About this cottage rental

Eagles Pass is a gorgeous coastal cottage on a 7-acre property five minutes from the Cabot Trail. There’s ocean, a huge beach nearby and breathtaking panoramas because Eagles Pass has windows everywhere, along with a cathedral ceiling, pine beams, and walls finished with white boards inside and cedar shingles outside, in classic Cape Breton style.

Eagles Pass has been listed by DWELL as one of "Eight Outstanding Cottages for Rent in Canada." It says: "A lovely holiday home by the sea on Nova Scotia’s Cape Breton Island, this cabin is surrounded by walking trails and stunning beaches. Its interior and (shingled exterior) are inspired by the region's maritime architecture."

The kitchen is modern and well-equipped, and there is an ocean-facing deck and BBQ with stunning views of the beach. There's also a decorative propane fireplace for cozy Autumn evenings. Lobster boats haul traps in front, eagles perch nearby, moose, bobcats and foxes make appearances, and whales pass by most of the year; you will wake up to these views each morning and enjoy them all day. You will enjoy seclusion and incredible views in one of the most spectacular parts of Cape Breton, on a gorgeous property with 3 ponds and 2 spring-fed brooks. As day turns to evening in technicolor, relax, listen to music or catch up on things you don't have time for at home.

This cottage changes over on Saturdays only. If your preferred weeks happen to be booked, please check our other lovely oceanside cottages: #203860, #382569, #3490361 #4265347 #2599594. (Although the cancellation policy lists "no refunds," there ARE refunds–it is just that our policy did not fall within VRBO's categories.)

For connecting with friends, streaming or surfing, you'll love having a fast, fibre-op connection even though we are seemingly far from the hubbub. Or, dig into a good book on the leather couch, and take in the view.

About us... Bell grew up in Margaree Valley, about twenty minutes from here, while I grew up in Toronto; we both love it here, so being here makes a lot of sense. I built this cottage by myself, integrating everything I have learned about building in the last fifteen years. The result is a cottage that has all of the charm of our original SeaSky cottage, but with excellent amenities, and lots of privacy right beside the ocean.

There is a rich, strong culture here, historically and musically, and life unwinds at its own special pace. Although a three-day visit to the Island is not uncommon, a week is what it takes to really get a sense of the rhythms and charm of Cape Breton. Fishermen haul their lobster traps each year out in front of our cottage. Moose, eagles, deer, bobcats and foxes are regulars. It's easy to meet people here, and the daily pace here is slower than in most cities. It's nice to be in a place where you don't need air-conditioning; Cape Breton summers are warm-to-hot in the day, but perfect in the evening, and at the shore there are lovely ocean breezes.

Chimney Corner beach is one of the finest on the island, and it's mostly unoccupied during the week– in addition to the fine beach and swimming, there are interesting rock formations to explore nearby. Cape Breton is a spectacular place, and you'll find the scenery on this stretch of coastline particularly striking.

Other things to do:: There is no shortage of things to do in the area. In addition to Chimney Corner beach 2 minutes away, there are other great beaches to check out nearby: Whale Cove (3 minutes away), Margaree Harbour beach (6 minutes away), the Broad Cove area, which offers a spectacular scenic drive, a great beach and a buffalo ranch. Cape Breton Highlands National Park is only a half-hour away, with fantastic trails, lookoffs and waterfalls.

South of us are the gorgeous rolling hills of Mabou, the town of Inverness, which both offer music, pubs and food; the acclaimed new Cabot Links and Cabot Cliffs golf courses by the sea (which are only 20 minutes away). There are also renowned crafters in the area; interesting quilting, rug hooking, and folk-art can all be found locally.

This is the most perfect getaway you could ever dream up. Chimney corner provided swimming on a quiet beach, daily views of eagles and seals. A great place to bring along your paddle board or kayak. St. Lawrence Bay is so beautiful at sunset from your back deck.

My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our time at Eagles Pass. Stewart was very responsive and helpful with suggestions as to things to see in the area. We had a mix of rainy and sunny days but we enjoyed each of them as the views from the cottage are very enjoyable.

I saw this house on VRBO last year and started researching Stewart’s available houses, along with Cape Breton Island. Stewart built his houses and Eagles Pass is beautiful but simplistic. His craftsmanship is amazing. It is one of the most peaceful places we have stayed, and very well appointed. The house sits on a cliff overlooking the water and all you can hear most of the time are birds. At times you can hear families enjoying the beach below. We absolutely loved having the windows and doors open all day with the cool breeze blowing through. Another plus is that this side of Cape Breton Island is the most beautiful part of the coastline of the Cabot Trail. Stewart is so personable and was so kind to spend time giving us recommendations of things to see and places to eat, and let us know where not to waste our time. Everyone in this area was so kind and friendly. If you have any interest in staying in this area you have got to contact Stewart. His property is something to see!

We loved the entire Cape Breton area and the cottage we stayed in was so charming and cozy with unbelievable views! Stewart was an amazing host! He met with us at the cottage and directed us to all the wonderful places that Cape Breton offers. We really enjoyed all the hikes in Cape Breton, especially White Point (very remote and beautiful!) You have to attend the Ceilidh at the Normaway Inn Barn - so much fun and it was the first time I had square danced in ages! Baddeck was a beautiful area and the Alexander Graham Bell museum was amazing and educational. We will definitely be back - may in the Fall next time to see the change of colors.

Views are outstanding. Cottage is small but comfortable. Stewart offers his guests many insights ranging from food, to exploration, and local knowledge that can’t be acquired through pamphlets and magazines.
