Experiencing Adams County…
We have compiled the information in this packet based on our favorite places around the area. When we travel, we always like to be where the locals are so that we can really experience the people and place. We hope this guide would help you find those places in Adams County. You can also visit the Adams County Travel and Visitors Bureau website or pick up one of their magazines in our cabin. They have a comprehensive listing of things to do in the area.
Hiking
These are a few of our favorite trails. To see others listed on the Travel and Visitors bureau website.
o Agnew Trails: We have some walking trails on our property. There is a short hike to our pond that is well stocked with a variety of fish, including Bass, Bluegill, and Crappie. Please bring any fishing equipment you may need. Local gas stations sell worms. Please return all fish to the pond. Take pictures of the BIG ones and text them to Jim!
o Chaparral Prairie on Hawk Hill Road near West Union is one of our favorite places. It’s located 10 minutes from the cabin. Take 247 South and turn right on Chaparral Road. Hawk Hill Road turns right off Chaparral. Go about ½ miles and you will see an Ohio Dept. of Natural Resources building on the left. Park there and the trail head is to the left of the parking lot. There are several loop trails that would be considered easy hiking. The best time to see the prairies in bloom is August and early September.
o Cedar Falls is owned by the Nature Conservancy. It is an unmarked trail located about ½ hour from the cabin. From the cabin, turn left on 247 and go into West Union and turn left at the red light onto RT 125. Follow RT 125 for 5 miles and turn left on Compton Hill Rd and follow to RT 348. Turn right on Cole Road. Go about one mile and you will pass a brick house and red barn on the right. There’s a sharp right turn and you will see two metal gates on the left. The first gate is the trailhead. There’s a small area where you can pull off the road and park your car. Please do not park in front of the second gate (the one on the right as you face them). It’s a private drive and the landowner has several “No parking” and “No Trespassing” signs up. The trail is an out and back trail totaling less than 2 miles. The trails would be considered moderate, but there are several steep cliffs, so watch the kids. The trail follows the fence along the field and will lead to the falls. The best time to see the falls is during spring and early summer or after a large rainfall. It’s also beautiful in the fall to view foliage.
o Buzzards Roost is a trail owned by the Nature Conservancy. It is a marked trail about 20 minutes from the cabin. At the end of Coon Hollow Rd, turn left. Go to the stop sign and turn right on St. Rt. 348 and follow to St. Rt. 125 and turn left. Go about a mile up a hill and there’s a sign showing the parking area for the trail. It’s about a 4-mile moderate trail that has scenic rock outcroppings and a view of the Brush Creek Valley. It’s a great trail any time of year, but the fall leaves are very nice.
o Red Rock is a trail owned by the Nature Conservancy. It’s an unmarked trail about 20 minutes from the cabin. At the end of Coon Hollow Rd, turn left. Go to the stop sign and turn right on St. Rt. 348, which you will follow to St. Rt. 125 and turn left. Go about ¼ mile and turn right on Wagoner Riffle Road. This is the tricky part… Go about 1 mile; you will pass the Nature Conservancy’s Eulett Center on the left. Go about ½ mile more and the trail head is on the left. There are no signs and you will probably miss it the first time. It’s a pull-in area that’s big enough for a couple cars. Be persistent—the trail is worth it! It’s an out and back trail totaling less than 2 miles. It’s a harder trail that climbs to the top of the Red Rock Outcrop. There are lots of neat rock formations, cliffs, and a great view at the top of the climb. During the long summer days, this trail is great place from which to watch the sunset and still have enough light left to make it back to your car. The fall foliage is also nice.

o Shawnee State Park’s O-Hee-Yuh Resturant: 4404B St. Rt. 125, West Portsmouth, OH, The park is located about a ½ hour drive from the cabin. We enjoy eating here because of the beautiful lodge. The food is good, but service is normally slow, so it’s not good if you’re in a hurry. Our favorite time of year to go is during November and December, which is when the Garden Clubs of Southern Ohio decorate the lodge for Christmas and they always have the large fireplaces burning.

