About this cottage rental
The Fish House built in 2009, is an architect designed, waterfront carriage house in mid-coast Maine, an hour and a half north of Portland. We have easy access to much of the state and are only 9 miles from Rockland, with it's award-winning restaurants, museums and the sightseeing opportunities nearby. Camden and it's treasures are just a 15 minute ride beyond Rockland. Our property is part of a private homeowners association with tennis courts, deep-water dock and miles of safe gravel roads and hiking trails, all available to residents and guests. There is only one house barely visible from ours and nature abounds with a variety of wildlife including bald eagles, great blue herons, egrets, osprey, foxes and seals. Each summer we have seals playing for several weeks just off our property! We are fortunate to have 3 1/2 acres of fir and spruce trees, as well as blueberry, vegetable and flowering gardens. Being sited next to a conservation area on one side, with 350 feet of our own shorefront on two sides, we feel like we live in paradise - and we welcome you to join us!
From the little covered patio, the Fish House opens to an inviting entryway, which leads to a flight of stairs and the main living space. Designed for two adults to spend weeks at a time, you will be greeted by a wall of windows overlooking much of the property, Horn Barn Cove and Muscongus Bay just beyond. There is a separate, cozy bedroom with large closets and storage, a full bathroom with gleaming white tub and luxury bed and bath linens. With comfortable, high-end furniture our guests can sit and relax, prepare a meal in the well-equipped kitchen and dine indoors - or outside at the picnic table. Our shorefront is a short walk through our yard and down a little path to the granite-lined coast where you can wade and look for treasures or just sit, relax and listen to the water lap against the rocks. For swimming and kayaking, our association dock with kayak ramp is just at the end of the street. There are miles of safe roads on which to bike, both in our immediate area and throughout the mid coast. For a real treat, upon return from your adventures you can make use of our heated, outdoor shower!
Whether you’re looking for total peace and quiet or prefer an active vacation, there are lots of options in our area. While some of our guests have come and never left the property for days at a time, Rockland and Camden are just 9 and 18 miles away respectively. Both have supermarkets, specialty food stores and the big box options just ten minutes away is the well-stocked, old-school market. Ten minutes away is a lobster pound, where you can purchase lobsters fresh caught that day and there are numerous casual seafood restaurants nearby. This area is also home to several of the highest ranked restaurants in the Northeast. Numerous other notable attractions include the well-known Farnsworth Art Museum, the Olsen House depicted in one of Andrew Wyeth’s most famous paintings and the breathtaking views from the top of Mr. Battie in Camden. To the north, Acadia National Park in Bar Harbor can be a day trip adventure. From Portland, with its vibrant restaurant and arts scene, numerous other scenic coastal towns are fun to explore. We keep an updated collection of various activities and day excursions and encourage our guests to add to it.
Maine is known for the quality of light here, which affords unbelievable sunsets... and the lack of ambient light in this area yields a night sky with stars and planets so brightly visible that the night sky, alone, is worth the trip. Mid- coast Maine has long been home to – or a destination for - artists and writers for many decades and the scenery is truly inspirational. Once we experienced the coast of Maine, we knew this area is special and all of our guests have agreed. Please feel free to contact us for additional information...

Quick trip to celebrate husbands 50th. Hosts were great--this is a guest house above their garage so they were on site to greet. Great location 20-40 min to several port towns with restaurants and shops.

We had a wonderful stay in Maine. We've vacationed in Maine several times and this, by far, was the best. Quiet and peaceful and a wonderful view of the water. The hosts were so welcoming, great to meet and so helpful with places to go. The apartment on the second floor was beautiful and had all the amenities that we wanted and needed.
There were windows all around the apartment to be able to see the woods and the water. One day we even saw wild turkeys with chicks in the yard. No A/C, but with the windows open there were pleasant breezes to keep cool.
Rockland was only about 30 minutes away with very nice restaurants, museum, shops and pier for a trip on a schooner. Camden, which is also very nice, was only about 15 minutes further. There were also restaurants in the country that offered top-notch dining. And don't forget the lobster shack eating.
We stayed several weeks so we took washing to a place in Rockland and picked it up the next day.
The kitchen also let us prepare our own meals when we wanted to do our own cooking.
We are already trying to plan a return visit in the future.

The property is one of the best we have stayed in. It’s a private location with the water a short walk away. When you get to the water there a a couple of Adirondack chairs for the guests. We spend some delightful afternoons with our tea, our books and the wonderful views. There was a seal one day, an eagle another and lots of ducks. Very quiet and serene.

Chris and Bill were fine hosts and we enjoyed our stay. The apartment is modern and is above the garage. Chris gave excellent advice about sights to visit in the area.

Chis and Bill’s Fish House is a perfect place for a ‘get away from it all in luxury’ vacation. It is located on a quiet cove where we watched the shorebirds fish and the tide ebb and flow.
The apartment is immaculate and had everything we needed and nothing we didn’t. Chris is very responsive to any questions and is close to hand. It is a beautiful property and we hope to be back.

