Beautiful stay in the caves of Matera’s Sassi. A unique experience!

Bora checked us in and it was a perfect stay from the get go. She gave us a map and pointed out all her recommendations.
We were on our honeymoon and we are LGBT+, she was very friendly and we felt so welcome, which means so much.
The room was incredible. The best room we’ve ever stayed in. Gorgeous and so cool inside despite outside being so so hot.
Our welcome gift wine was white but she had no issue at all swapping that out for some red after we requested it.
The breakfast was one of the best included breakfasts we have had too. Great selection of food. Something for everyone.
We would stay here 100 times if we could and will be recommending to everyone

We stayed at the property for a couple of nights. It was a complex of structures transformed in a luxury hotel and spa. The reception was an old 14th century cave church. A lot of things to see around and plenty more to do. The staff at the hotel is amazing, taking great care of guests. Breakfast is was very good with plenty of options to chose from. The area in front of the rooms is a perfect place to enjoy coffee or breakfast if weather allows it.

Grazie !

The spa room is stunning and our family loved staying in it. The staff were so friendly and helpful and breakfasts were delicious.

The location in magical Matera, the staff and the breakfast were all fantastic. Atmosphere in the room was very nice. They arranged parking + transfer for us beforehand.
Nothing really. Just good to know that if you choose the parking+transfer you park 10+ mins outside of Matera and get a transfer to the hotel. No problem though, overall stay was great!

Hotel is in the center of old town Matera, short walk away from all sights. The staff was very nice. The room was great especially the private pool in the basement.

Quirky, clean, room well equipped.

Position of the room was great with great view, so every morning we had breakfast in front of the room with the amazing view over the Sassi. Room was good equiped and everything was clean and nice. Personel was very polite and they made our stay even more plasent.
Everything was just fine.

The property was amazing and so rich on history.
The room was carved out the mountains and absolutely gorgeous.

Unique place, very friendly staff, enjoyed very our stay.

It was situated in the heart of Sassi di Matera, walking distance to sights, restaurants and shopping. It is a beautiful, small hotel with wonderful hosts! Don’t hesitate booking, it is such a unique hotel, you’ll be glad you stayed. They have a lovely buffet breakfast, and you can sit inside, or outside to dine. We stayed for a night in the family room, with private Turkish bath, and my teens loved it ( and it’s not easy to please them these days!). Some reviews mentioned the humidity of the room (due to the Turkish bath), but the spa area is downstairs, and if you keep the door closed, the humidity isn’t a problem. There is air-conditioning in the main areas and bedroom. Also, Netflix nice to have!

The breakfast was outstanding...the best I have had in Italy, and so nice eating it outside. The location was amazing as was the room. The staff could not be more helpful.

Wow! What an amazing stay at Thymus Residence Sassi! Perfect location in the middle of the Sassi, the rooms have been designed and renovated to blend with the style and caves perfectly! The staff was absolutely wonderful, accommodating and friendly. Do not give this a second thought, and book it!!!

Amazing location, staff very helpful with great suggestions for tours and dinners. Excellent breakfast. High quality rooms.
We had the spa/pool room which was stunning but worth noting that the pool makes the room slightly humid. Didn’t impact our stay negatively at all… stunning room.

Everything . The architecture , decor, the staff, the friendly personal touch, the gift of home made bread on leaving. Everything

Really unique, gorgeous setting, very clean and attentive to detail. Wonderful staff, delicious breakfast. Perfect location. We wished we could have stayed longer.
Everything was really lovely. It seemed a bit humid in the room but that may be par for the course when staying an such a place.

Staying in this very spacious well appointed cave was a very special experience. The staff were all very welcoming and helpful. We were given a loaf of Matera bread on departure and it turned out to be the best bread we’ve had on our trip. A simple but thoughtful gift

We loved the location. The room was large, quiet and comfortable and had a private Turkish bath that was fantastic. They offered a delicious breakfast, and have friendly and helpful staff. They were very kind and gave us tips on where to go for food and views and to enjoy the town. They even gave us a gift to remember them. We will gladly reserve this hotel when we return. We recommend paying for the private parking that they use. The parking company took us directly to the hotel. The parking garage was a little hard to find but we’re glad we used them.

- Our room with the private spa was just amazing. The perfect place to relax. Very romantic.
- The bed was comfortable. The bedroom is on a mezzanine but it was possible for us to stand up (I think it's ok if you are less than 1,80/1,85m)
- The staff was very friendly
- The breakfast was delicious
- Well located, in the historic center of Matera. We parked our car at 10 mins by foot from the hotel. We took only our small bagages

Exceptional decor and a very comfortable bed! Really liked the room. Excellent breakfast. Made to feel very welcome by Bora on Reception who was so helpful throughout our stay.
Enjoyed the walnuts, a lovely touch and liked the simplicity of the nut cracker which was efficient and looked good! The leaving gifts were an unexpected pleasure. Would love to stay here again.
Minor, but no coffee making facilities in the room as described in the brochure.
Would have been nice to have paper tissues in the room.
(Not a criticism, but as it was such a nice place, we would have liked something to read about it’s architectural conversion evolution.)
4.8
such a beautiful location and well equipped room. staff couldn’t be more welcoming and helpful. delicious breakfast with so much choice, pastries, meats, cheese, yoghurts, fresh fruit, local delicacies and homemade bread. all toiletries and hairdryer supplied. tea and coffee making facilities in the room along with mini bar. beautiful shower room too! used out of town parking with shuttle to get to the hotel and all worked well.
4.8
Nice place, at the edge of a "Sasso" in the historic part of the town. Nice, helpful, knowledgeable staff.
Very good breakfast: worth noting, as most listings with "breakfast included" mean that you get a voucher for a coffee and a croissant in a caffetteria nearby... (which is not what you mean when you check the box "breakfast" to book a place!)
So no mislabeling here: you actually get a good, real breakfast, on the host's premises.
(This mislabeling is becoming a widespread issue on Booking.com listings and I'm not sure who's responsible for that: the hosts or the platform...)
Warning: rooms are (obviously, once you see the place) rather small and not adapted to people with limited mobility (stairs all over the place, narrow alleys). Avoid big luggage.
If you're somewhat claustrophobic, get a room in a "regular hotel" in the newer part of town.
The old town itself is a maze of narrow, winding, steep alleys - which is an integral part of its charm. If you have limited mobility, you'll be confined to main streets and watching the landscape from their belvederes.
The town is worth visiting nonetheless.

The hosts were the best! Very friendly and always there for good advice on what to see/do or where to eat in Matera. The room was very beautiful and comfortabel.

Great room, and the Turkish steam room (in the room), was a brilliant extra touch.
