This three-bedroom Mendocino vacation rental, called Chanticleer, is a beautiful artist's retreat. There are two wrap-around decks overlooking the ocean, a vintage cone fireplace, original artwork adorning the walls, and a garden and private viewing deck nestled amongst the wooded glades.
Chanticleer is 45 miles from hiking and picnicking along 45 redwood-coved acres at Admiral Standley State Park Recreation Area. You'll be 41 miles from wine tasting at Elke Vineyards, and 37 miles from B. Ryan Animal Preserve. Russian Gulch State Park and Point Cabrillo are both about a mile away.
The stunning asymmetrical exterior of the home is surrounded by ferns and natural vegetation. Chanticleer has three levels and two separate wrap-around decks providing magnificent views over a wooded glade to a whitewater view of the Pacific Ocean. The upper level offers a bathroom, two guest rooms with queen-sized beds, and an extra sleeping space with a futon that can fold into a double bed. Each room is cozy and inviting with vintage wood paneling, and eccentric collections of artwork, seashells and decor.
The middle level of the home offers floor to ceiling windows in the posh, open-concept living room. Dive into your favorite crossword on the leather loveseat or sit down to a cup of coffee in one of two leather armchairs. An ornate red and blue rug and modern floor lamps tie the room together, while Redwood paneling makes the space feel rustic and charmingly vintage.
A cone fireplace reminiscent of the 1970s and a rack of wood punctuate the living room, inviting guests to curl up with a blanket by the fire. A wrap-around deck just off the living room offers patio chairs, making it the perfect spot for taking in the fresh sea air. When you aren't taking in the views, watch satellite TV, or pop in a DVD or VHS movie at the media center. Just off the living room is a small den with built-in bookshelves and a CD and cassette player.
The dining room is adjacent to the living room. A farm-style dining table and built in bench for six will allow you and your guests to break bread together. Quaint muffin tins and original artwork adorn the dining room shelves, and the fully-stocked kitchen offers a dishwasher, refrigerator, oven, stove, and toaster. This home also features a private washer and dryer for your convenience.
Downstairs is the master suite complete with a private bathroom, queen-sized bed, and private sitting room with a built-in desk, TV and sofa. The master suite also has a romantic private deck for midnight toasts of champagne and star gazing.
The 2,100-square-foot home is on one acre, and has room for seven guests. The outside deck leads to manicured gardens and a viewing deck up a walkway from the house, making it a favorite spot to enjoy the sunsets and watch the woodpeckers. WiFi access means you can stay alert and plugged in! And don't forget to bring your furry friends: There is a small nightly fee if you want to bring dogs.
For a day trip, drive five minutes to Mendocino and visit the Sea Glass Museum, featuring hand-crafted jewelry made from local beach glass. Order a plate of comfort food at Lumberjack's Restaurant, or take the self-guided discovery trail through untouched redwood groves at Hendy Woods State Park.
No matter how you spend your visit, this Mendocino vacation home is the perfect artist's retreat to slow down and get inspired by the beauty of nature, with all the comforts of home.
*Please note that this home's two steep staircases and the stand-alone fireplace are not well-suited for small children. Plan accordingly. Thank you!

The pet fee is per stay and ranges between $150 and $200, depending on the bedroom count, and will apply for each additional dog.

The ocean view, quiet, forest setting, proximity to town.

Wonderful cabin. Great location. Peaceful. Highly recommended.

Charming 1960’s architecture with various degrees of upgrades but all in working order an location is great, close to Mendo town and several state parks
4.3
We booked this home for a family vacation and it did not disappoint. The view was amazing, the property was clean and quiet. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would definitely come back again.
4.3
The location and view were perfect for hikes, beaches and few shopping
4.3
We stayed the weekend for my husbands birthday and we absolutely loved the house and its location!
4.3
This lovely ocean view property was very close to both Fort Bragg ca and the town of Mendocino.
The listing talks about steep stairs to all bedrooms- if you are mobility challenged may not be for you. We left our suitcases down stairs and only used upstairs for sleeping. The whole place gives off a cabin vibe which I loved. If you are looking for something fancy not for you. The art work through out is amazing and was fun to look at—overall good value for the price
4.3
Beautiful views. Comfortable and welcoming home with appealing artwork throughout. Older cabin style house which shows its age and would benefit from some minor upgrades.
4.3
Overall, cabin was nice. Negatives: couches were small, enough for 2 people sitting upright with legs straight in front. Most furnishings looked like they came from a garage sale. Kitchen table at bench on one side necessitated by small space, but uncomfortible for older adults getting in and out. 3 levels. 2 bedrooms very small. Walls were more like thin partitions to create bedrooms. Made it easy to communicate easily with anyone anywhere in the house from any room. TV small and viewable only from 4 seats.
Small counter top space. No garbage disposal. Bedroom (tube) TV had built in VCR player. Some people may need to look up what is a VCR player. No smart TV, but had HDMI connection for laptop. Positives: Clean. Excellent location- quiet neighborhood, nice view of ocean from living room and one bedroom. 2 miles from a nice beach. Dog friendly but no yard to play fetch. We probably won't return there, but I can see that it may be good fit for many. Also internet streamed well.