We enjoyed every aspect of the Fish House--the setting, the accommodations, the association dock, kayaking adventures, hiking, the ability to conveniently explore Maine's mid-coast region, and most notably, the graciousness of our hosts. Chris was incredible and made the experience even better with her warm and welcoming approach. The Fish House is truly a gem and we are looking forward to returning. Thank you!

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at The Fish House! Bill and Chris were terrific hosts and the property is amazing! It’s quiet and the views are out of this world! It is well located so you can take day trips to wherever you want to go. It’s close to Rockland and Camden and anything else you’d want to do. I recommend this property without hesitation.

This is an amazing spot - the perfect location in mid coast Maine! The carriage house is very clean and cozy, well stocked kitchen, with beautiful views of the water. The dock is a few minutes walk away in a very quiet, private development. The hosts were incredibly warm and helpful, really lovely people. We rented a kayak that we stored at the dock and saw seals and a bald eagle. The carriage house has great windows and good air flow so nights were cool for great sleeping. I can’t recommend this place enough!

We have traveled a lot and stayed in many rentals over decades. This lovely carriage house, on the water, was everything we hoped for and more; peaceful, super comfortable and in a like-new condition with every detail thought of and lovingly maintained. We were also lucky enough to meet our hosts, who supplied us with ample tips on where to eat, visit and so forth. There are so many places to visit--but we enjoyed visiting Rockland and dining at the Long Grain restaurant and also Suzuki Sushi Bar (both not to be missed)--especially after visiting the Farnsworth Museum--which is always worth a visit. We also toured the nearby Olson House--the inspiration and subject of the famous Christina's World piece, in addition to over 300 paintings and drawings--some of which can be seen at the Farnsworth.
One day we drove to Damariscotta for a succulent lunch of fresh oysters--delicious! Later that day, we enjoyed fresh Italian pastries in Bath--also a neat harbor town. We regret not having enough time to enjoy walking around the carriage house to explore the seaside, play tennis or swim but hope to return and make that a priority the next time. Lovely place and hosts--hard to imagine a better spot!

Gorgeous and cozy Maine apartment overlooking trees and water, the photos are true to rental. Location is private and the hosts, Bill and Chris, are lovely and help out in every way (we lost our key!). It's an easy and scenic drive to the larger towns, cities, for the restaurants and shops. We loved area hiking trails and barn antiques best. And we enjoyed getting to know our hosts who have created a beautiful and scenic home, with this charming apartment for travelers. Best, Maria & Rich

We had the very best experience at Chris's property that one could possibly have on a getaway. She's an attentive, caring, present host and the property is breathtakingly beautiful inside and outside. We felt wonderfully at home and grateful to have found such a special place for time away together in Maine. Highly recommend!

The Fish House is, as described, cozy, neat and comfortable with spectacular views. The hosts, Chris and Bill, are very helpful and friendly, and I love their dog. We enjoyed the quiet and beauty of the location, and also the relatively easy drive to Rockland and Camden, and Damariscotta. There are lovely walks in the neighborhood and at least two nature preserves with walking trails within a short drive from the house. I hoped to see an eagle and did on our second day. Our only complaint is that the bed is quite firm (certainly better than being too soft), but we'll bring a mattress topper next time and that should take care of the problem.

The Fish House was a great central location to be able to travel south to Portland and as far north as Acadia. We really enjoyed the quiet and more removed neighborhood, and you can't beat the views from the huge windows in the mornings. The house is the perfect size for a couple's getaway.

The Fish House is really lovely. The perfect size for 2 with an unbeatable view. Meticulously clean, a well equipped kitchen, comfortable furnishings, very comfortable bed. The hosts are friendly and accommodating without being intrusive. The neighborhood features quiet streets for walking and a private dock for swimming and kayaking. There's a very serviceable general store 10 minutes away in Friendship that happens to be across the street from a funky but fabulous lobster and seafood place. And of course Rockland is only half an hour away. All in all this was an ideal place for the 2 of us to enjoy a perfectly relaxing week in Mid-Coast Maine.

The rental apartment above the owner's garage is very clean and new, but fairly small and compact. A short walk across the owner's lawn takes you to a scenic cove. Water access not great though. Cushing is not the most convenient location and there aren't too many local amenities. This rental is within a private HOA that seems quite "posh" and also boring. It was a fairly long drive from Rte 1 in Thomaston with not much to offer other than quiet. The photos advertised an outdoor shower that was not made available to us. It would also be a plus if the owners made kayaks available for use. Nicely furnished and comfortable bed and bath, but a fairly small space - good for single or couple. I would not choose to return to this property. Nice enough, but not enough nearby to engage us for one week in early August.

