Jenny greeted us warmly and explained the property. Even with so many things to do in the area we decided to spend an entire day just enjoying the peacefulness of the house and property. Paradise. We had a group of howler monkeys spend the morning clambering through the trees around the house. Just loved the whole experience.

This home is more beautiful than the listing suggested. The grounds are lovely and we had a great time.

This beach home is everything one dreams of . Fiona has brought in a night watchman , cameras and lights to light up the dark areas , we felt totally safe and secure. The fresh seafood next door is superb and the friendliest folks . Cabo Blanco is well worth the jungle hike which brings you to the sea, have a swim , bring a lunch and head back. But honestly one doesnt need to do anything but relax on the outside open patio . The wifi was powerful and much appreciated. We were pleasantly surprised by no mosquitoes. The white faced capuchins and mono congos were quite amusing.

My husband and I were the victims of a home invasion and assault. We were on the patio about 8:45 PM when 2 masked men, one with a gun to my husband's head and one with a 7" blade hunting knife at my back ordered us to lay down on the kitchen floor. They ordered my husband (who speaks some Spanish) at gun point to give them all of our money, they took our phones, rental car keys, and miscellaneous gear. They ended up binding my husbands wrists and ankles together and left us with the threat that they would be back if we told anyone. I could go on about the trauma but there's no need, the stars about cleanliness, processes, etc. don't mean anything please believe that this property is NOT SAFE in its current state. DO NOT stay here until the owner has installed a fence, gate, security lights, and cameras. I would ask for proof of these changes. Do not stay in this area, in any house that doesn't have these security measures.

A rustic, artistic and authentic cottage with personality!

Our group of 5 arrived a little after 9PM (and well after dark) after taking the 6 PM ferry at Puntarenas. Thankfully, we had been to Montezuma previously three years ago. Negotiating the roads at night, however, was quite a difference. Among our group were two first-timers to Cost Rica, who were incredulous that we found Los Caracoles in he dark. My advice is to go slow, keep plodding along and heed Fiona's directions. Finding the long bridge definitely helped. I think it is the third bridge from Montezuma.
The house and property were perfect! When at the house and not sleeping, we spent most of our time around the outdoor kitchen table or in the hammocks and chairs on the patio. The outdoor separate bathroom was a definite plus. Most times, the ambient temperature shower was all that was needed and if you wanted a hot shower that was available in the upstairs bathroom. A word of caution - there is a 3-4 inch step down going into the upstairs bathroom and bedroom, easily negotiated once you remember it's there.
The flow of the kitchen/outdoor dining room/outdoor patio fit the lifestyle of our group perfectly. If I am allowed to nitpick, The kitchen was equipped with the necessities, but could have benefitted from more pots and skillets and a microwave oven. That said we cooked most of our breakfasts and dinners "home" and during the day when we were exploring ate lunch at the local sodas. The Isla Restaurante and Habitat were wonderful, especially the fish tacos at the latter. We wanted to try the Coyote (especially the pizza) where Jenni is the owner (also the property manager and very helpful) , but our schedules did not mesh. Would not recommend the pizza from the restaurant (Vegan Resort?) across from the Coyote but the ambiance was nice and the beer was cold (Jenni's place was closed.)
Fresh(!) fish is available at the end of the road on which the Isla Restaurante is located . A wide variety of fish mahi mahi, snapper, etc. as well as shrimp and lobster can be purchased at fair prices. This is also the best spot from which to walk to Cemetery Island during low tide. We didn't try the fisherman two doors down mentioned in previous reviews. That said, you won't go wrong with the fish monger at the end of the road where the bakery and Isla are located. The bakery? Excellent baguettes, desserts, and cinnamon rolls. Check their hours as we missed them several times, but when we did we were happy.

We just left Fiona's beautiful house. The place is not as on the announcement. It is pretty much better!
The house is clean, gorgeous, confortable and well equipped, surrounded by nice tropical garden. We met squirrels, monkeys and many many birds. The garden ends at the beach, very cool to have a walk when tide is low and perfect to swim when up.
You are close from restaurants and places to buy essential food.
Thank you Fiona for letting us have the chance to stay in your house.

We had a wonderful stay at Los Caracoles. We enjoyed the open feel of the home, and spent most of our time relaxing outside , walking along the beach and using the kayaks that are provided. Our highlights were kayaking to the cemetery island, watching the crabs, and looking for the nicest shells on the beach. The house is unique, very well kept, and the kitchen has everything needed to be self sufficient. We were travelling without a car and with our 6 year old daughter, which meant biking to Cabuya village for groceries was part of our enjoyment. The care taker Giovani and cleaner Jenny were both friendly and checked in to make sure we had everything we needed. We would definitely stay again.

