Breakfast staff are the loveliest- the silver haired lady in charge will remain fondly in our memories as the warmest, sweetest caretaker of all the Sextantio guests
There was nothing I didn’t like about the hotel. But maybe some people should know that it’s a cave so don’t expect yr room to necessarily have modern comforts- eg only some rooms have refrigerators. And our rooms only had tiny blurry mirrors. If you’re ok with that kind of minor inconvenience for a few days- as we were- then Sextantio is a very special experience we highly rate

What an interesting and unique experience at Matera’s Hotel Sextantio la Grotte Della Civita. The ad, photos, description and post-booking followup emails gave an accurate representation of our stay. The checkin engagement was perfect. Their partner-shuttle service worked as described. Our hotel concierge presented a fabulous overview of the city and of their property. For a July stay, our cave room was sufficiently cooled but remained humid; there was adequate electrical and plumbing for comfort. The linens, bed comfort, breakfast buffet and entire staff were outstanding. After watching the YouTube video and experiencing the museum guided tour/video presentations, we spent a fair amount of time reflecting on the tough living conditions for families making a living and raising their children over the centuries.
We can offer no constructive comment for improvement.

The idea of the property is nice. The execution not so much. Some of the staff is very accommodating like Pietro and Marco while others are not.
You sleep in a cave. These are old and some had lots of humidity and mold. If you are not accustomed to that smell it’s not for you. Plus there is no light. My suggestion is to only do this for one night. Not more. The idea is nice but the execution needs to be better. There is not one comfortable seat to sit in on the entire property. Then again I dont think they can have anything plush as it will capture the wetness of the cave and probably stink.

original living quarters of Matera
no air condition; room smelled of mold; lighting was poor; no windows; ground floor room, next to kitchen, was the “best” unit

The room was unique and amazing. The location is stunning. The breakfast buffet was excellent.
The staff were friendly but service was not always quick. It was not easy to tell which outdoor settings were communal and which were dedicated to certain rooms. We had the misfortune to have school children stop above the main terrace and throw stones. The response from the staff to resolve the matter was slow and inadequate.

The location great for exploring the city. Loved the experience of staying in a cave- very magical. Breakfast was very good and there was evening aperitivo available which was nice.(for a fee) Loved all the candlelight provided.
Beds were just a bit too firm.

The location was great. Beautiful, exceptional accommodation in a cave. Minimalistic and lovingly decorated with original materials. Bathtub in the room and underfloor heating. Delicious breakfast and very friendly stuff.

The environment is spectacular! Its the most romantic hotel I’ve ever stayed in! The stone surroundings and the furnishings in each room were accentuated by candle light making the ambiance unforgettable. The historic significance only added to the experience.
I was not able to stay longer.

Fascinating and beautiful - unusual and adventurous. Not for those who want the regular 4 walls of a five star hotel experience.

Authenticity.
Breakfast galore!!!
Very accommodating staff
THE BED... best sleep I had since I was a baby. The candle lights and sound proof cave contributed to the magic too!
Accessibility for dropoff and pickup using toktok.
We got a room where shower is handheld because the tub is in the floor at the side of the room. But then it still adds to the overall experience.
... and I forgot to get get my second portion of burrata... was distracted by my fone

The historical value of staying in a cave. The location was great and the dining area and food were amazing. Candle lit rooms were very romantic.
The room was smaller than expected and we were expecting a bath tub, and while in-keeping with the decor the mirrors were totally impractical, couldn't see to put my contact lenses in. A concealed magnifying hand mirror for essential use would resolve this.

Amazing! Staff fantastic. Breakfast in the cave that once was a church was delicious. A unique experience we really enjoyed.