We loved it here! Great location and the house was perfect for the six of us who stayed there. Lots of space, great fireplace, great view of the ocean. An older place, but so full of character. We had a great time!
4.3
Pros: gorgeous neighborhood, great views, lovely garden.
Cons: steep narrow driveway. VERY Hard to get out (can't make a U-turn! Very scary. Big window in kitchen doesn't close or lock. No screens on the windows (we could not get rid of 3 pesky flies for 3 days). Steep stair case to get to the bedrooms upstairs. Steep stair case to get to the master bedroom below (this was hard on our bad knees). Back door to deck from living room does not close or lock (single pane, big cracks in frame). Anybody could have come in from the front or back (no need for a key)! No large bowls (for salad or pasta), not enough mugs, plates chipped. Bed not that comfortable. But, it was a BEAUTIFUL area & view.

House was as described in all the other reviews. The only other thing i would suggest is to bring your own hair dryer as there were none in the bathrooms. Any questions or comments were returned in a short time.
4.3
The view from the balcony was gorgeous. The yard was charming and well maintained.

This house was not quite as updated as the pictures show, but that didn’t stop us from enjoying every minute. We all slept very well and had plenty of pillows and blankets. It got warm during the day and cool at night, but opening windows and then using the portable heaters at night made it perfect. We had everything we needed except for a washer , which was broken at the time. I understand a new one is ordered. Thanks for a great stay!!
4.3
Location! Great view. Quiet neighborhood. Quail, turkey’s, deer

We booked this property so we could do laundry midway through our travels. Arrived to find washing machine broken and according to property management it had been broken for some time , ceiling fan - broken, dining room chair- broken leg. Couch-broken, end table broken. We ended up spending most of one of our "sightseeing " days and money in a laundromat watching the drier spin! Beautiful and peaceful setting but poorly managed and maintained. We did not come with unrealistic expectations we just expected basic things to work.

If you are looking for a tranquil, beautiful house with ocean views, this is your place. The house is close to parks, town but still in a quiet location with beautiful ocean views. My wife and me brought the whole family and the house was big enough for all of us. I cannot recommend this house enough. I can hardly wait for my next vacation in Mendocino!
4.3
When we entered the house it was unswept, cobwebs on the baseboards, the entire house smelt of fish, the dishes all had a greasy film and all the cabinets had crumbs in them. The oven mits were filthy with dried food still on them! The house itself was ok but there was an overall feeling of unwelcomeness.
4.3
animal hair on furniture and beds, up stair sink plugged with hair wouldn't drain until drain access pulled out, WIFI terrible and would only allow limited access, sofa in front room broken armrest, rubber brick tiles around firepit loose and came out of place, upstairs bedroom floorboard separated causing a tripping hazard chair in front of tv is not stable and wobbles, metal floor trim in front of tv separated and catches your foot as you walk by
4.3
The biggest frustration was how long it took for Vacasa to get back to us. 5 hours the first time, when we couldn't find how to heat the house and were cold, and 8 hours the second time when we were requesting a later checkout.
Other deficiencies included:
No wine glasses, no serving bowls
Lighting upstairs poor
Light at lower level bathroom sink poor lighting
No extra blankets upstairs
Otherwise the place was adequate.

We absolutely love this house. Have stayed here 4 times. The last 2 times for 10 and 8 days taking advantage of the free day. It has become our home away from home we love the gorgeous views, the wood interior, the eclectic artwork and the perfect location. All of which made us willing to disregard the two burners that didn't work on the electric stove, the toaster that burned the toast, the cable that didn't work (granted they did give us a credit for no cable) and all the frying pans were not usable. On our last day this year when I was looking on line to book for next year saw that the price is almost double and there is no longer a free day after a 7 day stay. We can't afford the price and can't justify it with the things wrong. So sad to not be returning, we truely love this house, will miss it!