Very nice cabin. Decent internet. Peaceful and quiet. Getting to the pond is a bit of a hike but not terrible. Could use some curtains in the bedrooms as the blinds dont keep out the morning sun.

We stayed a few nights to get away from the city. It was close enough to civilization for anything that we needed to run out for, but very secluded. We will be booking here again.

Brought our family of 4 here for a little getaway to celebrate father's day weekend. Its a little town but we found plenty to do. Antiques and Miller's were a great find. The cabin was the perfect size for the 4 of us. Very clean! Owners responded quickly and were very helpful. Enjoyed sitting on the back deck and just listening to nature. The pond for fishing was a blast. My husband who hates fishing even had a good time trying it. We will definitely be coming back to this cabin again.

We quite enjoyed being together as a family. The cabin was comfy and nice. We didn't use the pond, but did take the hike to see it. Our favorite spot was Mineral Springs. Everywhere was a little bit of a drive, but we didn't venture out much. Was nice to slow down and relax.

Our group of old ladies (we range 55-74) stayed here for a weekend getaway. It was the best place we've every been. The kitchen has everything you could need to prepare anything! Just walking in the front door we were awe struck by the spaciousness and the welcoming feeling of the cabin. It was clean, comfortable, quiet and just what we were looking for. We can hardly wait to go back again.

This was my second stay at Deer Path Cabins and I would not hesitate to visit again! My friends and I enjoyed a relaxing getaway. The cabin has everything we needed to fix meals, watch movies and sit back and reconnect. We appreciated the homey atmosphere and wooded setting. Owners are quick to respond to questions. Beautiful home!

We had a wonderful time at the cabin. It was absolutely beautiful. The grandkids loved making s’mores and fishing in the lake. We would highly recommend this place if you’re looking for a quiet getaway by yourself or with family.
Thank you Jim for your hospitality and for providing a relaxing place for our family to enjoy.

This was one of the best VRBO stays I’ve had. The place is clean, charming, had all the amenities we could ask for, even things that we didn’t consider. The owner communicated everything about the place and offered very helpful recommendations. As for the location, it’s out in the country but still had the IT connection if you want to stay plugged in.
Will definitely book here on our next visit!

We enjoyed the time we spent here with my siblings from different states!! It is advertised to have a pond, but you have to hike thro the woods to get to it.

We were attracted to the area by the Native American Edifice called "Serpent Mound". We found the cabin very convenient to that location. The cabin was very comfortable and spacious for our needs. The internet worked very well and the kitchen provided an excellent stove and a very large refrigerator. Jim the property owner was very responsive and communicative. He provided detailed information as well as many suggestions about local attractions. We found the Amish "Miller Family" bakery, gift shop and furniture store to be delightful. We even bought a Rooster to give as a birthday gift to a friend! We totally recommend "Newly Built Rustic cabin with excellent WIFI" to anyone looking for a relaxing time in Southern Ohio.

This was our second time staying at the cabin near the stocked fishing pond. I say cabin, but it is big enough to be a house. They have everything you need except food and bait! The furniture is nice and the cabin is very clean. The kitchen is full of cooking supplies. Towels, sheets, starter paper products and starter trash bags! I always bring another roll of all paper products. The hosts are so nice and really want you to enjoy the cabin and lake. We caught a lot of fish this time. Take pictures because it is a catch and release. We loved the new TV with Roku in the main bedroom. One of our favorite pastimes is to sit on the front porch or back deck to enjoy our coffee. They even have marshmallow sticks and wood for the fire pit. Make sure to get a doughnut at Yoders.

Relaxing, comfortable, private, well stocked kitchen, lots of space, and a stocked pond within walking distance for the fisherman in the group. Owners are great and we are all ready to come back next year for our yearly family vacation. We were very lucky to find this place when our usual place canceled at the end of May and our reservations were for the end of July. Best thing that could have happened.

My family was looking for a place to relax and have access to lots of things to do around the location for day trips or even on the property, this place was perfect for us. Everything we could possibly need in the kitchen to cook(and stores not far from there), bathrooms, and even extra blankets were there. It was a wonderful cabin and experience. Jim was a great host.

