About this house rental
If you are looking for absolutely stunning views and a unique setting enjoyed in complete privacy five to eight minutes drive from two quaint harbor towns, then this vacation getaway is for you. No pet fees, no cleaning fees, no extra person fees. Perched high on a mountainside, this house is of Log/Post and Beam construction with a very, very open floor plan (please read the description carefully to make sure it’s a goof fit), large wrap-around porch, lofts, cathedral ceiling, and with windows and skylights on all sides to let in the truly magnificent, commanding vistas.
The house is a ski-lodge-style Post and Beam log house. It has a very open floor plan with visual privacy or potential visual privacy for the sleeping arrangements but no auditory privacy to speak of except in the downstairs powder room. With groups larger than one couple that needs to be considered, but those who book after my "open floor plan speech" reminder tend to have a wonderful time. Also note: it has a spiral staircase and fairly steep entry way stairs. It is not built to be accessible but we have hosted unusually fit people in their nineties. Use your judgement.
The house sleeps up to eight people in two open loft bedrooms and a cozy, visually private guestroom/library on two Queen sized beds, one Queen sofa bed and one full-sized futon pullout sofa, all very comfortable. There is a whirlpool tub and a stand-up shower, plus a half bath with sunken vessel sink. A country kitchen including a classic cast iron/enameled cook stove, gas range, and slate counter tops with silvan views from the sink. Elegant décor throughout. This house is intimate and romantic, while nature on all sides brings the outside in.
Our View and our Unique Setting:: Forests below you and blueberry fields above, you look down over the lush treetops or pick your own blueberries in season above the house. All neighbors are acres away and almost completely invisible. You will have to crick your neck to see the rooftop of one of them behind you from the wide porch, and then you will only see a part of a roof. You may see bald eagles and hawks soar below you! The peace and quiet and privacy here will amaze you, and there is virtually no traffic near us as we are situated at the turnaround of a small paved road high on the slope, and at the end of a long, steep private drive. A discretely used, only occasionally occupied second building on the property is tucked away out of sight, you won't even know that it is there. On the surrounding mountains to the Ocean, on all sides you will see nothing but forests and meadows dotted by a few fine houses in the distance with their cheerful lights at night. You see dozens of the islands on the Ocean, with Cadillac Mountain in the distance on Mt. Desert Island in Acadia National Park 43 miles away, half that as the crow flies.
Sea, Sky, Mountains, the Area:: The sunrise—if you are up for it—will sparkle on the water and sunsets will turn it a deep pink and the surrounding coastal mountains rose or gold. The area provides infinite possibility for the Nature lover, sailor, historian, art aficionado, birdwatcher or stargazer. For those who long for the water there are day sails, bareboat charters (better be an experienced skipper), lighthouse trips, lobster fishing cruises and eco-tours, lobster-bakes on islands, ferries, whale-watching, kayak and rafting trips, and three to six day nautical adventures on the classic tall ships and wooden schooners known locally and historically as Windjammers. For landlubbers there are hiking trails, starting right outside your door, all over Camden Hills State Park and beyond, as well as on breathtakingly beautiful trails known only to locals, which we will share with you when you come. If you are a bird lover, you will have an overwhelming chorus of birdsong right up at the house. The night sky is amazing.
Dining, Art, Life-style:: There is world-class cuisine and all manner of dining experiences, from waterfront fish-shacks to French to be had in the area, as well as the Farnsworth Art Museum, home of the Wyeth collection, and historic old harbors and quaint, busy waterfronts everywhere, filled with fishing vessels, luxury yachts from all over the world, and classic wooden sailboats. The house is equipped with wireless access and cable. Outdoor equipment includes Adirondack chairs and barbecue grill; well-behaved pets allowed upon approval. Children always welcome, although the house is not specifically "childproofed"; also some care must be taken with the spiral staircase as well as the antiques, art and cultural objects, as many are fragile. Please take care of wicker furniture as well thanks.
Free Wifi (fast and ready for work from home!)
Air Conditioner is not installed, but available upon request (large “portable” unit with windows vent and window mounted unit in the loft). Only needed occasionally in Maine during rare heat waves; normally (and famously!) the summer temps are mid-to upper 70’s to low 80’s....and comparatively dry air. There were some hot muggy days in the past two years ...so that option is available to our summer and early fall guests! Let us know. But do try the natural way first, it’s what we ourselves and many guests prefer; you’ll love the breezes and the incredible bird song! We also have multiple fans in every room and a large ceiling fan that operates quietly from the wall between the lofts. The wood beams are made of hickory which can emit a woodsy, musky smell on humid summer days if you close all windows, that may be a new experience, like being in a forest. You will generally feel connected to nature in this place!!
Due to the coronavirus, we’re taking extra care to disinfect frequently touched surfaces between reservations

