About this cottage rental
Merrydale Valley leads down to Slaithwaite village. There are 3 properties within Merrydale hamlet. Ours (Tyas House), our holiday let (Tyas Cottage) and our neighbours' house and barn which adjoins Tyas Cottage. Although the houses are fairly close together, they all have complete privacy. We are retired, so are usually at home.
With underfloor heating, massive insulation, solar panels and an electric vehicle charging point, Tyas Cottage is particularly eco-friendly
Much commented on is our steep, narrow, cobbled access lane. We are happy to ferry guests up and down the hill when there might be snow or ice on the road, but even large ambulances are able to get up and down in normal weather.
The cottage is furnished with very special antique furniture, much of it brought over from South Africa. This includes a hand-carved Georgian mahogany 4 poster bed.
The gardens contain several sculptural features. The metal pods that hang from a tree next to the millpond are very well used and children love the long swing next to the river.
Our guests seem to particularly enjoy the quiet, secluded, rural location. They often walk up through the woods on the ancient packhorse route that leads to the Rose and Crown with its delicious local beer (the steep walk is not suitable for the old and infirm. They would need to drive or be driven to the pub around the top of the valley).
Slaithwaite is a vibrant village and definitely "on the up". It is a lovely walk down Merrydale to Slaithwaite (about 25 minutes). The topography of this district can be very steep with its tight little valleys in between vast heather-clad moorland. There are loads of varied and interesting walks in the area. Tunnel End could be a destination if one were to walk along the canal from Slaithwaite to Marsden. The Pennine Way is quite near to Tyas Cottage.
We are a ten minute drive from Slaithwaite station which has free parking and gives easy access to York, Leeds, Huddersfield, and Manchester. Shibden Hall, is the nearest Elizabethan House (about a 20 minutes car journey away). Anne Lister, of the TV series "Gentleman Jack" fame lived there in the 18th and early 19th centuries.

Place with history in the heart of England ! The most magnificent garden and endless trails right from your doorsteps.Hosts John and Victoria nice people who can answer any of your questions. We’ve been in Louvre and Versailles , Buckingham Palace and many other gardens but this little garden above them all. Sorry, Kings and Queens you’ve lost this battle! It’s been the most amazing experience in our lifetime!!!

We greatly enjoyed our stay at Tyas cottage. The gardens are surroundings were beautiful when we stayed in July. We all enjoyed playing in the garden, walking into the village, and exploring nearby. Our hosts were friendly and helpful and it was nice to be welcomed with a tea tray. We stayed with my parents who are in their 70s and our children aged 8 and 10. The cottage was perfect for these ages. Thanks for a lovely stay

The property has been extensively renovated to a very high standard, and combines modern and historical features; and is well-equipped, and the bed was comfortable. Property owners are readly available, and care for the property, described its utilities, and answer questions. Access by car is challenging due to steepness and narrowness, and manageable with very slow and careful driving. There are local walks, as well as nearby villages/ towns within easy driving distance. Although described as "...Kid friendly...", I would not recommend this for young children as there is a risk of young kids damaging fine looking old furniture; and vertical metal rods that are part of the staircase have wide gaps between them that could be climbed through/ fallen through even if a gate were to be used. Internet connection was easy to connect to but had no password. Mobile phone reception was fine. We enjoyed our stay, and recommend it for most (although not suitable for all), and would be unlikely to return.

Property was everything we wanted for 40th birthday celebration. John and Vicky were very keen that we had all the things we needed for our stay, and were able to tell us about the cottage and the local area. A lovely location even in winter - it must be even better in spring/summer. Sadly we had chosen the cottage because a hot tub was advertised as it would have helped with the children. This was not the case. After a long time on the telephone Vrbo did compensate in part for this misrepresentation.

This was a rare find! A beautiful quirky home with everything we needed for a quiet break. So unusual to stay somewhere with a kitchen fully equipped for cooking. Lovely welcome from the owners too. Will definitely be returning.

This wonderful property is found down by the water in a quiet, peaceful valley. Our hosts were so lovely and the cottage is a piece of living history. This is the perfect base for visiting the area which has much to offer. The gardens have been lovingly tended and make for an artful retreat. The cottage is very well equipped and very comfortable. Fabulous stay. Thank you.

A very beautiful and comfortable cottage hidden in a Yorkshire valley. Access could potentially be tricky in winter as it's down a very steep cobbled track but it was in a beautiful place.

Wonderful stay for a short notice business trip. I decided to stay here because I couldn't find hotels during my business trip. I'm glad I had hotel problems because I had a lovely stay at this cottage. Victoria's gardens are very beautiful and inspiring. I enjoyed the fresh flowers in the cottage during my stay. I hope to come again, next time I'll bring my family.

Unwelcoming
To say that pets are welcome at this property is a misnomer, indeed to say that humans are welcome is misleading too.
Upon arrival anyone over 18 is instructed to read the rule book .. what to do if you get a stain on a towel, no moving of furniture, leaving bed sheets in a certain way upon departure so they can be inspected for stains amongst some of the many rules.
Lots of information about the history of the property and the importance of caring for the furniture ...
My dog could only really stay in the kitchen, and was not welcome in the garden.
We felt like the owners wanted our money but did not really want visitors.
The cottage is in a very secluded and beautiful location so if that what you're looking for go ahead and book, otherwise read the small print.
For the price I would expect newer towels, that were soft, good quality pillows and duvet, a more powerful shower ... and most of all to be made to feel welcome.

Charming cottage full of character.
Tylas cottage is full of charm and character. It is very comfortable and spacious. The garden is a gem. Lovingly cultivated and quite stunning. There are some lovely walks from the cottage including one that leads to the local pub that has a breathtaking view of the valley below. The hosts were very friendly and helpful. Definitely worth the stay.

Beautiful and secluded area
Set in a sheltered dell and surrounded by amazing landscape. Beautifully renovated warm property with all mod cons. Lots of walks to do direct from the property and within a short distance too.

We had a wonderful stay, the cottage is perfect in so many aspects from the location and the grounds. Inside we loved the furniture, it totally felt like home from home. Also it was very warm which is something that for me is a must. The owners were delightful. Excellent walks and pub. Great place to take a dog too. We had a wonderful time!

A fantastic cottage in a wonderful location.
We had a such a lovely stay at Tyas Cottage. The cottage is beautiful, spotlessly clean, and uniquely furnished, with everything we needed. The location itself is wonderful - waking up in bed with a view over the beautiful woodland was amazing. The hosts were very helpful - nothing was too much trouble and they made us feel very welcome. We can't recommend this cottage enough - and we hope very much to return.

Stunning tranquil retreat
I was working in Brighouse for a couple of weeks and decided to rent a cottage for the weekend so the family could visit.
Could not have been happier with my choice. Beautiful setting in the middle of nowhere, walked through the woodland and backstreets to the main town with the dog and kids having an adventure as we went picking blackberries.
The hosts are lovely and helped us feel very much at home and the cottage is stunning, a complete labour of love i’m sure. Would rebook again without thinking

great cottage with a antique interior (
The cottage is situated in a very quite and remote place and is attached to a very beautiful garden. Great for relaxing but also not to far away from interesting destinations such as Yorkshire Dales and Liverpool....
