About this house rental
For the traveller seeking a more authentic experience of Hawai`i is Hale Makani Kai, "home of the gentle ocean breeze." Ideally located for experiencing the unique beauty and culture of true Hawai`i, this home is found on the "beautiful side of the island” where the lush green mountains meet the crystal blue Pacific Ocean.
This comfortable upstairs rural home offers you the simplicity of island living without sacrificing modern convenience. After a swim in the ocean, relax on your deck where you can watch honu (sea turtles) taking a break at the surface, something you won't find on more crowded sides of the island! If you're lucky, you'll even get a chance to catch whales breaching out beyond the reef at the right time of year. Become entranced while watching the coconut trees swaying in the ocean breeze, perfectly framing your view of the ocean from the deck or living room - like something out of a postcard! Behind you, the Ko’olau mountain range rises into the sky, covered in a lush, green junglescape, where wild boar, peacocks, and birds live freely and mountain streams run untouched. The tranquil setting of this gem of a home truly removes you from the outside world, giving your spirit a place of solace to reconnect and be renewed.
When you’ve rejuvenated and are ready to venture out, you’ll find no shortage of unique local places to eat, uncrowded beaches to visit, and island shopping to explore. Two of the top ten world famous places to visit on O'ahu, The Polynesian Cultural Center (www.polynesia.com) and Kualoa Ranch (www.kualoa.com) are just minutes away. Lifetime memories are waiting to be made at these two truly unforgettable attractions, amongst others, just down the road from the home.
When you stay with us, not only do you get a more local experience, but you also are supporting local. We are kama’āina - a local family dedicated to caring for and sharing this special place we call home. We are honored to be able to introduce you to our unique island culture and lifestyle. Most of all, we are committed to sharing the true meaning of ALOHA with you, so that your Hawaii experience will be an unforgettable one for you and your `ohana (family). We've raised our family in this home, and while our children are now grown and on other parts of the island, this home has remained in the family, and we are honored to share its specialness with visitors in hopes that they will be able to experience an authentic piece of this truly unforgettable place. We look forward to welcoming you!

Our house was wonderful! The only issue we had was a few of the electrical outlets did not work. The house was in a great location, and kept very clean

This was a great place for our family of 6 to stay. We were hoping to go out on the beach behind the house but the tide was too high. (this of course out of control of owners) The road is noisy, so bring ear plugs if you are a light sleeper. Other than that is was perfect! We really were only there to sleep and shower because we were all over the island. It seemed to be about an hour drive regardless the direction but that was expected. The place is surrounded by great places to eat. Lance and his wife stopped by just to make sure everything was ok and if we needed anything which was very nice. Over all a great place to sleep, shower, and plan for your next daily adventure!

We really enjoyed our time at this rental. The views from the lanai were incredible!
We spent a lot of time during our 3 days on the lanai, and at the shoreline. It was awesome watching crabs and other sea life on the rock wall. The AC in the rooms worked well and quickly cooled the rooms down at night. There is no AC in the living room where my youngest slept though (and I overlooked that in the description) but that is my bad.
The only negative we had was the road traffic beginning at 4-5 in the morning. If you have light sleepers (like my dad) it could be an issue-even with the AC going.
For a 35 MPH road, some people fly down it and if it is a big truck the noise is really loud. One such big truck woke nearly everyone up one morning. I'd recommend a white noise maker or ear plugs if a light sleeper, but it wouldn't prevent me from coming back because of that view! Thank you!

Fantastic views from the deck and living room. Great property layout and snorkeling in front of the unit. The one bathroom was a tad small but we managed. Good times were had by all.

Lance is a wonderful host. He was very accessible and accommodating when our flight was extremely late.
We loved the small town of Hauula and wide assortment of food trucks.
I experienced one of the best dives I've been on in recent memory-- the ship wreck dive: Sea Tiger. Got to see moray eels, Scorpian fish, octopai, sea turtle, a white tip shark, as well as swim inside the wreck! Simply amazing!
Thanks again Lance for a wonderful time and for letting us stay at your simple but lovely abode!

