Great location, house is really as described. Plenty of room, great kitchen, pool is awesome. Highly recommend.

You can't beat this location! The pool is much bigger than it looks in the photos and has an automatic cover which was really nice. We stayed at the end of June so it was hot without A/C (106 outside) but the pool felt great and was nice and warm. We cooked a handful of meals at the house and it was just a great experience overall.

Overall, we had a fabulous stay with our family. We LOVED the pool and the house was perfect for us. There is a gorgeous view and the location was just what we were looking for. The owner is friendly and personable. It should be noted that there is no central AC, but with the weather in the area, it worked out just fine! The house is spacious and was a great home base for our family during our vacation.

My sister got married in Napa Valley. This was affordable and relatively close by. The property is great and in a quite neighborhood. We walked to a cafe 7 minutes away that was yummy. The hot tub wasnt working but overall 10/10 stay.

We were disappointed with the condition of the house. The house has many redeeming features including the backyard and the kitchen but needs maintenance, cleaning and updating.
We found the house cluttered and the kitchen cabinets and refrigerator in need of cleaning and decluttering.
Also the mattresses in the back bedrooms need to be replaced. Our friends were rolling to the middle in the queen and moved to the twin beds. The daybed in there was not up to par either. We were given one hand towel per couple for three days stay which is unacceptable.
All in all the house was roomy and has good bones but needs major maintenance both inside and out and TLC.

On our stay we had 8 women & enjoyed our stay immensely. Barry had house stocked with all essentials needed. At first we were alarmed about AC being from Louisiana, but it wasn’t even needed due to temps cooling down in evenings. House is very centrally located, everything was so close. Glen Ellen Village & The Mill was so quaint with several restaurants & even wine tasting right there. Sonoma was 45 minutes & Napa Valley an hour away & Oakland Airport was 1.5 hours. Thanks again Barry for a great stay.

Can not say enough about how nice this place is....it was like your own little hidden secret in Glen Ellen. We were greeted by the owner and shown the property. Coming from Florida, it is unusual for a house not to have AC and I was a little concerned BUT the house has a wonderful cross breeze with just one or two windows open and it was never a thought (in fact, it was chilly one night). It was soo nice to come back to after a day of winery tours to enjoy the pool, grill up a tasty steak (the grill is awesome) and just enjoy the back porch (huge w/awning!!). It is located within easy walking distance to the little downtown area. The house has a very homey feeling with a gourmet kitchen. Check out was the easiest I think of anywhere we stayed. There are 2-1/2 baths so as 3 adult friends, we found getting ready in the mornings was very easy. I would highly recommend this place to anyone who is visiting Sonoma County.

We had a wonderful weekend at this property. The house was pretty and clean with a nice large kitchen, and the deck and pool in the back were great places to relax in the mornings and evenings. We would definitely stay here again!

Perfect location, host, and home! We loved staying here and want to come back year after year. We toured Sonoma and truly enjoyed all that Glen Ellen had to offer - a lot! The house was very comfortable for five adults. The pool was perfect! We had a few pool afternoons together and those were some of my favorite moments with my adult children. Absolute fantastic!

I found this lovely home tucked away in a beautiful Glen Ellen neighborhood for our getaway. We loved having this home as our home base for the weekend of relaxing and wine tasting. The house is quite spacious with a well equipped kitchen which we took advantage of. I wish I could recommend some of the yummy restaurants close by but having been out all day wine tasting we enjoyed a home cooked meal and hanging out.
The backyard was a lovely space to enjoy with a deck (fully equipped with seating areas and a grill) to the lower tier with pool and hot tub. The views from the backyard are truly beautiful.
Barry cares for his home and was a good host giving me the grand tour to help get us all oriented.
Thanks for sharing your home with us Barry.

great location, easy walk to town, spacious home

We had a wonderful stay in Sonoma. The house was spacious and clean. It had a lovely kitchen, although we didn’t have occasion to use it much. Barry was helpful and responsive.
4.8
Both the owner Barry and the house were great. Neighborhood is an easy walk into town and an easy drive to many wineries.

