The welcome and help from staff was really good, and I felt warm and comfortable in my room. The location was quiet at the back of the building, with a nice view. The front of the building was on a busy road, but I didn't hear it from my room. It was an easy, 30 minute walk into Durham, or there were regular buses from right outside. Tea, coffee and biscuits were provided, as well as a hairdryer.
On this occasion the wifi wasn't working, which was a nuisance for me, although I imagine that was temporary. I also found the bathroom rather cramped, although it was clean and everything worked.

Grim atmosphere. Lumpy bed. No food.

The Seven Stars is set in the pretty village of Shincliffe with regular buses into the centre of Durham. There are also lots of country paths nearby for walking. It is easy to walk into town along the road.
The mattresses are old with the springs coming through. The basin was blocked in the room and the toilet hadn't been cleaned. The main deal breaker is that although there is internet, guests aren't allowed to use it making it impossible to go online (I travelled from China) and I had to go into Durham just to find somewhere with an internet connection. The reasons for not allowing guests to use the internet were hazy - the signal for the Seven Stars was clearly visible. The indifference to this issue made me feel very uncomfortable. Guests should bring their own breakfast - there is nothing available in the vicinity.

Nothing but to be fair it is an old inn so it is what it is.
Steep, narrow stairs. No soap. Shelf above a very small washbasin means a difficult to use washbasin.

Great accommodation which has recently been refurbished. The rooms were very clean and bedding towels were fabulous. The bathroom would have benefitted from some towel rails or hooks.
It will also be great when there is a breakfast option, but it was clearly indicated when booking that at the moment this isn't available.
We will definitely be back.

Great location which is why I booked it. Easily accessible to university and the town centre. Has been taken over recently by new owners. Inside looks very tired. When I arrived, none of the sockets were working in my room, and neither was the shower as it was an electric shower on the same circuit. Owner did offer me alternative accommodation elsewhere but I had chosen the hotel specifically for the location which was near my daughter. Owner did kindly refund my stay and I'm sure once the place has been refurbished it will be amazing.
no electricity in my room, so no TV, shower, or lighting

More than you could expect for the price.
Rooms looking a little tired.

Room was good value and was clean and comfortable

The location was great for visiting Durham and surrounding areas. The staff we met were lovely and nothing too much trouble. Easy to do the self checkin by phone, I previously was a little concerned as I've read very negative reviews regarding this however we were given a mobile number to call on arrival and Beth guided us in so no problem with this.
Room was basic as expected from understanding the pub is closed and looking for new owners and very cheap rate. Just needs a little tlc but everything was there for us.
Bed needs renewing as a little lumpy although we slept well. There was a fire door in the corridor to the room that banged loudly however this was only from around 8.30am when staff were cleaning etc, so didn't really effect us. I can honestly say that if a little work was done and the pub open this place would be a perfect place to stay if you prefer a quieter location than the city centre.

Cheap and cheerful all you need to rest your head. After reading some of the reviews I wasn't looking forward to it. But was pleasantly surprised when we arrived. Rooms clean spacious with tea and coffee facilities all we needed. Would defo return

Only negative was poor wi-fi

Great location, clean, comfy rooms with new carpets and good beds.
Breakfast was lovely.
Although pub not open, the venue was lovely.
Bathrooms need a paint spruce up. Corridors need some decorating.

The continental breakfast was good and the staff very helpful and friendly. We liked the location because the bus service was reliable and the riverside walk into the city centre (about 5 km) delightful. The room was spacious and well-equipped.
Until the day before travelling we were expecting to be staying in a functioning pub, which is what we wanted. In fact, the pub was to all intents and purposes, closed. Just the accommodation was open. Our small double bed in Room 2 was lumpy and uncomfortable. It was very hard to fill the kettle from the bathroom tap. There were no towel rails or hooks in the bathroom, It might be that all these issues will be addressed by the new owners.

Nothing
This place is an absolute dive!!! Should never even be on Bookings.com in my opinion. I arrived to find everything closed up by the Brewery. There was a very complicated procedure to go through to get to the room. If there had been a fire the only was out was through a window! There is no way to contact the people as the phone rings out. I have reported this to bookings.com. Beware of going here for sure. I was appalled with this property

Woken up at 3am by a loud group in one of the adjacent rooms. Lots of commotion, loud music, quite intimidating. Went on for at least an hour.