If you are outdoorsy but like the mod cons. This is glamping! The house is beautiful and well maintained and has everything you could need. And the woods are all around.

Had a great time in Adams County. Shopped the area Amish farms, visited serpents mound and other attractions. Location of cottage was so convenient to everything. Jim could not have been more accommodating, he gave us great recommendations about the area. Super nice host!! Highly recommend this property!

Our group of family and friends loved our stay at Deer Path Cabins! The home is comfy and cozy and we didn’t want to leave! Bob is a neighborhood stray who shows up in the mornings and evenings for snuggles and food so when you grab your Walmart groceries, please grab a cheap bag of dry cat food and help him out, he will be so grateful. Our guys loved the fishing, my husband had the giant grass carp on the line and he got away, maybe he will get him next time! Our bed was too firm but Jim the owner bought us a memory foam pad that transformed the queen bed into a cozy spot to sleep. Kitchen is perfect with anything you need, bubble tub is luxurious, lots of great hot water for showers and fire pit was enjoyed every evening! Hope we can come back soon ❤️ We cried many tears leaving Bob tho…please take care of him, future guests!! 😿

We were super excited about going on a much needed vacation! We wanted somewhere close but far away. Convenient but a wooded setting. Someplace we could sit by a fire pit, hike, fish, enjoy nature and run to the local store if we needed something. This place provides all of that and then some! The pictures does not show that the master bedroom is on the other side of the cabin which provides privacy for all guests! The pictures are awesome but it’s definitely a must see in person! We were able to meet Jim and their dog Elsa by the lake and hear all about the area! We absolutely LOVE THIS PLACE! We hated to have to leave! The Agnes have thought of EVERYTHING so you will be extremely comfy while there! We have definitely found our home away from him and a lil piece of heaven!! This place does NOT disappoint and I foresee many more bookings here in the future!!

Our family of 6 stayed for 2 nights in this wonderful cabin, and we wished we had booked more! The property met and exceeded all of our expectations. The pictures on the listing are all accurate and really don't even do justice to how comfortable and inviting this cabin was. The owners really did provide everything needed in terms of linens, bath items, etc. All we needed to bring was our clothes and the food we wanted to eat. We were in the area visiting family and had a fairly packed schedule, but we wished we had dedicated more time to exploring the cabin and surrounding area. We did make it up to the fishing lake, and it was gorgeous as well! We decided we would return here any time we are back! I highly recommend this cabin for anyone that wants a comfortable, peaceful getaway in the hills!

We had a total of six adults and had more than enough room. My mother uses a walker to ambulate and never had issues getting around. Both levels of the deck is accessible without steps which was helpful. The owners are great and easy to contact. We live about two hours away so it was perfect for a weekend getaway. I would definitely book again and have already recommended it to friends.

This place was amazing and MORE than your typical cabin in the woods!! We were looking for a place for our entire family, including our 4 legged kids, to relax and remove ourselves from all the hustle and bustle of our everyday life and this place hit all of our check marks, minus a hot tub. By the time we had to leave, we were all so relaxed, rejuvenated and ready to jump back into our real world. Jim and Jodie are the perfect hosts and their accommodations are above and beyond! They have thought of EVERYTHING you may need during your stay, except for meals (grocery store 15 minutes away). Literally, all you need to bring are your clothes!!
Thank you Jim and Jodie for a great week

Although it was raining and windy so we couldn’t go fishing in the lake. The cabin offered so much we played cards and games and just watched movies. Can’t leave out the kitchen, we made meals all day and all we needed to bring was the food.
10.0 / 10.0
We really enjoyed the cabin. The area is safe, peaceful and quiet. The kitchen is huge! Perfect for cooking and entertaining. The host provided the wood for the firepit and was very responsive to our questions. Everything was clean and the house is well equipped with everything you could need. Our only feedback is that the twin beds are not very comfortable and you can hear the springs when you move.