This property was perfect for our first visit to the beautiful island of Oahu. Check-in was a breeze and the owner Lance was even there to give us a quick tour.
The house had everything we needed for our family vacation. Drinking our coffee on the deck outside and watching the sun rise gave us that ultimate vacation feeling. We also loved walking the beach in the morning and even saw a few turtles.
Beds were all very comfy and it worked really well for us that we could do laundry in the house.
Lance was very easy to reach and helped us with all our questions. Also, he is a very talented artist (his art is featured throughout the house) and we were very lucky we were able to buy a piece of art from his studio that is located below the house.
Would love to come back here someday!

This was a trip to remember. If you are looking to experience the true island this is your place. We seen the most amazing beaches, views and sea life. We got to swim and snorkel with turtles just steps from our door. Lance was full of information and even opened his art gallery for us to come see. He's a very talented artist. We would 100% come back and stay here.

We absolutely loved our stay. Lance's place is in a fantastic location and was the perfect place for our large family. The property is well maintained and comfortable. We loved being right on the ocean and the deck and yard were a great bonus. We would definitely stay again.

This house was a nice getaway from the hustle and bustle of other parts of the island, but a 10-20 minute drive from a lot of great beaches, parks and places for activity or groceries and simple restaurants and food trucks.
We thought there would be a little bit of beach between the house and the ocean but the back of the property leterally steps into the ocean for snorkling. Although that was unexpected it was pretty cool and the nearest beach was a 1 minute walk.
A bit of maintenance could be done to a few windows, AC units worked but were pretty loud, but manaageable.
The beds were comfortable, and amenities sufficient.
Overall a great stay.

The house was everything we needed. Very clean and right on the water. Lance was wonderful and brought us sand chairs for the beach. Would definitely recommend this property!

My best friend and I always travel long places. She haf a timeshare down in Waikiki. I decided to book this property for the first leg so we could see all the more laid back, less tourist and more beachy areas. Lance communicated with us and anytime we needed anything he was a phone/text away. Beautiful view steps outsde of ocean. All the great beaches and Polynesian Center down the road. Highly recommend this property.

We truly enjoyed this property. The location and style fit us perfectly. The view from the deck is amazing and we saw many whales breeching in the ocean. Air conditioned bedrooms and washer and dryer were a blessing. Lance and his wife are wonderful hosts and replied quickly to any questions or concerns. Would highly suggest this rental to anyone. Great trip.

Great property for a small group of friends, 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms along with full kitchen and comfortable living room. Some road noise at night, but not very noticeable during the day. Owner was extremely responsive to questions before and during stay.

The property is described accurately and is roomy for a family of 5 adults. The deck view is gorgeous and surrounding local beaches uncrowded. The drive into Waikiki is a good hour and can be a bit slow, but always nice to get back to quietness of Hauuala. Very reasonable golf course just 10 mins away on the ocean that kids enjoyed. Lance was very accommodating and communication was great.
An observation, is a few more added simple comforts would make the stay more enjoyable. Deck chair padding covers, bedroom end table with lamp and newer refreshed beach towels. Overall we enjoyed our vacation and we found the this Simple Rural home comfortable and sufficient for our stay.

The house was very clean. Nothing fancy, but has everything needed for a very enjoyable stay. The views are amazing and great snorkeling right off the steps. Lance is a very helpful host.

The property is a well-located older property of wood construction. I could not locate smoke detectors in the property so i purchased one at a local hardware store and kept in the property for protection.

We enjoyed the property very much. It was as described with the exception of traffic noise. The owner came over and introduced himself and it turns out he's quite a famous painter which was an honor. His work is throughout the house and is beautiful. We saw a turtle in the ocean one day while standing in the yard. Overall we had a great experience.

This is by far one of our favorite homes. This was our second stay here and it was just as amazing as the first stay. Perfectly located for adventures on the beach and close to shopping, restaurants, and surfing. We love this house and we will return again.

