About this cottage rental
The Cape Cottage is a gorgeous coastal cottage on a 130-acre property five minutes from the Cabot Trail. It is listed on Homeaway's Top 10 Vacation Rentals in Nova Scotia, at #8 "Margaree's Cottage."
There’s ocean, a huge beach nearby and breathtaking panoramas because The Cape has windows everywhere, along with a cathedral ceiling, lovely beams, and walls finished with white boards inside and cedar shingles outside, in classic Cape Breton style. From the deck, you can see Lobster boats, eagles perch nearby, moose, bobcats and foxes make appearances, and whales pass by most of the year; you will wake up to these views each morning and enjoy them all day.
You will enjoy complete seclusion and incredible views in one of the most spectacular parts of Cape Breton. There is a lovely, mature hardwood forest to explore, and as day turns to evening in technicolor, relax, listen to music or catch up on things you don't have time for at home.
If your preferred weeks happen to be booked this summer, please check our other lovely oceanside cottages: #2599594 (nearby with same spectacular views) #277105, #203860, #382569, #3490361 This cottage normally books by the week, Sundays to Sundays, when you are choosing your preferred dates. (Although the cancellation policy lists "no refunds," there ARE refunds–it is just that our policy did not fall within VRBO's categories.)
For connecting with friends, streaming or surfing, you will love having a 150 mb/sec. fibre-op connection even though we are seemingly far from the hubbub. Dig into a good book, or just enjoy the view.
I designed this cottage to have all of the charm of a real coastal cottage, with excellent amenities, and lots of privacy in a spectacular setting with fantastic views of the ocean. Many folks rent out their seasonal homes in Cape Breton, but The Cape Cottage was designed specifically for visitors' pleasure and needs. There are two bedrooms; a master and a smaller second bedroom which is great if you are travelling with children. The tiled bathroom is roomy, with heated floors. A decorative propane fireplace and electric heat will keep you cozy on chilly Spring or Fall days. A large deck with BBQ is perfect for watching eagles go by or boats out front. This cottage changes over on Sundays only.
There is a rich, strong culture here, historically and musically, and life unwinds at its own special pace. Although a three-day visit to the Island is not uncommon, a week is what it takes to really get a sense of the rhythms and charm of Cape Breton. It's easy to meet people here, and the daily pace here is slower than in most cities. Cape Breton summers are warm-to-hot in the day, but perfect in the evening, and at the shore there are lovely ocean breezes
Chimney Corner beach is one of the finest on the island, and it's mostly unoccupied during the week– in addition to the fine beach and safe swimming for children, there are interesting rock formations to explore nearby. Fossils abound. Cape Breton is a spectacular place, and you'll find the scenery on this stretch of coastline particularly striking.
There is no shortage of things to do in the area. In addition to Chimney Corner beach, there are other great beaches to check out nearby: Whale Cove (3 minutes away) at which you can explore a fabulous bluff by the sea, with great views north and south, Margaree Harbour (5 minutes away), with its beach and two lighthouses, the Broad Cove area, which offers a spectacular scenic drive; Cheticamp, about 20 minutes away, offers glimpses into Acadian culture.
Only minutes from Cheticamp is Cape Breton Highlands National Park, with trails, look-offs and waterfalls. There are the gorgeous rolling hills of Mabou, and the town of Inverness, which offers music, pubs and food; the acclaimed new Cabot Links golf course (rated #42 in the world by Golf Digest) by the sea, which is only 20 minutes away. There are also renowned crafters in the area; beautiful pottery, quilting, rug hooking, and folk-art can all be found locally.

The Cape was perfect! Beautiful retreat after spending days in some of the most awe inspiring land scapes we have ever seen.

We loved the Cape Cottage! The kitchen had everything needed to cook fresh seafood, comfortable beds, we felt all the coziness with plenty of space to unwind. The ocean gazing, Chimney Corner Beach down the road, whale and eagle viewing from the sitting area and lush forest to explore around the cottage was so special we cannot wait to return next year!

The house is open and bright, set on a hillside overlooking the coast below. Private and quiet, an excellent getaway. Many local places to visit and explore for hiking, biking, dinners out. We enjoyed live music of the region and nearby Highlands National Park for hiking. Knowledgeable and helpful host.