We stayed at Los Caracoles for 11 days and have nothing but praise. Loved the rustic quality of the house and property, the location on the quiet rocky beach, and the town of Cabuya. We were visited a number times by families of white faced monkeys, and scarlet macaws flew overhead. Shout out to our neighbour the fisherman, from whom we bought some of the best seafood we've tasted; to the bakery in Cabuya for amazing chocolate cake and torte; and to El Castañito, a lovely local soda. We walked the long trail in Cabo Blanco park at the end of the rainy season, there we saw enormous trees, howler and white faced monkeys, families of coatis, capybara, wild forest turkey, deer, iguanas, butterflies, and many birds. We took the mountain road to Malpais/Santa Teresa and being the end of the rainy season it was quite an adventure. Do not even think about it without a 4x4 and off road experience. The road back to Cabuya through the “doghouse shortcut” was almost as bad if not worse. Be careful with these mountain roads, do not trust Google drive or Waze. The whole area from Montezuma to Cabo Blanco was lovely, no trouble finding beautiful deserted beaches. Loved this place and it would be a dream to return.

Wonderful experience. The space is beautiful, fluid with the nature all around and lovely artistic touches. The neighborhood is great. Everything you need, grocery stores, restaurants; lots to do and explore. Fiona sends a great pdf with lots of suggestions.

We all loved our stay at Los Caracoles and only wish we could’ve stayed longer. The cabin is perfectly located for a natural jungle and beach experience. We enjoyed the rustic and outdoor living. Fiona and Jenny were super helpful and quick to answer any questions. Would love to visit again!

A real Costa Rica experience in a friendly little town.
Los Caracoles is my favorite place in Costa Rica. If you are looking for a real Costa Rica experience in a friendly little town that is a bit out-of-the-way this is the place.

Jungle experience
We really enjoyed our stay in Fiona’s house. The house has a large outdoor patio and the beds upstairs were comfortable. The beach was really great when the tide was high, - very child friendly and our kids spent most of the day in the awesome swing on the beach and playing with the hords of hermit crabs that are everywhere.
The garden was often visited by howler monkeys and capuchin monkeys - we saw more wild life here than in the national park close by.

Paradise y Pura Vida
This property is the quintessential Costa Rican experience. The only way you could be closer to the beach is if you were staying on a boat, everything about the property was perfect and we will definitely be back!

Like Being in Paradise
We loved the house, its rustic and spacious nature. The surroundings were amazing, brimming with all kinds of wildlife. The proximity to the sea was a treat, the sound of the waves in the night and walking along the empty beach. It was incredibly relaxing which was just what we needed. We definitely want to return.

Paradise at one with nature
This beautiful, partially open-air retreat in Cabuya was just what my family needed to reset and slow down! Although the wireless connection is good and strong, we spent our days watching hermit crabs, lizards and birds; picking our own coconuts; and enjoying the beach! Falling asleep under mosquito nets to the sound of the ocean is a magical experience as well.
This property has the good fortune to be situated right on a beach that features extensive rocky tide pools at low tide, and good swimming at high tide. It’s like two beaches in one!
Cabuya itself is quiet and feels a bit like stepping back in time, compared to the more tourist-populated towns along the coast. We LOVED it!
The kitchen is extremely well stocked, Geovanny the caretaker is lovely (and willing to teach curious boys how to properly open a coconut). Jenny, the house manager, is warm and friendly, and Fiona, the owner, is responsive and was very flexible with me when our itinerary shifted by a few days.
I would go back in a heartbeat!

Paradise
Definitely off the beaten path, paradise found. This is a rustic beach house and we loved it. Comfy outdoor space with room for yoga. We enjoyed the kayaks almost every day. Lots of great restaurants in the area and we had great massages at Alleodan Massage Therapy. Thanks for renting to us!!!

Slice of Paradise
If you're looking to stay by the beach, this is the perfect rental for you. My husband and i enjoyed our stay so much we ended up extending it a week!
We loved having our own stretch of beachfront, as well as the shady and spacious yard. Despite the fact that it is fairly close to the road, noise was never a problem for us - although the howler monkeys could get pretty loud! We also saw families of Capichin monkeys and Scarlet Macaws. Wildlife abounds - if crabs, bats or other insects bother you, this probably isn't the right place, but we loved it. The house is also two doors down from a family of fishermen, where you can buy the best fresh fish you've ever had at reasonable prices (which was a highlight of our trip). Also within walking distance is Calala Lodge, which is great for drinks and a dip in their lovely pool.
The shower was great - good pressure and ample hot water which was a pleasant surprise.
The kitchen is a tad rustic, but gets the job done.
The bed was quite comfy and the fans helped keep everything cool at night.
The communication was great and Fiona was very flexible with our requests. Overall a great rental!!

The Jungle / Beach experience we were looking for!
Looking to get off the grid, in a far off land?? We did, and had a great time. Of course you have WiFi if you need it, but why?
Our family affectionally calls this our Jungle Treehouse. As the walls and windows are not sealed, nature is at tour finger tips.
The manager is easy to contact and most importantly the owner of our favorite restaurant, Coyote Restaurant. Eating the catch of the day or whatever she had ingredients to prepare while sitting in her beautiful garden completed our Cabuya experience.
Would love to return in the future.

