About this house rental
Situated in the beautiful and picturesque Wye Valley, Abernant House has elegant and comfortable accommodation for up to 18 people.
This impressive Edwardian country house has three spacious reception rooms including a comfortable drawing room, with Bechstein concert standard grand piano, library and an oak-panelled TV room.
The large kitchen, with a four-oven Aga, and dining room at the centre of the house are warm, inviting and great for entertaining. The dining room table seats 14, making it the perfect setting for a special celebration.
There are seven bedrooms, five of them very large with super king-sized double beds, along with two smaller twin rooms. The master bedroom has its own private balcony looking over the treetops towards the River Wye, and three other bedrooms also have balconies overlooking the garden and with stunning views down the Wye valley.
Standing in glorious mature gardens and some five-and-a-half acres intersected by the Nant stream and sweeping down to the River Wye, the house looks east across the valley to the fabled Aberedw Rocks.
The garden is flat alongside the house and slopes down to the banks of the Nant and the Wye, on which there is a private stone beach with listed fishing rights for guests. The garden has a swing on a giant copper beech tree and a stone barbecue shaded by its branches; perfect for summer garden parties and alfresco dining.
The house is only four miles from the market town of Builth Wells, location of the Royal Welsh Showground. Hay-on-Wye, world-famous for its array of book shops and the renowned Hay Literary Festival, is within a 20-minute drive, as is the cathedral county town of Brecon.
The surrounding countryside is some of the most beautiful in the Welsh Borders, with the stunning landscapes of both the Black Mountains and Brecon Beacons in easy reach. There are so many things to do in this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty: walking, cycling, mountain biking, canoeing, horse riding and pony trekking. The area is famous for its salmon and trout fishing.
During high season (July and August) our minimum stay is seven nights, running from Friday to Friday.
Abernant House has an intriguing history. The previous owner’s grandfather was Lord Caccia who was in the diplomatic service from the 1930s and then ambassador to the USA during the 1960s. He retired to be Provost of Eton College from 1970 to 1977.
Harold Caccia's father was Antonio Caccia, who was translator at the Treaty of Versailles. A rare copy of the Treaty was found in the house about 10 years ago!

We loved the house - lovely spacious well equipped kitchen, and delightful large lounge with with piano and views over the garden. Also a cosy snug, and dining room.
The gardens and views were beautiful, and plenty of walking for us and our dogs.
We had a few problems with the plumbing and heating, Louise was on hand and very helpful in sorting them out. It was a great house for a large gathering.

The owner has been extremely responsive to my questions bearing in mind we booked 15 months ago. Christmas decorations made a world of difference. The VRBO website less straightforward to negotiate. Great difficulty paying the balance. Happy to discuss off line.

The photos of the outside of the house online does not reflect fully what the property looks like now.
The inside of the property is very spacious and was clean.
The property owner and house manager were fantastic, very helpful and friendly!
We would definitely go again!

It was a real privilege to stay in such glorious surroundings in this wonderful home.. Three families of 6 adults & 4 children, except for one night, when Dorcas cooked us an excellent celebratory meal. for 3 more family members. Everything you could want is here, stunning well-equipped. kitchen, comfortable beds, library, beautiful garden and the River Wye. The rope swings were a great hit with the young. Abernant House totally made our holiday the success that it was. Thank you Louise for a spotless house & Steve for letting us stay, it was a very special treat. .

Incredible location
The house is as described and suited our needs perfectly. It needs a little TLC in places, but certainly had the wow factor. The location is stunning. A little river runs through the garden at the bottom of the hill, so it was easy to keep the kids away from it, unless the adults were there to supervise. We had an evening catered for us too & that was the icing on the cake. Steve was an incredibly responsive host with lots of information. Thank you for having us.

Could not be bettered
Wonderful all of my family thought the whole experience could not have been bettered in any aspect. It was a belated 80th birthday celebration and the first time all of us could be together for ages. Compliments to our host and his team also to Dorcas Cresswell who catered a great dinner for us.

Fantastic large holiday house
We had a lovely long weekend celebrating a 60th birthday at Abernant House. More than enough room for the 10 of us to relax and celebrate. A wonderful garden with the River Wye river running along the bottom. Steve was extremely helpful and accommodated certain requests for us.
Only slight negative is the proximity to the A road running along the front, but we knew it was there when booking so no surprises on arrival - just that it was tricky turning out onto the road when busy.

Family Half-term
Family holiday with 8 adults , 6 children from 5 months to 7yrs.
Space for everybody including chance to chill away for the main action in one of the sitting rooms. Party included several pianists, so the grand was a real bonus. Beautiful part of the world and garden down to the Wye was fabulous. The weather was not great, but still enough for everybody to enjoy. Now on our possible return list!

Great house for large groups
We really enjoyed our stay at Abernant House. Steve couldn’t have been more helpful and we were greeted on arrival with a lovely gift of cake and fresh eggs. The house was spotless and the kitchen/diner is large and very well equipped.
We were lucky with the weather and ate outside or at the large kitchen table, but there is also the option of eating in the more formal dining room. The bedrooms were all lovely and there is also a big laundry room that was very useful.
The house was even larger than expected and felt very spacious. Our extended family group included teenagers and they made use of the separate tv/sitting room in the evenings.
The garden is great, well kept and a lovely setting for eating out and plenty of space for family games. We also enjoyed having the river at the bottom of the bank to explore and tried our hand at fishing.
The house is well placed for day trips to the Elan Valley (where we’d booked bikes which can be hired from the visitor centre) and the Brecon Beacons and on our last night we enjoyed a great meal at The Greyhound in Builth Wells.
A wonderful, memorable week!

Love stay, which was a perfect size for a reunion with friends
A beautiful house and gardens to stay in over the weekend. It was the perfect size for 14 of us, and could all comfortable sit around the table for dinner or in one of the living rooms. Communication was easy, and our stay was very enjoyable!

WONDERFUL PLACE!
An absolutely beautiful house!
We were 12 adults aged 35-75 plus a 3 year old for a 70th birthday gathering. Every room was gorgeous & clean. Comfy beds & warm throughout. Multiple toilets & bathrooms so there was no queuing at any point. Amazingly well equipped kitchen with every utensil & pan you could ever need, aswell as a large food fridge and wine fridge. The garden was lovely, even in the rain, and lots of games in the Piano room kept us all entertained.
Steve has been brilliant with suggestion things to do locally and general communication, and Louise who met us to give us the key was really lovely and very welcoming. We are already planning our next family trip back to Abernant house & have recommended it to several friends already!
