About this house rental
Who's ready to go skiing?! The Brown Bear Chalet is the perfect spot for your next ski vacation.
The Brown Bear Chalet comfortably accommodates up to 15 guests with 5 bedrooms and 4.5 baths, and that's just the beginning. The home features two spacious living areas, both fantastic for gathering with one stocked with games to add to your fun! Both living rooms also feature comfy couches and flat-panel Smart TVs. The main level houses a half bath and two queen bedrooms that share a joined full bath with a walk-in shower. The generous kitchen has plenty of room for multiple cooks in the kitchen, the bartender in your group can man the wet bar, the two-sided fireplace adjoining the living and dining rooms keeps the whole area nice and cozy, the dining table and kitchen island allow for seating for 12. The large dining table can also double a game table if your group decides on a game night. The kitchen is fully stocked with a gas stove, microwave, large refrigerator, cookware, utensils, and a drip coffee pot.
The bedrooms are nothing short of amazing. Brown Bear Chalet features two master suites. The main master suite, known as the Fireplace Master Suite, is located on the second floor in the main portion of the home and houses a king bed, ample floor space, fireplace, and large master bath with double vanity, jetted tub, and a full washer/dryer tucked inside a closet. The Castaway Suite is a secluded master suite located above the garage and hosts a king bed, views of the mountain, and a full bath.
At Brown Bear Chalet, the kids have their own space. Located in the basement, the Bunkroom sleeps seven with room to spare. A sliding glass door steps out onto a seasonal (summer only) patio to enjoy some fresh air. A full bathroom and full washer/dryer are also in the basement so they can just leave all their smelly clothes in the basement, thereby keeping the main level blissfully clean during your stay. The Gameroom happens to be conveniently located in the Bunkroom. Kids (and adult kids!) can enjoy a foosball table, smartTV with DVD and a few family-friendly movies, board games, puzzles, Nintendo Wii with several games, and indoor basketball.
Additional amenities include an outdoor grill with propane included and a large six-person hot tub and spacious deck overlooking the slopes. The home is perfectly situated to provide amazing views as well as give you access to the Elk Highlands Lift*. You're also just a two-minute drive to the Base Lodge, the five-star Cafe Kandahar restaurant, and also the Ski Village where you'll find a small market, ski rentals, and resort restaurants like The Bierstube and Ed & Mully's.

The location was perfect and the basement was a kid's dream. We had the best time at Brown Bear Chalet and can't wait to stay again in the winter.

Property needs some attention to detail such as several light bulbs burnt out, mouse, and vanity lights not working.

Very nice, well maintained mountain home as described in the listing details.
Hits: enough space for our group of 13, huckleberry bushes in the yard, hot tub, a/c units in the main floor living room and both upstairs bedrooms, easy check-in and checkout.
Misses: upstairs bedrooms need more window coverings. There is less than 7hrs of full darkness in peak summer. Downstairs sliding door needs new blinds.

Information on how to get to the catwalk would have been helpful.
Hot tub was drained and on yet not really clean. Would suggest cleaning before refilling

The property was great but we had a hard time getting a hold of someone after texting and leaving multiple voicemails. There was no propane when we arrived. We did finally get refills a few days later. Also, as I texted multiple times, there were definitely mice in the upstairs bathrooms so you may want to check on those.

We rented this house (and 1 other from this company) for our elopement. We had around 30 people, all from out of state, and these two houses together were great for our group. Plenty of space to hang out, have meals together, cook, get ready for the wedding, take some neat pictures, and still have some space to share. Between table games, a hot tub, and small appliances, the house had everything we needed! The location is one of the best parts. It's on the mountain a little ways out of town to provide privacy and the feeling of being in Montana, but not too far outside of Whitefish either.

Came into town for the Under the Big Sky concert. The property was a great! We had 14 adults and there was plenty of space for everyone! The location of the property was perfect. We were able to catch the mountain shuttle down to the venue which was very convenient and within walking distance from the property. Will definitely be rebooking.

