About this cabin rental
The Great Escape is a spectacular mountain property that was built for privacy, relaxation and the enjoyment of the Blue Ridge Mountains. 106 private acres. Newly renovated with massive game room, expanded kitchen, and wrap around deck. In-ground private pool (30 x 14) available MAY 1st - SEPT 30 - no exceptions on dates. 4WD REQUIRED IN THE WINTER AND EARLY SPRING.
The 5,200 square foot, three level cabin with 6 bedrooms, two of which are en suite master bedrooms is located at 3,900 feet at the center/top of a private mountain spanning 106 acres which boasts spectacular westward views of meadows, mountains, and valleys. There is a guest cabin 100 yards from the main house that can be rented for $100 per night. The guest cabin includes the 7th bedroom and 6th bathroom.
Newly added 35x25 game room has pool, poker and shuffleboard tables. It also has a 8-seat bar with beer fridge, freezer for cocktail glasses and mugs, dishwasher and sink. Wood stove.
There are four large TVs in the main house (family room, game room upstairs master, downstairs tv room) and one in the guest cabin, but we haven't put a TV in the other bedrooms primarily because we originally bought the house so our kids would watch less, not more TV.
30 minutes north of Boone, 20 minutes from Mountain City. Last half mile uphill on a private gravel driveway. FOUR WHEEL DRIVE REQUIRED IN WINTER AND EARLY SPRING (always check the weather). We have had guests attempt the driveway after a snow in two wheel drive and we end up having to ask our neighbors with 4WD for help :) We have had guests bring trailers with bikes/motorcycles up the driveway without any issues, however less experienced/skilled motorcycle riders might not be comfortable with the gravel/pitch of drive.
There are gas stations/convenience stores 5-10 minutes away, but the closest full service grocery stores are in Boone and Mountain City which are 30 and 20 mins, away respectively.
Key Amenities:
Main House: 6 bedrooms, 5 and 1/2 baths in main house. This includes two master bedrooms. The primary master has a fireplace and a private deck with view.
There are two upstairs bedrooms with queens that share a bathroom.
In addition there are two "kids" rooms on the lower level that share a bathroom. These bedrooms have two bunk beds in each, however there is a full size bottom bunk in each room if you need more room for adults.
High Speed WIFI and ROKU/Cable.
Sonos music in the dining room, living room, upstairs master, downstairs rec room, deck and pool/patio/hot tub area. Makes it easy to stream your favorite music.
Two large TV areas with L-shaped couches. The one on the lower level is perfect for kids. Additional TV in the upstairs master.
Large dining room table seats 16.
Guest Cabin: 1 bedroom, w bath, kitchenette and sitting room (rents for an additional $100 per night). The guest cabin is approximately 100 yards from the main house. Great for grandparents, adult children who appreciate a little quiet. We never rent the guest cabin separately, so you will have complete privacy if you don't end up renting the guest cabin also. Guest cabin has high speed wifi and a smart TV too.

My family (including my husband, kids, my parents, siblings and all significant others, and my cousin) loved our stay here. It was big enough for everyone to be comfortable and have their own space. The two fridges and two dishwashers made it possible to cook and clean up after a large dinner for 14. There was plenty of space to hang out and the pool was perfect. The view was absolutely amazing. The owners were super responsive and helped out with anything we needed. We would absolutely recommend!

Our families have vacationed at the Great Escape 3 times now, driving in from FL, MI and NY and we’re already planning a 4th trip. It gets better every time with the addition of a pool and now a game room. Even though it rained half the time we were there we had so much to do right at the cabin. When we got out we went white water rafting (45 mins away) and did a 4 mile hike at Elk Knob with the kids (20 mins away). We love the views and the fact that 6 adults and 5 kids can stay here comfortably with lots of bedrooms and bathrooms.

Our family of 19 had an amazing time at this beautiful home. All the kids enjoyed the pool and hot tub and everyone loved hiking up the mountain. The newly remodel kitchen was beautiful! It was completely stocked with everything you could possibly need. We also enjoyed sitting around the bonfire every night with the amazing view!

The house was great. They recently enlarged the kitchen, added an additional bath and are working to finish the gameroom. The construction mess was a little disappointing, however we viewed it as growing pains for amenity improvements. Once the game room is finished it will be awesome. It has a pool table, shuffleboard table, card table and a wet bar with massive high ceilings. We enjoyed the large kitchen and two refrigerators and as other has mentioned the views are out of this world. We loved watching the changing of the weather over the mountians. The kids enjoyed the swimming pool, pool table and shuffleboard table as well as exploring the grounds. The Boone area is just beautiful and the weather was a much welcomed relief from the summer heat we are used to. "The Great Escape"was just what this Texas family was looking for.

