About this cottage rental
Most magical spot on the north coast of the Kaipara Harbour. Batley is secluded and peaceful. It offers walks, safe swimming, fishing and views. Great for couples, solos, families (roll out bed, space for a tent). Kitchen facilities and hot-water shower. Fish from the beach or boat - ramp nearby and space to park your boat or kayak - use our double kayak.
Along with historic Batley House - and us - nearby, you'll be on a peninsula on a 1000-acre sheep and beef farm in NORTHLAND region. Less than two hours from Auckland and 20 mins from Maungaturoto.
We believe our house is the oldest on the harbour. You'll be protected from the prevailing wind and the cabin includes everything for your stay - kitchen equipment, fridge, cooking facilities, gas-heated shower. NOTE: It's glamping with a kiwi bach vibe and use of the nearby (50m - pale green building in the pix - meticulous public toilet.
Fish off the beach or nearby point and there's a boat launching ramp. The harbour's a snapper hatchery - we rarely come home without a feed.
Negotiable: tent for extra guests.
The area is rich with history - the house, built in stages from 1866, was a store, post office and boarding house. There were fish factories and a flour mill here. You can walk upriver to a marae and historic church. Rae's book, 'Love at the End of the Road' (a copy's in the cabin) tells the area's story. You may have seen us on Country Calendar.
AND..... you need to know . . . .
Cellphone coverage is patchy. Wifi - you may need to come up to the house.
Linen provided.
Separate shower with gas hot water.
TOILETS: Spotlessly clean public toilets nearby - 50m (think glamping).
Batley is about an hour and 40 minutes from Auckland, 30 minutes from the Brynderwyn intersection on SH1, 18km/20 mins from Maungaturoto (similar to Paparoa), and about an hour from Whangarei, Dargarville and Warkworth.
Special conditions:
Fold out bed for child or extra adult. Tent/campervan okay with prior approval. Rates to be advised at that time.
Any questions or queries - please just ask.
Please: When you book, please tell us a bit about you and your holiday.
Extras: Linen (included); NOTE: Under Kiwi bach traditions, you are expected to: Clean the house and do the dishes before you leave.

Rae & Rex’s place is more than lodging, it’s a destination. The best way to enjoy the cabin is to have a minimum of two nights. You need at least one day to explore the area - hike, swim, kayak, relax. Unfortunately, because of our evening arrival, we didn’t have the time to do anything but sleep. We loved chatting with Rae and Rex. They were a big help with trip planning as they were aware of some road closures that we didn’t know about. They actually designed a route for us to ensure we made the best use of our time!

Great cabin; it is more spacious than it looks in the photos. It was warm even though it was a cold night. The bed is really comfortable. Nice spot right near the water. Good for anyone wanting to go fishing.

Lovely views and warm bach
Awesome harbour view, bach is warm and complete with basic needs. The shore is awesome, will definitely come back but best on summer. Surprisingly the batch is warm though been raining. The hosts are welcoming. The Batley House is a gem! Happy to have seen it up close!
Thanks Rae and Rex for letting us in your bach.

Our hideaway
Our 3rd visit and we loved it as always.

Peaceful and simple
A great place to retract from the busy world around you. Get of the tech and read books and papers, play cards, eat and sleep. Two nice walks either side of the property. If in winter would bring an umbrella and torch to get to and from toilet. Could do with a mozzie screen so you can let fresh air in during the night. Other then that is golden for what you pay. We kept to ourselves and appreciated the privacy given by Ray. The Kauri museum is 100 percent worth the visit. Loved our five days and relaxing and rewinding. Thanks Tessa and Jon

Idyllic Escape
We had a most enjoyable three night stay in Rex and Rae’s cosy cabin nestled between the historical Batley House and the foreshore of Kaipara Harbour. Add to that the magnificent undulating countryside, stunning sunrise and stars at night you have the recipe for that perfect getaway. Rex and Rae are such warm and welcoming hosts a return visit is a must.

Winter break
Expensive considering facilities.
Nice area with lots of history, down a long gravel road. Associated book interesting.
The [public] toilet is more than 50metres away, no hand towels or lights, bird poop throughout.

Kaipara hospitality.
We came looking for the perfect getaway, just the dad's and kids. We found it. The location was fantastic but best of all was the generous hospitality down by Rae and Rex. We had a lovely time, one the kids will never forget. Thank you very much to Rae and Rex.

A step back in time
Staying at Batley was like returning to the wonderful holidays of my childhood. A snug little bach in a stunning setting, cooking outside on a barbecue and a walk to the toilet, swimming every day, great walks, friendly neighbours who gave us fresh fish and NZ as I think it used to be.

Paradise Found
Rae and Rex are consummate hosts; considerate and welcoming.
Everything you could want is all here.
A comfortable night's sleep in a charming, well-appointed cabin.
Fishing, swimming, walking, chilling, reading, snoozing.
The locality oozes charm, beauty, history and the most-amazing sunrises added in for free.
Part of me does not want to sing its praises too loudly because its semi-isolation, dusty corrugated road and lack of crowds adds to its immense appeal.
If you are unable to find yourself relaxed, content, happy and chilled in this Batley cabin then, well ......
And I had the best snapper meal ever.
Thanks Rex and Rae.
