About this house rental
ALOHA AND WELCOME TO OUR PIECE OF PARADISE!
Hale Luana (House to relax and idle away the hours) is located 3 miles above Kailua Kona and overlooks Kailua Bay and Kailua town. Maka Nui Tui ('Tui' as we like to refer to it) is our 3+ acre property ideally located 1100 feet above sea level containing Hale Luana along with the owners main residence. Tui is private, quiet, convenient, and most relaxing. Surrounded by tropical plants, flowers, and fruit. The fruit is yours for the picking when available. You enter through iron gates and drive up the palm tree lined driveway passing the main house to find Hale Luana.
Hale Luana will be a perfect retreat from relaxing by the infinty pool, the daily sightseeing, beaching, shopping, and numerous other activities available on our wonderful island of Hawaii. Tropical breezes maintain a perfect temperature day and night. No need for air conditioning, but ceiling fans are in all rooms if you feel the need.
Now that you've completed your long trip to the islands, you can relax in your most comfortable, Hawaiian decor Hale Luana. Sip on a glass of wine or tropical drink as you watch the sunset from your private lanai. Marvel at the spectacular view of Kailua Bay and as the sun sets, delight in the stars above and twinkling lights of quaint Kailua town below.
Awake in the morning to the sounds of the local birds and rustling tropical leaves. Enjoy your first cup of Kona coffee on your lanai before embarking on the adventures before you. Whether it be sightseeing, beaching, snorkeling, shopping, golfing, or any of the many activities available. Hale Luana is so very convenient to everything to see or do on the big island. Most are within a 10 to 20 minute drive.
Please note that our pool does not have a shallow end. The shallowest portion is about 4 feet deep. We also have several tall rock walls that are quite attractive to children. For these reasons, children would not be allowed outdoors without adult supervision.
We've tried to prepare Hale Luana for you're pleasure and comfort. We are positive, your vacation here will be one of the most memorable you've experienced. Please contact us by email if you have any questions. We look forward to your visit.

For my son‘s 21st birthday he said he wanted to stay away from the downtown crowds. I found this location, he was ecstatic. The place is immaculate outside, and the accommodations were great. The place is minutes from downtown, and an easy drive. There was fresh fruit and a nice welcome basket left for us. There is plenty of kitchen supplies. There are two security gates protecting the place, which the owners have provided a garage door opener for access; easy! We had a small water issue which we cleared up by calling the owners; that took about 3 minutes to fix. It was very nice talking with these people. Here’s the deal- if you want a quiet place with good accommodations and a great view, choose this place.

We really don't want to leave this ohana! Barb and Ray are kind and lovely people. Beautiful ocean view, fresh fruit, and quiet surroundings! Easy to get to wherever you need or want to go. The ohana is clean and welcoming. Mahalo Barb and Ray for making us feel part of your family❤️❤️ Much aloha, Ron and Sherri🌈

This place was absolutely top notch! First of all, the owners were so welcoming & genuine. We felt at home immediately. We arrived to fresh fruit picked from their yard sitting on the counter. The accommodations were perfect for the 4 of us. The kitchen was well equipped. The beds were comfortable. We spent the majority of our time, while we were home, on the lanai. The sound of the birds was beautiful. The garden was heavenly! The sunsets were perfect from the lanai. We loved the location because it was an easy drive to groceries & our favorite beaches. I can’t say enough about this gem. We will definitely be back!

Barb and Ray were amazing hosts and thank you for sharing your wonderful property. The location was perfect with easy access to Queen K highway, Mamalahola highway and Kona town. We so enjoyed having our morning coffee on the protected lanai and the cool nights for sleeping. I appreciated the well appointed kitchen and the bowl of fruit and other "goodies". Although my husband and I were traveling by ourselves the house is ideally set up for two couples. We have been traveling to Hawaii for several years and loved staying at the higher elevation. It was one of our best stays on the Island of Hawaii. We would definitely come back.

We really enjoyed our stay at Barb and Ray's. They were great hosts, always available to answer our questions like one evening when the house shook!! (A minor earthquake!) and also gave us lots of privacy.
The house is well equipped, has a beautiful view, and is a very convenient location to our favorite beaches and necessary stores. You will love staying here!