The cape house is simply lovely. Sits up on a hill overlooking the water. Sunsets out your window. The house itself has been tastefully decorated and has everything you’d want for a week. It’s a drive to get anywhere but that’s the nature of Cape Breton. Sitting on that beautiful coast gives you access to wonderful beaches, the national park, hiking and music. The host meets you on day one and lays out a map and list of things to do and see, where to eat and where not to eat. He was spot-on with his recommendations.
The only issue we had was a booking snafu. After reaching out far in advance we were asked what Friday-Friday dates we wanted. We picked a summer week and was told to reach out in November again to confirm but they’d be saved for us. We did and received a lease for the stay. We signed the lease and planned a 3 week vacation around the rental. What I didn’t notice was the lease was changed to a Sunday-Sunday rental. Same weekends but two days later. This was not pointed out to me. Because of this, we had to leave a day earlier than planned and find other last minute accommodation for two nights when I finally noticed the change months later. I wish he had noted he needed to change the dates when sending us the lease agreement. I wish I had checked the dates on the lease. We wound up paying for a night we couldn’t stay and losing a beautiful day in Cape Breton.

The host were welcoming, made us feel like we were home, the stay was exactly what we needed to disconnect from our day-to-day life. Area is a jewel and isolated.

Cape Cottage is tastefully decorated and lovingly cared for. Stewart, the host, met with us on arrival and made several suggestions about interesting things to do in the area. Thanks Stewart! We took many of your suggestions and had an absolutely wonderful vacation. The cottage felt like a cozy home, greeting us almost every night with an incredible sunset over the ocean. We would love to return!

Magical place
Stewart’s cottage is the most perfect place to be. Surrounded by incredible nature and sunsets that I will never forget. It is truly a magical and rare place and you can feel the love that went into the space. It was such a wonderful experience I am going back in the fall for another magical week.

WOW! Just book it.
What a magical week. Stewart's cottage is everything you need and nothing that you don't. A stunning location, easily accessible to so many treasures - beautiful beaches with crystal clear water, well maintained hikes and trails, one-of-a-kind food shops with real character, music and more.
We're excited to return and to send people we know to experience the beauty and bounty of Cape Breton.

Simply the best!!!
We can’t wait to come back and stay at this beautiful VRBO. My family had an amazing week stay at simply the best place to call home for bit.
Location- Vast ocean views with the nicest sunsets seen anywhere.
Close to amazing beaches for swimming and relaxing.
So many places to see or just sit back and enjoy the peace. The cottage is located in the perfect location for a day around the Famous Cabot a trail or a quick drive to Inverness for golf, beach or eateries.
The host Stewart is the nicest host I’ve encountered. He really cared about our stay and ensured we had everything at our finger tips.
Super knowledgeable and has fantastic recommendations to ensure the best possible experience possible.
Thank you.
See you soon.

Well appointed cottage with privacy and stunning views
The “Cape” was a lovely spot to tuck into for a week. Situated up a steep hill overlooking the Northumberland Strait it offered beautiful sunsets and easy access to beaches, amenities and the National Park. The place had everything one might need - a well supplied kitchen, books, music, games, beach towels, a comfy bed and an excellent shower. The host made himself available and provided useful tips and advice for the cottage and the area. I would recommend this place to anyone looking for a comfy base from which to explore this part of Cape Breton.

This listing is EXACTLY as it appears
Such a wonderful week at such a beautiful property. The view is amazing. Sun, rain, cloudy, whatever the weather, such an amazing view to wake up to everyday. A perfect location for exploring the west coast of Cape Breton, a two minute drive to a beautiful beach, close to the National Park, and short easy drives to nearby communities. A very attentive host who was easy to communicate with and is keen to share information about his beautiful part of the province. We could not have been happier with our week at this property.

Cape cottage
Absolutely stunning location on mountain overlooking the Gulf of St Lawrence with amazing sunset views. Chimney corner beach is one of the most perfect beaches in NS and a short 2 min drive from the property. The property has a cool ‘cottage’ aesthetic and is very clean and modern as pictures depict. Would stay there again.

It's hard to believe, but the view was even more magical than described in the listing. Our first night we opened a bottle of local wine and watched the sunset on the ocean. The cottage is modern and well designed and comes with everything you need. A perfect get away spot!

