Location
I am completely appalled by Casa del Refugio and I would discourage anyone from even considering staying here. I have traveled to over 70 countries in the world and have been an avid world traveler for over 30 years. And this has been my WORST experience with a hotel EVER.
I traveled here with my husband and 2 small kids in February. The place has no heat. So we had to sleep with our full parkas and hats on and we were STILL freezing. It was also extremely noisy since there's no real insulation... and the noise from the street was extreme through the night including street vendors and dogs barking at all hours. We barely slept.
So instead of staying 2 nights, we were running for the door after one night.
And then.. the hotel somehow charged us over US$3000 for that one night we stayed there. I think it was originally an unintentional error. Instead of charging us in pesos, they put in the same figure in dollars. Except that the exchange rate was around 19 pesos per dollar. So instead of being charged around US$170, they charged us thousands of dollars.
I've been working for MONTHS with Bookings.com and also directly with the hotel to try to get a refund. I've spoken with management at the hotel who were apologetic and said they would refund our money right away. But they have still not issued a refund and it's been about 8 months. Bookings.com has contacted them multiple times as well, and they have told them they would issue a refund. But they haven't done it. It seems they just want to steal our money.
It's deeply distressing.
I would do whatever you can to AVOID staying at all costs and let others know as well.

The hotel was very clean, the staff was always friendly, the views from room 1 and 2 are awesome and the food from the restaurant is very tasty and authentic.
Everything was exceptionally good.

Rooms are large but very old fashioned. They are above a very noisy square. No a/c and shutters must be closed due to noise so it was stuffy and hot. The public areas are charming. The front desk staff very accomodating.
The restaurant for breakfast underwhelmed us. Only 2 tables occupied and it took more than 30 minutes to get cold coffee to our table. We gave up. Ate elsewhere.
Beds were not great.

Beautiful hotel in a very central location! The staff was very helpful and we had a large bedroom with sitting area.
The street noise was loud right outside our windows, even on the second floor. also the mornings were cold and there was no heat in the hotel and no space heater for the room. We loved the fire in the dining room fireplace which was lit for breakfast.

Staff was very helpful but no staff after 9:00 in the evening. Very charming interior and great location. Room very clean
Outside room was like sleeping on the freeway. Worse night ever. No electric. No lights no internet. No one to help us. Never slept. Thank goodness staff changes our room. But for $1;000 for three nights and two rooms…it was unbearable. Don’t eat breakfast here, service was beyond bad and food was cold
