Excellent location in the heart of Lamu town. I was given the choice of the available rooms. I loved the decor. Beautiful view of the sunrise from the terrace. Breakfast was so tasty. Muhammed also arranged a brilliant sunset boat trip for me for a great price.
I was awoken at 04.50 each morning with the noise from the nearby Mosque, but it was to be expected.

AMU house is a beautiful old and carefully restaured historical house. And the terrace on the roof top is perfect for relaxing and reading. The right place when you prefer the authentic life of Lamu to the touristy places of Shela.
Thank you, Mary and Hussein for your hospitality, for your time, for organizing a stunning sailing trip, and for our unforgettable walk on Manda Island.
Nothing to mention

Everything was fantastic at Amu House from the moment we arrived we were treated like family & that continued for the duration of our stay including sharing dinner with Mary and Hussian and the rest of the wonderful family, New Year's Day watching the Dow race together on our own private boat & many enjoyable conversations over breakfast
Breakfast was an absolute treat with the banana pancakes being the best I've ever tasted so much so that we ended up having double portions of them and the apple French toast every day along with freshly squeezed juice from local fruits and as much spcied chia tea as we could drink
On the first night we stayed I didn't sleep very well as the mattress was too soft for my back, as soon as I mentioned it to Mary she immediately bought a new mattress so that I would be comfortable & I slept like a baby for the duration of our stay
There's so many more great things I could say about Amu House including the fact that its great value for money but it's best that you just try it for yourself, you won't be disappointed 😊
That we couldn't stay longer 🥺

The location is great, you get to appreciate the old town

Amu house is stunning, really it’s one of the most beautiful places I’ve stayed in and was quite sad when the time came to leave. It has beautiful architecture and furniture, very clean with really friendly owners and staff. There are lots of chill out spaces in the communal areas and very centrally located.
Nothing

Staff were incredible, always on hand to help with organising boat trips, transfers down to Shela (nearby more touristy area at south of Lamu) and flexible for breakfast timings.
Hot tap in our shower didn't work, water pressure was very soft. Although this didn't matter too much given how hot the weather was - cold showers weren't too bad!

Location = superb. Swahili breakfast = more than superb. Service = fantastic! Architecture = exactly what we were looking for.. that wonderful, authentic, age-old Swahili architecture... like you've travelled back in time :)
Nothing to dislike. It was exactly as expected.

The size of the rooms, the aesthetic.
The breakfast options

Very central and easy to get boats to other parts of the island and to the airport.
The coffee at breakfast but I am quite particular about my coffee.

Amu House has been beautifully renovated to a very high standard. The property has been restored with care and attention to detail in keeping with the original features and architecture. The wall carvings are exquiste and the minimalist decor complementary. You have access to a charming rooftop terrace and our room had its own private little terrace which was an added bonus, our room was also a good size. From the moment you step into the house, after a long day of enjoying what Lamu has to offer, it is like time stands still and it is a sanctuary away from the hustle and bustle. We opted to have the breakfast every day out of convenience, there was enough variety and quantity to make it good value. The whole team at Amu House (Alex, Mohamed and Nilsy) were great, they were on hand for anything you needed, we found them to be approachable, friendly and attentative. The host and owner (Mary) cares deeply about the community, environment and sustainability and helpfully provides water for guests so that you don't need to buy plastic bottles of water, which helps you to be responsible about the impact you have on this UNESCO World Heritage site. We loved our stay and hope to return.

We like the 'swahilli' experience in the old town. The house was lovely. They did help us a lot with infant needs on boiling water for bottles etc.
This has nothing to do with the house but our own family needs/ challenge. We were travelling with an infant of 15months.Because of the steps and heights we never could relax as it was dangerous to let him out of our sight because he can walk and climb. So our choice of this house causes us problems
We would have liked hot water for showering.
We would have like air condition although the the swahilli experience probably would not have been authentic

rooms with open air seating at the entry of each.

Great breakfasts and wonderful staff. Mary will
make sure you experience the best of Lamu.
Thank you Mary.

Location, value, staff
4.3
Good location, decent room, and budget friendly.
Rooms are quiet, you can easily sleep till noon.
Breakfast was not served at the premises during my stay. Travelling at low peak season.
4.3
No hot water and restaurant or food
Not even coffee or ways to get one
4.3
Great location, authentic place to live and helpful staff.
No hot water available and I was told there were breakfast facilities but that was not the case.

Captured Lamu’s laid back vibe perfectly
There are so many little things that could be done to make the stay even more comfortable. The communal kitchen was not nice, there could be tea and coffee and other basics in the reception area and kitchen. The rooms were a little bare and the top deck would be even better if there was a fridge or kettle and clean water so relaxing on the swinging chair didn’t require a trip up and down the house.
But, that said, I was happy and would have stayed longer

It just needed warm water and a few soft furnishings and the place would be lovely. Unfortunately it felt rather empty and the shower pressure and lack of hot water ruined the shower experience. Could be very nice with a bit more in the way of soft furnishings and a bit more life downstairs - maybe henna painting or massage or books or something
As above

I loved everything!
Cold shower

I loved that we had the entire place to ourselves. Felt safe and secure. Julius is very helpful. Mohammed was exceptionally kind. Spacious and clean. Lots of places to recline and relax.
That we had to go home eventually and that we only found out on the last day about a woman who does massage downstairs

Amu house is a traditional Swahili house. It is very beautiful, rooms are lovely, great rooftop view and super quiet (we never heard the call to prayer). They have someone meet you at the airport and will take you across by boat (200 KSH pp) which is helpful. Julius (on reception) and friendly and helpful and polite. we enjoyed our stay :)
Amu house is a great base for exploring Lamu Town. There is no hot water (this is common in Lamu however).
I would highly recommend Amu House!

The breakfast was fine, and I was happy to be provided with a gluten free option. The fruits platter was especially quite refreshing. For the children, the mahamri was especially welcome.
I would have loved to have beans/mbaazi every day, but I appreciate that this was not always possible. Also, maybe some more choices for the children.
4.3
-Centrally located
-Very responsive owner (Mary) esp. to my inquiries before our stay
-Somebody took the tonic water we placed in the common fridge
-We were not informed of the other fees such as for the boat ride going to the property and for the pick-up of the tour (I was informed that there would be 2 pick-up locations but we had to get a boat by ourselves to a resort in the Shela to meet our tour guide

Lovely house and kindest owner
Mama mary was a pleasure to spend time with, very accommodating
She was most helpful to us when planning how we would spend our days and ....

These are very beautifully renovated authentic premises. The rooms were basic and clean as was the shower and a great location in the centre of the town very close to boats for beaches and airport. Unfortunately my friend and I were bitten by what was possibly some sort of insects that may be in the mattresses. We didn't have an opportunity to feed this back to the proprietor as I'm sure he would have taken this on board. The breakfast was very nice and Harrison who served us was extremely efficient and friendly.
Not very comfortable mattresses but loved the typical style of the bed
4.3
I loved the roof terrace where I could watch the morning sunrise, ease into the day relaxing on the baraza, and utilising the washing facilities.
Breakfast was always a feast: beginning with a selection of fruit and fresh filter coffee and a main dish of your choice. A wonderful and filling way to start the day.
Friendly and attentive staff
I never heard the calls to pray from Amu House
Minutes from the Fort, main market and jetty.
The heat was quite stifling in Pate room at night especially under a net and with the fan on! Poor WiFi connection in Pate room and breakfast area, l always had to rely on my phone data.
