About this house rental
The Tannery was built ca. 1820 on Old Germantown Road, an historic central byway, which in its heyday was an important part of revolutionary Virginia and used for the exploration of the then western frontier. Constructed with handmade brick and heart pine beams, The Tannery was initially a blacksmith shop, a tannery and a relay station for riders to obtain fresh horses.
In 1997, The Tannery was updated, remodeled and furnished with antiques. Large double back porches overlook two streams, a lovely treed half acre and the Alleghany Mountains. The Warm Springs Stream flows through the rear of the property, with warm mineral water around 75-85 degrees depending on whether it has rained or the air temperature is cool. There is a small pool and waterfall for a unique soaking experience day or night. To the side of the house, a cold artisan spring trickles through watercress to meet the Warm Springs Stream.
Within walking distance, the center of Warm Springs village is a charming step back into time. The newly renovated Warm Springs Pools are a quarter mile from The Tannery. The village is 5 miles north of the historic Homestead Hotel. Wonderful restaurants are abundant including pubs. The area is also surrounded by State and National Park land with plenty of out door activities. Or just relax on the main porch of The Tannery: read, bird watch, or nap. The Tannery is the perfect place for a romantic getaway or an activity filled weekend. Come enjoy the beautiful mountains of Virginia.
Amenities: Parking, Fireplace, Wifi, VCR & Tapes, CDs & Stereo, Full Kitchen, Microwave, Toaster Oven, Two Refrigerators, Cooking utensils provided, AC Window Units in bedrooms, Mini Split, Fans, Linens provided, Laundry facilities, Maid service. We also have lawn services that come mid week during the summer.

My wife and I just enjoyed the nicest weekend at The Tannery. This is a historic old brick building that is comfortably rustic. We slept on the sleeping porch which we hadn’t done in decades, and which was really fun, listening to the sounds, looking at the moon rise, the stars and then the sun rise. So fun. The property has a creek that is the runoff from the Warm Springs Pools so it is warm and easy to get into. We were in walking distance to the Pools and also to the first class Waterwheel Restaurant and on the way back from dinner a yearling bear stood up and checked us out before bounding off. Highly recommend this property for a Warm Springs visit!

Super adorable property right on the warm springs. 90% of our time was spent either on the back porch or down by the springs. The springs are nice and neat not snaky or weedy. They are indeed great for soaking and floating. We did unfortunately have mice in the house so if you have an issue with those check with the property owner to see if they have vacated. There were also quite a few small spiders and webs inside. The kitchen had ants but we seemed to have finally gotten rid of them by the end of our stay. The place is within easy walking to the little town and close to other local attractions. Be sure to look up at the stars at night while you are there! I'd stay here again inspite of our creature friends that we had.

What a great place rustic and charming!!!!!
It was our first getaway with our dog Bala, and we choose the Tannery because they allowed pets.
The back yard was a dream come true for Bala. She enjoyed running all over the place. We brought along our badminton set and had some fierce games between my wife, son and me.
We all enjoyed the beds on the screen upper deck especially during the rain that rolled through the first night.
The stream out back was the cherry on top. The sound of it from the back decks was soothing and my son and I enjoyed catching minnows with our hands. Even Bala approved of the stream.
The only thing I would say as an improvement would be some memory foam topper for the beds.

kitchen was well supplied with things needed for cooking.
There are nice restaurants in the area but we were too tired to dress or bother with calling for a reservation, The porch is a nice place to relax and eat. We had a 25 lb dog with us and the road is pretty quiet so easy to walk pet. There is an upstairs sleeping porch with twin beds which I think children would love. They could watch the fireflies as they feel asleep.

Every time I come to the area, I stay in the Tannery, because it is magical. For those who love rustic, historic charm and a beautiful setting, the Tannery is perfection for a couple or small family. Sitting in the natural pool that is formed by Warm Springs Run is the experience of a lifetime--it's from the spring that feeds the amazing historic bathhouses down the road. If you don't feel like paying $30 for a soak, the natural pool at the Tannery provides a charming alternative. Of course, the water is cooler by the time it gets there. But it is still clear, refreshing, and full of minerals. If you are not the soaking type, then you'll love sitting on the two back porches. Such a memorable retreat for those who value slowing down, enjoying a peaceful natural setting, and escaping from modernity into a rustic past.

My husband and I thought The Tannery was the perfect place to stay for our anniversary. We weren't looking for modern amenities, and between its size and its age, it reminded us of several places we have lived in the past. The Warm Springs Stream pool and waterfall were wonderful. The water was just the right temperature (not hot and not cold), and the privacy was appreciated. We enjoyed our stay very much.