House was well represented by pics. Great location and very functional and comfortable for my family. We experienced a few minor repair issues but everything was immediately addressed.

The house was in good condition and had all the necessary amenities. The location is right near Big Mountain with plenty of hiking and biking trails. Its only a short drive to downtown Whitefish and about 45min-1hr from Glacier. The house was good for our two families with small children, with multiple gathering areas. The hot tub is a nice addition as well. The walls in the master bedroom were a little thin, so it wasn't perfect for a baby unless the rest of the house was quiet. Overall the house was good for families.

Nice property and beautiful area! Our group was pleased with the stay. The hot tub was awesome!

Great location, fabulous space for everyone. Hot tub on the balcony was a great touch. Plenty of information available if you’re looking for things to do while in whitefish. All the home touches you would expect and more. Excellent space for the kids downstairs! The house was beautiful and clean, however previous guests had left quite a bit of rubbish in the yard around the property. We picked this up before we left. Perhaps it had previously been buried in the snow and not seen by cleaners.
We would 100% stay again.

Fabulous place! Great view! Had everything including selection of spices for cooking up big meals. BBQ was solid for making great steaks and hot tub was great with an amazing view. Even had some card games like monopoly deal and ping pong balls to boot. Ski in / ski out is a tiny walk to eventually jump on home again. would not hesitate to rent again as we made some great memories in this amazing home of the owners. Fabulous!

The house was beautiful. Big and roomy with a great layout. Sleeping arrangements were good for our group and beds and pillows were comfy.. Double attached garage worked awesome for all our gear. Hottub was great and had an amazing view. Only thing i could say negatively about the place is that it is not a true Ski in/Ski out in my mind. It required walking and vehicles for our group. Overall the place was great. It had all the amenities and creature comforts a group needs. Thanks for the memories!

3 families came together for a weekend together! We cooked, we relaxed and we explored the area. The house layout and size was perfect for our needs and located appropriately to spend time at the mountain and in town. The kitchen was well stocked, beds were comfortable and hot tub was warm. We couldn't ask for much more.

We had a full group of us staying in this beautiful home! There was more then enough sleeping spaces and room for cooking together. We enjoyed the games downstairs & of course the hot tub!
My group of friends and myself already talked about booking again in the near future!!
Thank you!

The outside looks a little dated but this place is solid. Lots of space and a great layout

The location was beautiful, the house was delightful, communication was great with the host. Everyone enjoyed the house. We were there during the hottest part of summer and it was a little warm at times. The individual room units did help. Normally the mountain air would be enough. Other than that, the house was perfect for our group of 15.

Wonderful summer visit to Whitefish
The house is great! Spotlessly clean, up to date, and well maintained. Beds are very comfortable, and the downstairs bunk room was perfect for the 4 cousins in our family group. Kitchen is beautiful and amazingly well equipped - we recommend you check out the kitchen before grocery shopping for your stay - there were lots of (unopened) condiments, plenty of paper towels, etc. kitchen is filled with beautiful light in the morning with deer right outside the windows. Here are a few suggestions, especially related to a summer visit:
1. The sun comes up at 5am. Most of the rooms have blackout shades, except the room over the garage. It is VERY bright starting around 5-5:30 so be aware when deciding what room to sleep in!!
2. The den/gathering room feels smaller than represented in photos. We were an extended family of 10 and the only place we could all comfortably gather was in kitchen/dining area, or basement.
3. For a house that sleeps up to 15, it would be nice to have more than 4 chairs on the deck. Summer evenings are perfect to relax on the beautiful deck, but not enough seating.
It’s a great house in a terrific area. We highly recommend it.

Very Pleased with our Stay!
We had 5 families and it was so nice to be able to gather for meals, games, etc and it was also nice to have separate rooms for each family. The kitchen was stocked with everything needed and having laundry facilities was nice. We texted a couple of times and the response was immediate. I would recommend the home! Very pleased!