We spent a week at Ray and Barb's house in July/August 2022 and had a great time. The house was very clean and in very good condition. It's located on the hills of Kona, about 10 minutes away by car from the city center. The house doesn't have AC, but we found that the temperature was much cooler than in Kona - thanks to the clouds that hover above the rainforest - and we were never too warm. We appreciated the cooler temperature every time we came back home from the beach or the town below. We slept with all windows open. Temperature was pleasant, around 70/75F at night. At night, with open windows, you can sometimes hear a couple of coqui frogs (who sound like a bird more than a frog) and of course birds in the morning. We love the sounds of nature so we actually liked it and slept very well. There are screens on the windows so we didn't have insects inside. The house is in a very quiet gated community so there is zero traffic noise. We took every meal on the lanai, using the small but very efficient gas BBQ. Ray and Barbara were very helpful and gracious hosts, always ready to help when needed. They gave us with mangos from their yard that we loved. If and when we come back to Kona we would absolutely stay here again.

Hawaii Guest house
This guest house is good but I would not say great. The money value is there for sure but there is room for improvement. It is poorly lit on the outside which was dangerous because of the huge amounts of rain. Also, the sofa bed and furniture smell of mildew; pretty badly. I would say the upholstery, rugs need to be cleaned. There was a lot of bugs in house and maybe bed bugs; which is creepy. You are literally on edge of a rain forest and because of this the croaking frog makes a lot of noise, pretty much all night. The other thing which to me takes this out of super host status is that there in no AC. It's humid in Hawaii and the place is upstairs I think AC should be provided. They do have a lot of fans in the house but they take a long time to work and are only so effective. The other thing that I did not like is that the guest house is behind the main house so you are kind of feeling like the front owners can't wait for you to leave. Mind you this won't bother some people but you don't have good privacy and I was never totally comfortable there. The hosts did provide sone fruit and stuff like that which was nice so many people will like that. However, we would not come back here.

Wow!
We were simply looking for a nice place with a kitchen at altitude above Kailua-Kona. What a gorgeous property. Quiet, peaceful, lovely accommodation! Ultra relaxing and the perfect spot for our 42nd wedding anniversary. Thank you for sharing this!

Great visit, excellent hosts!!!!!
This is our second stay at this property. The location is private and very scenic. The unit itself is detached from the main house and has its own private lanai with excellent ocean views. Having returned home now, we miss the sounds of nature that surround the location. We will be returning again soon, Barb and Ray are super nice people and am glad we found this listing. This is a great find and will not disappoint!!

Piece of Heaven
The Holualoa property was, without a doubt, the cleanest / beat appointed / welcoming VRBO property that we ever had the privilege of staying at. The hosts go out of their way to make you comfortable and that started with their greetings, welcome basket and making sure that we had fresh fruit from their garden everyday. It is beautifully located overlooking Kailua / Kona and because of that you will experience the most amazing sunsets. Mahalo Nui for welcoming us into your beautiful home Aloha.

Beautiful perch above Kona
Do you know how you can love a place so much, you don't want anyone to know about it? Barb and Ray's Kona retreat is such a place. very beautiful, quiet, private and welcoming. Such a nice escape from the heavy traffic and throngs of people down on the shoreline. Barb and Ray are excellent hosts, providing all you'll need for your stay and giving helpful suggestions for outings and eateries.
Basics: beds are very comfy with nice linens and a choice of pillows. The apartment is very clean, with spacious bathrooms. Kitchen is good size with nice equipment. Living/dining is cozy though we ate most meals on the lovely lanai. Living up on the hill means you have incredible views plus cooler nights, thanks to the breezes and cooling fans throughout the house. Top all that off with fresh fruit from the garden and the wonderful sound of birds in the mornings. Perfection. But remember not to tell anyone about it so we can go there often, ok?

Beautiful 2 bedroom, 2 bath apartment. It was fully equipped kitchen and apartment. Huge lanai(8x20) and overal apaatment about 1200ft2. functional furniture that had the tropical motif. Nice large TV, granite counter tops, coffee maker, had everything we needed. Plus they provided with local food for us. We really liked the place.

Nice location, however not supported well
Excellent views and quiet most of the time. Unfortunately, we had to obtain our own toilet paper, paper towels, and laundry detergent. The barbeque grill was out of propane. The pool and hot tub were not being maintained.

Beautiful and Relaxing
This guest house over the garage of a larger house was great. The view from the porch was spectacular. We had everything we needed for a great week. You’re close enough to town to get takeout without it getting cold but far enough up the mountain you don’t hear anything but nature.

Beautiful Property
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Hale Luana. From the tropical grounds to the amazing views, this place is a winner. It was comfortable and clean and the location is perfect - close enough to Kona to be convenient and far enough to be tranquil after a long day of activity. It's also close to the artsy town of Holualoa. We enjoyed the giant avocado and fruit left for us. Barb and Ray are great hosts and very responsive to our requests. We will definitely stay there again the next time we visit the island.

