About this cottage rental
Eagles Pass is a gorgeous coastal cottage on a 7-acre property five minutes from the Cabot Trail. There’s ocean, a huge beach nearby and breathtaking panoramas because Eagles Pass has windows everywhere, along with a cathedral ceiling, pine beams, and walls finished with white boards inside and cedar shingles outside, in classic Cape Breton style.
Eagles Pass has been listed by DWELL as one of "Eight Outstanding Cottages for Rent in Canada." It says: "A lovely holiday home by the sea on Nova Scotia’s Cape Breton Island, this cabin is surrounded by walking trails and stunning beaches. Its interior and (shingled exterior) are inspired by the region's maritime architecture."
The kitchen is modern and well-equipped, and there is an ocean-facing deck and BBQ with stunning views of the beach. There's also a decorative propane fireplace for cozy Autumn evenings. Lobster boats haul traps in front, eagles perch nearby, moose, bobcats and foxes make appearances, and whales pass by most of the year; you will wake up to these views each morning and enjoy them all day. You will enjoy seclusion and incredible views in one of the most spectacular parts of Cape Breton, on a gorgeous property with 3 ponds and 2 spring-fed brooks. As day turns to evening in technicolor, relax, listen to music or catch up on things you don't have time for at home.
This cottage changes over on Saturdays only. If your preferred weeks happen to be booked, please check our other lovely oceanside cottages: #203860, #382569, #3490361 #4265347 #2599594. (Although the cancellation policy lists "no refunds," there ARE refunds–it is just that our policy did not fall within VRBO's categories.)
For connecting with friends, streaming or surfing, you'll love having a fast, fibre-op connection even though we are seemingly far from the hubbub. Or, dig into a good book on the leather couch, and take in the view.
About us... Bell grew up in Margaree Valley, about twenty minutes from here, while I grew up in Toronto; we both love it here, so being here makes a lot of sense. I built this cottage by myself, integrating everything I have learned about building in the last fifteen years. The result is a cottage that has all of the charm of our original SeaSky cottage, but with excellent amenities, and lots of privacy right beside the ocean.
There is a rich, strong culture here, historically and musically, and life unwinds at its own special pace. Although a three-day visit to the Island is not uncommon, a week is what it takes to really get a sense of the rhythms and charm of Cape Breton. Fishermen haul their lobster traps each year out in front of our cottage. Moose, eagles, deer, bobcats and foxes are regulars. It's easy to meet people here, and the daily pace here is slower than in most cities. It's nice to be in a place where you don't need air-conditioning; Cape Breton summers are warm-to-hot in the day, but perfect in the evening, and at the shore there are lovely ocean breezes.
Chimney Corner beach is one of the finest on the island, and it's mostly unoccupied during the week– in addition to the fine beach and swimming, there are interesting rock formations to explore nearby. Cape Breton is a spectacular place, and you'll find the scenery on this stretch of coastline particularly striking.
Other things to do:: There is no shortage of things to do in the area. In addition to Chimney Corner beach 2 minutes away, there are other great beaches to check out nearby: Whale Cove (3 minutes away), Margaree Harbour beach (6 minutes away), the Broad Cove area, which offers a spectacular scenic drive, a great beach and a buffalo ranch. Cape Breton Highlands National Park is only a half-hour away, with fantastic trails, lookoffs and waterfalls.
South of us are the gorgeous rolling hills of Mabou, the town of Inverness, which both offer music, pubs and food; the acclaimed new Cabot Links and Cabot Cliffs golf courses by the sea (which are only 20 minutes away). There are also renowned crafters in the area; interesting quilting, rug hooking, and folk-art can all be found locally.

This is the most perfect getaway you could ever dream up. Chimney corner provided swimming on a quiet beach, daily views of eagles and seals. A great place to bring along your paddle board or kayak. St. Lawrence Bay is so beautiful at sunset from your back deck.

My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our time at Eagles Pass. Stewart was very responsive and helpful with suggestions as to things to see in the area. We had a mix of rainy and sunny days but we enjoyed each of them as the views from the cottage are very enjoyable.

I saw this house on VRBO last year and started researching Stewart’s available houses, along with Cape Breton Island. Stewart built his houses and Eagles Pass is beautiful but simplistic. His craftsmanship is amazing. It is one of the most peaceful places we have stayed, and very well appointed. The house sits on a cliff overlooking the water and all you can hear most of the time are birds. At times you can hear families enjoying the beach below. We absolutely loved having the windows and doors open all day with the cool breeze blowing through. Another plus is that this side of Cape Breton Island is the most beautiful part of the coastline of the Cabot Trail. Stewart is so personable and was so kind to spend time giving us recommendations of things to see and places to eat, and let us know where not to waste our time. Everyone in this area was so kind and friendly. If you have any interest in staying in this area you have got to contact Stewart. His property is something to see!