Fabulous!!!!
We had an amazing vacation! Property is beautifully appointed. Views second to none! There is everything you can imagine in the cottage, garlic press, grater, corkscrew! Minutes from one of the most beautiful beaches ion the Island, 30 minutes to Cheticamp and a Inverness which boast great dining options. The cottage gives you an incredible sense of privacy, you feel very secluded. The design of the cottage is warm and inviting. We would highly recommend and would certainly return! Thanks so much Stewart and Belle!

This place is located on the side of a mountain, well maybe not a mountain but I am from Florida, so mountain. It has a beautiful view of the ocean with wonderful sunsets. Our host, Steward, couldn't have been more helpful. He spent 2-hours with us to discuss areas we should visit and avoid. I would suggest you have questions ready. He checked with us throughout the week to make sure everything was going well and that we enjoyed our stay. The place is super clean, quiet, and comfortable. Only downside would be the bed is more like sleeping on a futon but overall comfortable. It was a long trip from Florida but was so nice to get away and this place just made relaxing so much better.

The One
Let me start by saying that immediately following a facebook post highlighting our week-long stay in Chimney Corner, I had dozens of friends ask for the link to stay at Cape Cottage. The pictures don't lie. If you've never been to Cape Breton Island, put it on your bucket list, While the entire west coast of the island is absolutely stunning and definitely worth exploring, Chimney Corner's beach, just a 2 min. drive away from Cape Cottage, wins the prize. Literally, the warmest and clearest waters north of the Carolina's with powdery sand. Who knew? Don't waste your time searching for other properties. This is the one.

Wonderful Vacation
It was our first trip to Cape Breton and we had a wonderful time . The cabin was as lovely as the pictures and the view was simply amazing . Our host Stewart was wonderful To work with and went above and beyond to explain the area and things to do . That was especially helpful to us with it being our first time visiting . The beaches were sandy and ocean was beautiful, clean , shallow and warm much like the Caribbean !
Being from Alberta we do boast the mountains although our ride along Cabot Trail and through the National Park was amazing . We enjoyed many of the beaches and scenery in the area, there is a wonderful beach just 4 minutes from the cabin . We enjoyed our days touring around the little towns and beaches and equally enjoyed our time in the cabin. It had all the amenities for cooking and the atmosphere was beautiful The restaurants were very good, seafood and chowder galore can’t go wrong , also had some delicious Alberta Beef!! Be sure to experience the Dancing Goat restaurant , best blueberry pancakes I’ve had to date !
You can’t go wrong visiting Chimney Corner , there is lots to do and the people are certainly warm and friendly!! Thx Stewart , Hugh and I really enjoyed our week and will be sure to come back !!! Cheri & Hugh

Cottage with more than a view
If you want to visit the western coast of Cape Breton, this Cottage is the perfect place to stay. It is centrally located, peacefull and overlooking the ocean. The full-equipped kitchen made it easy to prepare meals. The owner was better than a tour guide! His generous advice allowed us to discover gems that we would have overlooked otherwise. Many thanks Stewart.

Great Cottage in Cape Breton
Great stay in Cape Breton at a wonderful cottage. Stewart was a great host and gave great insight as how to to spend the week in Cape Breton. His suggestions were spot on. Cottage was perfect for my family and had everything that we needed for a wonderful week. The best beach on the island is only minutes away from your driveway. Could not have asked for a better place to spend the week in Cape Breton.

Peaceful Perfection
Cape cottage had everything we needed. It is not only a perfect location to explore the Margaree and Cape Breton areas, but it was rather difficult to leave each day as the cottage setting alone is breathtaking.
The cottage is stocked with all the essentials and is very comfortable. Upon check in, Stewart spent some time with us to make sure we were set up and had a good idea of what the Margaree area had to offer. Based on his advice we explored much of what the immediate region had to offer and were incredibly happy with what we found.
We can’t wait to come back again.
Thanks for everything Stewart and Belle.

