also painted the river scene from the bridge directly in front of the house in 1978. The piece is entitled “The Battenkill at Benedict’s Crossing.” This rustic property has the genuine Vermont flavor to satisfy the solitary purist, but enough creature comforts to make microwave popcorn and stream Netflix (most of the time). We hope to be able to share it with you soon.

This cozy cottage is a true Vermont location with amazing river & mountain views. My daughter said she loved the vibe, it made her feel so comfortable as soon as she walked in. Also, the fresh cinnamon rolls on the dining room table upon our arrival was a fabulous touch.

This is the second time we have stayed at the Benedict house and it reminded us on why we should return to Vermont more often. My daughters enjoyed playing on the property grounds and collecting pine cones. My wife and I loved sitting by the fire as we sipped on our morning coffee or after dinner glass of wine while listening to classic records, which our daughters thought was a hoot.
Our host Sarah was absolutely amazing and extremely thoughtful. The day before our travel she informed us that the wifi would be unfortunately out during our stay, which we found refreshing to be disconnected to the outside world. No emails from work or kids stuck on their tablets. It was prefect. Sarah left us the most delicious lemon cake from a local bakery in Manchester and a gift card to the local general store as a thank you. My family absolutely loves staying at the Benedict house and we would like to return during the summer to enjoy the Battenkill river and summer activities in Vermont. Don't hesitate staying at the Benedict house…your family will love it!

I had an amazing stay at the cottage. The cozy atmosphere and beautiful surroundings made it a perfect getaway. The cottage was clean, well-equipped, and had everything I needed for a comfortable stay. I highly recommend this cottage for a peaceful retreat.

Charming property with breathtaking views! Sarah, Brett and Reese are fantastic hosts. We loved having ample wood to enjoy fires every day. The listing doesn’t do it justice. And the covered bridge and historic home of Norman Rockwell just down the street is a bonus. Would love to visit again💜💜💜

Beautiful property and home set away off the beaten track but easy to ghetto to. The owner’s attention to detail in keeping with the historical antiquity of the home was delightful.
We very much enjoyed our stay. Very comfortable beds. Grounds well kept and lovely. And situated by the Battenkill River as we watched fly fishermen casting for trout was like looking at a Norman Rockwell painting.
Host was most gracious and replied to our inquiries promptly. five stars ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

Just returned from a weekend in Arlington at this charming historical house on the Battenkill river. We had a wedding at the West Mountain Inn ( 2 miles away) on Saturday afternoon. The space was better than the pictures. The setting is quintessential Vermont. The beds were very comfortable, loved the quilts! The kitchen is well-equipped. We didn't need to do much cooking, but appreciated what was there. The host was responsive, nothing was wrong, she just answered my question before we arrived quickly. The air conditioners were welcome on a warm summer weekend.
Would recommend and would come back!
Thanks Sarah!

This is an antique small farmhouse with a lovely location, on a dirt road that parallels the Battenkill. The house was clean and fully equipped including games, books and a collection of old records with a player! A/C is by window units but all worked well. There's an old bridge across the street and Norman Rockwell's studio is just down the road. (An inn, not open to public.). Hildene and the Bennington Museum are great. The best however was tubing the river with Big Big Battenkill--delight on a warm afternoon. Just note that although there are 3 spaces with beds, only one has a door. Call before going anywhere , even in July 23 many schedules remain cut back.

We enjoyed our time in this historic house! We had fun swimming in the river, paddling at the nearby state park, and walking down the beautiful road. We'd recommend Bronwyn for dinner - it was delicious.

We loved our stay at this extremely clean and quaint property. We were in town for an Orvis fly fishing class and the proximity to the river was perfect. Would highly recommend this spot if you are looking for a complete and authentic VT experience.

This is the perfect place to relax and recharge - beautiful scenery, a cottage that has everything you need and great location.
We love sitting in front of the fire, listening to a few tunes and trying to decide what mountain to climb in the morning 😊
Sarah - thank you for being a great host and continuing to keep the cottage true to what makes it so special!

