About this house rental
Near the top of the hill in Calera Canyon, the sweeping panoramic views of golden live-oak studded hillsides will lull you into a tranquil sense of ease, fulfillment and well-being. Expansive redwood deck, comfortable living room with floor length canyon views. The bedrooms are 18' x 24' with spacious double closets. Soak up the sunniest part of the Monterey Peninsula while you gaze across John Steinbeck's fabled Pastures of Heaven. You have a private entrance and private use of the entire separate lower level of home.
Constant sunshine, pastoral ambiance, fascinating wildlife, on a three acre nature-scaped mountainside parcel and forever views that inspire and rejuvenate the soul. There is a large fridge with filtered water and ice, sink, microwave, tea/coffee and self-serve oatmeal/cereal bars but no full kitchen or stove/oven cooking facilities.
Hosts live in the upstairs unit on the property. Both hosts work in downtown Monterey.
Carmel Valley is the sunniest part of the Monterey Peninsula and the perfect climate. It has California's best weather with temperatures in the 60°s F to low 70°s nearly all year. Deer, wild turkeys, quail, raccoons and the occasional shy bobcat are all local citizens. Just far enough from town that skies are bright, twinkling and sometimes meteor streaked.
Ample driveway parking but be cautious turning around. Twelve miles from Monterey Airport, just off Corral de Tierra Rd. Within 20 - 30 minutes of downtown Monterey, Pebble Beach, Carmel or Pacific Grove. Carmel Valley, Laguna Seca 10-15 minutes. The start of Big Sur is a little over 30 minutes.

We stayed here for easier access to get to the raceway; however, it was not as close as it seemed due to the canyon roads that this location requires you to drive in order to reach the destination.
The accommodation itself is clean and welcoming, just be careful when entering the side door at night as there are many unexpected steps and I almost face planted (my fault for not using a light).
The two-car parking limit was undisclosed in the description, but it became too late to cancel when I found out. Also, undisclosed is the no smoking on the property rule.
Overall, 4/5. just be aware of the items mentioned above and it will be just fine.

It had everything that the ad had promised. Wish we could have spend more of the day on the lovely terrace. Great little place to get away.

This location was beautiful, so much more than what we were expecting. The facilities were just lovely and very comfortable.

Really nice place and views

The property is just as described. The 2 bedrooms are of good sizes. Very clean. The main attraction is definitely the deck which we enjoyed morning, early evening and late at night for star gazing.

Amazing property tucked up in the hills - a little difficult to get to because of the terrain/location, but Dutch and Carolyn provided very clear instructions. Awesome views, very quiet, incredibly clean and home-y. Would definitely stay here again.

A truly lovely stay in an unique environment. The scenery was spectacular and it was absolutely silent with only the beautiful sound of bird songs.

Lovely home with much more room than I thought there’d be! Super clean and comfy. Close enough to Monterrey and Carmel and down town Salinas.
4.7
Just as listed, this is an excellent property in the foothills. Easy drive to attractions in Monterey and Laguna Seca. Highly recommended.

What a great house in a gorgeous location! The house is nestled at the top of rolling hills overlooking a beautiful valley. Views are absolutely stunning, both evening and morning! The house is perfect for a family or group looking to enjoy Carmel, Big Sur, etc, who would also like to see the hills and valleys surrounding the coast. The house is clean and well appointed; we did not lack for anything. Hosts are very communicative and hospitable. Definitely recommend!

Came to the area with family visiting and had a comfortable stay. All the necessary amenities except for a stove, but we didn’t have a need for one.

Our family of four really enjoyed staying at this property for a Monterey getaway. The home is located in a beautiful valley which we loved looking at each morning and evening. Travel to and from Monterey was short and we were able to fit in the Aquarium, whale watching, restaurants, and a visit to the CSUMB campus.