Loved the house and the view! Centrally located to get to everything! So beautiful!!! Thank you!

Very well done, quiet and private. Close to nearby touristy things on the coast and Hwy 1. Open floor plan allows for some visual privacy, but no sound breaks in the sleeping areas. Worked well for our family but could be tricky in other situations. Overall, we enjoyed it and would recommend it to others.

Stunning views, very thoughtful items already there on arrival fresh juice butter bread. Which was super helpful. We really enjoyed our stay. Loved the vibe of the house.

This home was even better than the pictures! The space is so cozy and decorated beautifully. The hosts left a huge bouquet of fresh flowers for us along with bread, chocolates, and jams. Checking in and out was super easy and the home had all the accommodations you could need. Definitely will be back!

Perfect from start to finish! Secluded and beautiful views. Will be back! Great hosts!

Very nice place, quiet, rustic with a beautiful view. Convenient to the towns, parks, and shore. Well worth it.

This is such a lovely property! The house is open plan, so there's not a lot of privacy, but we're a close family, so it didn't matter. The space is comfortable, the kitchen is extremely well-stocked, and the hosts were so kind to provide some staples like milk and creamer, as well as tea and cookies. And the flowers on the table were beautiful.
The location was perfect for us - close to hiking trails and beaches, and not too far from Portland and Acadia National Park (1.5 to 2 hours each). The house is tucked away up in the mountain with lovely views, including of the stars on a clear night. You can sit out on the balcony enjoying the view and local birds visiting the feeder, or if it's chilly, the wood-burning stove warms the living room perfectly. It was such a treat to be able to stay there. Thank you, Melody and Michael!

Outstanding, responsive and communicative hosts, breathtaking unique home, great location. So much to do within minutes. Best welcome goodies ever: dozen farm fresh eggs, blackberries, blueberries, milk, almond milk, half and half, OJ, loaf of artisanal bread, jams, cookies (including gluten free!), honey, maple syrup…likely forgot something…it was all wonderful. Very high quality ‘usuals’ as well: soaps, shampoo and conditioner, paper towels, plentiful towels and linens.
Excellent use of space in this open plan home with numerous cozy sitting areas. Wide variety of books and magazines, gorgeous flowers and plants, interesting antiques and trinkets from world travels. Plenty of empty drawers and closet space for unpacking. The views are spectacular even though ‘ocean view’ is a stretch. On a clear day you can see Penobscot Bay very much in the distance from certain vantage points. Heed the extremely accurate description: there is no auditory privacy: bathroom, snoring, cooking, etc. all very audible everywhere. The driveway and steps are steep. None of these facts bothered us (just two of us celebrating our 35th wedding anniversary with our 2 well-behaved CKCS).
We highly recommend this gem in midcoast Maine and thank Melody and Michael for sharing their beautiful home with us.

Everything was great and as expected.

Melody is very fast and responsive. The house has great views and is very clean. Little welcome goodies are left to enjoy. Traveling with 2 large dogs there was nowhere for a dog to be able to play or use the restroom. There are small patches of grass alongside the hillside driveway. If taking a large vehicle as in and SUV or truck there is no room to turn around the driveway at the top. Otherwise, it was a pleasant peaceful stay with a warm cozy fire on chilly evenings!

Nice view close to Rockport, good neighborhood.