This was an excellent find, a jewel in paradise found!
My wife and I were so pleased with this VRBO find! We are always cautious on booking a property for the first time, the reviews for this rental drew us in. They were spot on with all of the amenities and the description of the property. The owners, Barb and Ray, are amazing and so very friendly. We felt so very fortunate that they shared their amazing home with us. If you look at the ad you might have pause for renting a bungalow on a property where the owners also reside. It was really like living on the Robin Masters estate like Thomas Magnum. The rental unit is in a separate building and has it's own private lanai with ocean views. This rental is very spacious, perfect for two couples, or a small family. It is close to town, local beaches, but also at a very comfortable elevation for nice cool weather. The local fruit grown on the property was fantastic! It was truly a magical two weeks spent in paradise, we highly recommend this rental!

Great place, beautiful environment
My second visit in 3 montht was as good as my first. My wife was with me this time and she appreciated the space as much as did I. Very helpful hosts, especially in the Corona Virus time. I would be happy to return anytime our condo +which we just got) is occupied! Great place 👍!

Absolutely fantastic! Barb and Ray were so nice and informative and welcoming. By far our best VRBO experience of all. We all agreed that we'll be back when going to the big island again!

Great views and a great location.
The property was exactly as described. The location couldn't be any better. Walking distance to lots of restaurants and a swimming beach but a bit away from the super busy resorts. We really appreciated having everything we needed for our weeks stay such as a cooler, beach chairs and towels. We plan to book again next time we visit.

Lovely property, very quiet & exactly as advertised.
My son and I had a lovely time staying here on a weeklong scuba diving trip. Other than all the wonderful chirping and singing wildlife...very peaceful. The temps were 5-10 cooler than on the coast, which is exactly what we were looking for. Barb and Ray were very welcoming and made us feel right at home.

A slice of paradise!!
Thank you Barb and Ray for a wonderful time at your beautiful guest home. While it definitely looks great in the pictures , they do not do it justice. In person it is simply amazing. We stayed at Hale Luana for close to a month and loved every minute of it. It was part family vacation when our kids joined us and part anniversary getaway when it was just my wife and I. This home was perfect for both. The hosts were so gracious and made us feel like family. They let us enjoy our privacy but were always available if we had a question or wanted tips or recommendations for dining or the best beaches. The fresh fruit was a huge bonus. We can't wait till our next chance to visit. Mahalo, Eric & Deanna

Spectacular place, beautiful views, incredible flowers and gardens
Great place, beautiful views of all Kailua Kona from 1100 feet up. On a clear day you can see forever. And yes, its cooler by a good 5 to 10 degrees than down seaside. But the view, the cool breezes and the exquisite surroundings make this a perfectly beautiful place. Great setup, exceptionally well put together, and supplied with everything you need. You will want for nothing here. The hosts are gracious, kind and adept at making this a dream relaxed environment. The pool is also quite spectacular and gives you a view of all the town below. It looked good when I chose it and was even better in real life. Thanks to the hosts for making a great space even better.

Beautiful Up-mountain housing with great views and abundant fruit!
Just a wonderful apartment with great accommodations and beautiful grounds. We really enjoyed the day, evening, and night views from the porch, and although we spent most days at various beaches felt the drive was well worth it, for the beauty of the spot and the cooler temperatures at night. The kitchen is well equipped as we made numerous dinners and almost all breakfasts at the apartment. Very happy to find coffee, bread, jam and chocolate waiting for us when we arrived. The Gardner was very nice and picked and delivered fresh fruit from the grounds the days he worked. These included bananas, limes, lemons, oranges and a tomato or two. We also collected a coconut and a papaya from the road just outside the gates. Our daily adventures took us eventually around the island from north shore to Hilo to Volcano National Park to south shore, we enjoyed them all and felt like the property was centrally located and coming home each night was comfortable and easy. We also rented MTB and road bikes from Bike Works in Kona and rode a fantastic forested trail up Koloko road and out route 11 along part of the Ironman course. The turtle beach accessible from the port harbor was a favorite spot as our son did his first snorkeling there. We loved two step for better snorkeling as well as Hookena beach for a secluded afternoon beach experience. We day tripped to “Laupahoehoe” beach on a stormy day and saw some great waves crashing the rocky shoreline and ate at tradition Hawaiian s
Street food vendors in Hilo. the house came will more than ample beach towels and a variety of snorkel masks and fins. We have used VRBO over the last decade for annual vacations across the country and this ranks with the best of them,. We’ll be back.
