About this house rental
Hale Ma‘ukele is a large, well decorated home located near the heart of Volcano Village and 1 mile from Volcano National Park. It has 2.5 baths, 3 bedrooms, 4 beds, a large living area, and a 4 person hot tub. We have a fully equipped kitchen, washer and dryer, hot tub, a nice back yard, and a back deck with a gas grill. The house is set in the native forest with giant Hapu‘u ferns, ‘o‘hia trees, and native birds all around.
My wife and I moved here in 2006 with our kids, designed and built this house with other family. For the nest year we worked on the landscaping, and decorated it with local art and photography. The house has its own solar energy and filtered, drinkable catchment water.
The house has a open floor plan downstairs and lots of windows to look out on the rainforest. It is a good layout for large groups or families as it facilitates connection, but also has private feeling bedrooms upstairs that have some separation from each other. The master bedroom has its own bathroom, and there is another full bathroom upstairs for the other two bedrooms. We have a laundry room with a washer and dryer, a smart TV with high speed wifi.
The back deck gets sun and is a great place to drink coffee, eat, relax and grill. The hot tub is set in a private corner of the property in the rainforest and is a great place to unwind after a day of activity at Volcanoes National Park or somewhere else.
We are a 5 minute drive to Volcanoes National Park and a 2 minute drive to Volcano Village. Volcano is a cute little town with a few restaurants, general stores, a community center, playground, and a nice farmers market on Sundays.
Volcano is at 3500 feet in a high elevation tropical rainforest, so it is never too hot. It can be chilly and damp depending on the weather, so it is nice to have the mini split heater.

Love this place!

There were no screens on the windows (and no ac); therefore we could not open the windows due to insects, so it was too warm at night to sleep.
The master suite was nice, but the other bedrooms were insufficiently furnished (barely a bedside table and nowhere to put clothes)
The washing machine had mold, so we didn't use it.
One bathroom had blue tape all around the window and was jerry-rigged with a piece of wood (and did not open)
There were insufficient towels (very much so).
There were far fewer utensils, pots, etc than I am accustomed to in other VRBO.
It was filthy under the living room couch cushion.
Kind of annoying to see a lot of signs about "don't do this or that" when in fact the place was inadequate.

Great stay in a great location! Everything was as shown and it was very peaceful! The singing frogs were a wonderful bonus😊

Convenient and beautiful home! The house is only 2 miles from Volcanoes Park entrance, which made for a short trip to the rental after spending a long day at the park. We love the community. Each house is secluded within trees & ferns, like you're in your own private jungle. We were on Maui for a week, and walking into this home was the first time I heard my 13 & 15 yr old grandkids say WOW. The house was beautiful. We loved the hand-crafted support posts, the floors, the back deck, the vaulted ceilings, and that it had 3 bedrooms was perfect for our family of 4 adults & 2 kids. The bed and pilllows were comfy. The master BR has a private bathroom. The other 2 bedrooms shared a hall bath ( all upstairs). The couch was comfy, for the short time we were there. I can find nothing negative to say. The owner was quick to respond to emails, and helpful at providing info on local recommendations. We ate at Lava Rock Cafe for dinner and it was excellent ( burger and fries were about $20-$23/pp). Would DEF stay again if we come back!

Beautiful, private jungle-like property in a semi-arid location. All necessities supplied as advertised.

The house was perfect. Located super close to the park. Jacuzzi was nice to have in the back area at night was lit up nicely. Plenty of space for the family to relax inside the house and on the back patio. Definitely staying here again in the near future.

Beautiful home with the perfect location for a visit to Volcanoes National Park. Unfortunately we had an issue checking in because the Vrbo website and app were down and so we were unable to access the check-in codes. While that is not the Host's fault, we tried to reach him via Vrbo messaging and phone (call and text) and he was not available (we were checking in at 5pm local time). Luckily we were able to reach Vrbo customer service and after several lengthy calls with them, they were able to assist with entry into the home. However, this was disappointing, as the Host should be available around the check-in time to assist with any issues.

The home is beautifully designed and furnished, well-appointed and very comfortable for 3 couples. A soak in the hot tub surrounded by rainforest, birdsong and the trill of frogs is magical. The house is a 5-minute drive from the National Park, and an even shorter drive (or walk) to the heart of Volcano Village.

Very clean and well stocked home. Great hot tub in the rainforest.

We absolutely loved our stay here! Clean and beautiful with nice amenities, we wished we could have stayed here longer! Hot tubbing at night with the lights and the frog song was magical. And it was nice to be so close to Hawai’i Volcanoed National Park. We loved it and would highly recommend a stay here!

We loved the open floor plan and all of the space at the house. The kitchen was big enough for five of us to work in at once! We enjoyed the hot tub, even during the rain.
The location is excellent. It was easy to find, which isn't always the case in Volcano. It's very close to the park.
We have already recommended it to friends and would definitely stay again.

