About this house rental
We are excited to be opening our calendar for the upcoming months of September, October and November, a wonderful time to visit the Sonoma Wine Country, free from the hustle and bustle of the summer tourist season. After 15 years, this will be our last season offering our beautiful Hilltop Oasis home and gardens for your enjoyment as next Spring we will be selling and moving onto our next adventure on Old Cape Cod!
Our one acre property sits atop Taylor Mountain, 15 minutes southeast of downtown Santa Rosa. This private home is clustered within a small community of houses that are surrounded by ranches and vineyards, affording breathtaking views above most summer fog, but still affording cooler summer temperatures that make air conditioning unnecessary! Sebastopol, Petaluma, Kenwood and Glen Ellen are 20 minutes away and the historic town of Sonoma, Russian River Valley, Healdsburg and the Bodega Coast are just 30 minute drives. The excitement of downtown San Francisco is an hour or so away. Charles Schulz Airport, host to American/Alaska/Avelo airlines is just a short 20 minute drive.
This classic California mid-century Ranch style home, was designed by a Danish architect in the early 70's with high ceilings and an open floorplan, hosting a chef's kitchen. The living/dining/family room opens to covered terraces, perfect for year-round alfresco dining and cooking on the grill next to the pool. A cozy sitting area/library with 100's of varied titles to browse is nestled around a wood burning fireplace. The Master bedroom has bathroom en-suite and affords a wake up view of the valley below. The second bedroom has an en-suite bath with tub. Both bedrooms have queen beds.
The gardens have been designed by the landscape architect owner and have been featured in Sunset Magazine/Western Garden Book, Better Homes and Gardens and other publications. Many garden rooms with different themes such as the English Mixed Border, the Sunset Perennial Hill, the Vegetable Terraces, the Lookout Point, The Maple Dell, have many different places to sit, matching any particular mood. There are two water features and a pond full of colorful fish. The solar heated, salt water swimming pool shares the BBQ terrace with a nearby hot/cold outdoor shower that can be used after sundown under a star filled or even rainy sky. A 4 person Jacuzzi is heated at all hours to 104 degrees and nestled under a shady arbor on the expansive redwood deck. Skinny dipping is encouraged around the completely private pool area.
There is even garden area designed specifically for small weddings (up to 45 people and additional charges will occur).
Wildlife watching abounds, especially with the morning birds queuing up to be first in the feeder. Bluejays wait to be treated to peanuts and clumsy quail, sometimes 20 at a time jump up on the terrace wall in search of breakfast. Hawks, Geese, Woodpeckers and hungry Herons fly overhead and Owls serenade at night. Deer, fenced out of the gardens, browse below and an occasional fox can be seen at sundown along with turkeys roosting in the oaks.
Wineries, Armstrong Woods, Annadel State Park, the Prince Memorial Bike Trail along Santa Rosa Creek, Sugarloaf State Park, the Valley of the Moon, Lake Sonoma, Historic Petaluma, the Charles Shultz Museum, Luther Burbank Gardens, The Green Music Center are local attractions that are close by. Downtown Santa Rosa with Historic Railroad Square and Montgomery Village is home to numerous restaurants, bookshops, antique shops, museums and theaters.

I don’t want to ruin any surprises, but this place is perfect. So much so that I didn’t want to leave and asked to extend! The host is the kindest, friendliest, most generous host I’ve ever experienced, and meeting him at the check in made the stay even better because it was obvious he really cared about the guest’s stay and it made the place feel so warm and cheerful instead of impersonal. His backyard is paradise and I did not want to leave the property. This is actually the first review I’ve written in my life about anything, if that gives you any indication. You won’t regret staying here unless you are looking for an in-town experience. If you like a more quiet, private and relaxing stay with short drives to all the local hotspots, this is for you.

We stayed at Richard and Diego's "oasis" because it was centrally located amongst Napa, Sonoma and Russian River vineyards. We soon realized after each trip, we were looking forward to our return to the house to experience the wine, the views and al the hard work the owners put into this property!