Place was great. If you have any concern about staying in the lower part of the property, don't. They communicated via VRBO to check in on us and we felt completely private. We were aware of the limited kitchen options but was no problem at all. The first evening we stopped at the Safeway and grabbed heat up meals and some snacks for the deck and the second night we just grabbed to go food and brought it up. Easy and was lovely getting back to the property to sit on the deck and enjoy the view. The coffee and treats in the room were perfect for morning snacks before we got on the road for our day.
4.7
Quiet relaxing getaway with a nice view. Had everything we needed with comfortable beds and a cork screw!
4.7
We had a really nice stay, the property owners live upstairs and were very communicative.
If you are a light sleeper, you can hear them walking around, but overall not an issue.
The view is gorgeous, property was sorta hard to find the first time because it’s super dark and we went at night.

We had a great stay during Spring Break. The weather wasn't optimal so we couldn't enjoy the deck with the beautiful views. Hosts very responsive to any questions or requests.
Our biggest inconvenience (and there was full disclosure on the listing) was the lack of an oven/stove. This could be easily overcome by having a simple hot plate, toaster oven or better yet, access to a grill on the gorgeous deck.
Also, the lack of laundry was a headache for a longer stay. There is a premium pricetag associated with doing a load which we assumed was due to the washer/dryer being in the owner's unit which is understandable. But the laundry facilities are actually in the bottom unit with a sign not to use them which we thought was strange. We've always had full access to laundry at other VRBOs.
Besides those two headaches, we had a very enjoyable stay and the drive, though windy and steep, was very beautiful.

It is a beautiful house to stay at with an amazing view and everything was superb

We had a good visit here, with the big pros being the views of the canyon behind the house, good internet, clean place, very large deck, although we coudn't use it since it rained while we were there. The cons are: remote location, winding narrow roads getting there (no problem if you're used to country roads), minimal amenities (no kitchen, no TV, limited areas to hang out when the weather is bad). I also had a hard time sleeping because I'm a light sleeper and I could hear everything from the owners upstairs (walls are very thin). If you're a light sleeper, I recommend earplugs.

We had a good weekend overall—the bed in the one bedroom where we slept was very comfortable and the location was gorgeous. We had no problem finding it in the dark because of the excellent directions. We were pretty cold down there with just space heaters but then it has been an unseasonably cold winter here. I wouldn’t call the living room comfortable, with just one futon that faces the windows in an awkwardly leaning back position and bungee corded together. We had planned to be there with my mother-in-law, and I’m glad she couldn’t come in the end because we wouldn’t have had anywhere besides the dining table to hang out in the evening. Glad to be able to have our dog there. Thanks!

Amazing views. A real treat! Has everything you need.

The property was easy check in and clean. We traveled with our small children and the location was not family friendly. They had space heaters and no tv. The drive to the property was extremely dreadful with flooded roadways and about a 15ml or more drive up one lane windy road with no lighting. We did not anticipate this at all. There was no lighting when entering at night either. After arriving we booked a hotel closer to the city. There’s no reception at this location either only wifi. The host was friendly but overall it was not what we expected so we did not stay. Also there’s a beautiful balcony with view but no smoking anywhere near property.

Carolyn was very helpful giving detail instructions on locating the property. I advise that you make sure you have food with you because there is nothing close by. The beds were very comfortable and the place was tidy and clean and the view was very pretty. The cons were that she had mentioned in her e-mail to me that there was a fridge located in the garage with ice and filtered water but there were no lights in the garage and when I entered it the door was off the fridge. When I asked about it she told me it wasn't part of the rental but she even had sign posted right over the microwave to let you know that was where the water and ice was located. I was glad that we had stop at the grocery store before coming and did have a few small bottles of water. She did refund me $20 dollars for the inconvenience. In the amenities I believe it mentions breakfast is included which consisted of granola bars and packaged oatmeal. I would suggest if you are staying that you bring something for the morning to eat. Also there is mention of games but there was just cards and a checkerboard set that could be held in the palm of your hand. Since there were no T.V's and we had young children with us I was thinking there would be more games like scrabble, Uno or Yahtzee. I don't know if I would stay again I felt the cost was pricey for what you actually got.

Great place, beautiful location and the owner Carolyn was very responsive! Would definitely stay here again.

