NEVER BEEN TO WATAUGA LAKE?
Watauga Lake is an extremely beautiful and clean recreational lake (3rd cleanest in the country) located in the Cherokee National forest with 105 miles of shoreline. More than half of the lake is mountainous national forest and cannot be developed, so its really naturally beautiful and not crazy overpopulated with boats. This hidden gem is known to be one of the most beautiful lakes on the east coast. Watauga lake is great for boating, jet-skiing, tubing, skiing/wakeboarding, fishing, swimming, kayaking etc.
Downstream of the dam is a very popular whitewater rafting area as most of the local companies in TN and NC bring their patrons here. Hiking is also very popular as the Appalachain trail and a couple of small waterfalls are nearby. This property is also close to attractions in Boone, Banner Elk and Blowing Rock, NC and also attractions in eastern TN.
We have great sunny summers with no mosquitoes and beautiful fall colors when the leaves change. In the winter time, skiing is a popular option at nearby Sugar and Beech Mountain. This is a spectacular mountain and lake getaway.

What a great week! The house was the cleanest pet friendly house we have ever stayed in. The host was extremely helpful making sure we had everything we needed. There were plenty of cozy blankets and the beds are super comfy! We enjoyed our stay so much, we extended our visit an extra day! We would highly recommend this house to anyone wanting to come and enjoy the lake. We would absolutely rent this house again.

We booked the cabin for my family of 5 for Thanksgiving! We cooked an entire Thanksgiving dinner and the kitchen had everything we needed! The host was so awesome. Great communication and even surprised us with some Thanksgiving decorations to make our stay fun! The cabin was very clean and just as described. The views were amazing. While remote and off the beaten path, there are two wineries close and you are an easy drive to Boone and Blowing Rock. We had a great time and will be back to enjoy the dock and lake when it’s warmer. Excellent property!

The home was clean and well stocked. A bit smaller than pics present, but cozy. Way too many stairs though. They are small, narrow, and sloping, quite hazardous and fatiguing after a few. Probably not a fit for middle aged to older folks, as there are many inside and outside. By the end of our stay, the sunroom was filled with ladybugs. Not bad when it comes to insects, but pest control needed. We could tell no one had come in awhile to blow off the leaves, as the decks were all blanketed, but I suspect they come back quickly this time of year. As someone else wrote, guests should try to come to the home during daylight, as it’s a bit hard to find, and gps is needed. Also, groceries, food, and gas are at least a 40 minute drive, so either bring some with you, or stop on your way. There is a very cute Mercantile 2 miles up the road, which has food and some groceries, but they close at 2:30. There is a beautiful vineyard up the road, but we didn’t visit this time. Lake is beautiful, and the fall leaves were gorgeous! We drove our motorcycle a couple times during our stay, and the ride was great!! We also went to the Cherokee shooting range, and that was fun. The park was beautiful, being on the lake, and the boat ramps were very busy! Even with the new Starlink, reception was a bit slow and in and out, but we made do.
All in all, we enjoyed our stay here, and we appreciated the clean home.

While there is a lot to like about this house, there are also some issues renters should be aware of...firstly, although the photos do not show it, there is another dock with an upper sitting deck/dive platform some 30-40 feet to the left of the properties dock...sadly the weekend we were there the neighbor had 20+ high school (or college) kids staying there, and the noise was omnipresent and inescapable...(I know this is beyond the owners control), but it was a major issue and the close proximity of the neighboring dock should be noted/shown...
the bigger issue I would consider prior to renting here is the stairs down from the parking spot to the front door are VERY steep and narrow, with shallow steps...it makes loading luggage, coolers etc. difficult and potentially dangerous (I slipped twice)...anyone older or with any mobility issues would be very hard pressed to negotiate these stairs...the rest of the stairs down to the lake seemed reasonably okay, but the front ones were challenging, and sadly they're the ones you use while loaded down with stuff...we didn't take a picture of them, but one should definitely be included in the listing for reference...if you stay here, be prepared to struggle getting your luggage etc. safely down to the house...it would likely be quite dangerous in the dark...
the house itself is nice and comfortable, and the dock was pleasant enough when the neighbors weren't there...but for us at least it proved to be the wrong house to stay in....

