Location - easy walk to main street shops and cafes. Bathroom handbasin has been renovated. Heated towel rail in bathroom. Used bathroom as a drying room for washing. Hot water was good.
The history of the house is interesting and the outside looks great when you first arrive however, once inside, the house is rundown and looks like a renovation that hasn't been finished e.g. lots of paint tins & tool boxes in laundry area, walls coverings some sort of paper or material that has buckled & doesn't meet dado rails, door jams or ceiling in places, pine door frames unfinished , kitchen cupboards - even suggested in information book to not use for storing food, ripped blinds on window. The furniture looked like it was picked up cheaply from a 2nd hand shop or was someones old furniture e.g. kitchen chairs have metal coating peeling off the legs, and some are quite stained. It is definitely not period furniture to match any era of the houses history. Refridgerators adequate only with no ability to store frozen food. The bedroom with bunks smells musty. Heating in the house - there are 2 wood fires, which is fine if staying for a period of time but a lot of work for a short stay. The heat pump in the lounge room looks old and questionable when filters last cleaned. I did find a column oil heater covered in thick dust that I cleaned and used in the main bedroom effectively, which gave me one warm room in the house. Had to use the heater in the bathroom extensively to keep the carpet in the bathroom dry. There was a number of used soap bars left in the bathroom and shower.

We love old homes and finding out about its history and location.Although old it Ozzie’s character and has a cozy feel to it..
We loved it and have no complaints or criticism about a truely character home..

Good price for a basic accommodation
Got emailed wrong code for keys and had to ring person and we had a late arrival time so he wasn't very happy

Location was great
Cluttered and could use some love and touch ups

House was quaint. Living and dining rooms nice and comfortable.
Toilet was broken - the water was leaking from the cistern into the bowl, so we were instructed via a note left in the laundry to fill up water containers to pour into the cistern before flushing toilet! Toilet seat broken. Extremely cold house with not enough wood for wood heater, which was too small to generate enough heat for the house. Hot water in shower required to run along time before becoming hot. Used soap bars left in shower. Kettle and microwave could not be used together. Mice were running across living room floor. Mice dirt through out cupboards. Beds uncomfortable. My son slept with 2 doonas. Their are holes in the walls in the bedroom.

The house showcases the heritage of the family who owns the property. It feels homey and reminds me of the Dunedin.

The location was great for our visits to Mt Cook and Geraldine, especially as the roads are easy driving in the area. The property itself had all the requirements for our stay including plenty of hot water (all basics like shampoo, soap etc are provided too), fluffy towels, soft carpets in the living areas and complimentary tea, coffee and snacks, the latter an added bonus for our hiking activities. The local shops were just around the corner (The Bakehouse to be especially recommended and staff at the local Four Square were friendly and helpful) and the Silverstream Hotel and Carnegie's Restaurant were both welcoming, with excellent food.
Visitors should bear in mind that this is a heritage property otherwise they may be a little surprised at the condition of things like the wallpaper in some of the rooms and the basic kitchen facilities but they were all perfectly adequate.

Proximity to supermarket, coffee, petrol all within 500m. Big back yard for parking, backyard cricket, footy etc. Cosy living with log burner and a cracking record collection. Seperate living ares for kids and adults.
not having a bbq

The Old Forge is in a really quiet location but easy work to town. It is very comfortable and feels like staying in a good friends house. We had everything we needed, it was very clean and the fires were great - lovely to have such dry firewood.

The old forge is a very old house in quiet Fairlie. The old house has its charme and you can feel the time the house has already been here. There are lots of things to explore in the house. The records and the fire place really are gorgeous. Also it is not far away from Lake Tekapo.
You also has to understand that it is an old house and so everything is askew and the wooden floor creaks. I really liked it!
Not all windows can be opened.

The Old Forge is in the centre of Fairlie and everything you need is a short walk away. I was very impressed with the fabulous record collection which I studied and listened to at length. There is also an extraordinary book collection from mathematics, classic novels, Beatles biographies and more. Very impressed with the mountain of firewood and kindling available for the lounge woodburner, which kept the living, dining and master bedroom very cosy all night. The 6 inches of snow that fell during my stay was a real bonus, but not all guests should expect that!
I couldn't get the TV and Freeview services working, but it didn't matter. Who needs TV with such a great collection of vinyl!

Amazing value for money. A proper kiwi crib, including all the delightful quirks. Clean and warm. Amazing record collection and eclectic book collection. Can't wait to return.
We loved everything. Sorry! :)

Well equipped home. Comfortable bed. Plenty of firewood to keep the fires burning on a cold night

Had character. You knew families had been raised there. 2 open fires and plenty of wood. Clean. Great value for money.

Fairlie is a lovely little town, and the ‘Old Forge’ was a wonderful, historic place to stay.
The fires kept the place warm and cosy and there was plenty of room for us all. Chris the host was very easy to communicate with.
Would definitely stay again. :)

Location, very close to town centre. Felt like a real bach, with old fittings and furniture. The logburner quickly heated the kitchen/living room.
A light outside the back door would have been handy
4.2
homely and comfortable
4.2
The two front rooms were nice and sunny and warm with the fire. It was very relaxing to sit in during the evenings listening to music in front the fire.
The dark gray paint on the outside walls.

Great communication with the host

Located in a quiet street yet in the town center.
The charm of an old house but with lots of comfort and warmth (heatpump in lounge area and fire places + heaters in the bedrooms).
Really ideal for a family, it really felt like home after two nights only
Everything was great

We had so much listening to the records into the evening, playing board games and doing a jigsaw. The place reminded us of our childhood days at our grandparents house. So much to love. Roomy and lovely clean beds and towels. Lots of little extras like bathroom toiletries and kitchen basics.

It is a heritage house so old,
The house is close to the shops etc.
We think it could have been cleaner, with cobwebs and dust everywhere it's not a good look. the main bed was a bit lumpy,
Toilet had to filled manually, no washing line, and lots of rubbish out side the back, not sure if the place was getting done up or what, but for the money it should have been cleaner.
Lounge suit a bit low for us.
The floors are uneven and bouncy but expected for it's age I guess.
We were booked in for 3 nights but only stayed for 2,
We cleaned up dishes etc as asked to do in the book washed sheets, towels etc and put them on an airier as no line or dryer.
Don't think we should have been asked to do the cleaning.