Beautiful property, views, sunsets! Plenty of room for everyone! The grandkids loved the swimming pool! We’ll be back!!

This property, The Great Escape, provided a wonderful retreat for our family. The host was especially cordial and responsive in all the communications prior to and during our stay. We especially enjoyed the pool and hot tub, explored parts of the property on several hiking trails, continually enjoyed the wonderful views of the (sometimes cloud filled) valleys. On several clear nights the star filled skies were very visible with no ambient light near us. The man who heads up maintenance and construction on the property was extremely responsive and gracious. He even plugged a punctured tire (so we could get off the mountain) and told us about the best tire places in the area. We had to climb a learning curve with some of the new appliances (are you familiar with induction stove tops?) and the many room AC units, but, again, found our host and maintenance guy extremely responsive whenever we asked for help. The dining room is awesome -- seats 14 and provides a glorious view of the valley and sunsets. We had all the amenities needed. Members of our "tribe" are sharing information about The Great Escape with friends and co-workers.

We are a 3 generation family that vacation together every summer. We chose this location due to the very large property, pool, hot tub and the spaciousness of the home itself. The pictures of the inside haven't been updated as yet...we were astonished upon entry as a extremely large room has been added (not quite finished yet) and will be awesome when completed. The kitchen has been enlarged and all new cabinets and appliances installed. I would have rated the cleanliness with 5 stars if the house cleaners hadn't missed a couple out-of-the-way spots but overall it was pristine. Our 3 teenage grandsons were hardly every around as they hiked the property and fished about 30 mins away daily. The beauty of the mountains, etc. made for a fantastic setting. We also rented the cabin on the property and I especially enjoyed sitting on the porch swing listening to the frogs! If you love nature and peacefulness you can't go wrong. The owner, Gordie was great to work with as well. Thank You Gordie!

This is our favorite place for family vacation! We love The Great Escape! The new kitchen is double in size, maybe more. The two dishwashers and refrigerators are so convenient for a crowd. The new game room wasn’t completely finished so will be looking forward to that next year. We love being outside so having the pool and woods provide plenty of fun. Also enjoyed the expansion of the deck. Gordie is always quick to respond and any issues dealt with right away.

Incredible views, very quiet and comfortable stay. Surprised at construction while we were there, but overall the house was incredible and just what we wanted. The new kitchen was amazing, stocked with high end appliances and dishes. It was perfect for our family night "Chopped" competition.
Our group would definitely like to stay again!

The house was exactly as described with beautiful views, plenty of space inside and out and clean. Gordie was quick to respond to questions. I read reviews prior to booking about driveway and we really didn't find it to be as steep as described. We've stayed at houses in the past that had WAY worse driveways. With snow/ice, any driveway can be tricky but with our 4WD there was zero issues. Would definitely rent again!

The view is absolutely magical! We all enjoyed the pool and hot tub! There was quick response from the owner when we had a question. I would 100% recommend the house for large groups. It was the perfect size for our 5 families. The kids loved having their own space in the lower level with the bunk beds. To top it all off we were close enough to go on adventures (white water rafting, ziplining, shopping and hiking). It was the perfect spot! Thank you 😊

We were four families celebrating my parents’ golden anniversary. We kept commenting all week how perfect the find matched our needs and situation. I would recommend updating the mattresses and family room sectional for comfort purposes but otherwise everything was perfect.

What a wonderful week had by all. Perfect location, perfect house and perfect weather. So much to do for all ages. Everyone enjoyed the pool and hot tub; and the cool evenings around the fire pit were great! We were able to witness some spectacular sunsets. Hope to visit again soon.

My family of 8 adults and 3 children stayed a week at The Great Escape. Other than going to the grocery store and to dinner out twice, we saw no one else. This property sits perfectly secluded in the rural mountains along the TN/NC border. Even during one of the coolest and wettest weeks, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The saving grace was the heated pool and hot tub. The views and hikes, amazing. Seriously we want to come back and maybe next time for some snow.
The only reason i rated cleanliness a 4 was because some sinks and shower drains were slow to drain and needed a good clean and the pool skimmer needed some attending to. Nothing major.