We had a great time at the house. Everything was clean and ready to go at time of check in. House was perfect for 2 adults, 2 kids and 2 dogs. Beds were comfy! We rented a pontoon boat for 3 days and the dock is perfect size to tie it up in. Dock is in a very quiet cove and the kids loved the lily pad and kayak. Enjoyed the fire pit as well and it was nice that I didn't have to go gather wood, just pushed the button and it was on. Fishing off the dock is good as well, lots of smaller blue gill and sunnies along with a very large 5lb large mouth bass. Would highly recommend this house for anyone looking for a nice cozy quiet place to relax. Owner was great to work with and answered all our questions very fast. Stairs could be a challenge for older folks but we had no problem going up and down them about 3-4 times per day.

My wife and I stayed here over the weekend and it was everything we hoped it would be. We rented a boat per the recommendation and went hiking and fished most the weekend. We will definitely be back. 10/10 👍

Beautiful
As 4 college kids people didn’t expect us to come to butler but we all have an appreciation for mountains and water and beautiful views and this property captured it beautifully the house was beautiful with a tv in the living room and one in the king room upstairs it had everything you needed to enjoy inside and out the dock was perfect for fishing and just hanging out we did jump in on march 15 just for fun and it was freezing as expected but jenelle was a wonderful host who helped us Oklahomans through the mountains of Tennessee we all agreed if we could stay forever we would

Great Relaxing Spot on the Lake
It’s a little out of the way, but it’s a beautiful property. Very secluded and very peaceful with nice views of the lake. The inside of the house is also very clean and nicely decorated with everything you need on vacation. Would recommend to anyone who needs a little getaway to the lake.

Excellent & Cozy!!!
This cabin is so charming and cozy! It has everything you will need. The location is very remote so you do have to prepare in advance for food items, etc. my favorite room was the sunroom with the swings. I read an entire novel in just a few days with my morning coffee. We stayed with our son and dog and we went hiking about 35 minutes out at a recreational stop. Nothing extreme, but perfect for us with our 9 year old. We also stopped by the winery! Just about less than 10 minutes down the road. Kid friendly and dog friendly as well. Very tasty wine!! Perfect atmosphere on the patio. Right before driving into our Cabin it felt like I was driving through the Italian alps! Breathtaking beauty!!! Honestly, this was exactly what out family needed. We drove from Chicago and it was a RIDE but well worth every minute to get to this little gem. Fall was SO beautiful in this area. We watched the “raining leafs” daily & the stars are amazing at night. I can go on and on, but you get my point. We loved our stay. I also felt very safe and slept very well.

We really enjoyed our stay at this relaxing, newly renovated property. The area of the lake you’re own is so peaceful and the kayaks were a lot of fun. Very remote but the tranquility is worth it.

Beautiful, Peaceful Place.
This cozy house was all we needed for a wonderful getaway. Us and our 3 furbabies (pups) really enjoyed the dock and swimming in the lake. The kayaker and float pad were an awesome bonus. Janelle was a great host and answered all our questions. Our only complaint is that we could not stay longer! Loved every minute!! We will definitely come again💛.

So peaceful!
We loved staying at this property. Having our own dock was fantastic. The swim pad and kayaks were such a nice addition and the kids had an absolute blast. It was very peaceful and the part of the lake the property is on was not busy so the kids could swim without being worried about boats passing by. The house was well stocked and comfortable. The one thing to be aware of (which is also outlined in the vrbo description) cell signal is sparse and the wifi was not great, also getting to a store or a restaurant will take time so pack plenty of food unless you enjoy the drive. Lastly, lots of stairs, so for folks who have any mobility concerns it is definitely something to consider. Overall I would absolutely stay here again - it was peaceful, comfortable and relaxing.

Wonderful Getaway
This home was the perfect place for a quiet getaway. I will say that I was drawn to this particular home because it was pet friendly, which is so hard to find. I also loved that it sits on a cove of Lake Wautaga with access to a private dock. My family and I enjoyed the kayaks and the lily pad a lot. As far as inside the home, it was perfect. It’s so welcoming and cozy. I was able to find everything that I would use at home in the kitchen, the paper products were plenty, and the towels and blankets were abundant. I would definitely recommend coming prepared with grocery items or plan accordingly to grocery shop there. The options for groceries/gas are few and far between. We did have to restart the router a couple of times because the WiFi is very spotty but that’s okay and Jenelle was very honest and up front about it. The dish tv was nice for the moments that we did want to catch a show . Overall we really enjoyed ourselves. Thank you Jenelle!!

