SOIL Setoda is a beautiful and efficient little hotel that is connected to an associated cafe and bike rental. The building is modern and incredibly comfortable too! The staff are helpful and sociable, the cafe has excellent atmosphere and coffee, and the port is less than two minutes away.
The hotel is generally small, however, this is compensated for by efficient design. Moreover, I believe SOIL Setoda has an expansion planned for those who prefer a larger and more private room. For student travellers dinner and bike rental is comparatively expensive to other services available in Setoda.

When cycling I came across this hotel and made a spontaneous reservation for the next night. It was incredible to arrive after a day of cycling, leave my things in the beautiful and thoughtfully designed room, have a shower, go to the onsen next to it, and be on the rooftop just when the sun was going down; before ending the day with a special dinner in the same building. In the morning before taking the ferry back to the mainland I had a traditional Japanese breakfast with a nice coffee. The staff was incredibly warm and welcoming. I highly recommend stopping here when cycling and staying for a night or two!

The staff is friendly and helpful, the room was simple and beautiful. We had everything we needed for a very comfortable stay.
The location, right on the water and near restaurants and shopping, is ideal!
We had no issues whatsoever.

The design of the hotel.
A bit difficult to locate it as there seemed to be no signage around.

This was the most wonderful place to stay in such a beautiful part of Japan. Unlikely many guests who stay for 1 or 2 nights as the ride through, we stayed for 8 nights with our 2 sons and it was just the reset we needed at the midpoint of a 3 month journey.
Waking up to the view of the water each morning was incredible. The design of the spaces and buildings is well thought out and beautiful executed. The staff across all of the parts of the business (accommodation, restaurant, coffee, store) were all incredibly friendly and welcoming. You can tell that they are all passionate, and they often went out of their way to make sure we were comfortable.
Although they are shared faciilities in the main accommodation building, the design is well considered and the staff kept them very clean and tidy. We enjoyed the opportunity for casual conversations with others as we bumped into them in the hall going to/from the bathroom.
The location is also just perfect, and you can explore everywhere on foot, bike or ferry.
I cannot recommend Soil Setoda highly enough. I can't wait to go back again one day.
Unfortunately the beds were uncomfortable.

Beautiful space and well sound-proofed. Awesome location--great for arriving by bike, boat, or car. Perfect mid point on the cycle road with enough to see and do in the small town for one night. Bath over the road was super nice and showers in the facility were also good. Nice towels!
Breakfast was pretty good but and well-priced but a little underwhelming. Not heaps of room ot hang stuff up unless you use the barrier things along the window.

This is a such a special little corner of the world. So much car has been put into the design to accentuate the place it is located in. Phenomenal.
The bed was springy and uncomfortable.

We stayed here for one night after half a day of cycling from Onomichi. The room with the sea view was so serene and beautiful. The cafe area and the restaurant below were also good and served good food. Ferry port and information center for leaving bikes were walking distance.
The check-in time is 16:00 - this is usually 15:00 for most hotels in Japan and I would have preferred getting into my room early after an exhausting day of cycling!

The location was beautiful, the room sparse, comfortable and clean. The restaurant downstairs was a great treat, with a lovely sunset view and delicious food! It's a great halfway overnight stop on the Shimanami Kaido bike path, or you can take a ferry from Onomichi. For bikers, there is also a bike repair/exchange in town!
I would have liked the restaurant downstairs to be open into the afternoon. It was closing to get ready for dinner just as we got there, but they did serve us two quick beers! And dinner was wonderful.

4.3
A beautiful location and a beautiful view from our room across the water. The food here is amazing! I highly recommend booking a table to eat dinner downstairs in the restaurant. We ended up back downstairs for breakfast too. The coffee was the best I found over three weeks travelling around Japan.

Fresh new and clean
Expensive for fairly basic accommodation

The room was nice. Nice view from guest house. Room had balcony could sit on and relax.
Nice area its in. Very close to restaurants. Although we were there on Wed and most were closed including the one at SOIL.
There reception doesn't open until 9am. So left key in room on checkout. Breakfast set Japanese was not really good value for money. Coffee was extra which was a bit rich.

The view is breathe taking, the staff are friendly and the local bath house is modern and beautiful.

It is along the cycling route. The room has a nice sea view and it is spacious. Staff is very helpful .

Beautiful room with a stunning view
Bed was very uncomfortable (you could feel the springs)

Well designed and beautiful hotel/restaurant. Great option to stay in their “capsule”-style room. Very comfortable and cozy. Food was outstanding and they were very able to accommodate for one in our party with celiac disease. Perfect location in Setoda, next to port and an incredible onsen.
Nothing really.
4.3
The view of the harbor from the room was relaxing and the staff was very friendly.
Would be nice to have a private bathroom, but there's a sento bath house a few minutes walk away.
4.3
The room was more spacious than I thought it would be, and the facilities were very clean and comfortable. We made use of the free pass to the public onsen (yubune) provided at check-in and it was a very nice touch for them to have prepared towels in a bag for us to take to the onsen. The rooms were in a loft above a cafe so you could hear some noise at night and in the morning but it didn’t bother us.
4.3
Perfect for cyclists doing the Shimanami Kaido. Best coffee I had in Japan.