We have a pretty large family and this place was perfect! We are a pretty loud bunch so being on 100 acres where no one could hear us helped so much. We stayed by the fire pit all night and all day playing cards. You really dont even have to go anywhere. The children were entertained the entire time with little screen time. The only thing is that the "ball field" is really just a small plot of land that you could easily kick a ball off the side of a mountain. We wanted to play kick ball but didnt want to take the chance. Overall amazing place for a bigger sized group.

Can’t say enough about our stay on this breath taking property. The view! Gordie was hands on in everything we needed and then some. Such a wonderful family trip with our children their spouses and families of the spouses. We’ll definitely need to return. Thank you for having us Gordie.

We loved it (2nd time to rent)! It accommodates our entire family well. The view in unbelievable. So much to do. Swimming (before October), hot tub, hiking, s’mores around the fire pit and the list goes on.

View spectacular pool treehouse trampoline swing big hit with the kids and adults as well. A lot of activities nearby to do. Would suggest more exterior lighting in and around pool and all speakers and tvs workable. Caretaker Shane and pool maintenance gentleman were awesome friendly and very accommodating One of our best family vacations!

The view was AMAZING! The pictures don't do it justice!
The pluses - Great support and response from Shane and Vince! Overall property was nice. Firewood provided and grill with extra propane tank, HUGE dining table, beautiful deck, and the audio system - especially at the pool was fantastic!
The minuses -
A mildew smell that permeated the house, some light fixtures didn't work, not as clean as it should be, some bedrooms didn't have TVs, and the biggest - Pool and hot tub people that were supposed to be there twice, never came at all.
Overall, it was a great vacation spot and we had a wonderful time!

Our family of 16 (Dad, Mom, 5 adult children, 3 sons-in-law, 6 grands [ages 19mo-10years], and 1 Bernese Mountain dog) had the most wonderful week at The Great Escape! We rented the guest cabin as well, which provided a bedroom for each adult/couple and one of the bunk rooms for 5 of the grands (the 19mo stayed with her folks in their room). The heated pool was great for swimming every day, and the baja shelf was perfect for our little ones who were less certain about swimming in the deeper water. It was great for adults as well, who didn't always want to get all the way in the water. Anytime at the pool, hot tub, or fire pit was amazing simply because of the awesome view! Sunsets were stunning. We had quite a few nights with storms rolling in (July), but they just added to the awe of God's creation as we looked down on clouds that rolled into the valley below.
We went into Boone on a couple of occasions (30 min. drive) to shop in the quaint stores downtown, play mini-golf, get ice cream, and shop at the Super Walmart. On our last day, we went hiking at nearby Laurel Creek Falls, and both kids and adults had a blast! There were many other things we thought of doing, but honestly, just staying at the house and playing in the pool, hiking the trails on the property, playing board games, relaxing in the hot tub, and enjoying the beauty all around made it hard to leave to go do other things! The temps each day ranged from the mid 70's-mid 80's, no humidity, and NO mosquitoes! We come from MD, so what a nice change!!
We would definitely recommend The Great Escape to anyone with a large family who wants to get away from the hustle-bustle and noise of civilization! Gordie was very gracious and kind in answering my many emails with questions and changes to our reservation when we added on the cabin & dog! Life is busy for everyone, and sometimes we had to wait a bit for answers between emails, but it was never a problem. Excellent host!

We had an amazing time at this beautiful home. Everything was immaculate, very well stocked kitchen, and attention to even the smallest details. Gorgeous view, all enjoyed the pool and hot tub, lots of pool furniture as well as plenty of Adirondack chairs around the fire pit. We felt safe letting the kids roam through the woods to the Playhouse and trampoline. One of the grandkids asked if we could please stay longer next time! We have rented five different houses in the past five years for our big family but we all agree that Great escape was the best yet. Also appreciated that the one bedroom cabin was available because we did need that extra bedroom and bathroom.

Beautiful Home and Property
The Great Escape was the by far the best property we have ever rented. This home offers everything you need for a vacation. A beautiful view, hiking, a pool, hot tub, games, living areas for everyone and a wonderful deck. We were close enough to take the kids to Tweetsie Railroad, the Mast General Store and white water rafting with Edge of the World. Gordie was very helpful with information before we arrived. Vince and Dan responded quickly to calls regarding trash and the pool. We all loved our time at the Great Escape and would definitely return again.

Our entire family - mother and 3 sisters and families - stayed here for a long weekend. We had a fantastic time. There is plenty of sleeping space, gathering space and getting away from each other space. The view is awesome, the outdoor space was great for our group. It is close enough to civilization for basic needs but far enough away that we didn't feel pressured to leave the cabin all weekend. Highly recommend for disconnecting from the world and reconnecting with family.