Getting away from it all in comfort
The house is lovely and very comfortable. Terrific king size beds (three of them), and fun furniture, like two wicker swing chairs. Kitchen has what it needs for the basics. Be sure to stop for groceries ahead of time -- we shopped in Elizabethton -- because it's a long way back down the mountain to get supplies. The house is remote, so be sure to get there before dark, as the description advises. And be sure to load the address into your GPS because it would be difficult to find the place without it pre-loaded as cell service is basically non-existent past the tiny town of Butler (where there is a Dollar Store, a couple of convenient stores, and a really good pizza place, called Maddie Moe's.)
As others have said, the place is awesome, but the internet is practically nonexistent. So be prepared for that. WiFi would come in for an hour a day, then disappear. Very random. And there is no cell service. So this is definitely a place to go to get away from it all. Bring books to read, some games for the kids, puzzles, cards, etc for evenings and rainy days because there really won't be any screen time.
But the gem of this trip is the lake and the house itself. The private dock is terrific, as are the two kayaks that come with the house, and the big floaty thing attached to the dock. My teenaged kids loved it. The water was lovely -- so clean and clear, perfect swimming. Yes, the walk down to the dock and back up is definitely a hike...you get in your steps for sure!! :) The lake is gorgeous. This is a little slice of a much larger lake. It was suggested that we rent a pontoon to really experience the rest of the lake, and you can dock the pontoon at the house, but we did not do that. Simply chose to sit on the dock and swim and occasionally venture out on the kayaks.
We appreciated finding a place to travel with our dog and made sure to keep things tidy on our end so that's always an option.
Overall, this was exactly what we needed. Restful, peaceful, away from it all. Beautiful part of the country we'd never been to before even though we only live one state away. Gorgeous lake. We would come here again. Thanks, Jenelle!

We really enjoyed our time at this home on Watauga Lake. The location was very convenient on lake. Home was well kept with plenty of extras to make it feel like home. There were only a couple of things that I wish could be changed, but homeowner has no control of these issues. The 1st was the lack of phone service over the entire area. If you want to get away from phone service then this is the perfect spot. The 2nd was the steep incline down to the dock. The stairs going up and down to the lake were exhausting! Sometimes hard to get out of bed the next morning.
Overall we would recommend the house and the renter. All of our expectations were met and we really enjoyed staying on the lake and feeling like we were at home. Thanks so much, Jenelle.

We are from West Coast and came to Lake Watauga for a wedding with our daughter and son in law. We stayed in early June. The cabin was great!! Enjoyed the lake, fished from the dock and from the provided kayaks and caught bluegill and small mouth on flies. It is a beautiful spot. The cabin itself is recently redone. It is very comfortable for two couples. Parking was easy, we had a 23 foot sprinter and a Jeep without problem. The cabin is up on the bank with steps leading to the water to a very nice dock that has room for two boat. We all enjoyed our stay tremendously. If i lived closer i would book this cabin every year for a week. One final comment, I play guitar and the beautiful sitting room overlooking the lake has great acoustics!!!

Overall, place is very nice and owners spared no expense with furniture and linens, especially all the blankets!! The owners were very generous in everything they provided, including all toiletries, laundry detergent, cleaning supplies, towels and beach towels, paper towels and toilet paper, brand new kayaks, and big floats we didn’t use, The lake was beautiful and the girls enjoyed the kayaks. We didn’t know life preservers were in the closet in bedroom. We had brought floats to blow up- it said there was an air compressor in garage? Didn’t see a garage. There was a locked outside door to basement? We couldn’t message the owner to ask because we didn’t have service. We did have issues with wifi(really only worked first day we were there, so my daughter had to drive over 30 minutes into town for school assignments). Do bring DVD and player to watch- no TV service all weekend. Those stairs! All 96 of them to the dock, were a killer!! The tub in main bathroom shared by 3 of us didn’t drain properly and could use a good scrub. We have rented a lot of places and this place by far was most generous to their guests.