Beautiful outdoors/indoors experience on beach
This is a unique experience! The cabin is beautiful and elegant and completely integrated with the outdoors . . . living space and dining are actually outdoors, and doors and windows throughout the house make it all feel one step up from "glamping." Right on the beach. Near-by village of Cabuya is wonderful, with great restaurants -- authentic and not a tourist-trap. Beach isn't the best for swimming but is gorgeous and pretty much all yours. Great to have access to two open top kayaks. Be aware that openness of the house exposes you to weather and insects. We went in the dry season, and there were hardly any mosquitos. Both Fiona and Jenny, the manager, were considerate and responsive.

Great stay in Cabuya
We enjoyed our stay very much. There is a lot of room to spread out as a family. Our favorite part by far was the sitting area on the lower level. There was so much room for everyone to rest in the shade and relax while in nature. Read Valerie's description because she does a great job of describing the house and surrounding area. And there are kayaks and a couple of bike for use as well. I recommend staying here and would love to stay again in the future.

Relax on the beach
We loved our stay in Cabuya. This rental is located between the more busy town centers montezuma and santa teresa (7km) - close to many amenities and activities but still private and quiet. Some of the previous reviewers complained about the beach, which is wonderful at high tide but unswimmable at low tide. There are many beautiful beaches nearby and it really wasn't an issue for us.
This place is rustic, but everything is in working order. A bat may fly into your bathroom, and a hermit crab may crawl through your kitchen, but we loved every minute of the natural experiences we were surrounded with.
The on site caretaker is very friendly and we enjoyed his company - bring some treats for his very friendly dogs.
We would definitely return. This would be a great place if you have kids or are traveling with a few friends. We traveled as a couple but the house would comfortably fit 6 guests.
Pura Vida!

It was so lovely waking up to the howler monkeys, the sound of the waves and the breeze that filled the house. We felt welcomed and cared for. We will be back.

It was beyond any expectations! We just couldn’t leave the place. This is actually my dream house!
We thought that we would have to go somewhere else to swim because we arrived at low tide but the next morning, the tide was high and the water was perfect to swim. Definitely bring water shoes, rocks can be an issue otherwise. My two girls spent their days bringing up seashells in the treehouse. They were delighted!

The perfect tropical get away!
My husband and I just had our 30th wedding anniversary and wanted to celebrate by going somewhere warm and tropical but away from crowds and the tourist scene. When we discovered Fiona place we thought it would be perfect - we weren't disappointed.
Fiona was very responsive and helpful as we planned our trip, answering questions and offering to help organize outings.
We flew into Libera and rented a car to drive down, it was a 5 and a half hr drive but we went to visit other places after Cabuya and it worked better to have our own car.
The is property is secure, seclude from neighbors, clean and well kept. We loved the design of the home, bringing the inside out and the out side in. Not a luxury place but a comfortable place and that is what we were looking for. The house keeper came every couple of days to tidy up and bring fresh towels.
The beds were comfortable and even though it was in the 80s and 90 when we were there it wasn't uncomfortable sleep. The ceiling fan and table fan and cross breeze kept us cool. The showers were good, lots of pressure and hot water. My husband really enjoyed the outdoor shower. You have to be okay with bugs and critters, it is a very open environment.
Food
There are a couple of small grocery store in Cabuya where you can get some basic foods for cooking, if you stop at a larger town on you way in there are bigger stores with more variety. They all take credit cards. You can buy fresh fish daily down by the boats. We had all we needed to cook with in the home. You can also drink the water here, and it tastes good.
Eating out in Cabuya - the best place we ate in Cabuya and Montezuma was Habitat a small outdoor restaurant in Cabuya they only serve breakfast and lunch but the food is AMAZING. For dinner we ate at Coyotes a couple of times, the food and atmosphere was wonderful.
Activites
We did the hike through Cabo Blanco, nice hike, saw lots of wildlife and enjoyed the beach. Montezuma is just a short drive away and we hiked north along the beach to get away from crowds, beautiful beaches and jungle. We also took surfing lessons and a snorkeling tour both very affordable.
We loved just relaxing and reading at the house in the hammocks and taking the kayaks out.
We've already recommended this place to several friends, Costa Rica is a beautiful country, and Los Carcalos was a great place to stay.

The best part of our vacation!
We all agreed that this "cabin" on the beach was one of the best parts of the vacation. It was so peaceful, and the kitchen/dining room set up was dreamy. I loved the master bedroom, the view. My son's went for a swim in the morning (walked the rocks to surfline) and met up with the neighbor coming in with fresh catch- got a big fish right outta the boat for a great price! We grilled the fish that night over a fire. Loved waking up and strolling the beach in the morning with the dogs for company. Jenny was super helpful when I realized my car battery had died, and she sent her cousin out to give me a jump start.
What a great spot, great house and people. (Not to mention the army of hermit crabs that kept the place clean!) A treasure.

Best kept secret in Costa Rica
This was an amazing home. Fiona is a wonderful off-site host. Geovanny and Jenny were both helpful and very kind. We already miss being at los coracales.
Thank you for allowing us to stay in your wonderful home.
The Calala hotel down the street allowed us to use their pool on the days we ate breakfast there. Their food was amazing!
There is a fisherman 50 m down the road and we ate fresh fish almost every night at Los Coracales
