Excellent and very big Japanese-style breakfast. Really helpful staff - gave restaurant recommendations.
Extremely steep and high ladders up to top bunk! Worth asking for bottom bunk if you have mobility difficulties.

Very cosy old house, beautiful details, comfortable futon bed, very clean
Some house rules are too strict perhaps (nopossibility of leaving luggage on the day of departure, no check in central hours of the day, no shower from 11pm till morning, etc.), but you know it right away so you can get organized accordingly.

The house was a traditional Kyoto stile house just in the hart of Kamishichiken. Simply perfect.

the location is very nice and relaxing, close to many beautiful spots (local and tourist spots) and the guesthouse is very cozy. although old, it is clean and charming. a perfect place to stay in if you want to escape the city a bit

Such a cosy house with very friendly staff! I slept on the lower bunk bed and it felt like having my own room, as there was a lot of space around to organise my things. The other guests were nice and there was a good atmosphere. I had a lovely walk at sunset up the hill to Takeisao-jinja (Kenkun-jinja) Shrine. Unlike the other places I saw, there were no tourists.

Great and unique stay in Kyoto. Appreciate the effort the Guesthouse Kioto team to preserve these traditional machiya. I can feel and see the care of the place. I stayed 2 nights in their bunk beds (enjoyed the communal dining) and 2 nights on their private, traditional rooms, next building with separate entrance and love the whole experience. The bathrooms are shared but I have been using the recommended Onsen every night, must experience.
None specifically with the property but might consider the location if your main itinerary are the common tourist Kyoto spots like Gion or Yasaka Shrine as it takes around 30-45 mins by bus to go around. This was not an issue as I enjoyed Japan efficient public transportation.

It was located with good access to the city buses, making it easy to get around the city. It was also very clean and organized.
It was a bit tough to make it through a day traveling into Kyoto with my young son and then have to make-up our own futons. Ordering breakfast was also a problem. I understood that we could not order the next day breakfast on check-in (although I wondered why a light breakfast could not be offered in that case) but as I was staying two nights I was hoping for breakfast on the second morning. When I asked to request a breakfast the owner indicated that an 8am breakfast wasn’t available and I could order a 9am breakfast. I was there for work and with my son who regularly eats at 7am, so this was too late. I guess the issue is dining space, which explains the breakfast time slots. If you have a schedule for your trip, you might want to be careful about your expectations for breakfast.

Nice place situated in a residential area. This is a good choice if you've had enough touristy places! We loved it :) The only recommendation I have is to equip the accommodation with slippers for guests. We were there in colder weather and my feet were cold.

The guesthouse is beautiful with the traditional tatami flooring and futons. We had a lovely, relaxing stay. A bonus was that the breakfasts were yummy and Japanese. The hosts were also very nice.
Be aware that breakfast is served at 8am only, this didn’t allow for much schedule flexibility.
Slightly noisy due to it being an old place but people are quiet and there is a no noise rule after 11pm which helps.

The bed was the most comfortable of my whole trip!! There was free coffee and tea. The owners are very friendly and kind + the house itself is very beautiful, and I could see momiji from bed :)
There is just one space to brush your teeth/wash your hands/dry you hair that is shared with all the guests, so sometimes you have to wait. Nothing major, though.

It’s such a nice experience of staying at this cozy and lovely place and meeting one of the kindest and most supportive Japanese people that I’ve met. The bike is also good, it’s new and clean and it had a vital contribution to my exploration trip around Gion. They also have a heat controller for the blanket, it’s so wow.
I wish the bathroom and toilet can be inside the house so it’s warmer if someone takes a bath or goes to the toilet at late night or early morning

The Guesthouse Kioto is an excellent stay if you wanna stay in Kyoto. Basically is a Ryokan, a true one with a cosy atmosphere and where you really feel the japanese vibes. The owners are really helpful, the rooms are well equipped and they are in japanese style and really good looking. The bathrooms/showers look like oldstyle but they work perfectly and there is as well a small japanese garden surrounding them. The price matches what you find there. The position is good, close to bus stops and about 15-20 minutes walking from the Kinkaju-ji. The Guesthouse provides typical japanese breakfasts, which should be tried at least once while staying there. I would go there again!
The staff speaks plain english but actually it made my staying more interesting and forced me to improve my japanese, so it might be a plus or a minus.. it's up to you. If you want to meet other foreigners it might not be the best place for you. Most of people visiting the Guesthouse are japs but again, as I said before, it can be a bonus and not a minus..it's up to you!

It felt like a true escape from the big city, while still maintaining a ‘home’ like feel. It was comfortable and the amenities were great. There was plenty of personal touches too~

The simple but lovely style, antique furniture and extraordinary friendly hosts. If you like Japanese style you will absolutely love this place!

Staff were friendly and room was fine. Although there was a bit of a smell to the room. We were in the separate side with the individual rooms and it was quiet and comfortable.
It is quite far from the main areas of the city, but the buses run quite close.

We stayed at private room "四季" on first floor with a private garden. The Japanese room and garden are so beautiful! We felt relaxed and peaceful during our stay and had good sleep. Breakfast and coffee were delicious. The owner was friendly and introduced many great local food. Highly recommend this guesthouse!
No. Everything was good.

The host prepared a map of nearby restaurants and services which is really nice. Relatively far from the main tourist attractions so there are no nearby train/subway stations, must use a bus which was fine. The room and shared bathrooms and toilets were clean. Towels are not provided but could be rented, same goes with the bicycles.