We had 2 couples in our party enjoying a vacation of wine, dining, and oysters.
The owner, an architect and landscape architect by trade, has made his home into a warm, immaculate place to live and visit. The landscaping has multiple terraces with hidden nooks in every corner, and the panoramic view is beautiful from this hilltop oasis.
The inside is tastefully decorated and inviting with a number of places to lounge. As couples who love to cook, we were very pleased with the extensive kitchen. The beds were very comfortable with each bedroom having an en suite bathroom and shower.
If you're a couple or 2 couples wanting a rental that will make it hard to leave during the day, this is the place. Overall, this is top home we've rented over the years.

I can't say enough about this gorgeous property! Richard was a great host. My friends and I had everything we needed and more. The property is just as described but MORE BEAUTIFUL. The gardens were breathtaking! We couldn't get enough of gazing at the beautiful display outside as well as the beautiful touches of cut flowers inside. Everyday we spent there, we discovered something new and wonderful.

I cannot say enough good things about this beautiful home! The gardens are incredible--the pictures don't fully do justice to how extensive and lush they are. Richard was an excellent host: he gave us a tour, checked to make sure we were comfortable, and gifted us some delicious produce from the garden! We did less wine tasting than we'd planned because it seemed like such a shame to leave the pool and the view. We will absolutely be back to this terrific property.

Everything was kept up so that the visitors' stay was relaxing, and a feast for the eyes. Artistic touches everywhere, quality and lovely aesthetics in every corner, inside and out. Quiet, comfortable, and easy to get to grocery stores. We spent 90% of our day in the pool and hot tub. We ate from the organic garden and wanted for nothing!

There are not enough superlative adjectives to describe this exquisite property that Richard & Diego have created on a hilltop with stunning vistas of Sonoma County. So lovely to explore the award-winning lush landscaping with tucked-away restful seating areas, a prolific vegetable garden & fruit trees. Richard welcomed us with a basketful of just-picked veggies, the most aromatic basil & his home-made jam. The 2 bedroom, 2 bath home was the perfect size. for 2 couples to share. We were so thrilled with the outdoor grill & dining areas that we cancelled our restaurant reservations for the week end & made 2 memorable meals there. Thank you Richard & Diego. We can't wait to return!

We had an amazing time at Richard and Diego's property! Hilltop Oasis is exactly what it is- from the immaculate garden and landscape to the pool/hot tub and grill. We really enjoyed our stay and Richard was an awesome host (even provided us with fresh produce from his garden that we enjoyed throughout our stay). We hope to return in the future- thank you!!

Richard and Diego’s place was truly magical. My friends and I were blown away by the beautifully curated and manicured garden that surrounds the property. You can see the love, care, and hard-work on every corner of garden and house. We throughly enjoyed the heated pool and Jacuzzi… along with the gorgeous views and nature that seamlessly encompassed us. Just amazing!

My friend and I had a very relaxing stay over a long holiday weekend. The owner was kind and welcoming and gave us a thorough tour of the property and grounds. The beauty of the stunning Vista, colorful gardens and meticulously cared for grounds cannot be appreciated by mere words. The beds were comfortable and sleep was peaceful in this home. All amenities were well thought out and abundant home grown fruit and home made jarred goods were provided by the owners. The house is on a mountain top, but still very close to fine markets, the casino, and restaurants downtown which was very convenient. We had planned some additional activities around the area, but once we saw this Shangri la, we realized that we didn't want to leave to sightsee as much so we could enjoy the quiet serenity of bird and gecko watching, swimming, soaking and rejuvenating from our busy lives. Mission accomplished! Thank you to our wonderful hosts Ricky and Diego our paths will cross again!

We had a splendid 5-day stay at the Hilltop Oasis. Nestled on a hilltop, the house is surrounded by an acre of stunning landscaping. The jasmines are in full bloom, all the colors that the owner bring and blend together - it's a feast for the senses. The owner, Richard, is generous and shared with us his fruits and vegetables - we are so grateful. The yard is frequented by birds, and we had a wonderful time identifying the species and watching them up close. We have all enjoyed the refreshing pool and the hot tub. All in all, we had a splendid time, and will definitely go back. We had a restorative stay at the Hilltop Oasis, and thank you, Richard, for sharing your house with us.