So glad we found this VRBO rental- we had a wonderful, relaxing visit staying in this cozy home. The close proximity to Rockland and Camden, while at the same time being away from it all is perfect. This is an ideal place to be able to relax and/or enjoy some excellent restaurants, shopping and hiking.
The views are amazing and we had enjoyed several visits from a Pileated Woodpecker, while we relaxed on the deck. The house is very welcoming and we found wonderful gifts of cookies, eggs, juice, milk, creamers, coffee and stunning fresh cut flower bouquets waiting for us! This attention to detail made us feel like honored guest when we arrived.

We loved our stay here. The property is tucked away on a very quiet street. Every morning and evening, we sat on the deck and watched and listened to the birds. It was so relaxing! The house was spotless and there were plenty of soft towels, blankets and beach towels. The kitchen is well stocked with dishes, pans, microwave, toaster, coffee maker, tea kettle, spices - not to mention the breakfast and snack items that were provided. The house is close to Camden and to the Samoset Resort where we walked the breakwater. The host was quick to respond and very accommodating. The description is dead-on about the "no auditory privacy", so although this was not an issue for us, it definitely should be considered when booking. There wasn't A/C (as is also mentioned in the description), but several fans were provided and kept the house comfortable. The entrance staircase to the house is steep and narrow so could be difficult for some people. Overall, I highly recommend this for a peaceful, away-from-the-crowds place to stay when in the area. We would definitely stay here again.

Make sure you read the host’s review about house. It was our fault that we didn’t realize that there was no air conditioning and the set up of the rooms was weird that when we got in the bedroom, had to walk through the bathroom and the other bedroom to get downstairs. Other than that it was a nice stay.

We love this home and location- perfect for our anniversary trip. This is our 2nd year staying here and many great subtle changes to the property.

Stunning views, great location
This small cabin is wedged into the side of a mountain, offering stunning views from the large windows and wraparound porch. It's such a peaceful place with amazing stars at night, but just a quick drive to the beach and shops in Rockport and Camden. Melody and Michael have put great care and effort to providing a warm and cozy environment, filled with greenery and flowers, and an eclectic decor and library of Eastern and Native American influences. The only caveat is the inaccessibility - older folks or those with mobility issues will not be able to navigate the crazy steep hill that is the driveway, and the parking can accommodate two cars only if you're very careful. Though the owners are pet-friendly, few dogs will be able to navigate the spiral staircase to the upper floor, and the nature of the cliffside means there's nowhere for a dog to do his business unless you take him all the way down the hill, a strenuous walk. Still though, it's all worth it, particularly for those under 50 or without pets, to enjoy the stunning views and tranquil vibes of this beautiful retreat.

We had a fun time here!

great getaway
The most striking feature of the property are lots of light and expansive forested mountain and valley views from the large deck ( at top of canopy level) and every room. The owners are friendly and accommodating. Despite the remote feel, the cabin is close to the towns/harbors of Rockport and Camden. We had a great time at our week at the cabin

Lovely! Rustic! Spotless! Every detail for a romantic stay was taken care of! Breakfast goodies, firewood, even fresh flowers!
Most grateful to our hosts!

great views, good location
the non privacy of the sleeping arrangements was the only drawback in renting this property again, otherwise a nice stay.

Like several others have said, while some rentals feel cold, this one truly feels like a well loved home, because it is. We had an amazing week long anniversary celebration here and it was everything we needed and more. The views were incredible and the house was immaculately clean, warm and welcoming. The little gestures of extra thought and kindness were really appreciated -- delicious bread, jam, eggs, coffee and creamer for the morning. Fresh flowers throughout, a fully stocked kitchen, and more than enough lovely linens. Melody & Michael, thank you for sharing your beautiful space with us!

Gorgeous views, excellent hosts, and everything you need
We enjoyed our stay- from the check in (Melody is extremely responsive and helpful) to the extremely well-appointed home. The views are amazing and we loved watching the birds from the expansive deck.
Upon check in, there were fresh flowers and groceries for us (what a nice surprise)!
The views are better than in the pictures.
We look forward to returning in the future!

Enjoyed a peaceful, relaxing week celebrating our 40th wedding anniversary. The cabin was perfect for that. Melody was responsive to any questions or items needing attention. Great location for exploring the surrounding area. We were greeted with beautiful floral arrangements & lots of goodies/treats. Nice linens. I would pay attention to her notes about privacy - it may be a bit awkward for more than one couple, unless you’re VERY comfortable with one another.

