Build a beautiful resort village on a favorite Hatteras Island location, and they will come. The Cottages at the Cape are the closest rental units to the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse in Buxton. They share a long border with the national park and are literally steps from the beachfront. Bring the bikes, because Buxton’s unique shops, restaurants, and lighthouse are all very close. Forget the 4WD vehicle - those in the know have discovered that the three jetties to the east of the cottages produce some of the best fishing, surfing, and swimming on this island. Walking to the south will take you to open beaches, the famed Cape Point, and if luck is on your side during the summer, a few sea turtle nests (be careful to stay outside the barriers). This is an excellent two-bedroom condo with one-and-a-half baths. The interior has been professionally-decorated with comfortable and fun beach décor. You'll have access to an outside shower and a patio, and there are plenty of appliances, counter space, and cabinet storage in the full kitchen. The screened-in porch is ideal for entertaining guests and enjoying your first cup of coffee in the morning. The living room is a great place to enjoy a movie night with friends and family after a fun day on the beach. An escape to the cape never looked so good as at Cottages at the Cape.

We loved this duplex with its private and peaceful screened-in back deck with an unobstructed view of the lighthouse. The home is the perfect size for our little family of three. We didn’t bring our dogs but appreciate that was an option. The beach is a short walk down a quiet street and the house itself is tastefully decorated in its coastal “Turtle” theme. The beds were so comfortable, and pillows were wonderful. The kitchen is stocked with cookware, we needed to cook meals. Note, we brought our own condiments. We had the perfect quiet vacation we were seeking.

Great house. Great location.

The condo was nice and clean. Great views of the ocean and the cape Hatteras lighthouse from the back porch. The ocean is a short 5 minute walk. The lighthouse is a 3 minute drive. However, the pool is in the next town. We assumed it was in the community/neighborhood and could walk to it. We would have to drive to the next town to use the pool. The play area is right next to the condo. We did loose wifi for 9 hours but i wouldnt think thats a common thing. Overall we would definitely stay again.

We had a wonderful few days over Christmas break!! Quiet and just a shirt walk to the ocean!! Pups loved it! Super clean and comfy!

This is our second time in this location through Vacasa. Though not exact on the beach is close enough. Centrally located in Buxton close to everything the area has to offer. So happy they cater to family with dogs. We’ll be back for sure.

we have been coming twice a year since 2021 and wouldn’t stay anywhere else!

It’s a short walk to the beach and it seems to be a relatively quite area. If you don’t like to walk on the beach on the backside of the townhouse is a nice walking area.

We really enjoyed our stay at the Turtle. It’s a nice home with everything that we needed. We enjoyed the stroll to the beach. It’s located at a convenient distance from everything in Hatteras. The biggest issue had nothing to do with the house but with the yard. They sand spurs were terrible and we were constantly picking them out of our dogs feet.

This is the 2nd time we have stayed in these homes. Love them! Clean, roomy, and on the ocean.

Great house, great location. We will book again in the future.

The kitchen leaves a lot the be desired if wanting to cook in. The pots and pans are horrible as previous reviews reported. We planned ahead and brought a couple favorites and a crockpot. There are two blenders, one is broken so be aware prior to adding liquids.
The living room furniture is not comfortable, however being dog friendly I can understand the choice.
The screened in porch was wonderful at all times of day!
Check in and check out was a breeze. Our cleaning ladies were very kind and went above and beyond to allow us in early. This was so appreciated after such a long drive!
The beds were not horrible. It seems they have added a topper, which made a difference.
The view was good and when on the screened porch you can hear the waves. It is a very short and easy walk to the beach. The boardwalk in right next to the house and there is pavement to walk to the beach access. There is a strong rip tide at that particular beach, so please be aware of the wave directions as and indicator.

My family and I stayed for a week. The house is located within sight of the beach, which was perfect. Most of the amenities provided in the house such as washer/dryer, kitchen utensils and general soaps were wonderful. There are some things I would have added but not too much. There was not a pool nearby as listed in description, however, but with the ocean so close that you could hear it from our bedroom, it made up for no pool. The beds and pillows were very comfortable.