We loved staying at this cottage! Breathtaking views of the ocean with lots of privacy. Great location midway between Cheticamp and Inverness. Would definitely return for another visit.

We loved the entire Cape Breton area and the cottage we stayed in was so charming and cozy with unbelievable views! Stewart was an amazing host! He met with us at the cottage and directed us to all the wonderful places that Cape Breton offers.
We really enjoyed all the hikes in Cape Breton, especially White Point (very remote and beautiful!) You have to attend the Ceilidh at the Normaway Inn Barn - so much fun and it was the first time I had square danced in ages! Baddeck was a beautiful area and the Alexander Graham Bell museum was amazing and educational.
We will definitely be back - may in the Fall next time to see the change of colors.

Views are outstanding. Cottage is small but comfortable. Stewart offers his guests many insights ranging from food, to exploration, and local knowledge that can’t be acquired through pamphlets and magazines.

Eagles Pass is a dreamy getaway! The cottage itself is greater than any photo can portray. It provided all the comforts one needs plus wonderful views and relaxation. Stewart is a wonderful host and provides great information about the area. Can’t go wrong!

We really enjoyed our stay here! The pictures are accurate. The views are stunning. Stewart the owner came out the first day and met us and asked us what are somethings we are looking to do and offered suggestions. He made a map and a list for us and we hit everything on the list! At the end of each day we relaxed, cooked a few dinners, watched the sunsets and played family games. We’re from Michigan and had no idea how beautiful Northern Canada is. My husband golfed Cabot Cliffs and really enjoyed it. We also went to Cape Breton Highlands National Park a few days, beautiful! Highly recommended this place to stay!

Our family had an amazing time. Great house and the view is somehow even better than the photos show. Chimney Corner Beach is wonderful and perfect for small kids - warm water, small waves, shallow. Surrounding area has no shortage of outdoor activities and good restaurants. Locals are extremely friendly and welcoming. Finally, Stewart was a terrific host and took time at the outset to make numerous recommendations for places to go, all of which were great. Had an incredible stay and can’t wait to come back!

We spent a perfect week on Chimney corner. The views, the cottage, the art, the reading materials our whole experience was carefully curated and it was a delight. A beautiful holiday for anyone looking for a little r&r by the ocean.

We stayed in Eagles Pass for two weeks this fall. It was our first time in Cape Breton and won't be our last. The cottage is a stylish, minimalist design that is very appealing inside and out. The location is beautiful and private; cliffside overlooking the sea. We loved the amazing views especially at sunset. Stewart and Bell are very nice people and gracious hosts and I now count them as friends. Five stars.

We loved staying at Eagle’s Pass for the week, wish it was longer! The cottage was beautiful and comfortably furnished - incredible bright, sunny space overlooking the sea. Great kitchen & table for dining in. Really comfortable bed - appreciated the variety of pillows and cozy comforter. This is a quiet place to unplug and settle onto the island, about 15 minutes from town. Despite the cooler temps, we sat out on the deck each evening hearing the waves and looking at the vast sky of stars. Our host, Stewart, was fantastic. Continual communication and stopped by once we arrived, to point out things to enjoy along Cape Breton. He also kept us informed of the changing weather, as we were there when a hurricane was moving toward the island. We absolutely plan to return to the same cottage again!

Another great stay in Eagles Pass! It lives up to its name as the eagles fly by daily. The seals and porpoises put on a show for us all week and the warm waters of the Chimney Corner beach were very refreshing. The cottage itself is situated in the natural growth of the cliff side providing a feeling that you are one with nature. The kitchen has everything you should need to create that special vacation supper and the rest of the cottage is very comfortable.
We will be sure to return in the near future!

We were searching for a way to escape a stressful season and reconnect with nature, and this place was perfect. It's very cute, tastefully minimal, and a nice "home base" for exploring stunning Cape Breton. The view out the back deck was just as dreamy as I had hoped. You can hear the waves crashing down below, the wind in the trees, and the faintest yells of happy children on the beach. It restores your soul. The internet was spotty (especially during bad weather) but good enough to download maps and check email. (You should definitely download maps to your phones; the cell signal is spotty, especially farther north.) Weather in this area seems pretty unpredictable, so keep your plans flexible and roll with however Nature wants your vacation to unfold. We had one day of thunderstorms, which we spent reading on the couch, listening to the rain, and appreciating the cozy cottage vibe. I highly recommend it.