Great and beautiful place.
The cabin was clean and very tastefully decorated and furnished. We enjoyed every second there. Evenings graced us with beautiful and magnificent sunsets over the ocean. It is a very peaceful and quiet place in the forest. Deers were frequent guests there and little patience was rewarded with spotting whales in the ocean and eagles on a rocky outcrop above the water. If somebody enjoys hiking, The Cape Breton Highlands National Park is short drive north along the picturesque road of Cabot Trial which coils breathtakingly between the mountains and the sea. There are also many places worth seeing around Margaree Valley (like Egypt Falls). Our host, Stewart, told us about many attractions and incredible places to eat we would totally miss otherwise (so do yourself a favor and check them out). And last but not least: if you want to bring a piece of this corner of Nova Scotia home, visit Cape Breton Clay (Bell Fraser's unique and wonderful pottery) and see for yourself how miracles are made.
On more prosaic side: if you follow Stewart's instructions finding the cabin is easy, but try to be there before dark. Checking in and out was a breeze. Our host helped us accommodate there the very next morning and told us everything we would need to know to enjoy our vacation there.

Absolutely Perfect!
I loved everything about “my” cottage (which felt like home as soon as I walked in). The spectacular views, the effortless style, the high ceilings, the cozy stove — and did I mention the views? Stewart was endlessly helpful and gave thoughtful recommendations. Thank you for a wonderful stay: I already long to come back!

Picturesque Place
We had very high expectations for our stay from the beautiful pictures and our expectations were meet in every way. My family thoroughly enjoyed watching the sunset every night from the deck. The cottage itself was charmingly decorated and the kitchen was well stocked, which we appreciated . The cottage is a great home base to explore the island. Stewart is a kind and gracious host. He takes the time to sit down with his guests and go over his top recommendations for the island. He is attentive and thoughtful about his guests needs, while also affording them privacy and space. You won't regret a stay here.

great place
Great property, exactly like pictures. Stewart was very helpful in getting us oriented to the property and area. This property is isolated at the top of the hill. If you are looking to be closer to the road/beach I think he has other options. For us, this was nice and secluded - surrounded be trees and water views.

The photos don't lie
A memorable stay in a location both peaceful and dramatic.
Just lovely, a great place to base your drive on the Cabot Trail or write that novel you've been meaning to get to.
The only thing I would change is the separation between the bedrooms: right now the walls don't come all the way to the roof, so you have visual privacy only.

Our Second Visit: Even Better Than the First!
This was our second time staying at Cape Cottage and we loved it even more on our second visit.
The views of the ocean are so beautiful and the sunsets so dramatic that we found ourselves scurrying back from each day’s adventure to make sure that we were on the deck to watch the sunset, which never disappoints. The cottage’s setting is private and quiet, so peaceful, that it made us feel it was just us, the ocean, and the stars.
The cottage was very clean and had comfortable furnishings and bed. We also loved the style of the cottage’s interior, with white-washed wooden walls, very high ceilings, and huge windows, which demanded that you constantly look out at the ocean and trees. Everything one would need to spend a delightful week was included.
Stewart met with us and gave us great tips on restaurants, hiking trails, and many other interesting things to see and do. He is very responsive in answering all questions, whether about the Cottage or about Cape Breton in general.
We loved our stay at the Cape Cottage.

Heavenly cottage
This was our second year to spend a week in beautiful Chimney Corners.
The cottage is picture perfect, wonderfully equipped, and well managed
by the Applegath family. We could not have asked for a better week's
vacation and look forward to returning next year.

This experience was quite amazing for us. Imagine being the first family to initiate a newly built cottage. When we walked through the doors, we honestly wanted to pinch ourselves. The views and the sunset’s from the cottage are spectacular, and we are not exaggerating! What you see in the photographs is what you get. The property overlooks Chimney Corner and its cove: cliffs, forests, bald eagles, and the sea with pilot whales and the occasional boat.
Being a brand new cottage, it is obviously very clean, but we were most taken by the architecture, openness of the space and quality of light that filled the rooms. The kitchen makes it very convenient to enjoy meals “at home” which we made several times. There is even a grill outside on the back deck to enjoy as the sun is setting. The beds are comfortable and the heated floors in the bathroom are an unexpected luxury.
Stewart and Belle have an incredible attention to detail and had made every effort to make us feel comfortable and at home. Stewart is also a great host and sat down with us on one of the first evenings, providing numerous suggestions for places to hike, eat, shop and to see. We encourage you to take advantage of his recommendations as all the ones we tried were spot on.
We highly recommend anyone to embrace the tranquility, beauty and solitude of this cottage and very special place. We had an awesome time!