Brown Bear- Whitefish - walk uphill to get to trails
The house is located downhill from one of the connecting trails. If there is snow on the street- you could ski down from the trail, but you must walk up to the trail.
We had multiple issues - some were easy fixes- such as providing a can opener- other issues were not so easy .
1) hot tub was not usable until Thursday night - filthy tub had to be drained and cleaned.
2) they should shovel the deck- as you can't smoke indoors and we had cigar smokers who would have used the lawn chairs -but they were buried under 2 ft of packed snow. The snow should be removed when they shovel the driveway.
3) the heater underperforms in the basement. no thermostat downstairs . those that slept in the basement were very cold- especially when using the bathroom downstairs.
all in all- the property was nice. But the location was not a ski in/ ski out property which impacted us. We were assured by the agent that this property was "truly a ski,ski out luxury property".
so if you are coming in the summer. or are willing to walk uphill to get to a ski trail- it works.

Look carefully- The house description is a little “generous”
A picture is worth 1000 words. Look carefully at the pictures. The written description is a little generous for what the house actually looks like in person.
Despite the description, this is not “truly” a ski in ski out house. The trail is close by, but getting to it requires an up hill walk and in reality the “ski out” portion is more “off trail“ to get to the lift. The ski in part is potentially accurate as the slope is downhill, but you have to ski on the road. The roads are plowed on a regular basis so there is not much to ski on other than the blacktop or frozen snow, ice and pebbles. The idea of coming in for lunch or to take a break it's not realistic if you expect to ski out again in the afternoon.
The hot tub was disgusting. We arrived on Saturday and they didn't get it serviced completely until two calls and two people later, as well as a complete draining. Obviously it took another full day to heat back up. The deck with the hot tub had not been shoveled for many snowfalls and I spent 45 minutes chipping ice off the deck in order to make a walkway. There may be a grill, but it too was under snow as well as all of the chairs. As far as a gourmet kitchen goes, it's hard to describe it that way especially when we had to request a can opener twice.
Beware of the lack of sound proofing. In the upstairs master, one wall is this side of the vaulted ceiling of the kitchen. I could hear every footstep, drip from the coffee maker and conversation. If the people sleeping in the master aren't the first ones up, they'll certainly be the second!

Great Long Weekend Ski Getaway
Great place for a ski trip at Whitefish Mountain. Easy ski-in / ski-out access, clean and well equipped home. Great views of the mountain from the hot tub and wonderful amenities for a group or family vacation.

Fantastic House
A well appointed house that easily housed our group. Lots of space for everyone to spread out as well as get together in the evenings, and a true ski-in/ski-out (conditions allowing) from Elk Highlands. We definitely plan to be back!

Brown bear chalet
We loved our stay. Everything was excellent. Suggestions for the house are: needs sponges or scrubbers for the kitchen… and needs to have a couple really big oversized bowls for prepping food for large groups. Other than that all was great!

Great location, Great Spaces!
We loved this house and our visit was really nice! The hot tub right off the living room was awesome after a long day of skiing and had an amazing view, we loved the fireplace, lots of storage/hanging space for skis/gear and the bathroom to room ratio was perfect for our group. The only downsides we found were the sheets in the downstairs area were very plastic-feeling and we could not find a can opener anywhere (so overall, nothing major!).

Great Layout and Location, but Dated
House has a great layout and plenty of room. However, the property is a bit dated. The comments about the condition of the deck were accurate. It is in horrible condition and the peeling paint sticks to your feet as you get into the hot tub. Kitchen supplies are also not newer - they are showing their age, and some I did not want to use because of that. Finally, the house does not have central air, but window units. Not good for families with allergies/asthma. The window units just could not keep up to keep the temperature steady. Also, if you are going, I recommend bringing your own handsoap and all toiletries. The house is likely better suited for winter travel/skiing.