We picked the perfect time to visit this beautiful property. The air was cool and all the leaves were turning brilliant fiery shades of orange, red, and yellow. Steam rose from the springs each chilly morning, and in the afternoon, we climbed in and enjoyed the warm water after a long hike at the nearby trail. Saturday evening we ate at the Waterwheel Restaurant, and it was wonderful! I recommend this property to anyone, and look forward to coming back for a longer stay. :)

We loved our weekend stay at the Tannery! The backyard stream was invigorating. Despite the morning October chill, we enjoyed the backyard water before our soak at nearby Jefferson pool. Dinner and drinks at Waterwheel Restaurant were within walking distance. The porches were tranquil with the sound of the stream. Our stay refreshed us!

Another enjoyable stay at such a quaint house. It was so convenient to several activities that we had planned. Great communication with no issues at all.

This property was absolutely amazing!!! It was like taking a step back in time, and when we walked in the door it felt like the house was wrapping its arms around us and giving us a big hug to welcome us in. The back yard and the two porches were simply gorgeous, and the creek running along the back of the property was warm and wonderful!! We will definitely be staying here again!

Nice small place. Comfortable, love the yard and stream, plenty hot water, loved it! Very private. Unique opportunity to have the warm springs creek. We enjoyed it. We’ll be back!

The property advertised a private dipping pool of 90 degree water which would be a hot spring. But there is no spring on the property just a creek. House was ok but overall pricery without a hot spring. Contacted owner who said it is sometimes warm depending on the weather. That the Warm Springs Pools were up the road. We have been to those and they tend to be crowded. Our whole purpose of renting this property was for the spring. We did not stay. I had a family emergency and we had to leave not long after we arrived. I suggest the property description be changed so others wont be as disappointed as we were..

We had a magical stay at this property! Given it’s historic nature, be sure to expect lower ceilings and uneven floors. However, that only added to the magic of the location! It truly felt like being transported back in time (with the amenities of clean bed sheets and a warm shower, of course!). The spring at the back of the property truly is a hot spring. We would definitely recommend staying here. Our only suggestion would be to message the host ahead of your stay about the location of the key. Additionally, please note that the only television on the property is an old CRTV with vhs attachment. Our stay was focused on a visit to the Hot Springs and touring Bath County, so this wasn’t an issue for us.

This was an incredible experience from start to finish. The hosts were so responsive from the very moment that I contacted them. They were a complete joy to work with. The check-in and check-out process was easy and the stay was one of the most relaxing places we have ever been. We were fascinated by the history of the house. The two back porches overlooked a lush lawn with the soothing sounds of the "warm springs" streaming along the back of the property. The upstairs had two nice size bedrooms with comfortable queen beds. There was plenty of room in the bathroom as well. Downstairs included a cozy den/kitchen combination with a half bath. The house had such a comfortable feel with nicely appointed antique furniture and accessories and family photos. It was located at the end of a very quiet road. It was the perfect place for a beautiful stroll leading into the quaint village. There was also ample parking off of the street right next to the property. We couldn't have asked for a better stay! Many thanks to our wonderful hosts. We can't wait to come back for another visit.

Great property
We loved the property. It is in a great location. We especially liked the ambience created by the wood burning stove. The sound of the creek and taking a dip in the hot spring. We could hear the coyotes each night as well, which was a nice experience. We very much appreciated being able to bring our dog with us, which is a must when looking for vacation properties.

This rental offered the perfect retreat. We could not have enjoyed our stay in Warm Springs more. The location is convenient to many adventurous trails, and memorable sights…and everyone should experience the warm springs. Absolutely a must for those that truly want to escape the modern world and step back to less complicated times.

Unique and wonderful
If you are looking to get away this is a place you should look at - Quaint, unique and fun. House is small and cozy and appointed well. Bed is comfy, couch is not. These was no TV but that was fine with us. Great time to read, listen to music and relax. We had coffee down by the hot spring every morning and then sat in the soothing water and relaxed for an hour to start of days. It is a great find!

Relaxing home, attentive ownwrr
My friend and I stayed for the Virginia women’s senior golf tournament. Held at the homestead, it was an a easy drive from this property to golf! The big backyard with a small creek and the back patio were wonderful. The owners were very attentive and answered every question. We highly recommend the Tannery for a quiet and beautiful get away!

Just what we were hoping for!
The highlights of this lovely house were the sleeping porch and the warm creek! The pictures and description were accurate, house was clean and welcoming, and we had everything we needed. There was a minor issue during our stay, but the owners were very responsive and helped resolve the situation quickly. All in all, we highly recommend a stay at The Tannery!

Peaceful rest
If you are someone who likes sharp corners, symmetry or modern appointments then don't rent the Tannery. But if you are someone who likes the piece and quiet of a country setting with the pleasant sound of a creek in the background, fireworks of fireflies at night and the occasional beaver or deer walking across your backyard then consider this lovely old but well maintained home. My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay and the quiet of the location along with the wonderful restaurant, "The Water Wheel" within walking distance. While we took advantage of local hiking, biking along the Jackson River and a soak or two in the creek out back we still came away rested and glad we stayed.

