About this cottage rental
This home was created by my parents, she a keen gardener from England, he an educator and businessman who was raised in the community. They retired here and created a unique environment amid the rugged setting of an authentic fishing village. The home is surrounded by hand-planted trees and gardens, and it offers fabulous views of Old Bonaventure harbour and beautiful Trinity Bay. At the rear of the house a small waterfall flows into a stream which runs right under the house and through the front lawn, providing a most relaxing soundscape for restful nights of sleep and memorable afternoon naps. The two double bedrooms, each with an en-suite bathroom, accommodate four adults. There is a large, well-equipped kitchen with double ovens, a five-ring stove top and a dishwasher, along with every imaginable utensil. There is a breakfast area positioned
beneath a skylight, and a more formal dining table overlooking the harbour. The comfortable lounge area is especially cosy with plenty of seating. It also features an inviting
Vermont Castings wood-burning stove with a supply of firewood. Wi-fi internet access
reaches all parts of the house and property. For entertainment, there is a flatscreen TV with Bell satellite service. DVD and CD players are also provided, along with a Bluetooth speaker for iPhones, etc. A landline phone is provided, with Canada/US wide unlimited long distance calling. This helps offset the fact that, like most rural Newfoundland communities, Old Bonaventure is not serviced by any cell phone service provider.
The secluded garden features a pond and a wide variety of plants that provide spectacular colour throughout the spring/summer/fall seasons. The harbourfacing side of the house has a deck (with a gas BBQ). On warm days, this is a perfect spot to enjoy sunsets, watch fishing boats come and go, and to see magnificent eagles soar overhead from their nearby nests. There is a glassroofed conservatory which is perfect for enjoying those cooler days and for stargazing at night. For the musically inclined, there is also a superb piano. For readers, there is a huge selection of books that cover every interest. Finally, there is an ample collection of board games and playing cards. This inviting home is the ideal retreat for a restful and restorative holiday. And when you are rested, numerous nearby attractions await to connect you with the beauty and fascinating history of this special part of Newfoundland. For instance, the film site of the acclaimed “Random Passage” series is just a five minute drive. (Just one of four films shot in this area in recent years.) Hiking trails take you to the resettled outports of Kerley’s Harbour and British Harbour. The Skerwink Trail, an essential experience for hikers with spectacular views, is just 30 minutes away. Boat excursions for whalewatching and for glimpsing historic and enigmatic resettled outports depart daily from New Bonaventure and Trinity. If that is not enough history to satisfy, the
500 year old town of Trinity is only 25 minutes away.
Newfoundland is famous for it's music and storytelling and there are many local concerts and festivals. Please contact us if you would like information on any events that may be happening during your visit.
The options are endless...and the comments of previous visitors speak for themselves! This is a holiday experience that you will want to share with others.

We loved sitting back and relaxing while watching fishing boats in the harbour. The kitchen was well stocked and very convenient. We had lots of room. We had the village mascot Chisholm visit us everyday looking for some social time. He even came to say goodbye the day we left. We spent a few days touring the area such as Trinity and Bonavista. We enjoyed our stay.

The pictures don't do the house justice. The town is the fishing village we had hoped for. Everything was great from the water pressure to the very comfortable beds. There are so many windows it only takes a few minutes to cool the place in the evening. Every window has a view, garden or ocean. There are so many interesting things to look at in the house decor with a huge selection of books to flip through. Dawn gave us a tour of the house then arranged for us to get lobster from a local who then took us out in the bay on their boat and we toured the area and a cave you wouldn't know was there. it was one of the highlights of our trip. It was our favourite rental in our trip. Loved everything about it. If you leave quietly in the morning you often find a bunny in the front yard.
other reviews comment on the road being bumpy whcih it is for about 5 mins. not difficult to navigate.
We also recommend taking a tour with Sea of Whales. it was outstanding.

We really needed a rest and, as always, Old Bonaventure House was the perfect retreat.
Even on a cloudy day it feels as though the house is full of sunshine.
Thank you once again, Dawne.