Stuart and his wife Bell have built a truly remarkable cottage, right on the cliff in Cape Breton. If you're looking at the pictures and wonder if it looks actually that great in reality, I can assure you, it looks even better!
We enjoyed waking up to this wonderful view, as well as seeing the most breathtaking sunsets you can get in Canada. The cottage itself is beautifully designed and the kitchen is well-equipped for a cottage of this size. The decoration fits well into the overall atmosphere of the place. The incredibly well curated iPod playlist provides the right background theme for your vacation. So does the equally well curated book collection. If you are in the right vacation mood to finally read that Chomsky, Stuart has got you covered.
His recommendations for dining and activities were on-point and helped up making the right choices to get the best out of our week.

The setting is breathtaking; a classic, beautiful cottage with a panoramic view of Chimney Corner and the Gulf - both absolutely stunning!! The cottage is beautifully decorated and has everything you need, including soft, luxurious bed linens and plush bath towels. Stewart is an exceptional host, spending an hour with us the day after our arrival to orient us and recommend excursions, hiking trails, and nearby dining options (Dancing Goat has the best breakfasts and cookies!!). The Chimney Corner beach is spectacular, a truly unspoiled hidden gem.
Thank you Stewart for all that you did to make our stay amazing. Hard to leave this special and tranquil place, but we hope to be back again!

Chimney Corner/Heaven
Every single thing about our trip to Cape Breton Island was absolute perfection . Our Chimney Corner cottage was absolutely everything we had hoped for and more! The view!!!!!! Unbelievable! The accommodations, just perfect. Stewart was an attentive host, spending almost 1 hour with us the day following our arrival, to guide us through our stay. His recommendation to dine at Woodroad, was an experience of a lifetime! Bucket list trip!!

Highly recommend to couples looking to unplug and reconnect with each other and nature.
This rental exceeded our expectations. Upon arrival, the view was breathtaking. Inside was equally as satisfying. The kitchen was equipped with everything we needed and the bed was incredibly comfortable with high quality cotton sheets and choice of pillow type. Stewart gave us excellent recommendations on food and hiking. This is the perfect place for a couple to getaway, unplug and use as a jumping off point to enjoy what Cape Breton has to offer.

Perfect getaway
It's not often that a rental property lives up to expectations, no less exceeds them to the extent that the Eagle's Pass cottage did. The pictures provided are exactly what you get, and what you get is amazing---the cottage itself, the views, the peace and quiet, the easy access to all things Cape Breton. Amazing.

Incredible Views - Going to Cape Breton? You need to stay here!
Our stay at Eagle's Pass was incredible. Loved sitting in the cottage watching the sunset through the huge windows in the cabin overlooking the bay. View was beautiful. The cabin was private, clean, and well appointed. Great selection of music on the iPod/speaker system (nice touch!). Stewart was great to deal with and gave us lots of helpful tips on where to eat and what to see while we were on the Island. Loved the unique style of the cabin. Would definitely stay here again!

Little corner of paradise
This is by far one of the most relaxing, tranquil and beautiful vacations we have ever had in the Maritimes. Eagles Pass was beyond stunning, with breathtaking views of the ocean and hidden gem chimney corner beach. Stewart the host welcomed us like old friends, helped us map out our sightseeing adventures and customized a map of some of the Cabot Trails little known secret spots. We will absolutely return next year! Eagles Pass should be on your top 5 places to see in Nova Scotia!

My family and I spent a week at Eagles Pass this summer and it was a fantastic spot. It was private, tranquil, rustic and near a very beautiful quiet beach. Beautiful peaceful cottage on ocean
Beautiful clean cottage in a private location on cliff next to ocean. Chimney Corner is on the west coast of Cape Breton, NS close to Margaree Harbour. Owner has several cottages and lives on property in a separate house, so available if you need anything. He’s a good resource for what to do on the island. Cape Breton is a lovely island full of good Celtic / Acadian music and friendly people. Always sad when our week is up to leave the island and this peaceful cabin.

Absolutely perfect! A beautiful spot overlooking Chimney Corner beach, very private yet well-situated with more activities nearby than what we could get to in a week. Stewart is a great host, so helpful and informative. Highly recommended!

We spent the last week of our three-week Eastern Canada vacation at Eagles Pass Cottage, and could not have made a better selection! Having never been to Cape Breton before, we were somewhat dependent on recommendations from the cottage owner, Stewart Applegath. Not only did Stewart make great suggestions (both in person and by the info in the cottage) for restaurants, bakeries, pubs, live music, farmers markets, whale watching, hikes and beaches, but it seemed like everyone in the area knew him, and liked him too! He is a strong ambassador for Cape Breton, where the people are among the most friendly anywhere. The cottage is fantastic; perfect for a week or even a month. We had dinner there four times, just because we wanted to watch the sunset, view the eagle and ships through the telescope, and listen to the waves. Architecturally, the design is outstanding; more than enough room for us but also cozy. The view, the view, the view!!! We definitely plan to return! April and Doug KonopkaHouston, Texas