The Fish House is exactly as described. Beautiful craftsmanship can be found throughout. It is perfect for a couples getaway. The views are spectacular. Chris and Bill have put there heart and soul into this property and openly share it with thier guests. If you love the Midcoast area you are near all the popular towns, however if you just want to relax and enjoy the property you could do that too. My husband kayaked several mornings and saw eagles and osprey fishing nearby. Tilly, the goldendoodle, was the perfect welcoming committee. Thank you Chris and Bill for being great hosts. We will be back.

Serene setting to recharge
The Fish House was a perfect serene location to get away for a few days with my husband. The workmanship in the carriage house is top notch, the setting was relaxing, and the host very accommodating and easy to communicate with. We would definitely stay here again and recommend the Fish House to anyone looking for a peaceful getaway.

Nestled in a Postcard
If you are looking for a cozy getaway in an intimate carriage house nestled within a waterfront postcard, you’ve found it. My husband and I came for our honeymoon and wanted to be immersed in Maine and it’s fall sights. We got just that and more. This location is perfect if you are looking to stay mainly on the property (it has a fully equipped kitchen - complete with a lobster pot and a pound nearby to cook your own if that’s on your list! And a fire place for chilly nights), take a hop over to explore the nearby towns of Camden and Rockport, or it is an easy beautiful drive away from Bar Harbor and Acadia if you want to make that a day trip!
Unsure of what to do and where to eat? Chris has a list of the best restaurants nearby (we tried many of them so can confirm her ratings!!) which makes planning once you are there a breeze. We came with no plans and had the whole trip planned after our first conversation with Chris! Bonus!
To cap off a perfect location, Chris and Bill could not have been more wonderful. You can tell they love Maine, love their home, and truly love sharing the Fish House. They were so welcoming I felt as if we were friends right off the bat.
My husband and I shared some incredible memories at the Fish House and can not recommend this special place highly enough. We look forward to coming back.

Peace and tranquility
Beautiful setting. Quiet. Great accommodation. The Fish house was all we hoped for and more. Lots to do in the area. Chris, Bill and Tilley were great hosts, with Tilley being a wonderful golden doodle, and very friendly to boot. Had a great time.

Lives up to the stellar review
We have nothing to add to the many very positive reviews already posted. Quiet, relaxing, deeply refreshing. We returned to the city thoroughly rejuvenated after a mid-September week in the Maine mid-coast.

We love mid-coast Maine and our stay at the Fish House in Cushing Maine was amazing!
Everything was fantastic! The location and views of the water from the cottage were amazing. We enjoyed kayaking in the cove, relaxing by the waters edge, seeing resident seals pop up out of the water to greet us. So much do to in the area- enjoyed lobstah rolls at McLoons, the Farnsworth museum in Rockland and antiquing up the coast to Camden. Chris and Bill were a pleasure and loved their dog Tilly! We hope to return for a future visit.

The property was absolutely beautiful, and the fish house was spotlessly clean. We loved the decor inside. Chris was extremely helpful and told us all the best things to do, see, and eat in the area. We would go out of our way to stay there again.

Perfect getaway
We were looking for a quiet place to stay with a water view, and this property was just lovely. You couldn't hear a single car (!), the relatively recent build meant it had a gorgeous picture window over the cove, and it was a short walk to adirondack chairs right on the water. The property owners were super friendly and helpful. Because of the peace and quiet it's a bit of a drive to anywhere you might want to go (we joked that basically everything was a half-hour drive), but within 30-45min we could do it all: eat amazing food (mostly taken out and eating on nearby picnic tables), visit our favorite wine maker (Oyster River!), go on incredible hikes in the Camden Hills, take a ferry with our bikes to North Haven Island, take a nature boat trip to see puffins and seals... We definitely recommend this property, the owners, and the location!

A lovely place to relax
The view from the Fish House takes in lovingly cared for gardens and lawn out to the end of the inlet. We enjoyed time each day in the chairs provided by the shoreline watching the birds and the tides. The hosts were most welcoming and considerate.

Wonderful place to stay
I found the Fish House to be a wonderfully relaxing place to stay. Chris and Bill made sure I had everything I needed and gave me great suggestions of things to see in the neighborhood. The accommodations were clean and thoughtfully decorated. If you are looking for a place that is quiet and immersed in nature look no further.

Looking for life in the fast lane? Don't come here.
The neighborhood: You won't see the neighbors. Just your gracious hosts. You are tucked away in the woods, with a peaceful view of a relatively unused bay. The apartment: Beautiful. That term "bay window." This is where it was coined. Tastefully decorated. Well constructed. Nicely finished, wide board, wood floor and natural wood trim. Furnished with an extra-comfortable bed, a well-equipped kitchen, and thick towels. Location: Down a just-repaved country road, around the corner from the field where Andrew Wyeth set Christina's World. But you'll have to go to MoMA to see the painting. You may end up not using the apartment's kitchen a whole lot. There are a bevvy of great places to eat in the area. In short - your hosts are willing to share a really relaxing place in a picturesque setting. It's a rare thing.