Very big place, maybe 2000 square feet, very comfortable, everything we needed.
So many interesting treasures to look at, many books. Lovely harbor. Old house but both bathrooms have been modernized. Comfortable beds.
Loved the wood burner!
Beautiful piano, like new! Solarium.
Last few kilometers to get there were quite poor, lots of potholes. Drive carefully.
Close to Random Passage.
Host was very nice and helpful.

A lovely cottage in a small outport.
Terrible road conditions for the last 2-3 km.

This rustic house is located in a tiny outport with a beautiful view of the small fishing port of Old Bonaventure. Close proximity to hiking at the Random Passage Site and to the historic town of Trinity where there is an amazing communityTheatre that keeps the history of the area alive.
Also about 35 minute drive to the beautiful Skerwink and Fox Island Trails. Road in has incredible vistas but is not for the faint of heart although we did get used to it. Loved the whole area.

Home was lovely. We shared with another couple and we happy with the separate bathrooms and comfortable beds. Host met us personally and showed us around. She left us local treats and soaps. Great experience.

My daughter and I were fortunate to stay at Old Bonaventure House. We loved everything about it, from the beds and bedding to the rushing stream outside the house and the nearby iceberg. The large, beautifully designed and clean house offered us a relaxing, tranquil space to read, cook and rest. The well-equipped, spacious kitchen had everything we needed and more. We really enjoyed and appreciated the local tea, coffee and chocolates that Dawne provided. The bathrooms were impressive and we found the soaking tub to be a real treat after a day of hiking on the exceptional nearby trails. This house overlooks not only the quaint, quiet village and the ocean, but also beautiful gardens that were nestled amidst the rocky landscape. The giant rhododendrons, azaleas, poppies, lupines and even some tulips were all in bloom and were a feast for the eyes. Dawne is a wonderful host and we hope to be able to return in the future.

Located a short scenic drive from Trinity, we found likely our favorite accommodation for this trip. Babbling brook at the side; lobster boats in the bay; quiet and serene; property owner meeting us and providing fresh flowers.
Every appliance, utensil, toiletry readily available. Immaculate interior, with space to wander.
We'd book again in a heartbeat!

Dawne was an amazing host. She was there to meet us when we arrived and showed us around and acquainted us with how everything worked. We loved the delicious coffee and local chocolates that she left for us and offered us access to a phone as there was no cell signal. Old Bonaventure was filled with interesting artifacts and was a central location to explore the Bonavista area. There was every kitchen utensil that you could possibly need as well as an excellent stove and oven and a barbecue. The beds were comfortable and it was so quiet. Stop in Clarenville to get groceries and supplies as the area near has more General stores. We loved our time here and so did our dog as it had a completely fenced in yard for him to roam in. If you are travelling with children there are lots of games and a TV for rainy days and evenings and an extensive library for children and adults. We will never forget our time here and hope someday we will be able to return.

Very very rustic. Like an old granny house with furniture and appliances from what looks like 50 years ago. Coffee grinder had previous coffee in it so not clean. Could not fry eggs as all fry pans are scratched with Teflon loose. Fridge had no light Tv so small and could not get any television. They had dvd but the movies were so old we just did not bother. Cobwebs everywhere and carpets look grungy. Surfaces were grungy. Second bedroom had blind in door to outside with broken blind so had to hang a towel. And bathroom had a bath with a hand held to shower. No curtains around bath so not usable. Had to share master shower with friends. Window screens poor fitting so flies got in. House so far from everything. Took an hour to Cape bonavista. On terrible pot hole roads for about 17 plus KM. Would never recommend or stay there again. View from front was nice of water and boats. But Saturday morning was woken. So early after a long drive to get there by a yappy dog barking for almost an hour. We could not wait to get out.

Our favourite spot on the trip. So beautiful. Wish we had stayed longer. The view was amazing of the fishing village and cove. Lovely gardens with resident rabbit and crow. The house was fantastic and so unique.

We just loved this cottage! It suited us perfectly as we began our 3 weeks exploring Newfoundland. So relaxing to look out onto the bay and watch the crabbers working. So quiet and peaceful. There was even a bunny in the yard everyday! Dawne was a lovely host and began our atay with a tour.