The property was clean and as stated. I only wish the lights to the hot tub were not on most of the night as the light shown into one bedroom

We loved our stay at this beautiful, spacious home. We hiked in Volcano National Park all day and came back to a quiet place to stay with a lovely hot tub...perfect for our sore muscles. The location is super close to the park and nearby to the delicious dinner we enjoyed at Kilauea Lodge.

Very nice place, well maintained and as advertised. Just a couple of miles from the park entrance and far enough off of the main road to enjoy the quiet of the forest.

This was an amazing house that was well stocked with amenities (in the kitchen, bedrooms, and bathrooms). The hot tub in the rainforest was an amazing retreat after exploring Volcano NP (and has a little canopy so is enjoyable when rainy too). The wood inside is amazing. The communication with the owners and maintenance/housekeeping staff was excellent. We highly recommend this rental house and would definitely go back!

This was a perfect place to stay on our visit to the Big Island and visiting the National Park. It was very clean and the host gave us some helpful tips for dinner and exploring the area. Our only disappointment is that our stay wasn't longer.

This house is very nice and was perfect for our 2 night stay. It has a beautiful wood staircase and an awesome covered deck. We really appreciated the quiet neighborhood and close proximity to the Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. Definitely recommend this house to anyone visiting Volcano.

This home was incredible, super clean and had beautiful unique touches. The inside was very comfortable and cozy, and outside was amazing too. It was nice to relax in the hot tub, which felt like a tropical magic hideaway in the backyard, and the back deck was another nice place to relax.

Comfortable 2-story cabin hidden in tropical foliage. Beautiful hardwood floors throughout and functional kitchen with everything you need.
Living room, dining room, kitchen and half bath downstairs.
Bedrooms are up a relatively steep set of stairs. Master bedroom with a king size bed is very spacious. Two other bedrooms with full bath between also upstairs.
Very tropical setting with line of lights on a timer to the secluded hot tub. Large air conditioner and ceiling fan both cools and warms up the house. It does get cool (50 degrees) at night.
We enjoyed our 2-night stay.

Volcano vacation rental houses are hit or miss, but this one was super clean, and everything worked. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.

The house has plenty of room for adults and kids. There were only three of us so we had plenty of beds.
Very secluded property in a lovely rainforest environment. We saw native birds and a wild pig.

We stayed one night at this wonderful, peaceful house. It’s the little things that were really appreciated. We arrived later than expected- after dark in the rain and they left the outside light on for us. It is pretty dark in Volcano at night (No street lights, etc) so that was a welcomed relief. There was ample seasonings for cooking and coffee and tea for the morning. The rainforest sounds at night were really fascinating and we absolutely loved the hot tub after a long day of hiking and driving, The morning brought a lot of interesting birds to the yard.
Wish we would have stayed an additional night as the house was really cozy and a cool part of our trip. Pretty neat that the home owner designed, built and lived in the house before. Loved all the wood and overall warm vibes. We’d definitely stay here again.

Place was nice and everyone was impressed and happy. Three things though: 1) Door nearest garage would not lock. Tumbler just turned loosely. 2) The 1/2 bath had some 'brown dots' in the toilet. Easy for me to clean. 3) Master bed had a ball of hair when I pulled back the covers. Not a strand or two but a ball like you would find on the floor. Luckily I found (2) and (3) and didn't mention to anyone but it made me wonder what they might not have told me.

Beautiful house, perfectly located to hike on the volcanos. Well furnished, clean. The spa was a great add on as it’s a bit chilly in the evenings. Area is very quiet.

As a family of 5 adults from 21 to 84, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. LOVED the hot tub in the woods!! Our only suggestion would to be to have a sofa bed downstairs. Since all bedrooms are upstairs, my amputee 84 year old husband could not use the bedroom upstairs. He slept on the couch because there was no other choice. Otherwise, we loved this house & location. Definitely would recommend it to anyone.

House was absolutely as advertised and we couldn’t have been happier! Kitchen well equipped, everything worked great, and so close to the park! Would absolutely stay again, and hope to!

A charming, modern home in the middle of the rain forest on the slopes of Mauna Loa, a 5 minute drive from Volcano National Park. We also rented it’s sister property next door for our family of 14. The coquis chirping at night were delightful. Thus place is a winner, and very well maintained.

This was a perfect spot for spending a couple days in Volcano National Park. It is minutes from the park and had plenty of space for 5 people. We cooked breakfast, lunch and dinner here and had everything we needed. The property manager was great with communication and the listing is extremely helpful and accurate. I would definitely stay here again.

We loved the house. The woodwork was beautiful, the fireplace/stove was great in cold mornings and evenings, and it was nice for my two teenagers to have separate sleeping locations. Being so close to Volcano National Park was a plus and I wish we would have had time to explore the hot tub.
The amenities were good, but missing just a couple very inexpensive items. If I would have known I would have just brought them and left them for other guests to enjoy. These include a second hand towel in the upstairs bathrooms (especially in the master with two sinks), a washable dish cloth in the kitchen (used wet sponges harbor bacteria), and a box of tissues.
Thank you for a great stay!
