Very noisy, couldn’t sleep, poor water pressure

First there is no way to lock the door from the inside, you can only lock it from the outside. In addition, we walked in and the gentleman at the front asked us if we are staying in our specific room number. We never met or talked to this guy, in addition he said when the bar was completely open to the hotel. As two females traveling alone this place did not feel safe. We needed up driving over three hours home and left right away.

I thought this would be a cool old building with a view. Instead it was a dirty old building with lots of P U. It’s got loads of potential but you can’t sleep on dirty potential. Some clean up and remodeling would go a long way.

Room very cold.

Elevator was broken BUT I was alerted & told I could cancel my reservation w/o any penalty. I stayed anyway (a couple flights of stairs was good exercize). TV did not work properly in my initial room BUT was given a better room with a good TV. Staff did their best so I will use Canfield again next time I stay in Dbq. [I've stayed in Hiltons & Hyatt's that have also had 'things' break down. What's important is how staff responds!]

Ridiculous! The guy made us show the receipt

Expedia and asked how much we paid and then told us if it’s not the right amount the girl tomorrow can tell us .

You get what you pay for… Room itself was big and ok for comfort… I was a bit chilled and asked where the heat controls were in the room… There is none! Only one downstairs for the whole building… No shower curtain! It is some sort of plastic rolling whatever it sticks out into the shower giving you less room. Bath towels were 1980s size so I thought I would use two of them, there was only one!

The room was cold as a freezer... No heat controls on room so we packed up and left like 5 hrs after being there a waste of money and time I'll never go here against Iwe wanted to stay at a hotel to have a day wlaway just to get treated like a kid and not be able to control are own heat so we left

Thought we would give it a shot since our regular hotel was booked and we wanted walking distance downtown. Check in easy. Very old place. Im ok with it be old but clean is comfortable is a must, unfortunately this wasn’t. It did the job for 2 night but had to transfer after for last night so that I could sleep.

Old building renovated. Uses radiator heat. No available coffee in room. Room was very nice and clean. Very comfortable. Friendly staff. Nice restaurant across the street. Very reasonable. Would stay again.

Check-in was easy and quick. Our room was simple, yet clean and sufficient for the very affordable rate. We enjoyed the karoake at the large bar on Saturday night. Good location within walking distance of entertainment, food, etc.

Clean, comfortable and close to downtown Dubuque so we were very happy with our stay.

Unique is definitely the word here, the place had unique pictures for their hotel. The place is super old and they tried to make it look updated with some things like new ceiling fan and fresh paint and new acoustical ceiling tiles but didn’t update the light covers for the ceiling lights and hung new grid and ceiling tiles a few inches below the old tile. You could see a lot of newer things that they half way fixed. They had old stained sheets on the beds and the head board looked like they got it from a flea market, very old and repainted. It almost looked like they painted over dirt.

It was a hotel built I believe in 1900s

Old school. Throwback to the days of Al Capone updated for Benny Goodman. Tiny bathroom but functional. Clean room, sparse, but adequate for a restful sleep.

There is a constant, rhythmic noise that sounds like it comes from an upper floor. Not hammering, but more squeaking that has not stopped. Noisy, stale cigarette smell. It's worse than awful. Plus I got bit on the hand by something in the night - bugs!

We found the Canfield Hotel clean and comfortable, and above all the professional yet friendly people working there.

We went here partially for the old-school feel, and it did not disappoint! Everything was fine, and about as expected for the price. Would stay here again.

I knew it would be an older property, but the sink didn’t drain and all the rooms had vents in the door so you could hear everything. I’m bike packing the Mississippi River trail and they gave me a hard time about bringing the bike to the room. The details don’t mention no bikes in the rooms.

It is listed as having a "free on the go breakfast", but there was nothing made available.

Location, accessibility and parking were fine. Nothing fancy, but everything was clean and adequate. Price was good. My main complaint was the inability to do anything about my room temp. I was told that heaters were not allowed. The clerk said he could get me an extra blanket..... he never even did that. That whole "customer service" thing seemed to be lost on the ol' fella. Disappointing...

Staying here was like stepping back in time to the “50’s”! The location is great. One block from Diamond Jo and restaurants and bars downtown. If you stay on Saturday night, the Rainbow bar is a must! Will definitely stay there again!

This is hotel was exactly what I needed for the night! It was just a simple room at a fair price. But I loved the hotel’s early 1900’s Dubuque decor and it’s in an area surrounded by architectural gems. Next time I’m in the area, this will be where I stay but I’ll plan more time to patronize the attached karaoke bar and surrounding shops.

Cool old hotel! Still uses keys! Seemed very safe, desk manned all the time. Need to get buzzed in after 2AM. Great location. A/C was out (given an option to cancel, but glad I didn't) had two windows that opened, had a cross breeze and a ceiling fan, and was very comfortable. Would stay there again if/when I return, which I hope to, as Dubuque is a very interesting town.

The hotel was absolutely horrible - from the pictures, it looked super cool.....we literally checked in, spent 20 minutes in the room, then checked out. The room was hot, unairconditioned, no window screens.

I wanted so badly to give this property a good review but after our stay I can't. As we were checking in, we met the new owner who assumed management the day before our stay. He has big plans for this property with many improvements coming. The rooms were larger than most with room for a table and nice size refrig/frz. Bedding was clean and pleasing to the eye. The price was lower than any other hotels in the area but we sadly got what we payed for. The check-in process was slow. The rooms were larger that most. The bar had reasonable prices and a great karyoke sound system. For being the first online reservation under the new management, they gave us a free drink. The staff and service was very good and they receive great ratings. The main negative we had was no controls for the air conditioning in the room. It was warm and we tried to sleep with the windows open but every train and accelerating vehicle that went by made it difficult to sleep. Just outside our windows was an entrance ramp to the highway and a railroad across the highway. Here's a list of items that are found in most hotel rooms but were missing from this one: no cups, no shampoo, no trash cans, noisy ceiling fan and TV had bad signal and kept freezing up. Bathroom was very small - It was necessary to step into the shower to close and open the bathroom door. The building is very old/nostalgic and has a lot of potential but the new owner has some work to do before a better rating can be offered.

This building was prob made in the 40s and no updates seem to have been made fo make it a better place. Everything is old, the rooms are super small, the bathroom sink was in the small living room. The bathroom was insanly small and combined with shower make it smaller. No shampoo. Funny thing bout the tv...its a roku tv which requires internet to work...but guess what, they dont have wifi!!! Avoid this place at all cost.