Tucked away in the hills, the perfect spot for a nice monterey/caramel weekend.

It’s was an amazing evening with my wife and daughters.. beautiful scenery quiet and very peaceful. Nice 24 hour get away

A beautiful drive in and out of the property, quick, dark skies, stunning views and super clean and comfortable space. Ammenities were top notch. Only about a 15 minute drive from restaurants and convenience shops. Recommend!

It might be a tiny bit confusing to find the place if you do not read the directions from the hosts *carefully* 😊. Other than that, the BnB is an absolutely great place to unwind. We had our lab with us and even he enjoyed it a lot. The BnB has a doggy area with a little bed. Great BnB.

First of all, I did not read the description of the kitchen the owner (Carolyn) gives on the VRBO website, and I had planned to cook food while there. There is no stove, which Carolyn makes very clear in the description, so we had to change our plans. :) My bad!
Once you've booked the property and receive directions from Carolyn, read the directions carefully. Carolyn is very good at communicating the directions, but I did not read the messages very carefully and I had trouble finding the place.
So both problems were my own fault. I'm writing this hoping you can avoid making the same mistakes that I did.
So now for the good stuff: The property is remote and very peaceful. The views are beautiful. The place was clean and neat.
The bedrooms are spacious and the beds are very comfortable. We used the kitchen, the microwave, and the coffee maker and all worked very well. The bathroom was well stocked with everything we needed. The shower has nice water pressure.
The owners live upstairs and we could hear them walking around in the evening but it was not a big deal and made it feel very homey.
The property is very remote and the roads are narrow and windy so the first night I made sure I got there before dark.
We had a great lunch at Toro Place Cafe (on highway 68). The cafe next door to Toro Place (Castle Rock Cafe) has good coffee and pasteries (gluten-free).
I would stay there again.

Although this location has a beautiful view from the deck of the sunset, it is in a very remote valley that can be a challenge to find. Also even though the host said that there were a number of area restaurants that could provide food, we found that none were open past 8 o’clock and ended up buying cold cuts and making sandwiches. I would suggest that you have food packed prior to arriving at this location.

My family rented this house for our trip to Carmel. It was roughly a 35 minute drive from Carmel and had a beautiful deck to relax on in the evenings.
4.7
We really enjoyed our stay! The house has amazing views!
My advice for the future guests is to bring enough food, as the house is in a remote location. You don't want to drive through the mountainous small roads back and forth, especially in the dark.
4.7
Property is exactly as described. Nice to have a deck to enjoy the quiet in the morning

Our plans included a quick getaway for sightseeing in Monterey and along the Big Sur. We also wanted the experience of spending the night in the mountains. On arrival, it was pretty hot in the unit as it was a pretty hot day. We appreciated the fans provided; and at night the temperature cools down. But my only suggestion would be installing ceiling fans in the bedrooms to better improve comfort measures during the hotter times of the year. Other than that, this property gave us everything we needed. The views were amazing. It was clean, peaceful, serene, and accomodating as listed. The hosts were responsive, welcomed us, and let us know they were available for any questions/concerns.

Great location. Amazingly clean, cozy and comfortable. Great views from the relaxing patio. Definitely recommend it.
4.7
Definitely off the beaten track when you stay here. We enjoyed the scenery and the wildlife along with the peace and quiet! The unit was clean and comfortable, just what we were looking for!
4.7
We enjoyed our stay here for a couple of nights during a trip down the coast. Great view of the surrounding mountains and perfect for stargazing. The hosts were very accommodating and supplied us with an extra futon for our young son as wells as breakfast snacks. The house is secluded but Monterey and the surrounding coastal areas were easily accessible.
4.7
The property was exactly as described and ideally located near Laguna Seca raceway. The view from the deck was amazing.

Beautiful Peaceful Getaway
The place was very clean and cared for. My family loved the weather and quiet location with a beautiful view in the mountains. We visited Monterey both days we stayed and it was only a very short drive to our activities. So this was a perfect location. We all truly enjoyed our stay.