A little piece of paradise!
Eagles Pass is one of the most wonderful vacation rental homes we've ever stayed in. The cottage was roomy, bright, very comfortable and immaculate. I definitely picked the perfect cottage and location for my husband's birthday. The ocean view and the beach itself were astounding. I actually saw two eagles pass right by the deck and you can see them sitting on the rocks by the beach most mornings. We spent far less time exploring away from the cottage than we thought we would because we just wanted to absorb the majesty of the views the cottage offered. Stewart was super responsive in the planning and reservation stages, and met us at the cottage to explain how everything worked and all the must sees in Cape Breton. Location was perfect and a great base for exploring Cape Breton. Eagles Pass was a fantastic place to stay and we hope our travels will take us there again, hopefully next year. Our thanks to Stewart and Bell for allowing us a week in their gorgeous cottage. Thank you!

Awesome getaway!
We had a great week at Eagle Pass! It was perfect for our family of 4. Highlights were being able to zip down to Chimney Corner beach each day and watching the eagles from the back porch. Would also definitely recommend a whale watching tour - we did ours in Cheticamp.

This property is everything it seems to be from the online listing. It is clean, well stocked, and accurately portrayed in the pictures. The view is breathtaking. The owner provided us a detailed overview of the area, with restaurants and places to avoid as well as recommendations. This was very valuable and accurate. Highly recommended!

Beautiful house in idyllic setting
Our stay at Eagles Rest was perfect! The setting was beautiful and romantic, just what we wanted as we were celebrating 36 years of marriage. We enjoyed hiking in the area and then returning to the house for dinner and a beautiful sunset every day. We enjoyed delicious breakfasts and lunches at area restaurants recommended by Stewart. We would recommend this property enthusiastically! Returning to Eagles Rest is on our to do list! Thank you Stewart for being so attentive and helping make this trip so memorable, it was everything we hoped for and more.

Wonderful!
This cottage located in Chimney Corner, near to the Cabot Trail, Margaree, Inverness, Cheticamp, and Mabou, just happens to be located on a cliff overlooking the Northumberland Strait, accurately pictured the photos here. The cottage is filled with light from many large windows, is beautifully constructed, and with everything you'd want or need in a cottage. The design and construction is elegantly simple, rustic, and yet beautifully finished. It was spotlessly clean when we arrived, was not lacking for anything that we needed for cooking and eating, and....everything worked. The cottage opens up to the breezes wonderfully and yet when it got cool at night (we were there in mid-September) we had the option of a heater in the bedroom and a stove in the living room.
It is sort of an amazing mix of romantic simplicity, elegance, and surprising practicality. It is the perfect little cottage in the woods overlooking the ocean that I've been dreaming about for years. I had begun to doubt that such a spot existed but it does.
My wife and I had a perfect time here. 'Nuff said.

Rustic and Stylish Serenity on a Seacliff
This cottage and its setting are a dream. Handmade by the owners, white-washed interior wood planking, exposed pine beams and beautiful floors, handmade furniture, and beautiful antiques, artwork and photography surround you while you listen to the wind singing in the pines outside. The quintessential dream cottage. Views of the sea are panoramic and you could sit watching it all day with it’s changing colors: Moody, gray and wind-lashed one minute and the next indigo blue waters and incandescent skies. The grand finale is the amazing sunsets which melt right into the horizon past rocky headlands.
It’s difficult to pull yourself away to see all the beautiful sites and participate in the rich cultural experiences in the nearby valley and coastal towns. The owners, Stewart and Bell, are fantastic resources for recommending scenic drives, hikes, wonderful places to see and good places to eat. Their love for Cape Breton is obvious in their enthusiasm for sharing this beautiful land with their guests.
Hospitality is unmatched. Stewart and Bell attended to every detail including cleaning the windows several times after the sea and the wind caused a build up of salt on the windows ( I was there at the beginning of the storm season) .
I hope that my family and I will have many other opportunities to visit the cottage and get to know Cape Breton more deeply.

Fantastic! Adorable cottage overlooking the wide open ocean.
From the minute we drove up to the cottage, I fell in love with it. It is totally private and quiet. The cottage was just as an ocean home should be. It was very clean and welcoming. We will definitely return to this perfect getaway location. The owner is also so informative about the area. We saw most of the highlights of the beautiful area.

Wonderful private setting with beautiful view of ocean and wildlife and simple, functional layout.
Property was as beautiful as advertised. Great view high above ocean and of Chimney Corner from inside the cottage and on the deck. We saw bald eagles perched on Chimney Corner rocks at all times of the days (bring binoculars) and one sat in a tree adjacent to cottage for an extended time. Stewart was particularly helpful with planning our visit by spending time with us after our arrival going over possible activities and day trips and identifying special items that we likely would have missed without his advice.