Breakfast was simple but fine considering the price paid. Room was comfortable and perfectly fine for a short stay. Shame the pub was closed, which might put some people off, but if you want to stay on the cheap then this is the place for you.

The pub and restaurant was shut down and it doesn’t tell you this when booking I had to switch rooms when I got there as mine smelt like a bin, but they did switch me rooms straight away there’s a horrible smell throughout

Spacious room. Comfortable bed. Powerful shower. Good location of television. Complimentary Tea and Coffee.
Nice pastries and yoghurts for breakfast and very nice food from restaurant. Great location for access to Durham and bus stops a few steps from the hotel on both sides of the road.
Suggestions: a chair to compliment the stool in the room/ somewhere to hang towels rather than place on the rads.
A few hooks somewhere. Used the extractor fan in bathroom but it was loud.
Had a room on the main road side and the top sash window closest to the bed needs a second window fastener on it which would help shut out road noise. Small things. None of which detracted from a very easy stay. Will be back.

Our room was very tired and in need of some attention. The toilet set at was loose and the shower difficult to control between hot and cold. The door to our room was also stiff to open and at one point I didn’t think we would be able to get out. The bathroom also had no heating in it. Despite that we slept well and had a really good home cooked meal on the night we stayed. So overall worth the money but wouldn’t necessarily stay again.

The property was nice in a nice location out of the city so a nice walk in
The pub and food in the pub was lovely but the accommodation upstairs was tired and unloved

Frequent bus service to Durham
Staircase rather steep to bedrooms

Easy to find. Clean. Friendly staff
Room would benefit from a freshen up. Shelf over wash basin made it difficult to clean teeth! I arrived at 9pm expecting to be able to meet my brother for a drink in the bar but the bar had closed. Thought this was odd for a pub!

Good value for money. The evening meal we had was excellent and the staff were very friendly. The situation was perfect.
When we booked we didn’t realise the breakfast was only continental but we didn’t mind although we had hoped for a little more selection, maybe some cheese Also some individual tea pots to make a pot of tea would be a good addition. But for the price paid was good value.

Breakfast was continental and there was an excellent choice - cereals, fruit juice, brown and white bread with lots of choice of spreads, yoghurts and fresh fruit. Which was replenished frequently.
The Sunday lunch was a real joy, great food and excellent value

Staff were lovely and welcoming, the pub was in a lovely location and a lovely walk to Durham along the river. Parking was available outside the pub. Unfortunately they weren't serving food the 2 days we stayed however they do have a choice of 3 other "sister" pubs which also offer 10% discount for guests and the food was beautiful, we went to the new board inn and would highly recommend although we went by car and not sure If there is a bus service, the rose tree is a short walk and had a lovely menu however there wasn't anything on there that I liked so we chose to drive out.
There is also a bus service outside the pub which runs regularly so very ideal on location.
First off they don't offer a cooked breakfast but a continental one instead...i was happy with this as I like a continental breakfast but I have to say the selection was poor considering this was the only breakfast. Things like pastries in packets, cereal and yogurt but I noticed they didn't seem to cater the more popular things such as crossiants, yogurt was rhubarb and raspberry flavours which I don't like either, so it felt very limited. The room we stayed in was very small, the bathroom was like that in a caravan and unfortunately had hair in the sink and shower however we didn't complain as we initially thought the value wasn't bad (before breakfast etc) this was disappointing as it didn't feel like the bathroom was "clean" there was no where to store anything and no hooks for towels etc.there was a considerate amount of dust on the bed etc and the decor wasn't great which made it look shabby which is a shame as downstairs is beautiful. Bed wasn't too bad but springs were noticeable and other reviews had commented the same. We had a window overlooking houses so could have done with a blind for privacy with the natural light still able to get through, this would also help with the street light outside as the blackout curtains didn't work too well on their own. There is a busy road outside which could be noisy but personally that didnt bother us and couldnt really be helped.
The door was tricky to open and lock and I couldn't manage it either.
I feel the value for money would have been great if it was with a lovely breakfast too but felt this let it down and the reflection of the price made it feel quite on the expensive side considering we had to pay for breakfast else where both mornings, I'd say value of £50 max per night for this room.

Convenient for staying and parking outside of Durhan centre. Evening staff pleasant and pub relaxing.
Comfortable bedroom.
3rd visit, not as good as previous as evening meal of 'fish & chips', chips were scraps of potato's. In the ensuite, basin was too small with shelf above, making it almost unusable and mirror was low for
only 5 ft use.