First the good. The house is perfectly appointed with everything you need. We had a group of 7 and the house easily accommodated us all. Kitchen is so spacious. The view is outstanding with plenty of seating inside and out. Location is superior for walking to town and market.
Now the bad. The mattress in the 2nd guest room is very bad and needs replacement. The coulple that stayed in the full size bed ended up tacos, sleeping very poorly. My husband and I ended up sleeping in seperate rooms due to the pull out couch being too uncomfortable for two.
Pool is not heated. If you heat the pool owner can charge you up to $800.
The “HotTub” should be called a Soaking Tub as there are no Jets. Additionaly, during our stay the hot tub failed on night two. Water drained out of tub and shut off. There has been no adjustment for our loss from the owner.
Over all the stay was good but future guests need to know there are some issues with the house that could impact your stay

The house was great and within walking distance of Glen Ellen, a really cute town. Barry was available to offer suggestions and answer questions. We had a great trip!

We had a wonderful time at the house . The owner was very detailed in explaining how different things worked . The bedrooms were very comfortable . Great location from shops and restaurants . His recommendations were spot on . We didn’t get to use the pool but the hot tub was lovely in the slightly cool October weather .

Wonderful place to stay. Large and roomy and many areas to enjoy.

The house was great. Built in 1947 but updated throughout while retaining its charm. Great gourmet kitchen with absolutely everything you would need. The backyard and pool are great. We were there in early October so the pool itself was a little cold to swim in but the spa was toasty warm. It is a great house for entertaining but guests should be aware that due to COVID rules, you can't have anyone visit. We ended up moving a family gathering to Sonoma Valley Regional Park which is just 5 minutes away. Shout out to the Glen Ellen Village Market for the excellent catering. All the food was delicious.

Great place for our family. We had a couple kids and several seniors. The kids enjoyed the pool and the older folks enjoyed walking to restaurants in town. Overall great place to stay and quiet.

This is our 2nd time staying at Barry's Gate House, we love the pool, the toys, the village of Glen Ellen and the surrounding area. The house is so spacious, kitchen is well stocked and comfortable layout for our family of 5. We hope to be back for a 3rd time!

An annual family tradition
A stay here has become an annual tradition for the family. Love the heated pool (with cover to make it child safe and plenty of pool toys), short walk to a couple great restaurants and small market in Glen Ellen, and spacious home with huge kitchen.

Peaceful
Overall the property was amazing! The only negative we had concerning the property was the mattress in the guest room. You roll to the center the minute you get in bed.

We had a great time in Glen Ellen and loved the walkability to many conveniences, the short drive to sonoma and many wineries and the Jack London State Park, and the relaxing afternoons by the pool. Plenty of room for our group, too. Our only complaint-mattresses. They were all really old and uncomfortable.

Wonderful time as we attended our daughter’s graduation. Beautiful kitchen that met all our needs. Barry, the owner, was highly attentive. Inside properly was clean, pool was great. Only pause was that the toilet pump in master bathroom needed some attention. Would stay again.

Ultimately, our experience at the Gate House was tarnished due to poor lack of transparency with respect to the availability of the salt water pool and hot tub that are both featured prominently in the listing description for this home - and (at least with respect to the hot tub) are expressly described as included in the rental agreement.
In reality, neither the pool, nor the hot tub, are available during the “colder” periods in Glenn Ellen. This is not disclosed anywhere in the listing or in the welcome materials/guide book at the house, nor did the owner share this information in the communications leading up to our stay, or when he gave us a personal tour of the home upon our arrival. The pool/hot tub were simply covered and the key to open the pool/hot tub is withheld by the owner.
It’s unfortunate because the house has potential for a good stay (it’s located in a quiet neighborhood and a short walk into town with some small shops, tasting rooms and a basic market), but the description in all of the written materials (and communications with the owner) simply don’t match what you’ll actually experience.
For those who are interested in staying, please take note of the lack of availability of the pool/hot tub and factor that into your decision to book this particular home.