Our group loved the home, it was in a quiet location, with gorgeous views. The property was located out of town with good proximity to our favorite places. The major problem was the comfort of the furnishings. The furniture is very uncomfortable. After long days of adventure, there was no comfy sitting option. The couches are small, shallow and unwelcoming. The beds upstairs were just as bad. The dining chairs were the most comfortable of all the chairs and couches. The downstairs suite was lovely but reserved for our older parents, so while they slept well, and left rested, the rest of us left feeling terrible. I am not trying to be disrespectful of the owners or the property, but we will never go back to this house simply because we could not get comfortable on any of the furniture.
4.3
We had a great time in Mendocino. Overall, a wonderful house and a great set up for our family. My husband and I and the kids were upstairs, and my parents stayed in the basement suite, with a common living area in between. Perfect! Heater worked well, unlimited firewood. Great view! We were happy and cozy our entire time.
4.3
The water pump kept us up all night every 30 seconds to three minutes the entire time we stayed. All communication from your organization has dropped off. I cannot recommend this house we did not get any rest. It was a vacation from hell with the noise from the water pump cycling up on continuously day and night. I’d let you know about this and no one is getting back to me.
4.3
Very uncomfortable furniture, one of the burners on the stove top didn't work, the cable that they said came with the rental didn't work. I will not be booking this place again!!
4.3
A little difficult to get exact directions, but eventually made it in. Place is a bit smaller than what photos would indicate. However, overall decent experience and good value for the money.
4.3
We have stayed here before. This time none of our family members could join us, so we had the house to ourselves. The bottom floor is the newest and nicest. Negatives:The rest of the house is much older, but it has a Mendocino vibe. You can hear every sound on every floor, no matter which level you are on, so if you are staying with family or friends that are not on the same schedule, it is pretty uncomfortable. There are no window coverings downstairs. The kitchen is small and the furniture in the living room is not comfortable to hang out in. Parking in the driveway is difficult if you have a large truck. Positives: There are two large decks and great views from the upper deck. The neighborhood is beautiful and you can walk out to a cliff overlooking the ocean.
4.3
This was a great setting with a very nice view of the ocean. Quite easy to get to as well. One thing the owner may not be aware of is that the reserve tank for the water pump is broken so the pump was running almost constantly if one runs water such as flushing a toilet or taking a shower.
It is a very quaint house with lots of room and comfortable beds. We had a great time.

Re: Property ID 655394 (06/04/22-06/10/2022)
Overall, we enjoyed our stay. The property was quiet and isolated, in a well-tended neighborhood. The interior was comfortable and I enjoyed the many pictures and curios throughout. However, by day two one toilet was plugged up. I found a plunger and fixed it on several occasions. A seat on the dinning table broke when I sat on it. Fortunately, I was not hurt but i noticed that several other chairs were questionable so we set them aside. The small sofas felt weak we limited them to our kids. In addition, the deck door was stuck and difficult to open and or close so accessibility was limited. My wife notified from a maintenance person from Vacasa. I was informed that we would be contacted by the handyman. Mike the handyman did not show up until the day before our departure. He validated our issues and was aware of these issues to be repaired.

I have an extremely difficult time doing nice things for myself. Finally decided to book this place at the urging of several friends, and it couldn’t have come at a better time. This place was everything my partner and I needed: beautiful, quiet, and out of reach from the outside world. I only wish we could have stayed longer. Neither of us had phone service and we never wanted to come back, it was perfect.
Note: this house is funky. It’s funky in a great way, but just know that it’s not soundproof in the slightest. Any footsteps upstairs can be heard down on the main level, though I’m not sure about the lower level. It’s not far at all from Ft Bragg (and I’m sure Mendocino but we didn’t venture that direction), but know that these coastal towns often close early so plan ahead when it comes to food and beverage needs if you’re getting in a bit late.
TLDR: Do yourself a kindness. Refresh your spirit. Book the place. Even if it’s not this one, just do it. I wish a review had told me that, so I’ll pay it forward. Waking up to a view of the ocean and clean air does something for the body that you just can’t get anywhere else.

We had a great weekend stay at Chanticleer. While the pictures do make it look bigger the place was still Perfectly cozy for our family of 5, our doggo, and my sister and her husband.
The indoor fireplace is amazing and kept us toasty as it was pretty cold once the sun went down. Speaking of the sun I hope you get clear days as the views are amazing and we had some of the best sunsets during our stay.
Our only rant was the pullout bed/couch in the downstairs den. No way anyone could sleep on that.

This home is in a very nice location and has a lot of potential. We had a four night stay. There is definitely need for improvement.
The furnisher is extremely uncomfortable. We actually moved in the outside chairs and used pillows for comfort.
The house does get cold and there were not enough blankets on the beds or available on the house.
The kitchen is not well stocked. If these area are rectified we would be willing to stay here again.
The lighting is terrible. When lamps are turned on they shine in your eyes. Upgrades to this property are in order.