Warm Springs for the Win!
What a lovely stay at the Tannery! As a person who frequents rental properties several times a year to escape NYC living, I was super impressed by this trip. The house was exactly as described on VRBO and made for such a tranquil week in beautiful Warm Springs. Literally. The springs on the property are warm and inviting and really made us feel super relaxed. The sleeping porch did not fail to disappoint and the lawn was so massive that my pup was exhausted after running around all day, every day. Mimi and Jack were extremely responsive with any questions we had and were excellent hosts. I would highly recommend this property for anyone looking for a unique one of a kind stay. I hope to visit again soon!

Loved it
Loved the history of the place, and feeling like I was in a rustic historic cabin. The steam coming off the warm spring was so neat in the mornings or at night. Cooked quite a bit in the small kitchen, which was fine since it was open layout and no tight spaces. I loved hearing the creek but not so much the vehicular traffic on nearby 39. Thankfully it is a less traveled road and it was quiet at night. The sleeping porch was probably the neatest thing ever.
Above all, the communication with the host, Mimi, was stellar and what made this possible. I was honest with her and requested approval for both my hairless Sphynx kitty and adding two adults and two infants last minute for one of the nights. We worked together on some solutions. She was very accommodating. Thank you! Wish I had stayed longer. The area is gorgeous -- driving on US 220 is the most scenic and relaxing drive in the fall (from Falling Springs Falls about 20 min south to Monterrey about 40 min north). There is also an IGA grocery 5 miles away in Hot Springs.

Wonderful screened in porch, awesome swimming hole!
We had a very relaxed, enjoyable time at the Tannery. Even though you can feel every spring in twin beds on the screened porch, we loved soldering there, enjoying the stars and the sounds of the creek. The warm-ish swimming hole (maybe 8x8 feet) was the highlight—we swam as early as 9:20 and as late as 9:30. A few great dining options nearby, including at the historic and beautiful Omni Hotel about 15 minutes away. The hotel also has lots of activities. Grocery store is about 15 minutes away (note the Tannery only has a mini-fridge). We spent a day at Meemaw lake, about 40 minutes away—small boat rentals and nice swim area with a beach. All and all, a lovely place!

Lovely Respite
Absolutely loved our stay at The Tannery. Our hosts Jack and Mimi were quick to respond to our questions upon arrival. The quaint historic cottage surrounded by all the natural beauty of Bath County was the perfect relaxing getaway. While opportunities for gourmet meals and shopping can be found nearby, we chose this location as a place to retreat and enjoy the natural surroundings. We particularly enjoyed the sleeping porch - watching a beautiful night sky while listening to the distant springs was the perfect remedy for a great night's sleep. After fishing on the Jackson and daily mountain hikes to beautiful vistas we "took to the waters" of the historic warm springs on the property. It is completely understandable why they are said to have healing powers. Counting the days until we can return!

Pleasant stay
We really enjoyed staying at The Tannery. We were very comfortable, loved the sleeping porch and the stream, were able to cook some nice meals, ate breakfast on the porch. The property is beautiful, and we enjoyed walking down the road to Warm Springs and driving around the area. Lunch at the Gallery Cafe was great, as were sandwiches from the Dairy nearby. As noted in some of the other reviews, we also noticed that the house could use a good "spring cleaning". While a little rustic, it's beautifully decorated and for the price, should have the cobwebs cleared away more often. Overall, though, we loved it.

Wonderful, relaxing visit out of the city
We had a wonderful experience at the Tannery. The inside was cozy and clean. We spent most of our time on the lovely back deck and really enjoyed listening to the sounds of nature on the sleeping porch. We also enjoyed our dip in the spring and some walks to the small village nearby. The owners also were great to communicate with and accommodated some additional requests of ours. Would love to come again!

Amazing place
The Tannery is a true gem. We really enjoyed the private warm spring experience in the backyard! It’s not your typical rental: it’s a place where history and nature come together in a unique and memorable way, so you come back rejuvenated and hungry for more. The owners are nice and easy to communicate with. The property has all you need for a comfortable stay. It is not a hotel room, but we didn’t come looking for one. The bedroom on the screened porch was our kids favorite, and breakfasts on the deck surrounded by the beautiful sounds of the springs and birds were so relaxing. We really want to come back someday!

lovely house and property
Didn't get the full experience, as it rained all week and the creek was chilly, but enjoyed ourselves, nonetheless. Sleeping porch is the best!
Little bit of an ant challenge that can be easily remedied with a trash can with a lid that seals. Otherwise great! We hope to come back to Warm Springs.