The property itself was very nice. It was clean and had apparently been recently remodeled. But the customer support was the worst I’ve ever experienced for a rental like this.
1) None of my pre-stay questions were answered. These included what kind of coffee pot was in the property (grounds or pods) and how I’d get the property entrance code.
2) The check-in instructions that were e-mailed to me didn’t include the code for getting into the property. I responded to the host’s text three times asking for that code and instead they kept re-sending the exact same e-mail despite my saying it didn’t contain the code.
3) When I called the property manager, they gave me the ‘emergency code’ since they didn’t seem to be able to find the regular one. When I tried to open the door it didn’t appear to work, but when I called the property manager back, no one answered the phone despite them saying that the number was answered 24-hrs a day.
4) I finally figured out that the door had swollen so it need to be pulled toward you so that the bolt could retract. Understandable on the coast, but THAT would have been nice to include in the check-in instructions.
5) When we got into the property, the internet wasn’t working so none of the televisions or our own devices would connect. This was reported to the customer service representative who eventually called me back.
6) The next day when the technician showed up to fix the internet they were given the address for the property next door! So, seeing it under renovation, the technician left and was unable to return until the next day.
This was my first attempt at using VRBO and it is likely the last.

Very comfortable, it has all the necessary comforts for a good vacation, located in a very good point near the shops and the beach, we went to ramp 44, to fish and it was close to the house. We had a good vacation, the house was clean, but my only complaint is that the shower curtain needs to be changed for a new one, but overall for the rental value it was really worth it.

Screen missing in porch. Mattresses with sunk holes and n AC on main floor were the big faults . The place was clean but the towels were cheap . They also cancelled our 4 star place to give us a 2 star and then we saw people move into our old place. Whats with that? We booked a year out. Not good

We stayed in the place next door last year.
We were cautiously optimistic when we found out the home had been sold, but from all appearances nothing has been done to improve the place. Many sketchy “repairs.”
Kitchen pitifully stocked with plates and few basic implements.
Laughing to see how the price for the same week next year has increased by $1,000!

Great Vacation
the property managers, (Vacasa), was super to work with. We had a couple issues and they were there to help us out each time!!! The house was a little dated, but perfect for our needs. Cleanliness was lacking, but it wasn't anything that we couldn't "wipe down", or overlook. thanks for the wonderful vacation!

Nice vacation rental
We rented the Turtle for a family vacation and had a great time. The location is amazing, very quick walk to the beach and cool views of the lighthouse! We spent lots of time on the screened in back deck which had nice beach views. The condo itself is quite spacious but a little dated and sterile feeling and could use some cosmetic updates (i.e., new blinds, hole in wall of the upstairs bathroom). Overall a great place to spend a vacation, we had a wonderful time.

Looks like it’s seen some frat parties
Very minimal furnishings. I understand it is a beach house but the little things that make is seem like home. Like having a small trash can in each room and in the laundry room, or at least a picture in the bedrooms. This house looks like a college rental with bare bones and it has quite a bit of wear and tear that make it look like there have been a few frat parties in here. There were several of the blinds missing slats, and some are bent. Most of them do not properly fit the window and are too short. It looks cheap. There is water damage in the ceilings in a few places. A nice size hole in the bathroom where it looks like there was a towel rack at some time., as well as a random divot in the wall. There is missing trim from one of the kitchen cabinets. The lamp shades are fabric and quite dusty. The dangling front plate on the toaster oven that just looks tacky. The lock is loose and you have to jiggle the key just right to get the door to unlock. This is advertised as a “beautiful resort village”. No. Take this rental out of the listings for a little while and tend to things like the water damage and holes in the walls, get rid of the ratty blinds and fix the lock.

Not as nice as advertised, needs a lot of attention
Nothing special about this place, mattresses in desperate need of replacing. Entire place could use some attention.

worked very well for us. It has seen lots of wear and tear but was very clean. Kitchen needs more utensils. Over all was pleased with the property.

Best views
You can see Cape Hatteras Light and the beach from master bedroom and the back deck. Short walk to the beach and an easy 3/4 to 1 mile walk to the lighthouse.

We booked late for Labor Day weekend, so there were very few options. But this home was available with a good location, so we took advantage. Good location with just a short walk to the beach. Also, some good grass areas to walk your dog.Home definitely has lots of needs for improvement and is bare bones everywhere it can be...but if you are looking to spending time at the beach, have pets and on a budget, this place will work.