Lovely. While some rentals feel sterile, this truly feels like a home. Great communication from Melody throughout, from scheduling the rental, to encouraging us to call her or her house manager at any hour (there was no need). Welcomed by the rock garden, 3 gorgeous flower arrangements, and a kitchen stocked with eggs, bread, butter, juice, coffee, jams, honey, fruit- all you need for breakfast your first morning and more. Well stocked kitchen with cookware and basic supplies needed for preparing and storing meals. Comfy furniture, good reading lights and lovely mountaintop views from the sofa and the deck (bring your sunscreen). After a day of hiking, what a treat to come back to that deep, long jacuzzi tub. I personally loved close up views of birds at the feeder, and an ample supply of seed for refilling them. We were seeking a week of respite and relaxation and got exactly what we needed. Thanks Melody and Michael - sorry we didn’t get to meet you and hope to in the future.

Magical Thanksgiving Weekend
We just spent Thanksgiving weekend at Melody and Michael's beautiful home and can't say enough about our experience. As soon as you walk into the house you feel a sense of calm. Upon arrival we found two beautiful bouquets of fresh flowers and a counter and refrigerator full of delicious fresh bread, jams and goodies. The house if full of beautiful and interesting artifacts and books. Everything you need is at your fingertips, including everything we needed in the kitchen to prepare a full Thanksgiving dinner. The location of the house is perfect, 10 minutes to both Camden and Rockport, and set up on a hill that overlooks glorious hills and water in the distance. Melody and Michael were such lovely hosts and we can't wait to return!

Great place for a retreat
We stayed here as a week-long retreat. Fabulous property (you can see from the website). Melody and Michael were amazing hosts. Immediately responsive to any of our questions. They had beautiful fresh-cut flowers and a stocked refrigerator and pantry to great us. Easy drive from the house to outdoor ventures as well as Rockport and Cambden.

We are an older couple (50’s) from NYC who were in deep need of restoration and respite in nature. This property offered us just what we needed. I loved the location, with the vast porch overlooking the valley. Just waking to the magnificent view with the trees turning color and the Adorable chipmunks scurrying around, and the lovely birds at the feeder nourished our souls. Being surrounded by the beauty of the plants, the flowers, the eclectic art and spiritual artifacts provided us with a reprieve from the chaos of our daily lives. The wonderful acoustics, given the open layout were an extra perk for playing sax! Melody and Michael are incredibly generous and conscientious. The kitchen is stocked with wonderful goodies to snack on and enjoy breakfast. If you plan to go cooking there is a Hannaford supermarket on Elm St. in Camden. Paper goods, toiletries, linens and towels are in ample supply. It is a ten to fifteen minute drive to the beautiful town of Rockland where we visited the wonderful Farnsworth museum and the Break water lighthouse. A visit to Mount Beattie in Camden is breathtaking. The Galloway cows at Aldemere farm were delightful. The drive to Lake Megunticook is wonderful. The highlight of our ten day stay was the trip to Acadia. We were grateful for Melody and Michaels assistance with printing the hard copy passes needed for entrance. There is so much to enjoy and great food nearby. I’d highly recommend the Hartstone Inn, Natalies, 18 Central Oyster Bar & Grill and Frannies bistro. Maine is an incredible state and having this lovely sanctuary as our home base was perfect for us.

Just what we were looking for
A group of friends and I spent a long weekend at Melody and Michael's wonderful home. It really exceeded our expectations. The house is so welcoming and we felt at home from the moment we walked it. Unlike a lot of rentals that have been stripped of their personal touches, this truly felt like a home and one that we were comfortable settling into. It is stocked with everything that you could need to cook, chill on the deck, read, and relax. Somehow it is filled with interesting things but doesn't feel cluttered and is very clean. We were a group of 7. As others have mentioned, it is an open set up, so don't expect private bedrooms at all and there isn't really noise privacy with either bathroom. That said, it totally worked for us as a group of close friends who have traveled together many times. We actually stayed in another "fancier" home for a few nights after and found ourselves missing Melody's place. Really love this house and would definitely return.