This house was lovely and in such a beautiful (and convenient) area! The kitchen had more than any other vrbo I've stayed at. Beds were great! The backyard pumpkin patch was so appropriate for the fall :-) My only wish would be to have more history on the house.

I love old houses and this one was really cool - many interesting touches, like unusual knick-knacks to look at, and the area can't be beat.

Stayed for four days at the end of August. House is so comfortable and easy to relax in. Kitchen is well-stocked. Shower access is very narrow; a person of size may not be able to enter it. Spent all our time swimming and fishing. Great breakfast available at Rockwell Inn right down the road. Next time would bring our own box fans for the windows (there are window a/c's, but only one small round fan.) Lovely place.

Gardens beautifully maintained; green lawn slopes down to Battenkill River, which offers delicious swimming, wading, jumping in to all ages; home (especially kitchen!) amply furnished; owner responsive and kind.

Gorgeous gardens, easy access to the river, stunning views and an absolutely lovely home made for another wonderful weekend at this very special spot.

Rally neat property in a fantastic location. You can feel the history in the house, enjoy being directly across the street from the river and access to the greater Manchester area. Kitchen is perfectly stocked and the house is very comfy. While we didn't swim in the river we certainly fished the heck out of it (and did see some kids jumping from the bridge to cool off). Sarah was great - easy instructions to get checked in gave us a couple of pointers to make the stay easier and more comfortable. Great stay and a fun weekend.

My wife, 2 kids (4 & 6), and I really enjoyed our stay. The property was beautiful and clean. Lots of charm. We enjoyed the outdoor area that had many hummingbirds visit throughout the day and potted fresh lettuce the owner offered us. The neighbors were friendly and helpful. We had a great time!

Excellent property and stay
This is one of those places that is amazing and you want to keep it a secret, but it's also a place you want to tell everyone about because it is amazing. A lovely little house in a great area.

This is a very special property where the ambience of a charming and compact antique home is enhanced by the mountains rising up beyond the Battenkill River visible from nearly every window. The “two big ladies”—a black and a chestnut cow grazing and lounging in the grass across the street complete the quintessential pastoral Vermont view.
Though I live in a similar landscape (an hour and a half south in the beautiful Berkshires), I really didn’t want to leave!
So looking forward to returning for a longer stay!

Make sure you know the lockbox code before you arrive, as you'll lose service.
We enjoyed our week getaway and stayed with 4 adults and one toddler. There is no phone service but the internet works pretty well so we were able to work some of the week and could still do video calls.
The wood fireplace makes it cozy in the old house, we enjoyed it everyday. There was wood available to use too.
The 2nd and 3rd beds are small. Only the king bed has a private room, the 2nd is in a loft and 3rd is walking through to the kitchen. The house, being older, has exposed heating pipes. We had to be extra cautious with a little one.
The house is near Manchester and close enough to Bromley and Stratton Mountains which we enjoyed.
People seemed to fly down the road so be cautious if walking. Our son loved the cows outside the window looking at the neighbors field and the horses down the road.
Great spot!

We have not returned to Vermont in over 10 years but this beautiful Benedict House has me wondering why we haven’t. The pictures provided by Sarah are very good but the house is so much more. The owners have paid so much attention to detail that the house is just a cozy gem. In addition, the location can not be beat. The house is located on a quiet street and you have front row seats to view the Battenkill River and the beautiful skyline of mountains.
Inside the house is just as charming as the outside. The fireplace/living room area was the place to be as we played Connect Four in-front of the fire. The kitchen has everything you need if you plan on cooking or baking. The upstairs has two rooms and a half bathroom with beds that makes you want to stay in bed for hours!
My girls, 5 & 7, were just ecstatic that they were able to play outside in the snow and even do a little bit of sledding. Do not look any further in booking your stay, Sarah has the most charming place in Arlington.