We all loved our stay, everything was perfect from gourmet kitchen, comfortable beds, and superior bedding, so much for extras, soaps, lovely bathrooms, the view being soothing, outer gardens beautiful. Enjoyed our fresh lobster that a fisherman sold us on our walk to the dock. A lovely VRBO that one would love to return to. Thank you Dawne for the stay.

We had a wonderful stay at this beautiful house in old Bonaventure. It was very well stocked with everything we needed, and we loved the little touches like handmade local soaps, And daffodils and chocolates waiting on the table for us. The beds were very comfortable, The shower and bath were both fantastic, and it was so lovely to hear the little brook running across the property. We enjoyed sitting by the woodstove in the evening, doing yoga in the sunroom with the sunrise over the harbour, and eating our meals looking out over the water. The only downside was the hard shape that the road was in, Which is pretty common for smaller communities. Overall an absolutely gorgeous day and we would definitely recommend to others!

Beautiful old home nestled in the trees, close to the ocean, wood burning fireplace and a stream running underneath. What more do you need? Very clean home. Owner met us and showed us around. Very quiet area (can’t be any more than 50 residents). Love the solitude. Visited Trinity, Bonavista and surrounding areas. Will be back.

Beautiful location with a georgus view of the ocean. The house was warm and inviting. We enjoyed nearby New Bonaventure and the Random Passage site. Looking forward to staying here again. Beds were very comfortable, kitchen had everything we needed, and we enjoyed our morning coffee sitting around the wood stove. Would highly recommend this vacation rental.

The view of the rural fishing harbour, the mountains & the ocean was stunning. The cottage was so beautifully decorated, the 2 bed rooms with attached washrooms was a treat. This cottage reminds me of a English cottage & the garden too of an English country garden. The cottage is very spacious but very cozy. When we came into the house Dawne was waiting for us & fire place all a glow, so warm & welcoming. All the kitchen gadgets I can think of was there. There was 2 ovens, 2 separate sinks, a dishwasher in the kitchen, the washer & dryer too. The bubbling brook that flows under the bedrooms is a delight. The fenced in garden was a bonus for our dog Nyla. Dawne the host is a very sweet, kind, friendly & generous host. Dawne was very informative about things to do in the area & promotes local establishment’s. The welcome gift of Aunt Sarah’s chocolates, the Trinity soap & shampoo bars & Trnity coffee beans all there for us to use, made us go to Trinity Bay to buy more of it. Dawn is definitely a super host. I had the opportunity of buying fresh Cod fish off the boat & meeting the neighbours to this cottage. I’ve never met such nice friendly & generous folk in my life. Hands down “Old Bonaventure House” was the highlight of our trip. If time permits I will definitely go back & stay for a month their just to experience the peace & tranquility all over again. Thank you so very much Dawne for being such a welcoming host & making our stay in Newfoundland a memorable one. I’m back in Brampton, Ontario since last night, still having vivid pictures of the views from you charming cottage ♥️

It was a great return visit to one of our favourite getaway spots. The cottage feels so welcoming and we totally enjoyed a relaxing stay. The fenced in backyard makes bringing our dog with us on vacation a pleasure. This is also such a great location from which to day trip around Bonavista Bay.
Thank you again, Dawne, for everything!

The house is spacious and so comfortable. It has all that you need and was so interesting inside with all of the books and the large, well equipped kitchen. Washer and dryer too! The views from all of the windows were beautiful and the flower gardens out back were so pretty! Two couples could easily stay here with the large bedrooms and two bathrooms. We hated to leave!

We LOVED this charming, quaint cottage on the ocean. It could very comfortably handle 4+ people but we had it to ourselves. Both bathrooms were spacious and one with a lovely soaking tub. There are beautiful perennial gardens around the property. The kitchen is extremely well equipped. The place is rich in literature of all kinds..classics, cooking, novels, travel...100s of books to enjoy. The drive to Trinity we made many times and to Port Rexton Brewery and grocery store. Our meal at the Dock Marina in Trinity was best in Nfld. We went on Eco tour as well..great outing. We highly recommend this cottage on your travels. There is internet but no cell service at the cottage. We adjusted! It's a wonderful place to stay and relax

The house and location were beautiful beyond expectations. The vrbo site would not let me into their email access the day we arrived...very frustrating. But I was able to contact the owner by phone so it all worked out.
