Frequently asked questions

Where is Grace Bay?

A sparkling white sand and crystal clear blue water enclave on the island of Providenciales, Grace Bay — often referred to as “Provo” — is the most developed and most visited of the 40-island archipelago of Turks and Caicos. Providenciales Airport is 20 minutes west, on the center of the island. Car rental is suggested if you’re interested in exploring, but most resort packages include shuttles. Plus, the shops and restaurants of Grace Bay are often within walking distance.

What is Grace Bay known for?

Turks and Caicos is often grouped with the Caribbean Islands, though it is actually in the Atlantic Ocean, near the south of the tip of Florida in the U.S. and is a British Overseas Territory. There were no motorized vehicles on the island before 1967 and the bulk of the resort development has occurred since 1993. The island is known for its spectacular diving, snorkeling, kiteboarding, and beach lounging. Many tour operators offer full and half day charters that include snorkeling or diving and island hopping. The main export and local delicacy is conch.

A quick guide to Grace Bay

  • Grace Bay Beach: Grace Bay Beach is by far, the most popular beach and community on the island. It has earned the title of “Top 10 Beaches in the World” across many lists for its soft, white sand, and clear, turquoise waters. The beach is eight miles long and provides endless beach strolling opportunities. This side of the island is noted for its calmness, making it perfect for swimming.
  • Provo Golf Club: Play 18-holes in paradise on a well-maintained course called Provo Golf Club, challenging enough to stay interested, but not overwhelming in any sense. Although there are no views of the water from the course, the water is not too far to cool off when you are finished. Find it behind Club Med on Grace Bay Road.

Popular destinations near Grace Bay

  • Chalk Sound National Park: A huge, picturesque lagoon in the middle of the island is a lovely place called Chalk Sound National Park to rent a kayak or paddleboard, enjoy lunch at Las Brisas, or sit and take in the view.
  • Taylor Bay Beach: Not far from Chalk Sound View is a beautiful, hidden beach in Taylor Bay, which is protected from the wind and offers a lot of peace and quiet. The water is shallow, calm, and blue; highly regarded by those who make it there. Sapodilla Bay Beach is just up the street if you’re in need of more amenities such as beach chairs and umbrellas.
  • Little Water Cay Nature Reserve: Little Water Cay Nature Reserve, also known as “Iguana Island” for its thousands of iguanas, is also home to Half Moon Bay, only a short boat ride east from Grace Bay.

Best neighborhoods in Grace Bay

  • Grace Bay Beach: Grace Bay Beach is the area with the highest concentration of resorts. Many of the beachside resorts are spaced out well enough not to feel too crowded, and the inland villas even more so. This neighborhood is also where the golf club, the Turks and Caicos Museum, and the island’s singular casino are located.
  • The Bight Settlement & Grace Bay West: This area and Grace Bay Beach run together with little obvious distinction. Grace Bay West includes a wide variety of accommodations, restaurants, shopping, tour operators, and Smith's Reef, a popular snorkeling spot. The Bight Park is a beach park, famous for hosting Thursday night fish fry events.
  • Long Beach Hills: Across Leeward Highway from Grace Bay is Long Beach Hills, a quieter community with resorts — but less restaurants, shops, and entertainment, except for a few kiteboarding schools. The neighborhood is named for its long stretch of soft sand beach lining the bay from end to end. It is this windward beach that’s increasing Turks and Caicos’ reputation for being one of the best kiteboarding destinations in the Caribbean.