Lance’s spot is an amazing location. True to his description, it’s a basic beach house, met all of needs, and we enjoyed being there. Being literally steps from the ocean we watched the beautiful sunrises every morning, went for a morning swim and had breakfast on the deck. A quiet beach is a few minutes walk away, and it was great being in the heart of the North Shore for easy drives and exploring. Convenient to shopping. Lance was very nice and responsive to any questions we had.
A short but enjoyable stay!

This place is in the perfect spot if you want to get away from the business of Waikiki! The location is very beautiful! The host, Lance, was very friendly and accommodating! He was also very informative of the area.

We had a great time during our stay. My kids had a blast being able to walk right into the ocean! They snorkeled a lot and we even saw a turtle right outside! The sunrises and moonrises are incredible. Also, if you get a chance to visit the gallery downstairs, I highly suggest it! The artwork is stunning (some of which are hung around the house)! Lance was so easy to work with and very kind. There is noise from the road, but it didn't bother us much!

Road noise and no central ac. Portable A/C units loud and old. View and deck is the best!

The location is excellent. On the beach/water. We enjoyed the morning sunrises. Two of the days we saw sea turtles. It was very nice to have a kitchen with the basics to fix breakfast and prepare for our outings. It is too windy and choppy waters to scuba dive from the house--at least for us. Plus, we had children/grandchildren with us. We snorkeled at Turtle Bay--which was good for starters for the children--ages 8 and 5. Then we went to Sharks's Cove, Three Tables and Hanauma Bay. We enjoyed our stay at the house and would rent it again!

Beautiful location. House needs to be updated. Once you get over the shock and accept that it’s a total beach house you can enjoy yourself.

Great property with a fantastic deck for socializing and a convenient public beach just steps away!

Such a lovely place to stay while we were here in Oahu. We have loved getting up to the sunrise, early swims and walks right on the beach, just steps away. We saw turtles almost every time we looked out to the ocean.
Although we were busy visiting many sites on the island, we always looked forward to coming back and relaxing. We enjoyed the cool breeze and the beauty of the ocean while sitting on the the deck or in the living room. We considered staying here as one of the top highlights of the trip. We did not lack for anything
We truly had the best time and feel very
Grateful for the opportunity to stay.

Waking up to the Hawaii sunrise would never get old. Beautiful location right on the water that gave spectacular views any time of day. Thanks Lance for letting us stay in your beautiful home!

My extended family of 6 had a nice stay at Lance's place. We enjoyed our daily swim right in front of the house, snorkeling trips in north shore, visits to the Polynesian center, Kualoa ranch, valley of temples, all within a short drive.
The apartment had everything we needed. We'd love to be back again!

Perfectly beautiful and clean home, very spacious! Lance was HIGHLY responsive to our messages though we didn’t need much or have any questions while we were here. Everything is laid out perfectly with either written instructions or was self explanatory. Kitchen was fully stocked, had all cookware and dining ware we needed for 6. Had beach towels which added even more to our swimming experience.
Will absolutely recommend others to stay here.

We loved this location and had a wonderful time! Would stay here again!

No frills ocean view property. Unit was as described. We enjoyed ourselves. Kitchen could be better stocked but it was no issue for us given that we only stayed a few days.

We spent a wonderful week in Lance and Trish’s wonderful house. It was exactly as advertised, with stunning sunrises over the ocean, beach access from the back yard, working air conditioners in each bedroom, comfy beds, and a decently-stocked kitchen. Our hosts were friendly, accommodating, and very responsive. I would recommend this property to anyone looking for a reasonably priced house on Oahu.

Would stay here again in a heartbeat. A lovely oasis away from the busyness of Honolulu. Truly beautiful views , and so many beautiful beaches close by , including the one right out front. There’s a little beach that no one goes to about 5 houses down. Lance was a wonderful host , friendly and accessible , but completely let us be ! Hope to come back again soon

The property was clean and comfortable. The kitchen had all the basics we needed to cook some meals. The home is above an art gallery and shares the back yard/beach access with another small rental below. Parking is a bit tight, especially with a full size suv. It was a great location to explore all of the north shore. Lance was very friendly and easy to work with. Our family of 6 had a great time and enjoyed our stay.
